2029 Most Valuable Player Award

The year 2029 brings us yet another first, one that has forced the renaming of the "Silver Slugger" award to the "Most Valuable Player Award". The reason the award was renamed is because a pitcher has won the award for the first time...

Georgetown Ace Named DE Conference MVP

When you have the type of year Ricardo González did, it's no surprise when you get named the recipient of the MVP Award.

The 26-year-old captured the award for the Delaware Conference today, after a year in which the Georgetown Sixteens pitcher excelled.

In 32 starts he piled up 236.2 innings, had 306 strikeouts with 45 walks and a 1.41 ERA. González held opposing hitters to a .188 batting average and compiled a 12.5 WAR along the way.

Ryan Sutton of the New Castle Colonials finished second in voting, while Mike Johnson of the Milton Brewers finished third.

2029 Best Player Picked By MarVa Conference

Manuel Miranda took DELMARVA Baseball League by storm this year and he did it all at the age of 20.

For his spectacular campaign, the Washington Senators star has been named the 2029 MarVa Conference MVP Award recipient.

"To be considered amongst the best in the league is pretty overwhelming," said the first baseman.

On the season he compiled a .317 batting average to go with a .371 on-base percentage. The native of Maracaibo, Venezuela also added 26 doubles, 3 triples, 53 home runs, 135 RBIs and 103 runs scored.

Ricardo Hidalgo of the Washington Senators finished second in voting, while Ryan Urbina of the Ocean City Tourists finished third.

Ricardo Gonzalez
A look at Ricardo Gonzalez history in the DBL, at only 26 years old the future remains super bright for this kid. If (WHEN) I leave the Sixteens this is the type of pitcher that you'd want around to build your team around. He is great in the clubhouse and he can turn any game around at any time. It was an amazing season having him on my team.

News out of Georgetown

Well it took us winning the Championship to make the owner happy, but he still isn't completely satisfied with the direction of the team. He has mentioned he would like to keep me around for along "fruitful" relationship to help him bring home another Championship over the next 6 seasons. And after saying all that he has decided to keep our budget the same, despite a huge increase in fans from opening day to the end of the season. This is from an owner who liked to flaunt 200M+ budgets even though the Sixteens couldn't make the playoffs.

Its nice to see Matt Hardy "Happy", but I am pretty sure the only reason is because we brought him the Championship. If we didn't I am sure he would breathing down my neck expecting me to make magic happen. The only other "goal" of his we reached this year was having a top prospect, and with Chris Brock we definitely have that! I feel even though all he wanted us to do is play .500 he wanted instant success and wasn't willing to wait for it. And yes that bothers me because I had a plan and he wasn't willing to go along with my plan he had his own plan. I will remind you that the Sixteens have never made the playoffs in their history. I was able to get us to the playoffs in season 2 of my tenure. Yes I spent money. Yes I made trades. But I made this team not only better for the now, but was building on something for the future. Hardy didn't see it that way, at least he didn't make me feel like he saw it that way.

This brings us to 2030 the year and the DBL is expanding from 20 to 24 teams. This expansion brings an exciting opportunity, not only to the league, but to me. With that said, I have decided to end my career with the Georgetown Sixteens, after 2 seasons, and take the GM position with the Chadds Ford Cannons of the Northern Division.

I look forward to this challenge and building this team up...

Tony Luca Hired to Shake Things Up as New General Manager of Chadds Ford Cannons:
Tony Luca and several of the Chadds Ford Cannons players visited with some school children as they took time out from a busy schedule.

The newly-appointed GM has proven he's more than just a baseball man: He's a humanitarian as well.

"Baseball is a community sport, and a general manager needs to be more than just a numbers guy. You need to get out in the community. It's easier if you're winning, but the fans need to know that you're in their corner - that you're a member of the community, not stuck up in your office all the time."

Here is a look at my history as GM. NOTE: I have only operated as the GM during my years. I pick lineups and rotations. I make the transactions and run the minor leagues (for the most part). But I sim out the regular season games. During the playoffs I play out every game. The "manager of the year" awards that I have won have been given to the managers who deserved them.

Chadds Ford News
We have the #2 pick in the upcoming expansion draft. The expansion draft will be 35 rounds and will be a serpentine mode. Each team will be able to protect 25 players and can NOT have more than 7 players taken from them. This should shake up the DBL powers a little bit.

Our Budget given to us is $65,000,000 so I will have to get pretty creative. I will have have to see what kind of roster we have in a few months knowing there won't be any $20M a year signings.

Market Size: Small
Fan Loyalty: Average
Fan Interset: 100
Budget Ranking: 22nd (tied)

Over the next week I will have to spend time filling in the coaching positions that are open. See what kind of free agents are going to be available and figure out what I am going to target. Speed? Defense? Pitching? Power? I won't be able to get it all. I am hoping for some steals during the expansion draft, but we will see. I do know I will be going after YOUTH.

Here is the most important thing of them all, the goals from the owner, need to keep him happy if I want to stay around a while.

Personal Message from Owner Ralph Corbin: New Goals:

Tony,

Welcome to the Chadds Ford Cannons organization. I trust that our working relation will be a good one.
I will submit some new goals each year that I would like to see you accomplish. As well as winning on the field and turning a profit, completing these goals is the best way to keep me happy:

Don't suck completely
Have a final total balance of $13,500,000
Find a top 12 prospect
Build a top-5 minor league system
Keep building your team up, in order to reach the playoffs in the next 5 seasons

I will check in with you again next season. Good Luck!

Ralph Corbin

This is going to be interesting.

2030 Expansion Draft

Here is a look at the first round picks of the expansion draft. The first two both come from the Norfolk Cavaliers organization, #3 comes from the Seaford Bluejays and the final pick, the most interesting one of all, was from the Wilmington Iron Pigs and is 41-years-old...

Drafted RP Armando López in the 2029 expansion draft (Round 1, Pick 1, 1st overall pick).
Drafted RP Ángel Rivera in the 2029 expansion draft (Round 1, Pick 2, 2nd overall pick).
Drafted RP Mark Sullivan in the 2029 expansion draft (Round 1, Pick 3, 3rd overall pick).
Drafted RP James McLaughlin in the 2029 expansion draft (Round 1, Pick 4, 4th overall pick).

My goal with this draft was to target starting pitching and try to build around them. After pitching I tried to find guys with speed, who played solid defense, who weren't too awful with the bat. I did all the picking, but I always asked my scout, Michael Markey, for his opinion first. We actually agreed quite a bit. I feel like we are going to have a fairly decent team and I am happy with our picks, especially our #1 and #2 picks. I am getting excited about this team, I mean we aren't going to win it all, but we are building a foundation.

My first two picks came from the Norfolk Cavaliers organization and will be instantly inserted as my #1 and #2 starters.

Drafted RP Ángel Rivera in the 2029 expansion draft (Round 1, Pick 2, 2nd overall pick).
Drafted RP Lazzaro Tadiotto in the 2029 expansion draft (Round 2, Pick 3, 7th overall pick).

Rivera is a 4* extreme ground ball pitcher. With some pretty solid ratings (13/13, 15/15, 12/12). Tadiotto should of made the Cav's roster while I was there, but due to the depth of the team and his options he always ended up down on the farm. He will be the #2 and is is another 4* groundball pitcher with solid ratings (15/15, 12/12, 14/14).

