Trying to sim seasons but roster violations constantly interrupting?

I created an MLB-based league (fictional players) and have been trying to sim a bunch of seasons before taking over as GM for a team. (So currently just playing in commish mode).

But I'm running into serious problems with AI roster management. Simming is constantly getting interrupted by roster violations, and for some reason the AI won't handle them on its own. It's driving me batty.

I set up my leagues the following way: MLB down to A Ball with roster limit set to 25. Low-A roster capped at 30. Rookie capped at 42. In the past this has worked reasonably well.

But now, the AI seems to be running into serious problems. Rather than just release a player somewhere in the organization, the game is constantly interrupting the sim to make me do it. I don't understand why. In the Manager Options, I have the AI set to control everything.

Any suggestions welcome!

1) I would raise AAA to 30 or 35 limit. AAA has the most churn.
2) Enable ghost players.

I guess I just don't understand why the AI won't just release a player or two when their roster is over the limit? I feel like it always has in the past. Why is the sim getting interrupted and asking *me* to take care of the roster, when I'm not GMing any team and have AI to handle all roster functions?

It's making it impossible to sim. I get interrupted every other day by indications that some minor league team somewhere has an illegal roster.. (!!!)

Question

Under team control settings, do you have control of minor league teams as far as promotions and demotions or does your assistant GM?

That might make a difference?

This has always annoyed the blazes out of me. There is absolutely no reason whatsoever for it. The illegal number of players message should be a troubleshooting mode warning to the programmers, not a message to the player.

I have "Computer AI" set to control every function in the Manager Options screen. I even checked the "Do Not Disturb" box, which literally indicates that "The AI will handle your team and you will not be interrupted during auto-play."

Something is wrong here. I'm being constantly interrupted to fix roster problems on teams I'm not even managing (since I'm not managing *any* team, just playing in commish observer mode as I sim through seasons.)

Is this a longstanding issue with OOTP? I don't remember having this problem in previous versions...?

Roster problems in the Majors, Minors or both?
Try setting rosters to unlimited at the lowest level.
I agree that it should not happen. Giving the AI a little more room to move may fix it.

It really is SO annoying. I end up deleting entire leagues because of this issue.

This is the first version where I've run into this issue. I was GM of one team, but could not continue simming my season because another team had too many players on one of its minor league teams. I had to make myself commissioner and release players on the other team, which I've never had to do before.

Yeah, this is what strikes me too -- I don't remember running into this problem (or maybe just not to the same extent) in previous versions of OOTP. Granted I am a relative newb, since 14 was my first foray into OOTP, but I just do not recall previously having to halt my sims every couple of days to take care of other teams' roster difficulties. It's pretty excruciating if you're trying to sim a bunch of seasons in a relatively quick manner.

I'm always hesitant to make Rookie level unlimited rosters, just because it winds up being such a mess. A roster limit of 42 for R Ball should be plenty -- also combined with a 30 roster limit at Short season A ball. That should leave teams plenty of headroom to make roster moves.

And if the teams are constantly over the limit -- why doesn't the AI just release a player or two.. ??

I have Rookie set to unlimited and I still run into this problem. Sometimes, the team stopping would be a team with only six players and other times it would be a AAA team with 27 (player limit for AAA is set to 26). So setting Rookie level to unlimited won't fix it.


I also noticed that if a team is over the limit and I manually release a 35 year old in AA they will just replace him with someone else the next day. Luckily though, it's only been a couple teams and I can usually get by it pretty quick. It does suck though if you are trying to sim years at a time without having user input.

One additional thing I have on is age limits in my lower minors so not sure if you also have those and this may be contributing?

I was wondering if age caps might be contributing to the problem somehow. I do have a few age caps set: Rookie capped at 22 yr. olds, Low A at 24, High A at 26, AA at 30, and no age cap for AAA (and of course MLB).

I mostly do this because I hate finding 27 yr olds in my Rookie league. I think the caps I use are pretty generous (how many 26 year olds are in A Ball in real life?) -- and mostly just use them to spur the AI to keep moving players up the MiLB ladder as they get older.

I have never had this happen with either 16 or 17. As a result, I think you guys have a setting off somewhere.

Age caps or roster limits or not allowing ghost players in the minors are all really bad ideas. Also foreigner limits.

I definitely get why it's a bad idea to place too many constraints on the AI -- i.e. why you don't want to make roster management any more complicated than it already is for the AI. I suspect that giving leagues age caps and player limits is pushing the envelope a bit -- but like I say, I've done these things before (pre ootp17) without running into these problems. I've never used ghost players and never played with unlimited rosters.

Basic question boils down to this: if a team has too many players on its roster, why doesn't the AI just release players to comply with the limit? Why does the game require *me* to do this for it?

I don't agree with this. If an option has been implemented, then it should not be a considered a bad idea. I do not like to see aging players in rookie and short season leagues so therefore I try to limit this. As for using ghost players, that is not to my taste either.


If these features that you deem a bad idea are causing problems then maybe bringing them up will get them adjusted so they no longer cause problems.

I have NEVER touch other leagues roster limits or settings, and I got this error message so many times in 16. Crossing my fingers it won't hit me in 17, cause it really kills me when I leave the game to sim for a few hours, come back and see the sim was inturrpted by this.

And yet I played over two thousand hours of 16 and NEVER ONCE had this problem. Funny, isn't it?
