The ABL has expanded in time for the 2016 winter season. The first team to move up to the elite division of baseball down under is the Geelong Baycats, joining the Central Division. Geelong joins the ABL after spending numerous years playing in the second tier. Purchased by Sydney casino magnate James Packer following the 2015 season, the team will play at the Geelong Baseball Complex at Waurn Pond.

The next team to be granted an expansion franchise is the Sunshine Coast Falcons. The Falcons, brought under the sporting club umbrella of the RLFC's Sunshine Coast rugby squad, will play their home games at Quad Park.