From there the draft wasn't so great, but I feel like we shouldn't be too awful this season, however we do have a lot of building to do.

Drafted RP Juan Fernández in the 2029 expansion draft (Round 3, Pick 2, 10th overall pick).

Fernandez is another 4* pitcher who has bounced around quite a bit. He is a groundball pitcher with decent ratings, he will start the season as a set-up man most likely, but could see some time in the rotation (12/12, 13/13, 11/11).

Drafted CF Jaime Villarreal in the 2029 expansion draft (Round 4, Pick 3, 15th overall pick).

Villareal is fast OF'er that will be starting in LF come day one (most likely) he has played in the bigs, but not very much. Our offense is lacking in contact, and I am hoping Jamie will surprise (8/8, 10/10, 4/4, 6/6, 10/10)

The following two picks I have experience with in Georgetown. I acquired Noble as a prospect and traded Burns away.

Drafted RP Matt Noble in the 2029 expansion draft (Round 5, Pick 2, 18th overall pick).
Drafted RF Vance Burns in the 2029 expansion draft (Round 6, Pick 3, 23rd overall pick).

Noble wasn't quite ready in Georgetown, but he will be here in the Ford. He will be in the bullpen, and should fit in nicely with Fernandez as the the set-up men (11/13, 11/11, 13/14). Noble could be our future closer. Burns lead the league 3 seasons ago with 51 steals, and I am hoping he will be able to get on base enough to steal again this season. He isn't the player he once was, but from the looks of it he should be able to produce (10/10, 9/9, 10/10, 7/7, 14/14)

The next group of players were basically drafted because they play good defense. I am not expecting big numbers form any of these guys, but I do want them to field the ball and hopefully pick up a steal or two every now and then.

Drafted SS Arturo Longoria in the 2029 expansion draft (Round 7, Pick 2, 26th overall pick).
Drafted 2B Enrique Maldonado in the 2029 expansion draft (Round 8, Pick 3, 31st overall pick).
Drafted 3B Tony Inman in the 2029 expansion draft (Round 9, Pick 2, 34th overall pick).
Drafted SS Kel Reid in the 2029 expansion draft (Round 10, Pick 3, 39th overall pick).
Drafted 2B Sixto Hernández in the 2029 expansion draft (Round 11, Pick 2, 42nd overall pick).

Longoria (Contact: 6/6, SS: 17, Speed: 17, Stealing: 16, Baserunning: 20).
Maldonado (Contact: 8/8, SS/2B: 18, Speed 16: Stealing: 20, Baserunning: 20
Inman (Contact: 9/9, 3B: 19, Speed: 15, Stealing: 20, Baserunning: 20)
Reid (Contact: 6/6, 3B/SS: 20, Speed: 11, Stealing; 20, Baserunning: 20)
Hernandez (Contact: 9/9, 2B: 20, SS: 17)

In the 12th round I selected Ira Daniels another MR with some decent talent.

Drafted RP Ira Daniels in the 2029 expansion draft (Round 12, Pick 3, 47th overall pick).

Daniels is a 4* rated pitcher who pitched in 37 games last season with the Surf Dawgs. He has a tendency to give up the long-ball and will be in the middle of the bullpen (15/15, 9/9, 12/12)

Drafted SS Vincent Harrison in the 2029 expansion draft (Round 13, Pick 2, 50th overall pick).

Harrison isn't all that excited about joining the Cannons, but he will be a starter. He has spent time as a starter for the Cardinals and the Express in the past, so he knows what he is doing. He will compete for the job at 1B, 2B or SS (10/10, 10/10, 9/9, 4/4, 8/8)

The next two players I have some experience with. One with the Sixteens and one with the Cavaliers.
Drafted RP Leo Hampton in the 2029 expansion draft (Round 14, Pick 3, 55th overall pick).
Drafted 2B Miguel Ramírez in the 2029 expansion draft (Round 15, Pick 2, 58th overall pick).

I am happy to have Hampton back on the team, and he will be back in a role he was successful in 2 seasons ago as the closer, at least he is the favorite for the closer as of now (10/10, 11/11, 15/15). Ramirez was the Cavaliers 2nd round pick in 2024, but ended up being rule-5 in 2027 by the Barons. After some up and down season with the Barons, we will look for Ramirez to be the everyday 2B, or possible the DH. I think he could end up being one of our top hitters (10/10, 10/10, 8/8, 7/7, 12/12).

After 15 rounds it dawned on me (finally) that I need to get a catcher. Someone who can play defense and keep baserunners from advancing easily. So I went crazy and with the next two picks drafted Catchers.

Drafted C Jack Cavazos in the 2029 expansion draft (Round 16, Pick 3, 63rd overall pick).
Drafted C José Pérez in the 2029 expansion draft (Round 17, Pick 2, 66th overall pick).

Cavazos is the front-runner to be the starter and he has spent some time up in the bigs with the Iron Pigs and the Express. He has shown some pop with the bat (7/7, 10/10, 12/12, 8/8, 6/7), and is only medicore as a defender (Ability: 10, Arm: 10, C: 10). Perez will be his back-up. Perez is a little bit better of a defender (Ability: 11, Arm: 12, C: 10), is a career 1-26 in the bigs (7/7, 9/9, 9/9, 8/8, 9/9) but he is fast so that is a positive (Speed: 15, Stealing: 19, Basrunning: 19).

The next two picks were picked to give us some depth in the outfield. They both should make the opening day roster and play more than 2 positions.

Drafted CF Pablo Maldonado in the 2029 expansion draft (Round 18, Pick 3, 71st overall pick).
Drafted CF Félix Olivas in the 2029 expansion draft (Round 19, Pick 2, 74th overall pick).

Maldonado is a solid outfielder, at all 3 slots, and can play the corner IF positions. He is fast (Speed: 16, Stealing: 20, Baserunning: 20), but the question is will he get on base (8/8, 9/9, 1/1, 3/3, 13/13). Olivas is another fast guy (Speed: 14, Stealing: 20, Baserunning: 20) who can play all the IF positions and CF way above average, again the question with him is will he produce at the plate (8/8, 16/16, 5/5, 5/5, 14/14).

The next 3 picks are familiar faces with the Sixteens. Two relievers from last year and the year before and my inherited SS which I traded away during my first year.

Drafted RP Anthony Payne in the 2029 expansion draft (Round 20, Pick 3, 79th overall pick).
Drafted RP Alfonso Hernández in the 2029 expansion draft (Round 21, Pick 2, 82nd overall pick).
Drafted 2B Nelson Barrera in the 2029 expansion draft (Round 22, Pick 3, 87th overall pick).

Payne gives us bullpen depth (11/11, 12/12, 11/12) and gets grounders. Hernandez was a disappointment in Georgetown, since I did expect more from him, but he will get another shot to impress me here in Chadds Ford. Another groundball pitcher with decent stuff (12/12, 11/11, 11/12). Berrer is a gold glove caliber 2B, SS and 3B, but he can't really hit. He has struggled in the bigs with his bat despite being a can't miss prospect back in the day. If he can hit the ball he will play, his defense is that good (9/9, 10/10, 3/3, 2/2, 13/13).

