The first thread...

...and, of course, the least substantive one. Being first has its cost, I suppose.

Now the waiting truly begins.

Waiting is the hardest part. And we'll still have to wait another month for the game to actually come out.

Yep, especially that last week or so. It's almost unbearable. As much as I enjoy and look forward to the annual release of games like MLB The Show and Madden, there's no other game that elicits this kind of nervous anticipation in me.

Maybe Hearts of Iron IV will come close once a release date is finally announced, but that's only because it's been years in the making and literally twenty something video development diaries to whet one's appetite over. OOTP can draw out those feelings of hand-rubbing desire every year.

You'll have buy the $2.99 DLC so you get the .exe file that runs the game. Then when you run it for the first time you'll have to buy the $2.99 DLC that lets you save the game.

I am also a big Hearts of Iron player since the 1st one came out years ago.

I really wish Paradox would get this game out soon.

Yeah, to a certain extent I agree that their business model is, to put it in G-Rated terms, just a pinch on the avaricious side. Johan & co. obviously know they have us Historical Grand Strategy & Wargamers at an almost complete disadvantage. There aren't any other companies that produce these types of games, or at least not as competently and meticulously as they do. It's a niche market.

However, as we're currently seeing with the development of HOI IV, Paradox games aren't so much programmed to fill that niche as much as they are handcrafted to fill it. They're putting in a lot of time to ensure this incredibly complex game is developed right with as few bugs as possible. There are precious few game developers we can say the same thing about. For that they deserve a lot of credit, and fair compensation. That's why I don't really begrudge them too much (well, maybe a little when it crosses the ridiculous, like asking us to pay for additional music and unit packs) for their hat-in-hand approach.

I keep hoping that KOEI, makers of some of my favorite strategy games in the 1990s (Genghis Khan, Liberty or Death, Uncharted Waters & sequels, PTO, Nobunaga's Ambition, etc.), will get back in the business of producing strategy games full time and make updated versions of the aforementioned classics. With the exception of Nobanaga's Ambition and Uncharted Waters Online (blah), they've left their old small but fanatically loyal fanbase high and dry, at least in the West.

Oh well...

And that is why I can't get into CK2.

Having attempted to play HOI3, without any kind of preparation, I can say that the learning curve is extremely tough. There are certain systems, such as the supply system, that quite literally aren't explained at all. Tutorials are almost non-existent, and you kind of have to buy the Expansion Packs to get it as it was supposed to be. And this is coming from a guy who really loves the game. From what I can gather, Paradox is making HOI4 more like Europa Universalis 4, another game they do which was so many times easier to understand. I would honestly just wait until HOI4 is released. Sorry for the long response, but this is one subject on these forums I actually have some knowledge about.

Can you DM me and tell me more about Europa Universalis 4 as well as HOI3? I'm extremely interested but this thread has already hijacked.

Anyone else who would like to do that as well please do. I'm always eager to add more games to my repertoire.

The OP doomed this thread to off topic the minute he posted it it.

But...it was the first thread and that is whats important.

I mean it's just the first one. Not the last, not the middle, not the beginning, just the first. I respect that. Especially since I potentially learned about another game to "play" while I wait for OOTP 17. And especially with my other game being "corrupted" hopefully within repair but I digress...

(actually I did a while ago)

As every one knows it is always considered a win to get the first thread in a forum. All ensuing threads are losers to the winner no matter the content.

In my whole life I have never gotten the 1st thread.
