Stat Calculation/Conversion Question

I'm hoping to get some feedback:

I'm trying to understand the best way to handle the league stat modifiers in converting from one game to another, as well as just one season to the next. In the case of SSG Baseball, it's both. Here is some info:

Here are how things look in OOTP 16 yesterday before I exported things into OOTP 17:

Here is how things look upon converting the same league into OOTP 17 (it's the same as 16):

Here is what a new league in OOTP 17 looks like:

I'm not sure which I should be using, or whether I should be just using that "auto-calc" or "restore" options. I'm not sure what it's referring to in its calculation; is it the 2016 season we ran using OOTP16, or the real life 2015 season, or?

Thanks for clarifying! Hoping to get this all adjusted properly before we start on Opening Day for our second season.

Bump. Does anyone have some insight into this? I'm just not sure if/when I should adjust from season to season.

Thanks!

I would love to know this myself. These modifiers are a thing of confusion for me. In the past I have tried to play with them and unknowingly adjusted something I thought was correct that had a really adverse affect on my league

I have seen several different posts discussing these and when/how to do them but there is great variance of opinion it appears

I just want to keep my league stats at all levels close to the same year after year. The difference in ratings for players in these leagues vary so much that I am not sure how or when to adjust these

It seems the year to year would make logical sense but have done this and seen large variances year to year as well

Historical stat modifiers are based on what actually happened, they serve to help the league produce statistics similar to a specific year. Once you get to the 2016 season that is all thrown out the window because that season hasn't actually been played yet, so the game has no historical data to draw from. Bottom line is it really doesn't matter, everyone will be playing in the same environment. At this point it's about whatever you prefer and/or are comfortable with

Aslo note: at this point if you want some random variances in Offense/Pitching going forward

Turn on League evolution in those areas

These have all been helpful. Thank you.

The question I still have is WHY are the numbers different? Are the reflective, or projective? And then do I need to hit that "auto-calc modifiers" button ever?

If I recall correctly Auto-Calc is nothing more than a manual version of the League evolution I pointed out earlier. It will randomize your modifiers to produce slightly different results. Restoring defaults resets all modifiers to 1.000

The numbers are different likely because of any of these reasons
A) the leagues were created with different versions of the game
B) You are at 2016 and the game has no historical data to work with
C) The game from OOTP16 started with a different base than the game created with 17

As I understand:

* the "Auto-adjust modifers for accuracy" checkbox is for historical leagues. If you turn it on, the league stats output will evolve like in real life. If you leave it off, the league will remain the way you initially set it up forever.

* the red "Auto-calc Modifers" button is something you need to press only if you change any of the totals in the columns left of the button, and want the game to use your changes.

When you get to (or past) 2016, the game should be using 2015 values forever, unless league evolution ends up influencing them. If you convert an OOTP16 league, well a league in OOTP16 had no way to guess what the right 2015 modifiers would be, because 2015 hadn't happened yet. So that league, if it reached 2015 (or beyond) will probably have the 2014 modifiers. OOTP17 will have the correct 2015 modifiers. That's possibly one reason for the differences you're seeing.

I did a little checking, and the league you created with OOTP17 numbers are the MLB 2015 Numbers. The game that was created with OOTP16 didn't have the 2015 Season Stats because the season hadn't been played yet when it was made

are you referring to the check box on the League Totals screen?

So, if I'm playing into the future (2020), do I want to leave this unchecked to get annual fluctuations in statistical output based on talent in the league (basically a less drastic version of the league evolution check boxes)? And if my goal is to make sure the numbers are similar year in and year out, I would keep the "Automatically adjust league total modifiers for accuracy" checked?

I'm referring to the checkbox in the first screenshot, which says something very similar to "Automatically adjust league totals for accuracy".

I'm no expert in this stuff, and I hope someone will correct me if I'm mistaken, but when it says "adjust for accuracy", my understanding is that it means "adjust for historical accuracy". You can either set up your league in 1930 and have it remain constant forever, or you can set up your league in 1930 and have it evolve the same way real baseball did. But once you get past 2015, the game has no statistical totals it can use to be "accurate". So the setting makes no difference once you pass 2015.

The game doesn't produce random fluctuations in the league totals, no matter what you do with that checkbox. You will of course see some changes in your league stats output based on the balance of talent in your league (a few strong drafts for pitching will make your overall pitching stats better). Then there's league evolution, and I've never understood properly how that works (I actually suspect it doesn't work, at least in OOTP16). That might work, if it's enabled, by changing league totals, not sure.

I always (as in, ever since I've been playing OOTP) "assumed" that meant the engine would tweak the league totals modifiers at the end of the year if the league talent distro caused an uptick in HR or SBs so that over a number of years, the avg should stay pretty static.
To your point, on the league options screen shot that Painmantle attached later in the thread, there is another checkbox that reads "Automatically adjust league totals modifiers after each season for accuracy", with the comment below it on the next line reading intended for fictional historical leagues. I think THAT checkbox is what you described?

Yes, that's the checkbox I've been talking about all along. I'm not sure what you thought I was referring to?

First screenshot that Lowe attached...right under the League Totals and modifiers, there's a check box that reads "Automatically adjust league totals modifiers for accuracy"

if you put your totals back in and the modifiers from '16, it should be similar.

but, it could be different, depending on many things. i'd try that first with a restored backup for testing purposes. if the bulk of the game engine works the same, you should be close with your original values and modifiers from '16.

if that doesn't work...

Auto-Calc will assesss your league's talent, relative to the League Totals, and it will assign values so that you hit those totals, or close to.

if you hit autocalc 10times and average it, you will most likely hit your totals within a very small margin of error. i don't like waht autocalc does with errors and the stuff below BABIP on the settings screen.

if you have above average talent in your league when you hit auto-calc, you will have lower Modifiers. vice versa for below aveage.

it's a bit more complicated than that since you have batting v pitching etc.

-----------------------------

if you have a perfectly average league in all ways (player turnover type stuff, nothing you can really control), then auto-calc will give you perfect LTMs. otherwise, you are setting your league average above or below where you actualyl want it, based on League Totals values.