The next 3 picks were just for depth. I looked for the best rated players left that had the ratings I was interested in. Control. Defense. Baserunning.

Drafted CF Félix Robles in the 2029 expansion draft (Round 23, Pick 2, 90th overall pick).
Drafted RF Melvin van der Kamp in the 2029 expansion draft (Round 24, Pick 3, 95th overall pick).
Drafted RP Alfredo Mejía in the 2029 expansion draft (Round 25, Pick 2, 98th overall pick).

Robles will probably get a look with the big club but could start the season in AAA. He is a solider OF at all 3 slots, can steal a base, but we aren't sure about his bat (8/8, 9/9, 2/2, 1/1, 9/9). Melvin has decent speed and can play a solid RF. He is limited to RF, but has some slight ratings at 4 others positions. He stole 21 bases during a season in the minors and I hope he can do something like that again (7/7, 10/10, 7/7, 8/8, 8/8).

This pick was a surprise. I thought I knew the name and after doing some research on him I did. He spent time in the Cavaliers bullpen with me for seasons.

Drafted RP Alberto Sánchez in the 2029 expansion draft (Round 26, Pick 3, 103rd overall pick).

Sanchez isn't overly excited to be reunited with me since I traded him away. But I needed pitching depth and he has it to offer (13/13, 9/9, 15/15). One reason I need a good infield is I concentrated on getting ground ball pitchers and Sanchez is yet another one. At 30-years-old he is currently the oldest player on the 40-man roster. Mejia will be my #3 or #4. He has pitched in 39 games in the DBL as a reliever, but spent most of his minor league career as a starter (10/10, 13/13, 11/11).

Contrears was taken based on his ratings as the draft started to get pretty think in the 27th round.

Drafted RP Arturo Contreras in the 2029 expansion draft (Round 27, Pick 2, 106th overall pick).

Arturo is a 1* pitcher who has questionable stamina for a starter, but he does have the ratings otherwise to make the rotation (10/10, 11/11, 11/11) with 4 average pitches.

The last 7 picks were drafted for depth and it is uncertain any of them will make the opening day roster.

Drafted CF Nicholas Lee in the 2029 expansion draft (Round 28, Pick 3, 111st overall pick).
Drafted RP Jorge Quiñones in the 2029 expansion draft (Round 29, Pick 2, 114th overall pick).
Drafted CF Terry Yates in the 2029 expansion draft (Round 30, Pick 3, 119th overall pick).
Drafted RP Jesús Salazar in the 2029 expansion draft (Round 31, Pick 2, 122nd overall pick).
Drafted SP Warren Johnston in the 2029 expansion draft (Round 32, Pick 3, 127th overall pick).
Drafted SS Leonardo Herrera in the 2029 expansion draft (Round 33, Pick 2, 130th overall pick).
Drafted RP Shaban Hyseni in the 2029 expansion draft (Round 34, Pick 3, 135th overall pick).
Drafted SS Tim Bannatyne in the 2029 expansion draft (Round 35, Pick 2, 138th overall pick).

Of this group Lee probably had the best chance, but he is still on the DL for another 4 months with a torn ACL. If he was healthy I am guessing he would of gone a little earlier (8/8, 9/9, 8/8, 6/6, 13/14).

Quinonez flyball pitcher with great control (9/9, 9/9, 15/15) will compete for a roster slot.

Yates is a solid defender in CF and RF with great speed (Speed: 16, Stealing: 20, Baserunning: 16) and a questionable bat. he will be fighting for the final roster slot (7/7, 11/11, 7/7, 7/7, 7/8).

Salazar will get touched up for way too many long-balls due to his lack of movement, but his stamina could give him a shot at the #5 slot in the rotation (12/12, 6/6, 12/12). I had a pitcher named Vaughan Griffith who was successful with a low movement rating, so maybe I will luck out with Jesus. Granted 8 vs 6 is a pretty big difference.

Johnson was taken because of his control rating best on the board, but he will start the season in AAA. However we could see him in the bigs since he will eat innings (9/9, 8/8, 10/12).

Herrera is a solid middle-IF, and is still developing (some). He has no speed an a "who knows" bat. The 23 year old will be down on the farm to start the season (7/8, 9/9, 5/5, 8/11, 5/6)

Hyseni has a lot of stamina and had the best pitching ratings on the board. He has never pitched above AAA and I don't see that changing this season (13/13, 10/10, 9/9), however he could make for a nice long man out of the pen.

Bannatyne plays 6 positions and has above average speed. He has spent the last 4 seasons bouncing up and down between AAA and the Bluejays. He isn't a hitter, but his speed and defense will get him a chance at the 25th man on the roster (7/7, 9/9, 5/5, 10/11, 9/9).

Well there you have it the start of something special I hope, well at least its a start. I will have more about our roster throughout the off-season but now I need to go see what is out on their that I can afford on the free-agent market. Overall I am pleased with how I did in this draft, and I am happy to see some familiar faces...

I was out of town the past few days, but I'm glad you decided to move on. Good luck in Chadds Ford, I'm looking forward to see how you do with the expansion team, and Chadds Ford is right down the road!

Thanks. I am ready to get the season started, but at the same time I want to see if there is anything I can do over the next few months to make this team better. I have a feeling its going to be a long first year.

5. Virginia Beach Surf Dawgs: -4.7

Firings, Extenions, Trades and other tid-bits:
Annapolis Admirals: Acquired LF Manuel Diaz (.248/.320/.357, 7 HR) from the Lewes Braves for 2B Francisco Perez (.256/.315/.389, 14 HR) and SS Juan Morales (A).

New Castle Colonials: Traded 1B John Houghton (.317/.402/.372, HR) to the Wilmington Iron Pigs for RP Mike Hanson (3-8 4.15, 4 SV) and SP Matt Jefferson (A).

Free Agents Signings:
Lewes Braves: Days after opening up a new bar in New Castle, SP Pablo Garcia signed a 2 year $33,000,000 dollar deal with the Braves. Garcia one of the games top lefties went 15-7 2.68 last season.

Dover Generals: Signed RP Marcos Estrada to a 1 year deal worth $990,000. The all-time strikeout leader didn't pitch in 2029. He will be 42 on opening day.

Chesapeake Blue Crabs: C Jose Perales signed a 4 year / $56,400,000 deal.

Annapolis Admirals: Signed SP Robin Fenton to a 1-year deal worth $900,000

Annapolis Admirals: Signed OF Xue-Qin Xu to a 2 year, $6,480,000. The one time all-star has struggled of late, but the Admirals hope for a bounce back from his -0.3 WAR 2029.

New Castle Colonials: Signed LF Jordan Bishop to a 1 year deal worth $1,1800,000.

Milford Clippers: Signed SP Claudio Perez to a 2 year deal worth $29,200,000. The righty went 9-8 3.06 with the Generals last season.

Milton Brewers: Made a big splash signing all-star catcher Will Riley to a 2 year deal worth $35,200,000. Riley hit .299-29-88 for the Admirals last season.

New Castle Colonials: Signed SS Steven Jefferson to a 4 year deal worth $67,400,000. For the second season in a row the Virginia Beach Surf Dawgs lost their starting SS.

Georgetown Sixteens: Signed OF/1B Felipe Herrera to a 3 year $12,360,000 deal. Last year Herrera hit .237-39-108 with the Ports. The addition gives the Sixteens much needed pop in the middle of the lineup.

