Week 1 (March 30-April 4)
Tuesday (Opening Day)
In the first game of the two-game Yankees-Devil Rays series in Tokyo, Mike Mussina managed to give a stellar eight-inning start to get his 200th career win and beat the Devil Rays, 8-3. Mussina outdueled Mark Hendrickson, who left the game after just 5 innings after giving up 3 runs to the Yankees, and the Yanks took a golden opportunity and scored three runs off of Danys Baez, as well as two runs off of other bullpen arms. Multiple RBIs came from Kenny Lofton, Derek Jeter, and Alex Rodriguez, while Tampa Bay got two of its three runs from Aubrey Huff. Mussina is now tied with Chuck Finley for 100th in all-time wins. His next win will tie Rube Marquard and Charlie Root. Wednesday, March 31 On this day, many, many players were claimed off waivers (but more on that later). In Tokyo, the Bronx Bombers again took down the Rays, this time with an 8-6 win. In a six-inning effort, Jon Lieber pitched 6 innings and gave up just as many runs, four earned. However, Tampa Bay starter Todd Ritchie was shelled, giving up 6 runs in a fifth inning rally capped by a three run homer by Alex Rodriguez. Other multi-RBI games came from Jason Giambi and Aubrey Huff. Notable waiver claims: Hector Carrasco (SDP) Jesus Colome (OAK) Mike DeJean (TBR) Scott Downs (PIT) Scott Elarton (PIT) Daniel Garcia (ANA) Matt Ginter (HOU) Steve Kline (CIN) Xavier Nady (MIN) Wes Obermueller (CWS) Cliff Politte (SDP) Bill Pulsipher (ATL) Emmanuel Ramirez (ATL) JC Romero (NYY) Justin Speier (HOU) Salomon Torres (MIL) Sunday, April 4 Despite an excellent start by Pedro Martinez, the Red Sox lost in a pitcher's duel to the Orioles, 4-2. Martinez turned out seven innings of three-run ball, but Sidney Ponson bested him by giving up only two runs in seven innings. Baltimore was aided most by a two-run homer by Melvin Mora in the bottom of the third. Boston almost came back in the sixth when Nomar Garciaparra, David Ortiz, and Manny Ramirez loaded the bases with no outs, but Jason Varitek attempted a sacrifice fly, and Nomar Garciaparra was doubled off by left fielder Larry Bigbie. Players of the week: American League - Alex Rodriguez (NYY) National League - no games played |
