What is the best team you've ever managed?
Set team records for wins (125 over 122), strikeouts (1776 over 1741), K/BB (10.89 over 10.85), and hits allowed (1193 over 1207). Second for all-time WHIP (1.090) and batting BB (926). Two personal record were set. Myron Conley for wins (29 over 28) and less impressively Juan Luis "God's Hammer" Garcia set the batting strikeout record with 286 over the previous record 279.
Caveat: I did create one of the players (Jon Snow), but he isn't very good at the moment and he was drafted by another team before I traded my whole farm team for him. EDIT: Three of my starters were lost for most of the season including the playoffs. EDIT 2: I just remembered I actually traded two all-stars (OPS+ of 125 and 121 and a combined WAR of 6.6 this season) and my top prospect for Snow not my entire farm system. with draft pick trading on, i got to 140+wins before, LoL.
it's really bad for your closer when you start winning that much. he only plays 40-some games and maybe gets 20-25saves. draft pick trading is a little easy to exploit. you can always draft high, and once your minors are stocked, you rollover the ones that don't fit your plans for more draft picks. you can have 2-to-4 or more top picks every year (in the top-5 or top-10 depending). the first thing i did in the offseason was to trade my #1, #19-16 for the highest pick in return - usually the #1 but sometimes lower. then i wouldn't lose my #1 pick from free agent compensation. since you always have a good amount of young players on your team, you can spend like a drunken sailor most years in the FA market. matching more expensive shorter FA contracts with club control years of the young'ens. i didn't even spend my budget, i bet i could get to 150+ wins with draft pick trading on. i do not use that option in ootp16. i still peak at 120s-130s wins with my better teams over time. i actually do keep it on, i jsut don't allow myself to trade for the all the top picks like i described.
when i have excess talent or talent that doesn't fit, i trade them for existing prospects or a needed piece for my mlb team. the results are nearly as good. i usually have a well-stocked system. i look at replacing players as a 3year window. i jump on the first suitable replacement that can last at least 5 years. even if slightly worse talent. you can go to the playoffs every year in this game with good roster management. i will push the limits or ignore my process in order to maximize wins on occasion. i do like setting records, too. i bet we could get to 140wins without exploits, too. joe D hitting for what? %$#@$^ lol i'd have sh&t myself. you have too many obp guys, you need rbi producers. i see 3 bonafide ones. i see names that should be, but the numbers arent there. i've never seen the "stopper" 2ndary role. is that due to historical play or due to 4-man rotation settings? normal and neutral. scouting is normal accuracy. the other teams get more than what i get in return, most of the time. it's a 19rd draft for a 28-team league, if that affects things. i probably toss in a something higher than 16th rd to get in the top-10 or top 5. it's been a while since i did this, but it was predictable to a point. if one doesn't take it with "ok i'll think about it" the next one will eventually.
i do some things differently with int'l FA too. unless i was over the 3m cap default from the previous year, i make sure to have 10-20million of budget available (cash on hand limited to 10m, i keep 10m in budget = 20). mlb roster always takes precedence, though. if i had to sign an expensive FA to stay a ws-caliber team, then i will sacrifice that 10m-20m padding anyday. i will go nuts any year i see multiple worthy signees - or even a bunch of middling to above average. if it's a weak year, i will not go over, but i may sign some midding-to-above average types. even if they are not exactly what i look for, i know i will be able to trade them later. i am aggressive about getting them into the system. age means very little to me. i go purely on current ratings. if your team is successful for consecutive years, this is almost necessary, since you won't get much talent out of the draft without a bit of luck. Fear the wrath of the baseball gods following a perfect season. I lost my whole rotation save my #3, my star 3B, my 1B, and my stopper/closer.
Edit: Just lost my starting LF for 4 weeks as well. Edit #2: Just lost my starting 2B. The gods are angry. Edit #3: Aaaaand there goes my last SP. Last edited by polydamas; 01-14-2016 at 11:41 PM. |

1872 Boston Red Stockings
Inagural Draft + one off-season of free agency. Trading is disabled. Historians may debate later if the National Association was indeed 'major' but the win total speaks for itself, just shy of the RL 1875 Red Stockings .899 clip.