Lewes Braves: Beefed up their starting rotation by signing SP Narcissus Kondylis to a 6 year $73,200,000 deal. Kondylis is the only pitcher in DBL history to throw 2 no-hitters in the same season. He went 14-10 4.04 last season setting a career high in wins.

Budget: $65,000,000 t22nd
Payroll: $25,240,000 24th

Money for Free-Agents: NONE

Owner Profile
Name: Ralph Corbin
Age: 60 (12/07/1968)

Ralph Corbin was born in Dallas Texas and come to the DelMarVa area over the past 10 seasons and with the boom of the DBL he began to show interest in ownership. When he heard about the upcoming expansion he applied for a team to be based out of Chadds Ford PA, becoming the first team from PA to join the DBL. Coming from oil money Corbin had enough money to tip scales his way and was able to get approval for his team, the Chadds Ford Cannons. Corbin just wants to make a dollar and his sole purpose for owning a team is to make money. In the application Corbin said he chose Chadds Ford because of the history involing the Revolutionary War. An avid history buff, the Cannons decided to base their away uniforms on the uniforms of the American forces during the war.

Current Mode: Happy
Patience: Demanding
Fiscal Personality: Penny-pincher
Involment: Hands-off
Priority: Extreme Profit

Front Office:
Upon my arrival most of the coaching staff was filled out. Missing only 3 coaches from the system I reached out and began to try to fill the holes. First move was to promote the current Manager to GM. With the unproven Bob Rodgers out of the way, I reached out to, Guilherme Guardio, in effors to fill the vacant managerial slot. He is a lengendary coach who has a 1321-1271 career record in the DBL. I also reached out to Anthony Baker to manager our single-A club and Ronald Johnson to manage our short-season A club. Both of those coaches are unproven.

MGR Guilherme Guardio signed a 3-year contract worht $786,000 per season to run the helm. He is coming off a 5-year tenure with the Milton Brewers, where he guided a young team to 3 play-off showings.

PC Ronald Johnson signed on to be our short-season a-ball manager. He hasn't coached since his 2-season as the pitching coach for the Virginia Beach Surf Dawgs in 2017 and 2018. He will make $148,000 per year for 2 seasons.

MGR Anthony Baker agreed to take over our A-Ball club. He has been managing in the minors since 2013 with mixed success. But he was, what I thought, was the best player out there for this team.

Players:
I started the off-season by reaching out to anyone who has talent and was young enough to make the team. I do have a few qualifications, they must have some skill with the possibility of making the club and putting up some kind of numbers or at least be fast, avoid K's and play good defense.

Offers:
November 11th
I reached out to Sergio Galvez, yes here I go again, and offered him a 3-year deal worth just over $4 million per season. I doubt he will sign here, but its worht the try. I also reached out to Javier Janchez, yes the wrecked player, who is pretty solid when on the field, a plus defender and plus runner. He said no way he would play for our new manager Guardio. Their paths crossed in Christiana, so I am out there.

November 13th
After the expansion draft I reached out to a couple of pitchers. I do need to add some depth in the rotation. I offered a 2 year/$5 million contract to SP Esteban Calamacho, second year vesting on 110 IP. And I also reached out to injured SP Yoshtoki Mori, who was with the Sixteens, and offered him a 3 year deal. I am starting to think I should withdrawl this deal as I am not sure his stamina is going to hold out as a starter.

Singings:
November 17th
Made some minor league offers to C Fernando Diaz, who could fight for the #2 or #3 catcher slot. 2B Bryant Bingaman who is a below average hitter, but a solid 2B. 3B Eugene Carlisle for minor league depth, another below average hitter with a solid glove. SP Caul Oulton, who is an average rated pitcher with a lot of stamina, guess I am just hoping he surprises.

November 26th
A few days later we signed another 3 minor league players. CF Jorge Guerrero who can fly and can cover 1/2 the outfield on his own, but really struggles with the bat. OF Pedro Ortiz, who is another fast guy with great OF range and questionable bat. And OF Chance Boone, who is a guy I drafted while in Norfolk and the Cav's seemed to have given pu on. He is a solid OF with, yes a quesitonable bat.

November 29th
We came to terms with Esteban Calamacho on a two year deal worth $2,500,000 per season. The second year of this deal is a vesting option based on 110 IP. Calamacho went 6-13 4.33 with the Richmond Cardinals last season and is 22-47 lifetime over 3 seasons with the Cardinals. Calamacho will be our #3.

November 30th
Yoshtoki Mori signed our 3yr deal. A deal that could end up being worth $10,100,000. His first year he will make $1,700,000 and in year two $3,200,000 and if he reaches 110 IP he can bring home $5,200,00 during his third season. He will be placed on the DL and should be back in 5-6 months, or mid-season. He has solid ratings for Stuff (14), Movement (10) and Control (15), but only a 7 in stamina, which I have to keep a close eye on. He could end up being my closer.

We came to terms with 4 more guys for our minor league system. C Dan Bank is a catcher who could win a gold glove, but he can't really hit. I just wanted a defensive catcher. 1B/C Anzhel Astsatrian has shown some power (12/13) so he could end up being a valubable bat, he has never played over AA however. C Paco Santos again defensive depth, matches Bank as a defender, but probably a little better hitter. And finally, yet another catcher, Il-Young Cho. Cho is a free-agent out of Korea and a 1/2 decent catcher. He may compete for an opening day roster slot (7/7, 10/10, 12/12, 10/10, 7/7).

OF/1B Sergio Galvez favors our offer so we are still on the fence. Galvez still has some umph so I am hoping he can signs with us. He will most likely be our starting 1B, possible LF'er.

Hall of Fame:
Hall of Fame voting is on its way and it will be interesting to see if we will have our first member. Last year no one was really close, but this season there are a couple of new comers on the ballot that have a legit shot.

My Ballot:
CL Wilson Acosta - 59-57 3.06, 286 SV, 8-time All-Star, 1st year on Ballot
LF Glenn Jenkins - .329-138-618, 48.5 WAR, 8-time All-Star, 1-time MVP. 2nd year (24.3)
CF Stan Miller - .277-341-1016, 63.3 WAR, 6-time All-Star, 1 Gold Glove, 1 MVP. 1st year
RF Bill Moore - .277-354-982, 31.0 WAR, 6-time All-Star, 2nd year (21.7)

CL Dalton Whitaker - 53-59 3.75, 343 SV, 1027 K's, 8.2 WAR. 7-time All-Star, 1st year

Firings, Extensions, Trades and other tid-bits:
Milton Brewers: The Brewers owner Jamie Bido died. The cause of the death wasn't released, but it is known that his son Jamie Bido Jr. will be taking over the helms.

Milton Brewers: Know a good thing when they see it, and they proved this by signing SP Julio Rocha to a 6 year extension worth $22,700,000 per year. Rocha is 29 and is 120-51 lifetime in the DBL.

Norfolk Cavaliers: Signed closer Miguel Angel Gonzalez to a 3-year extension worth $30,000,000. Gonzalez saved a career high 46 last season.

Norfolk Cavaliers: Extended MR Eric Helton for 2 years. The deal will pay Helton $8,480,000.

