Over 6gigabytes of host writes per sim year
is there something wrong here? i'm seeing 6-7gb or more written per 1 year of simulation. this game is an SSD killer, currently.
this is a small league compared to what is possible with the game. 28 teams / 6 minor leagues, nothing else as far as independent or international leagues. in its current testing form voting, pictures, bb cards are all turned off. no box scores or other similar feedback is kept. lowest level of statistical detail is set. barebones except for morale/personality/coaches etc things that have a tangible effect are left on. (crystal disk app for the info, nothing else running but OS. previous 1.5 years of use =1.5tb host writes. after 1 week of ootp it was at 2.3tb of host writes. 1/3rd of my SSD's use occured in the last week while using OotP vs 1.5years for 2/3rds of use.) if i repeated the last week with my SSD and ootp17, it would die in about 1.5 years (based on 72tb rating). i've since moved it to the mechanical, which until the slowdown gets fixed is not a viable answer, lol. (30mins =1 year). that is a bit of exagerration. my use this week is slightly more than a typical week would be. it's still writing ~7gb of data per season, regardless. For a new league created with OOTP 17 this is not an issue as we store the text in a SQL database now. It does not write to disk nearly as often as OOTP 16 did.
Also, this rating doesn't make much sense in reality. My old SSD died after 5 years of development on OOTP including daily over-night sims... |

i'll try moving the pagefile/temp directories to the mechanical, but i don't think the pagefile is used much when 90% of RAM is available. i can only go by the specs... it says 72tb life. if i continue to do 1tb a week due to this game, it will die in 1.5years. i'm sure that really means 2-3 years of that type of use, but even so that is ridiculous for a home pc ssd to die that fast. mine is/was a cheap one from july '14. it may be a moot point if saturday patch makes using the hdd a valid option. i'm one of the few with slower than expected sim times (10min vs 30, ssd v hdd) Last edited by NoOne; 03-25-2016 at 04:05 PM. |

update:
i turned off page file. moved all system temp folders off SSD. it is still writing over 6gb to disk per season. no difference in speed with these new settings. isn't this excessive and/or inefficient somewhere? note: i have news set to "keep none," yet it takes a while while "Saving news..." when it autosaves on jan 1. am i mistaken that i cannot turn off news stories? i don't even read that junk and it's not set to save any of it. just a ton of wasted resources for anyone who doesn't put much weight into automated stock messages, lol. absolutely nothing is being kept that i can turn off. news, logs, box scores etc etc. (supposedly) |

okay, after the saturday, mar 26th patch it is no longer writing 6gb per simulated season.
does it have to save 100% of data as opposed to just what has changed on auto-saves / saving and exiting? e.g. at the end of the year it saves 2-3gb or thereabouts. then, i click to exit after the sim and auto-save ends and it writes another 2-3gb as it exit/saves even though nothing has changed or could have changed. lots of excess writes for no reason and often. not just this example. if the backup can figure out what is new vs old and only save what has changed, i would think the save/auto-save feature can do the same thing.
