1. this an amazing thread, I am astounded that somebody took the time to write that out. I am even more amazed that I read it...

2 the larger the universe the larger the noticed performance increase. especially if you are saving logs/boxes/creating pics/almanacs. ect.

3.the wear balancing on modern ssd's have all but eliminated the early death of these drives.

4. I am not sure we really helped answer the basic question. does ssd or hdd matter.

and the answer is.

it depends on you specific needs and tolerances for wear vs performance & your expected replacement/upgrade pattern

let me put it this way. I don't buy a car and then take the bus everywhere because I am afraid of wearing out the tires. I am also not going to drive less because I bought a really good set of tires. I accept the maintenance costs as part of owning the car.

for me, since I am cheap, I bought a relatively small ssd (240gb), run the os, ootp, office & productivity stuff on the ssd & store everything else, documents, music, videos & other programs that don't require the performance on the 2tb hdd.

as prices come down over the next 2-3 years, I am far more likely to upgrade the ssd before I wear it out

I've been in IT for over 30 years and I don't know what to believe about that 'rumor'. However, my Intel SSD toolbox has a percentage of life left indicator (if that means anything). Anyway, it's not the sole reason I don't install games on my OS drives.

I have no complaints with the speed of OOTP running from a HDD and I have every league loaded and use 'very high detail' in every league. Then there is box scores and logs, etc... I don't skimp on anything. However, I don't have anything to compare the speed with, but I am running it on a 5960x at 4.5G with 64G of memory. I haven't messed around with the number of helper threads to use for OOTP, I might up it 32 to see what happens.

I'd say, depending on system specs and game settings, you might notice a huge difference or very little at all. You should do what's best for your system.
yeah, this is a long-term sim test league to hone LTM. very low frills except what hte game uses to model baseball related activities and i intend to use.

i do keep a lot of extras once i get going, just not news stories. i'll lower detail in minor leagues, though, since i never look at the stuff.

you don't buy a corvette and drive it down a pot-hole laden road or some podunk area's dirt roads, either.

i put 1.2TB on it in 5-7days. as of 2014 ssd's, that would not be good long-term. patch 2 fixed this major problem. before patch 2 was the only time i recommended not to use one... and for good reason. 1TB of data is greater than 200 hd movies (x264/5), say ~50 some seasons of hdtv, and ~150 lossless almums (~740gb).... 1.2 TB in 5-7 days, let it sink in a bit. you would write over your 2TB drive in less than 2 weeks. that's some serious data for a fun, yet tiny and simple game.

since then, i have not cheerleaded for or against the use of an SSD. i don't care what someone puts on their SSD. however, whether or not it takes advantage of it's enhanced speed and to what extent is useful information for some people. i explained why it's not much of an increase in performance. i knew this from experience.

i then provided real world data. it was mainly for one person, since he was so incredulous about it. he displays borderline obsessive behaviour toward me. he's defintely on at least one DSM-V spectrum replying to him is just plain old fun for me, although not much of a challenge.

I wasn't being critical, I am not that subtle, just genuinely amazed. tis neither positive or negative, just amazed.

and to continue the car analogy a bit, I might not drive a vette down a pot-holed filled road at breakneck speed, but I would have no problem taking it to the track & driving the wheels off of it. nor I am afraid to take my 4wd off-road, that's why I bought it. if if long-term reliability, utility and economy were my main concerns I would have bought a Japanese hatchback

really, my only point is, that the answer to ssd vs. hdd is very personal.

i am applying the same potential concerns to an SSD.. it really doesn't matter if it's a vette or a yugo. this analogy is getting a bit offbase, lol.

everythign is relative, and i made an honest effort to explain it in such a way.. never giving a specific opinion but rather giving relevant information.

i don't know the person's income level, expectations or when they intend to replace a component or entire computer... i don't want to know or ask these things either. they can take the info and apply their version of common sense after that point.

i know you don't need this explanation... i have time to kill.
