How to use the minors appears to be over my head
I feel so stupid. How hard can it be to play this game properly. I've never used minors before and it looks like I have no idea what I'm doing.
I have players who are out of DFA time and no where to put them. My only choice is to release them and then I'll just have 25 players and when someone gets injured, I could be toast. I use a 25 man roster and my secondary roster is set to 40. Big deal since I have to designate these guys but the only designation I can give them is to release them. Where are my minor league teams? Shouldn't I be able to send some players there? I don't have any option to do so. I'm feeling very stupid and about to give up on minors. I'd like to try it, but I can't seem to get anywhere. I'm in 1920 with the Washington Senators if that makes any difference. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Not all teams back then had minor league teams. Maybe the Senators didn't...

Can it be possible for the teams that don't have a minor league affiliate to default to having a reserve list? Then the reserve list would go away when that team has a minor league club.

IF you have historical minors checked, in 1920 only Det. and Stl. Cards had affiliated minors. You do not need to release the player, merely leave him on the 40 man roster (which can be expanded for more players - League settings>rules> click on 40 man roster and it will give you option to increase or decrease that number as your needs demand). Then you can put another player from that 40 man roster onto your active roster. With historical minor leagues, you cannot add your own minor league teams. (well, you can but they disappear at the end of the season and all those players go into free agent pool .... it's really not an option.)
IF you do NOT have historical minors checked, you can add your own minor league system. It's under league settings. Functions>available league actions> (drop down menue)add minor leagues. hope this helps a bit ..... still trying to learn about this new minor league system myself ... so some of this is just what i've learned and has worked for me at least temporarily and maybe not the absolute truth.

when the historical minor leagues appear in 1919, the reserve players thing disappears and becomes your 40 man roster .... even if your team doesn't have affiliated minors. That much i have figured out so far.

The question that should be asked is what would the 1920 Senators have to do? Did they actually have reserve teams or did they have to keep their roster at 25?

the reserve teams are gone after 1919. But WASH can "store" extra players in their 40 man roster (which can be expanded). It's a sort of reserve team, if you want to look at it that way, until they get their own minor leagues .... and i don't know which year that is ... might not be until 1933, when almost everyone seems to have the minors in place.
their regular roster is still 25 (unless you edit that larger as well).

So, it seems I'm beat if I want to use historical minors in 1920 (for example). Maybe something needs to be put in the game for the early years when a team didn't have minor league affiliates. Otherwise it seems 25 guys and that's all she wrote.

It's not working like the old reserve list. Apparently I'm not the only one seeing this. However the AI teams without minors are NOT having to do this. There are no transactions showing of guys being waived. They are using a reserve roster as in OOTP16. There are screens that SAY reserve roster, it's just not an option for me to move players there.