Ellicott City Express: Traded away prospects SS Jaak Groenendijk (A, #184) and SS Mario Arredondo for 3B Al Lindsay (.224/.299/.340, 10 HR).

Georgetown Sixteens: Acquired RP Adrian Padgett (3-2 4.16, 2 SV) and $980,000 from the Washington Senators for prospects LF Jack Johnson and 3B Roberto Olivo.

Newark Millers: Acquired C Aaron Brathwait (.288/.329/.40, 5 HR) from the Lewes Braves for 1B Mathew Robison (.271/.316/.538, 39 HR) and C Marvin Riley (SA).

Baltimore Barons: Received C Fernando Mendoza (.269/.320/.348, HR) in exchange for 2B Brian Weaver (.200/.302/.289, HR) and prospect SP Henry Ward (S, #68).

Milton Brewers: Sent prospects LF Grant Weaver (AA, #155) and SP Jose Serrano (A) to the Washington Senators for 2B Markus Palmer (.301/.330/.409, HR).

Free Agents Signings:
Baltimore Barons: Signed 2B Luis Mota to a 1-year deal worth $2,200,000

Lewes Braves: Resigned Errol Williams to a 2-year deal worth $28,00,000. Williams hit .253-21-83 last season for the Braves. Williams returns to Lewes after 1-season in Newark.

Annapolis Admirals: Agreed to terms with CF Felipe Marquez on a 1-year deal worth $420,000.

King George Royals: Signed SP Steve Carter to a 1-year deal worth $620,000.

Lewes Braves: Signed their second IF of the week Bryant Frank to a 3 year deal worth $25,000,000.

Ocean City Tourists: Agreed to terms with ace Brad Jones. Jones went 16-11 3.83 last season for the Millers. The deal is worth a rumor 2 years and $21,200,000.

Lewes Braves: The Braves are stacking up on infielders and this may be the biggest one yet. They announced a deal with 5-time MVP Claude Bond on a 2 year deal worth $41,200,000.

Baltimore Barons: Agreed to 1-year deals with both 3B Cisco Benetiz and 3B Colin Thompson. Both deals are worth $1,340,000.

Dover Generals: Signed SP Raul Tejada to a 1-year deal worth $810,000.

Richmond Cardinals: Signed SP Greg Schmidt to a 3 year deal worth $5,300,000 per year. Schmidt hopes to bounce back from his 6-13 season last year with the Braves.

Newark Millers: Signed All-Star 1B Alonso Martinez to a 2 year deal worth 10,200,000. Martinez hit .296-24-79 for the Iron Pigs last season.

New Castle Colonials: Agreed to terms with Sergio Galvez on a 3-year deal worth $14,480,000. Galvez hit .252-8-41 in limited time with the Cavaliers last season. He is one of the only (I think 3) 30-30 men in DBL History.

Ocean City Tourists: Signed MR Alec Haney to a 3 year deal worth $10,920,000. Haney pitched in a career high 48 games last season as a 31-year old.

Team Summary
Budget: $65,000,000 t22nd
Payroll: $25,240,000 24th
Money for Free-Agents: NONE (confused by this)
Fan Interest: 100
Owners Mode: Happy

Rule-5 Draft:
With the third pick in the Rule-5 Draft we selected Dan Kessler from the Norfolk Cavaliers organization. I feel like this selection is quite the steal and I am really surprsied he didn't get drafted #1 or #2 (no pick). Kessler throws low 90's and has great ratings. He could end up being the closer this season. Kessler: Stuff 12/15, Movement: 14/14, Control: 12/13, Groundball Tendency.

Offers:
December 2nd
Sergio Gavlez decided that he wanted more money and the Milton Braves weren't shy with their offer. With our lack of budget we were out of the Galvez race. In the need of a veteran somewhere, we made Woody Brown an offer. Three 3 years and just of 3M a year.

Signings:
December 14th
Signed minor league pitcher Juan Jose Gonzalez. Gonzalez had the best ratings for any minor league pitcher and was signed for depth.

GM Notes:
I still have that offer hanging out there to Woody Brown, but I am not sure I like it anymore. I am close to pulling the plug and moving on. Do I need an old Vet with Power who is going to get hurt? I could spend that little bit of money on someone else or just hold on to it. I don't know still thinking.

With just under 2 months till our first spring training game things are getting crazy in Chadds Ford. The fans are ready, the team of young guys is ready... going to be a fun and interesting season to say the least. I tried to build this team on a) pitching and pitchers that get groudn balls. b) players with speed and a high avoid K's rating. and c) players who play 15+ defense. I don't think we will win it all, or come close for that matter in 2030. My goal is to win 70 games and I really think I have a team that could do that.

Ralph Corbin is a tough owner when it comes to letting go of funds. I will have to get used to his penny pinching ways and build from within with young guys. There is just no way I will be able to compete for the "A" level free-agents with a $30M payroll. Time to get creative.

As far as roster space I am pretty much full, at least that is what the money is telling me. So the next month I will be looking over my team and evaluating them and trying to put together a lineup and pitching staff that can accomplish my goal for 2030.

Coming Up:
01/08/2030- Hall of Fame Results
01/26/2030 - Preseason Begins
02/25/2030 - Spring Training Begins
04/01/2030 - Opening Day!!

Hall of Fame Voting Results 2030

Hall of Fame Voting Results:
The ballots are counted and the results are in. Unfortunately, no player was elected to the Hall of Fame this year. The top vote getter was Stan Miller, who received votes from 73.2% of eligible electors.

The full voting results are included here. Players require 75% of ballots cast to be elected to the Hall, may stay on the ballot for up to 10 years if they receive at least 5% of the votes. Players must be retired for 5 years before they are eligible for induction to the Hall of Fame.

CF Stan Miller 73.2 (1st year)
CL Dalton Whitaker 61.0 (1st year)
CL Wilson Acosta 48.5 (1st year)
SP Don Sweetapple 39.3 (2nd year)
LF Glenn Jenkins 39.0 (2nd year)
RF Billy Moore 32.9 (2nd year)
RF Steve Williams 22.7 (2nd year)
SP Jarred Perry 20.3 (2nd year)
C Vince Moy 15.6 (1st year)
CF Alberto Trujillo 6.8 (2nd year)
SP Anthony Dundee 5.4 (2nd year)
RF Pete MacCammon 5.1 (2nd year)
SS Jorge Gutiérrez 3.4 (1st year) Dropped
SP Rod Cantrell 3.1 (2nd year) Dropped
CL Bill Fox 2.7 (2nd year) Dropped
C Gustavo Feliciano 2.4 (2nd year) Dropped
LF Alonso Reyna 2.0 (1st year) Dropped
RF Grant Wright 1.7 (2nd year) Dropped
C Jake Judkins 1.0 (2nd year) Dropped
2B George Waller 0.3 (1st year) Dropped

I may have to tinker with the HoF settings, since the voting doesn't take into consideration the "newness" of the league. Where players like Sweetapple or Miller would of put up bigger numbers if the league started when they were younger. Or maybe I just leave it... I am quite shocked that Dalton Whitaker only got 61% of the votes. He was the first pitcher to 350 saves, the only pitcher above 300 for quite a while and he struck out a ton of hitters. Relief pitches never seem to get the respect they deserve, as I think he had at least one season where he should of won the Golden Arm (Cy Young)... For now the Hall remains empty, but my guess not for much longer...

none.

