According to OOTP itself, OOTP MLB play (modern and historical) outnumbers OOTP fictional play three to one.

This is such a weird discussion. There are people asking for a real-life MLB rule to NOT be included in OOTP.

The mind boggles.

I don't think that MLB was set-up to break tie-breakers concerning a 70 team playoff. I could have 5 teams tied for the same playoff position. Don't think that has ever happened before in MLB.

I don't think the game should even be considering the bizarre set-ups you like to play. It SHOULD cover the actual MLB rules. Whether people like them or not.

How many teams make the playoffs in NCAA College Basketball?

32 conference champions and 36 at-larges, for a total of 68.

I'm not asking for anything to be changed in the game. I was just discussing how I think ties should be resolved in the MLB.

I just had this same issue.. too bad for Milwaukee.

3 way tie between Milwaukee, San Francisco and Los Angeles. If you add up head to head records, it was Milwaukee, LA and then SF.

What happens? OOTP schedules a tiebreaker game between SF and LA. SF wins and now they are in but Milwaukee never had a chance. Milwaukee should have hosted SF in one last game if I understand the tiebreaker rules correctly?

Hope this is fixed someday.

I think this should definately be fixed as the point in a baseball season is to advance to the post-season. Sucks if you don't get a chance do to codding issue.

As I suggested in a post about a year ago, I don't see why it's not just a simple solution of having the OPTION to "end season and proceed to playoffs" button. This would end the season as is, with no additional games being played. Once in playoff mode, you could then seed teams however you choose. This would allow 100% customization for everyone. If you want to keep the default game AI logic you could by not ever clicking the button; if you want to schedule your own tie-breaker games you could just edit the schedule to add tie breaker games at season end and then click the button "end season and proceed to playoffs"; if you don't want any tie breaker games but would rather use a statistic to determine tie breakers, again just delete any remaining scheduled games by the AI and click the button "proceed to playoffs." In all cases, once in playoff mode the game already allows you to edit seeding.

Not sure if I'm way off base here, but that seems like such a simple solution and would allow everyone to deal with ties as they see appropriate.

Actually, in the case of a real-life three-way tie, the first step is relative head-to-head records. That means you rank the clubs by its record in the season series against each of the other clubs. For example, if one club had won both season series against the other two, then it would get first pick as to whether to be club A, B, or C in the tie-breaker.

Only if the clubs had identical records against each other, or their was a split in season series against each other, then the total head-to-head record is used (i.e. sum of the record of each club's results against the others and whichever has the highest winning percentage gets first selection).

In the case of a three-way tie for one wild card spot, the real-life procedure is as follows:

Day 1—B at A (winner plays on day 2; loser eliminated)
Day 2—C at A/B (winner gets wild card; loser eliminated)

In the case of a three-way tie for two wild card spots, the real-life procedure is:

Day 1—B at A (winner gets first wild card; loser plays on day 2)
Day 2—A/B at C (winner is second wild card; loser eliminated)

Note that teams get to CHOOSE their spots.

In real life, Baltimore took 1 at home (in a three-team/two-WC tiebreaker with DET/TOR) over 2 on the road.
