My review/my issues
I love OOTP. If you stopped making the game in 2012 it would STILL be the best baseball simulation game anywhere. Starting from this perspective, the advances made ALL THROUGH OOTP17 are absolutely amazing.
I've played OOTP17 for about 6 total hours since I DL'ed it on Friday. I never played 3D very much — I just seem to prefer reading along with the full detail PbP and using my imagination in broadcast view. One reason I don't use 3D mode so much is that the player ratings disappear during PbP and that bugs me for some reason. Not a big deal at all though. Standard regular season play is smooth as usual. If it's quicker than OOTP16, I haven't noticed, but I thought OOTP ran pretty darn fast on my MacBook Pro Retina. Historical Exhibition mode is an excellent addition. I've waited since 2012 to get this and have spent hours organizing series and tournaments, etc. But there are things about the Historical Exhibition that bug me a little bit. X -- The player ratings are hard set on the 20-80 scale, which I've never used and cannot get used to (yet). I wish there was a way to set player ratings back to the 1-20 scale for Historical Exhibition. But considering that I get this at all, this is a minor quibble. X -- PbP is buggy in Historical Exhibition mode. For example, if Reggie Sanders is in right field and Barry Bond is in left field, every ball hit to LEFT field is fielded by "Reggie Sanders!" It's the same with some infield ground balls. A ball hit to second base will be fielded by the third baseman (according to the PbP broadcast). Again, a minor thing overall, but if it can be fixed, it would be nice. X -- Player ages change hilariously when teams from different eras are matched against each other. One team's player ages were listed in the upper 40s to upper 50s (Keith Hernandez, age 54) while the other team was loaded with toddlers and teenagers (J.T. Snow, age 3). This has no effect whatsoever on game play, but it's a bit of a cosmetic eyesore. NONE of this is going to keep me from enjoying OOTP17 in any way, though. Fixing these things would sure increase my enjoyment, but on the whole, I'm just so super delighted to have OOTP in my life and I'm thankful every day for Markus and the whole team. I love this game. |

I was the one who "complained" about the "change pitcher" button. My gripe was in reference to it being there when you have the warm up rule "OFF", in which case, you would never need to use a mound visit to buy time. However, in hindsight, I have found myself in situations where I'll use the mound visit to gauge where my pitcher is at and then it will make sense to take him out. It was just different, and I can adjust. No big deal. |

I have to say that so far, my favorite new feature is the post-game recap, hands down. It just gives each game a more realistic feel. Those writeups will improve in quality each year now that it's been implemented, but I like that it will make note of winning streaks, fast or slow starts, comeback wins, etc. It's a really nice touch.

Am loving this so much. A couple little details that made me happy in my 2016 Red Sox play through
#1: Seeing Curtis Granderson scored his 1,000th career run on June 22nd, 2016 after I got to July 1st. Neat factoid that helps with league immersion. #2: It's a small thing and not sure if it came with the end of OOTP 16 but I like simming games out a week/month and seeing the scores of my team's games without having to go to the main schedule menu. |

Trouble with Coaching Relationships
Now in my second season when I try to hire a new manager for a minor league team it will only show the relationships with the major league club. I even tried searching for personnel through the minor league team's front office page. Is there a way to fix this so I can see how prospective staff might mesh with the club I want to hire them to?
Thanks. |

Here are the few big things for me:
1. Man this game is amazing. I would write a list of everything I love but that'd be too long. The biggest difference for me is everything just runs so much faster. Great job. Now for two complaints: 1. When playing the game in 3D wide view, a couple of things happen. If a play happens where you have to decide whether to try for an extra base or not, the ball will essentially replay the animation it just did. It's not a huge deal, but a bit of an annoyance. 2. The other thing that is bugging me (and a bit more than the other), is that during the animation of the play there are times where say a runner is on first and then a double is hit. The runner on first gets to third and the ball is at the cut off man. If the guy is fast enough he will score which is completely fine. There are plenty of guys that can score from first on a double. The problem is that in the animation there is clearly either enough time to get the ball to home for an out or at least make it close. Here, the ball sits while the runner advances from 3rd to home. That isn't even really that big of a deal either. It just doesn't make the animation fluid. With those two minor issues aside, I'm addicted. Thanks a lot! |

