New game, current season, I'm in charge of the Mets. Owner lists resigning Neil Walker a priority. A few weeks into the season and he is one of the few bright spots in my lineup. I decide that I'm also interested in him staying with us.
Walker is 30 years old, playing well but obviously not a hall of fame caliber player. His contract demand? 7 years at 28 m8llion per season with a player option after 5 seasons. Hell no. I ultimately tried a final offer of 5 years at 21.5 per season with player option after year 3. He terminated all contract talk. I traded him for prospects and the owner is mad as hell. If I don't make the postseason I bet I'm going to be fired. What would you have done? |

I would have waited until he was slumping to make the second offer. You have all season to meet the goal. The player's demands can change quite a bit from month to month. |

I did trade him to the Orioles for Chris Davis and a couple of minor leaguers, and then traded Lucas Duda to the Dodgers for Howie Kendrick and a prospect

that can be a risk/reward I've noticed. Had Josh Johnson on a one-year incentive laden deal in 16 for my 2016 season. Nice bargain basement deal at 1y/4M with 1.5 mil in incentives (500k Cy Young, 125k All-Star which he got, 875k for 180 IP which he also landed). At the break, he wanted 2y/18M. He did fade some down the stretch but had a sub-4 ERA, and eventually got him on a one-year deal at seven million with a vesting option for a second year at 10 mil, along with about the same incentives (250k CYA, 100k AS, 1M 180 IP--vesting option set at 200 IP).
