				1907: Phillies Spring Training, Savannah

The 1907 season lay dead ahead for the Philadelphia Phillies, but they took a few minutes to goof around for a fancy new camera during a break in their drills at Savannah, Ga.

First-year Manager Billy Murray, in the suit, chats with (left to right) pitcher Lew Richie, catcher Fred Jacklitsch, pitcher Lew Moren and infielder Frank Wiener. Weiner seems to be lost to history, as the only Baseball Reference player who is a match for him is an "unknown" Wiener who played in the minors briefly in 1906. From the Lexibell files. |

No. As he's identified above, it's a minor league lefthanded pitcher named Mike Price. Werhas - among other things - was a righthanded third baseman.

				Hal Reilly 1916 MISSING PLAYER

From the newspaper The Tennesseean, of Nashville, TN, dated May 2, 1916. Shown in the uniform of the Nashville Volunteers. Baseball-reference.com does not list Reilly with Nashville, but the article clearly labels him as outfielder Hal Reilly. Furthermore, an article in the June 27, 1916 Arkansas Gazette places him with South Bend of the Central League at that point (consistent with baseball-reference.com) and says that he was with Nashville of the Southern League earlier in the season.

				Ken Crawford 1915 MISSING PLAYER

From Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, March 28, 1915. Described as well-know local amateur baseball player from Edgewood Park. I had traced Ken Crawford to the Pittsburgh area through other articles. He had been cited as a baseball star for the East Liberty Academy.

Charles "Buck" Sweeney 1914 - MISSING PLAYER

The photo on the left is from the Pittsburgh Daily Post of September 16, 1915. The one on the right shows him in a Duquesne University uniform, and is from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette of May 1, 1915. Both captions labelled him as Buck Sweeney. I had found a third photo of him in a Duquesne football uniform (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette of December 13, 1914) which explicitly called him Charles "Buck" Sweeney. Previous research had determined that he had attended Duquesne and was from the Pittsburgh area.

				One Lexibell Folder's Treasures...

It is Lexibell Folder LEX 52, and it might be the richest, neatest, coolest assortment I've seen so far in one 100-image folder.

Its varied contents include... The final stops in two itenerant careers: Dave Philley (Red Sox, 1962, 38 games and 42 at-bats), and Gus Niarhos (Phillies, 1954-55, 10 total games, 14 at-bats). Last edited by rico43; 02-09-2016 at 12:52 AM. |

... Two Potential White Whales ...

Found are a nice Cubs head shot of pitcher George Piktuzis (two games in 1956, 5.1 IP)

And journeyman pitcher Marino Pieretti, who flunked this 1956 tryout with the Phillies. And a legedary 1960 fight involving Jimmy Piersall. The first shows first baseman Luke Easter trying mightily to calm Piersall down in the third such flare-up since he was hit in the wrist by a Jim Bunning pitch. The initial brawl wound up with Piersall being pinned to the turf by manager Jimmie Dykes and teammate Vic Power (10). And the most obscure Lexibell find yet, over in the minors thread.... |

Irvin Hach 1897 - MISSING PLAYER

Irvin "Major" Hach is shown in this photo from the August 14, 1936 issue of the Louisville (KY) Courier-Journal. In the photo, he was posed with Honus Wagner, who was coach of the Pittsburgh Pirates at the time. He was traded for Wagner in 1897 by the Louisville Colonels. The photo was published as an obituary. Hach had been employed as part of a weed-clearing crew. He died in an odd accident when riding a street-cleaning truck. He stood up to shift his position and fell off the truck, hitting his head on the pavement.
