Nicknames

Is there a way to prevent the game from generating nicknames, yet I can add them if I want to? Can I do this just by editing the "nickname.txt text file" and eliminating all the names in it? To become more immerse in my game, I don't want to have the random nick names generated, but would rather myself assign nicknames to players I believe are "special." I want the names I enter to show up. This would help me recognize particular players through the years.

In your OOTP16/database folder, there's a nick_names.txt.

I haven't tried it, but I'd assume that deleting the contents (only the contents, the actual file needs to exist) or changing the name to nick_name_backup.txt and creating a blank nick_names.txt would result in no nicknames being created.

Then to give a player a nickname, you just go to the player's profile, and to the Editor tab, and then edit the Nickname field. This doesn't require commissioner mode, because it's only a cosmetic change.

I believe that, if you add a nickname yourself, that nickname then becomes part of the game's database, and it will randomly assign that nickname to future players, even if you have a blank nicknames.txt file. So if you want to give a player the nickname "Mr. September," you might find a rookie coming along a few years later with the same nickname.

I'm of the opinon that's correct, joe. I think, that being the case, it's an unfortunate drawback. I haven't tried, but I wonder if after naming such a player, then deleting it from the database, will keep the nickname and avoid the future occasion. Lot of work though, for something that I would think could be automated.

In "Game Settings" you'll find "Re-import name & ethnicity database" in the "Database Tools" dropdown menu. No need to export it first - in fact, don't do that at all.

I subscribed to that thread. That's the only way I could have remembered it.

Just wondering, can you just manually delete the nicknames and then add your own, then manually delete any that were created in the draft? If you sort by nickname in a list and you then edit player profile, you can easily scroll through everyone with a nickname. Probably would take about 5 - 10 minutes.

I have no idea.