I'm a little confused about my historical league and how it's importing rookies.
I started a sim in 1946 with default settings. Assuming it works like past versions this setting should have rookies appear with the fist team they played for: ![]() But after the 1946 seasson my Athletics did not receive any players and the list of available free agents is over 900 players: ![]() For example, Dick Lane. The first thing I always do with a new league is clear the entire history. This league started with 1946 but he has stats for 1945: ![]() Looking at his real life stats it looks like he sat 1946 out and didn't make his MLB debut until 1949. Did he import because he played in the minors in 1947? And if so why is he a free agent rather than being assigned to the minor league team he debuted with (even though he actually debuted in 1945)? ]Looking further I thought maybe these were all players who sat out 1946 but played in a later year but here's a guy who only played in 1945. He didn't appear in the first year of the sim, 1946, but showed up as a free agent in the offseason: ![]() ![]() This is with a historical sim starting in 1946 with default settings. The only thing I did other than start the sim with the wizard is delete the entire league history right after creating the game. |

I have started my fictional league fresh with this version. My fictional league started as a 12 team, 2 league association and expanded to 16 teams, two league (2 divisions) after 10 years.
So far I am loving the simming speed of the game, when I was trying to build history for this league. What seemed to take hours before took about 15 minutes (I am not sure the actual amount of time, but it was much shorter). I simmed 10 years before expansion, then simmed another 6 before I took over a team. I have been managing out my games, while playing in 3D mode. I have enjoyed watching the pawns as it has added some fun to managing out the games not as much needs to be read. As suggested, I have used the shortened pbp which is fine as I have been watching the action on the field. My only complaint with the shorter pbp, is that when I try to steal a base it appears as if I decided not to swing at the pitch, instead of did not get a good jump. I have enjoyed the UI layout. With a little work I have been able to get around the information that I have needed. Now if I can figure out how to make my team play better, so I don't get frustrated .......... I appreciate the work the OOTP team has put into this version. Hoping that I finally stick with an association and can finally win some titles.

Well....an early impression
I do not know about anyone else and their opinions, but let me give my first impressions:
1) Wow....love the hyperlinks to the real teams. That will save me time looking for them..hehe 2) Much easier to read the information on screen. Love the new style. The little schedule on the upper right, actually, I like it because it gives me an idea to start thinking of how to set lineups based on early projected starters. 3) Game recaps / WPAs.... 4) FaceGen....hmmm...like it, but I don't recall Babe Ruth having a mustache...LOL 5) I love the Historical minors coming into play... 6) Trading of injured players....haven't experienced it yet...but looking forward to it. 7) The 3D play is fantastic. Makes me want to watch things happen. Looking forward to the continued evolution of this. 8) Only concern so far is regarding the facial expressions (player moods) are they supposed to be larger than they have been in the past??? 9) Don't worry about the manual...we know it is a work in progress and there are more important things to be looking at....like the bugs and the beer intake and of course OOTP18 planning...LOL 10) Did I mention, I love how much faster things run then before....looking forward to 64-bit !!! Keep it going, Markus and team....we look forward to total enjoyment.

17 Impression
First know that my playground is old teams with no trades or anything else. It is simply teams of the past competing against each other in a league.
So, impression....17 is essentially 16. other than the ease in setting exhibition historical games and series (as opposed to league play) it isi the same game and not worth the update. Having said that, I enjoy OOTP games so am OK with things. |

It's a little thing, but I like it - adding the 'All-Star Voting' red link to the quick menu. I could never figure out where that and the HoF voting were and i had to find a link in the mail to do it. Thanks!

So, am I right that the game is importing players from the minor league database for drafts? I started a quick test league in 1984, real stats not neutralized, with full historical minors. I sim to the draft. All the real players import as one or two stars (no scouts), and when you go to their "Real Life Stats," it only shows their minor league stats. So their ratings are all, I take it, based on that? The problem is that Barry Bonds is importing as a one star center fielder, etc.

Markus,
I haven't played OOTP17 enough make any final game or AI pronouncements, but some of the niggly things I've complained about in the past remain in force: 1. You still get AI players trying to steal bases or getting thrown out trying to take the extra base when they're down by 8 runs. 2. The pitcher warmup rule still isn't working. Knowing that I'm going to change pitchers the next inning, I'll start warming them up before my team's first out. 40 percent of the time they're "cold" or still "warming up," 40 percent of the time they're "tiring," and only 20 percent of the time they're "ready." 3. Perhaps the games takes this into account, but you can't warm up a pitcher during a rain delay when you know the current guy is gonna come out of it "exhausted." That's it for now. |