Signings:

January 2nd
1B Woody Brown agreed on a 3-year deal with us and he will be a welcome addition to the lineup. I am nervous about his "fragile" rating, but if he is healthy he could give us some big production. 3 yr deal / $3,200,000 per year, 3rd year option based on 250 PA. Contact: 10/10, Gap: 9/10, HR: 14/14, Eye: 8/9, K's: 7/7

GM Notes:
Not much to report on this month. We are about to head into spring training with a lot of battles going on. The big one is for the top 5-slots in the rotation. Here is a quick look at our 6 pitches heading for the 5-slots.

Angel Rivera: 11/15/12 - Rivera was a full-time starter for the Cavaliers in 2027 and went 8-7 3.61 in 29 starts. He has spent the past 2-seasons working out of the bullpen and looks forward to heading back to the rotation. Highlights: Extreme Groundball Pitcher and during his 2027 season as a starter he held his opponents to a league best .232 BABIP. With my goal of having a gold glove defense he should be able to get us a few wins. I look forward to seeing Rivera pitch again.

Esteban Calamacho: 10/12/14 - Calamacho pitched the past 3 seasons with the Richmond Cardinals and last year he set a person best with a 4.33 ERA, but he only had a 6-13 record. I am not sure what to expect from Calamacho, but I am guessing something similiar from his past will be most likley what I will get. He is 22-47 in 97 big-league games, 92 starts, over the past 3 seasons.

Lazzaro Tadiotto: 12/12/14 - Lazzaro has bounced around between AAA and AA over the past 4 seasons and he is ready to prove he should of been up full-time already. He hasn't appreard in a big-league game since 16 relief appearances in 2028 when he posted a 4.68 ERA. He did start 5 games for Norfolk in 2027 and went 1-4 4.62, but he has grown quite a bit since then. He is another Groundball pitcher who should benefit from a solid IF.

Alfredo Mejia: 10/13/11 - Mejia is a borderline big-leaguer. Last season with the Newark Millers he went 2-1 3.76 in 21 games. He did, however, start 26 games for the Millers in 2027, going 7-12 4.42. He seems to have developed much better control over the past few years and that should benefit him with the Cannons.

Jesus Salazar: 10/6/12 - Jesus split time between AAA (37 games) and the Blue Crabs (9 games) last season. Those 9 games are his only big league experience. For the Blue Crabs he pitched 14.2 innings, and posted a 4.30 ERA. He is a flyball pitcher with a lack of movement, so it could get really interesting when Salazar is on the hill.

Arturo Contreras: 10/11/11 - Arturo has the best pitch mixture to be a starter out of the remaining crop of pitches. But he does have very little experience in the DBL. Last season he made his debut with the Blue Crabs, posting a 5.87 ERA over 7.2 innings. In AAA he went 5-7 6.85 in 19 starts.

Overall our starters aren't very deep. Our bullpen is in much better shape and we could see some bullpen guys such as Alberto Sanchez, Leo Hampton and Ira Daniels make some starts. I could even try to pull off a trade, but with not much to work with I may just try to stick this year out by being quiet.

I am not sure why our owner is being so stingy. We have a $65M budget, and only a $25M payroll, but he said that is it. I would like to reach out to one or two players but Mr Corbin isn't letting me... which means we are going into this season with what we have and that ain't much! His goal for us in 2030 is "Don't suck completely" and I really hope we can do that. I think we aren't that bad, but that being said I could be WAY off...

Spring Training Report (1 of 2) - March 1, 2030

WAR GAINED:
1. Lewes Braves: 19.0
2. Georgetown Sixteens: 5.9
3. Salisbury Ports: 4.5
4. Balitmore Barons: 4.0
5. Milton Brewers: 3.0

WAR LOSS:
1. Newark Millers: -9.3
2. Wilmington Iron Pigs: -6.9
3. Norfolk Cavaliers: -4.6
4. Chadds Ford Cannons: -4.2
5. Chesapeake Blue Crabs: -3.7

Firings, Extensions, Trades and other tid-bits:
The initial pre-season predictions are in and from the looks of it it could end up being an exciting year. In the Southern Division the Sixteens and the Braves are predicted to be fighting it out both winning over 100 games... In the Northern the Colonials are the front runners, but the Clippers are too far behind... Over in the MarVa Conference it looks to be the same-ole-same-ole with the Surf Dawgs and the Cavaliers the early favorites, both winning over 100 games...

As far as the hitter and pitches predictions it looks like 2030 will be a hitters season. With 2 players predicted to hit over 50 HR's and 10 others over 40... There is only 1 pitches predicted to win 20 or more games and that is Norfolks Paul Brown. Brown won 21 last season and is predicted to win 20 more this year.

Free Agents Signings:
Newark Millers: Signed free-agent P Anastasio Ramirez to a 3-year deal worth $7,680,000.

Milford Clippers:
Signed SP Steve Cole to a 3 year deal worth $12,840,000.

Ellicott City Express: Signed SP Jacob Holder to a 2 year deal worth $9,280,000.

A few other minor signings, but no one really of note...

Budget: $65,000,000 t22nd
Payroll: $25,010,000 24th
Money for Free-Agents: $4,840,000
Fan Interest: 100
Owners Mode: Happy

Its predicted we will only sell 13,900 season tickets this year. I'd like to see that be higher especially in our first season...

Spring Training:
Well the preseason predictions are in and we are rated the top expansion team and I have to say I am not liking our "predicted" record... The experts have us coming in with 60 wins an 102 losses (Cape May: 41-121, King George: 57-105, and Martinsburg: 56-106). Like I have said I really want to win 70 games this season, but it might be harder than first thought.

Just for comparision here are the final records of the 2017 expansion clubs:
Christiana: 57-105, Salisbury: 49-113, Seaford: 62-100, Virginia Beach: 55-107

The first game in Chadds Ford Cannons history was a 3-2 loss to the Blue Hens. The Cannons used 19 position players, collecing 9 hits with Tony Iman leading the way going 2-2 with a solo-HR. Enrique Maldonado also added a HR, going 1-1. Angel Rivera with 4 innings allowing 5 hits and 3 runs. He was followed by 9 other pitches, Alberto Hernandez and Juan Fernandez both wetn 2 hit-less innings.

Game 2 of the spring was the first 'W' in Cannons history. With Ernesto Calamacho going 4 innings allowing just 3 hits. He did walk 4 however. Matt Noble and Dan Kessler both went 2 innings allowing 1 hit each. Kessler and Noble are the Cannons #1 and #2 prospects.

We ended the mont going 1-3, which is ok, its spring and it feels good to get some games under our belt. We are young and inexperienced... that W was nice.

Offers:
February 1st
I reached out Dan Foley a catcher with semi-decent ratings and a better glove than what I currently have. He was looking for a big league offer, I offered a minor league deal... He wasn't happy with that and ended up signing with the Milford Clippers 8 days later.

February 8th
I reached out to what I thought was the top lefty left on the board and offered Michael Heathcote a minor-leage deal with a major-league option. The one reason I like Heathcote is he is a lefty and right now we dont have a viable lefty that is DBL ready.

