Coaches getting new facegen faces

Some coaches are getting brand new facegens when the game turns a retired player into a coach. This doesn't appear to occur all of the time, and I am unable to determine why the bug only affects some coaches. Below are some screenshots where the issue is readily apparent. These appear to be brand new faces, rather than faces that have simply aged. The screenshots are from a test league I created, and I've uploaded the league's .dat files via FTP (file name "CobaltJays OOTP17 coach facegen bug.zip"). Of the coaches I looked at in the test league, the majority appeared to have new faces.

In the game's settings, I have it set to create pictures for all players and coaches, and to create pictures upon player creation.

I also reported this issue for OOTP16 last year. Note that the file I uploaded last year is still on the FTP site. I included "OOTP17" in the file name for this bug report to avoid confusion.

UPDATE: See post below. Issue appears related to the game not creating player photos "Upon Player Creation" after a league has been created.

Thanks for the report, again. Submitted this myself in previous version and was told either not an easy fix or couldn't fix. Maybe they'll have a new perspective on things now and find a way. I'm no coder, but seems it should just be a "keep pic, but change label" process. Guess it's not. Anyway, appreciate the follow up.

It would be disappointing if it's not fixed. In my fictional league, I scan the available coaches regularly to find newly created coaches and delete those with brand new faces. It's strange that it only happens with some coaches and not others.

Obviously, you've looked into more deeply than I have; my recollection was that none of them kept their old faces.

I think I've found the issues -- one is an obvious bug, and the other is likely a design issue.

Bug: After a league is created, player pictures are created on demand, even if you have them set to "Upon Player Creation" in the Facegen settings.

Design: When a coach needs a facegen, the game looks to see if there is a player facegen, and will create a new face if there isn't an existing player facegen. However, if the game needs to create a player facegen, it doesn't look to see if there's a coach facegen already for that player.

The issue with coaches having different faces appears to stem from their player facegens being created after their coach facegens. Fixing the bug above would resolve the issue for people who have "Upon Player Creation" enabled in the Facegen settings. For those who have "On Demand" enabled instead, the design issue would also need to be addressed. I'd be content with the bug being fixed for now, if the design issue is too much work. Alternatively, forcing an update/generation of player pictures once a year might be a workaround for players who want their coaches to have the same faces going forward.

In my test league, the coaches who had the same facegens as their playing days were created when the league was created (they were in the inaugural draft or with feeder teams), or had a baseball card generated at some point during the simulation. I've attached screenshots of a couple of these players. The game seems to create faces for everyone just fine when you start a new league, but it doesn't do that automatically afterwards like it should.

This also explains what I've seen in my fictional league -- coaches who played in the majors for a while or were in my organization at some point had the same faces as their playing days. Coaches who had brief playing careers were more likely to wind up with new faces. I also seem to remember forcing updates of player pictures periodically in my initial years with the league, which might explain why I've only seen this issue recently.

Hopefully Markus sees this and can at least address the "Upon Player Creation" bug mentioned above.

A short follow-up. I created a new test league and simmed ahead 30 years, but this time I set "Update / Generate Player Pictures" to "Each Jan. 1st". Every coach I looked at who was a former player had a facegen that matched the one in his player profile. The issue does appear to be that player pictures aren't being created "Upon Player Creation" like they should be.

Hopefully it'll be possible to fix this issue. If it isn't, thankfully there is a workaround for it.
