The Curious Case of Dustin Pedroia
Boston and it's manager seem to hate him.
No matter the settings (default or custom, stat heavy or pure ratings) Pedroia always finds himself benched after a few months into the season despite his ratings and stats which are usually good. A few months in, Boston likes to move Mookie Betts from RF to 2B while not only benching Pedroia but relying on a variety of fringe RF's to cover who are also poor fielders. Boston end up scrambling for a replacement RF via trades, ending up getting marginal players at RF in return when they could have simply fixed their problem by moving Betts back to RF and starting Pedroia at 2nd. I noticed Harrell has a preference of power and speed. The guys who usually replace Pedroia in the lineup at RF always have a slightly better power (or equal) and of course way more speed. I know corner OF is not really a defensive position but I am not sure if the AI should sacrifice defense and a good bat just because the player is slow and have slightly less power than his replacement. Anyone else see similar things going on? Pedroia has a 7 rating (2-8) at 2B Last edited by SirMichaelJordan; 03-22-2016 at 03:11 PM. |

The Curious Case of Dustin Pedroia
Not in front of the game right now but is there a preference for defense/fielding for managers? I feel like that could fix something like this. I know there is a offense vs pitching slider but I don't remember anything for defense.

I wonder if that's related to defensive ratings?
Is Mookie highly rated at second? and not so highly rated in RF? Pedroia's defensive stats for second should be solid enough that they outweight Mookie's but if they don't you could boost them and lower Mookie's so that 2B is no longer an option (and then subsequently raise his RF rating)

On a 2-8 scale with 100% accurate ratings mookie betts has a 6 for 2nd base and about a 6 across the board for his infield ratings, his ratings at RF are pretty much similar while on the other hand Pedroia sports about 7's all around for infield and 2nd base. Its weird. Last edited by SirMichaelJordan; 03-22-2016 at 03:49 PM. |

Funny you bring this up. On the weekend i was running a few tests, and I installed the OOTP16 (2015 season) QS up to 17 to try
Within a month Carlos Correa became a 4 star guy, with no scouting on so 100% accuracy, and I checked Correa was a .280 rated hitter already but Houston with just a 1star shortstop would not bring Correa up even for one game all season. He played the entire year at AA. I kind of forgot about that until you mentioned what you saw with Pedroia. Same QS the Cubs had a releiver, umm Rodon maybe. 4 Star closer. They had him in AAA even though he played the entire year with the Cubs before, and only when I moved evaluation ratings to 80% ratings did they finally call him up. Not complaints, just mentioning so that others can look into their games to see what may need to be tweeked in future patches. March-April is still working in the game to what it becomes in May. |

Just happened again in a brand new sim (100% ratings) but this time Chris Young stayed at RF for most of the year hitting .241/.312./.449 with a.762 OPS.
Pedroia started only 93 games without any injuries slashing .300/.382./.433 with a .816 OPS. They just gave up on him with that large contract. Is he having an affair with the owner's daughter?

The sim engine seems to like him fine (his numbers look good), its' the manager/AI who don't seem to care for him.

There is defense vs offense slider and Farrell prefers offense over defense. He also prefers power over speed (I said he preferred speed in an older post) So yes I believe it's the manager's roster preference playing a role here. Pedroia is great at fielding but lacks the power (4 on a 2-8 scale) The guys replacing him at RF (Mookie moving to 2nd) have at least a 5 at power but sucks mostly everywhere else Pedroia beats them at. Chris Young (who's usually first in line to replace Pedroia until he starts to stink it up) for example is not bad in the OF but is inferior to Pedroia at batting but beats hit at power with only a 5. |

Force start players who have other primary positions to the positions you want. As long as pedroia isn't being replaced by another primary 2b player, he should remain the starter. I think.
The reasoning abive for why it's happening seems sound though. |

The Curious Case of Dustin Pedroia

This is the AI. Doesn't really make sense because in his minimal starts he usually hit more HR's then the fringe RF's who are only good at power but not by much. It would make better sense if these guys had tons of power. Im thinking power has too much of a influence because Farrell prefer offense the same amount as he does power yet Pedroia is in the dog house despite having overall better batting ratings than his replacements. Also once Brock Holt end up at RF he's plugged in at leadoff and stinks it up. That could be Pedroia leading off while batting close to .290 like he does in most of my sims. Right but it's using ratings over stats I can see how this would happen hence post above.

Multiple sims with different settings are having the same outcome. I don't think manager's preference takes stats into weight. I think he builds his lineups based on individual ratings even if you are playing 100% stats. Thats what prompt me to post this because he has a high OVR, hits more HR's but gets benched for scrubs who are supposed to hit for power slightly better. I thought managers player valuation influenced their lineup selection (among other factors like their game strategy) so if they vlaued ratings higher than stats that would contribute.
I could be wrong. I agree it's a problem. |

Its been discussed over the years that OVR actually don't influence lineups, its been said that it stops at whose on the 40 and active roster but that whole theory is contradicted because you see OVR having an influence in lineups in the minors when using the new feature of having lineups based on potential or current. So color me confused. With 100% stats and Pedroia playing great with a OVR close to 70, he's still benched for a guy who's in the 40's. Last edited by SirMichaelJordan; 03-23-2016 at 12:37 PM. |

Remember OOTP v6 where batters and pitchers in historical leagues were adjusted and/or made bad to account for small sample size? A similar concept should apply to multi-position players with limited fielding experience at any league level. The process is analogous.