February 28th
We reached out OF Francisco Reyes and offered him a minor league deal with a $1.2M option if he makes the club. He isn't nearly the player he once was and it might be a mistake, but having a HoF'er on the team and a veteran leader.

Sigings:
February 9th
Michael Heathcote signed a 1-year deal worth $1,078,000, assuming he is active and on the 40-man roster come opening day. Last year he pitched in 20 games with the Newark Millers going 2-1 5.70 with 3 saves. He is an average rated pitcher who has been deemed a work horse. I like that he is a lefty and he will be given a chance to make the big league roster.

GM Notes:
Last month we looked at the starters, this month we will take a quick look at the relievers. We have 12 in the bullpen for spring with only 6 coming with us when we head back to Chadds Ford. The roster will have 5 starters, 6 relievers and 14 posistion players...

The bullpen is probably our strongest feature, that and maybe team speed.

Battling for the slots:
Dan Kessler (12/15/11)
Ira Daniles (15/9/11)
*Juan Fernandez (12/12/11)
Leo Hampton (10/11/15)
*Alfonso Hernandez (12/11/12)
*Alberto Sanchez (12/9/15)
Matt Noble (11/11/13)
*Anthony Payne (11/12/11)
Michael Heathcote (10/10/11, L)

Long Shots:
*Jorge Quinones (8/9/15, L)
Aaron Henderson (11/9/8)
Arturo Contreras (10/11/11)

Quinones and Heathcote will battle it out of the lefty role. Quinones is out of options... Contreras is a long shot, but will have a shot as a starter and reliever... In all honesty I'd like to keep 9 of these guys on the roster, but I just don't see that happening...

I will have an issue figuring out which ones to keep and it is possible I go with 7 in the pen and only 13 position players. We have 5 that don't have options so I do have some flexibility, and I will use spring performance to judge these guys...

Leo Hampton is the current front runner for the closer role. Hampton doens't walk many people and 2 seasons ago did a solid job for me as the closer in Georgetown... My other idea is to throw Dan Kessler in the closer role, he may be the best qualified. He did save 34 games last season in AA and AAA.

The offense...
Right now there are 18 position players in spring training, and they are fighting for 13 or 14 slots. Two of them are already taken by the Catchers Jack Cavazos (7/10/12/8/7, S) and Jose Perez (7/9/9/8/9, S). So that leaves the other 16 players fighting for 11 slots.

My goal was to get guys who could run the bases, and of these 16 players 9 have a steal rating of 20 and 2 more have one of 19. I want to be able to make stuff happen on the base paths, since the long-ball isn't going to be something we can rely on.

The outfield should be interesting with only 1 player having 10 contact (out of 20), 1 with 9, 2 with 8 and 3 with 7.
(Contact / Gap / Power / Eye / Avoid K's)

Vance Burns (10/9/10/7/14)
Martin Adams (7/9/9/9/8)
Melvin van der Kamp (7/10/7/8/8)
Pablo Maldanado (9/9/1/3/13, S)
Felix Olivas (8/16/5/5/14, L)
Jamie Villarreal (8/10/4/6/10)
Terry Yates (7/1/7/7/7)

The Spring starters are Villareal, Adams and Burns. Olivas is set as the back-up CF and back-up 1B. He is also the only lefty of the bunch. Villareal is the only hitting decently during spring so far going 5-12 with 4 steals.

I will pay some more attention to these guys and make sure the sub's get more AB's. I am curious how players like Pablo will hit. I know he can run, but I need him on base too...

Felix Olivas is probably the only player in the bunch who is listed on the opening day roster, right now. He really is a sure thing not only is he one of the better hitters of the OF's he is able to play 1B, 2B, 3B, SS and CF above average. Me and manager Guiherme Guardio will make good use out of that.

If we broke today Villareal would be in left, Burns in right and Olivas in CF...

Spring Training Report (2 of 2) - March 31, 2030

Spring Division Winners:
Southern: Georgetown Sixteens: 19-9 (+1)
Northern: Newark Millers: 18-10 (+4)
Eastern: Annapolis Admirals: 19-9 (+4)
Western: Ellicott City Express: 20-8 (+2)

Leaders:
Avg: Thomas Reynolds, Surf Dawgs, .467
HR: Alfonso Sierra, Express, 12
RBI: Alfonso Sierra, Express, 24

ERA: Stan Burns, Colonials, 0.45
K's: Ricardo Gonzalez, Sixteens, 35
W's: Warner Kiel, Ports, 5

Preseason predictions:
These changed quite a bit over the month of games...
Southern Division: In the begging it was the Braves and Sixteens fighting it out, but a month later the Brewers are predicted to take home the title beating out the Sixteens. Both winning over 100 games, however.

Northern Division: The Colonials have clippers have climbed the ladder and look to be the favorite. Holding off the Millers by 5 games.

Eastern Division: The Admirals and Barons jumped the Surf Dawgs, as the Surf Dawgs, once thought to be 100 games winners, seem to be a 3rd place team. The rebuilding Admirals and Barons have showed off their stuff. This might be the most fun division of 2030.

Western Division: The Cavaliers are still the favorite by many games winning a predicted 117 of them.

More to come in the next post...

Firings, Extensions, Trades and other tid-bits:
Salisbury Ports: Acquired catcher John Herbert from the Georgetown Sixteens, along with $1.3M cash, for prospect Catcher Juan Romero (SA, #134) and MR Rafael Ferreira (AAA).

Cape May Beacons: Acquired catcher Mike Baldwin from the Norfolk Cavaliers for 3B Justin Collins and MR Cal Clouse.

NOTE: I have to say I am a little sad I didn't know that the Sixteens were up to trading Herbert. He would of been a great fit behind the plate. Plus he offers a lot of power. I think the Sixteens made a big mistake with this deal. I will keep an eye on Herbert's performance .

Injuries:
Georgetown Sixteens: MR Russ Dillion missed spring training with a rotator cuff sprain.

Martinsburg Mountaineers: Lost 2B Mario Vazquez for 6 months with a strained hip muscle.

Seaford Blue Jays:
Will be without 3B Hugo Holderlin for 6-7 weeks, the 2-3 weeks of the regular season with plantar fascitis.

New Castle Colonials: Lost LF Ryan Sutton for 2-3 weeks of the regular season with a torn hamstring. Sutton was out during the Colonials Conf Championship series last year and is a huge part of the offense when healthy.

Baltimore Barons: Lost RF Mike Smith for 9-months with a torn PCL.

Georgetown Sixteens: Will miss CF Randy Downey for 3 months after Downey ruptured a finger tendon.

Free Agents Signings:
Georgetown Sixteens:
Signed CL/MR Yoo-hyun Kim to a 3-year deal worth $14,880,000. This is a risky deal for a 35-year old reliever that has shown signs of breaking down.

Budget: $65,000,000 t22nd
Payroll: $30,660,000 23rd
Money for Free-Agents: $2,084,600
Fan Interest: 100
Owners Mode: Happy

Spring Training:
We finished the spring with 7 wins and 21 loses, but we did win 3 of our last 9, which I guess is something. As the roster dwindeled we played better, which hopefully will translate to the regular season.

Angel Rivera pitched well posting a 2.25 ERA and striking out 18 in 24 innings. Esteban Calamacho posted a 1.88 ERA over 24 innings. Lazzaro Tadiotto posted a 2.25 ERA in 24.0 innings... Those 3 will be counted on to perform this season. Hopefully this is a good sign...

Michael Heathcote will break camp on the roster after posting a 1.32 ERA over 13.2 IP. Better than I expected thats for sure... Rookie Dan Kessler won the closer role posting a 2.16 ERA in 8.1 innings. Might as well grow with him there right?

Offensively Francisco Reyes lead the team with a .311 average, only him and Woody Brown, .300, hit over 300 during spring. I am going to count on those 2 vet's to help out these young guys quite a bit.

Anzhel Astsatrian surprised everyone with his power beling 5 HR's and tying for the team lead, with Vance Burns, in RBI's with 9. CF Jamie Villareel lead the offense with 10 runs scored and 4 steals. However 3 of those steals came in the same game.

From the looks of it this team will strike out a lot, but that was to be expected. I just hope we can make the most of our base runners, they predict we will only score 3.2 runs per game!

Transactions:
March 18th
Waived and DFA's MR Jorge Quinones
Sent MR Aaron Henderson to AAA
Sent OF Martin Adams to AAA

Quinones isn't going to win the lefty-slot in the pen so I figured its time to make lower the roster to let the other guys battle. I don't think Q will be wanted by anyone so I feel safe waiving him.

Anderson isn't anything special and could use some seasoning down on the farm. He has no professional experience, so the decision was pretty easy.

Martin Adams was the favorite to win the starting CF job at the opening of spring, but he has just struggled. In 50 AB's he as collected 5 hits and struck out 17 times. He was 3-3 when it comes to steals. He needs some more time to get his swing in order. I sent him down to get some of the other guys some swings.

March 25th
Sent MR Arturo Contreras to AAA
Sent MR Matt Noble to AAA
Sent MR Ira Daniles to AAA

Contreras didn't even pitch during the spring. I am not sure why he was listed as the 6th started, but our manager decided to stick with 5.

I didn't really want to send Noble down, but I felt like I had to based on his options. He will be the first guy called up most likely and this will give a little more time to work on his 2nd and 3rd pitches.

I am surprised with how Daniels pitched this spring, but he earned him a slot in AAA. In 10.1 IP he gave up 14 hits and 15 runs. Yes he did strike out 14, but he is just getting hit way too much.

With that we are down to 12 pitchers and I think that is how we will break camp...

If we are carrying 12 pitchers that means we will have to move 5 more position players off the roster.

Sent OF Pablo Maldonado to AAA
Sent OF Terry Yates to AAA
Sent IF Enrquie Maldonado to AAA

P Maldonado is fast and can play a great OF, but he just can't hit. I need him to learn how to get on base to take advantage of his speed.

Yates had a chance to make the club, but he is the only other OF with options, so down he goes.

E Maldonado had an outside chance of making the team and I really wanted him after his hot start in spring. But he cooled off and is another "you have options" demotion.

March 27th
Traded IF Tim Bannatyne and MR Clark Perry to the Georgetown Sixteens for MR Hee-seop So.

Bannatyne was out of options and after his 3-30 spring I decided to part ways. Perry was a throw in, he doesn't seem to have a future at all in the bigs, so it made sense.. With So I get a 4/4.5* MR who gets grounders. You can't go wrong there. He had a decent year last season with me, and I am glad he is here, even if he isn't overly happy about it.

Heading into opening day I have a roster of 27 players and will need to make one more move. I am not sure what that move is yet, so for now we will carry 27. Looks like 1 pitcher and 1 position player will be moved.

Offers & Signings:
We fired our bench coach Jeremy Franklin, his ideals didn't match up with our team strategy. He was on a 1-year deal so it didn't hurt us much to see him go. We are waiting to hear back from Jorge Rosa if he wants the deal. He is personable person and loves small ball, seems to be right up our alley.

GM Notes:
1B Anzhel Astsatrain has been a pleasent surprsie. He doesn't offer much defense, but he does play catcher and this could mean that I won't need to carry Perez and Cavazos. Perez has struggled during spring so it seems like I might have some options.

I am not sure how this team will perform this year. We were the worst team during spring, just not getting any offense production. I will have to keep my eye on the trading block and waiver wire to see if I can find any "steals" out there.

I will also have to talk with the manager and hopefully convince him to steal as often as possible. Manufacturing runs is how we are going to score them... We just don't have an offense right now. We should be able to rely on the pitching staff, at least the bullpen and top 3 starts to keep games close. Just how are we going to get runs?

More to come when I break down the opening day roster, but right now we have what we have and I am not sure what that really means as far as this season. Can be respectable on the field? Its yet to be seen.

Career Ends for Peters

Career Ends for Peters: The prognosis was not good. Medical tests were performed. And now, as a result of a torn labrum, Peter Peters has made up his mind to retire from baseball. The Virginia Beach right fielder said he struggled with the decision. Ultimately, he said, "I had to do what's best for me and my family." A team spokesperson said that a formal announcement would be issued later today.

---
Peter Peters was the #1 pick in the inaugural draft in the DBL and was quickly named the top prospect at the age of 20. He played in 48 games that year and showed he was a future star. in 2014, he made his name known with the Silver Slugger award after hitting .359 with 40 HR's and 98 RBI's.

His career blossomed in New Castle, as he put up big numbers after big numbers leading the league in Runs, 2B's, HR's RBI's, Avg, WAR and walks at one time during his career. After playing in only 129 games due to an injury in 2023, there were talks he was done and going to spend most of the final years of his career on the DL. However Peters proved them wrong winning his final of 6 Silver Sluggers in 2024 hitting .272-36-112.

He finishes his career in a Virginia Beach uniform, but he will be forever known as the face of the New Castle Colonials franchise. He will be missed and in 5 years we will see his face on a plaque.

He left his mark on the DBL...

2030 Top 10 & Top Minor League Systems

Top 100 Prospects List Published: The season is about to start, so it's time to publish the annual Top 100 Prospects list. This year 22-year-old C Héctor Pagán of the Richmond Cardinals is the #1 prospect overall.

Here is the top 10:
1) C Héctor Pagán, 22, Richmond Cardinals
2) RHP Chris Brock, 22, Georgetown Sixteens
3) RHP Jason Lancaster, 23, Ellicott City Express
4) 1B Matt McNeill, 20, Chesapeake Blue Crabs
5) RHP Gabino Miller, 21, Seaford Blue Jays
6) SS David González, 18, Baltimore Barons
7) RHP Anthony Sinclair, 21, Washington Senators
8) RHP Jim Fields, 21, Annapolis Admirals
9) LHP Earl Fuller, 22, Richmond Cardinals
10) LF Ernesto Condarco, 23, New Castle Colonials

Numbers 1 and 2 are repeats from 2029 with Pagan and Brock. Jason Lancaster is new to the list as is Matt McNeill, David Gonzalez, Anthony Sinclair, and Earl Fuller. Gabino Miller gained a spot going from 6 to 5. Jim Fields dropped from #3 to #8. And Cadarco went from #8 to #9.

Form the looks of it Hector 'Headcase' Pagan will be the starting catcher for the Cardinals this season. Last year he played in 118 AA games going .280-12-92. At 22 he still has quite a bit of development to do, but should be able to hold his own:
Contact: 12/14, Gap: 17/17, HR: 9/16, Eye: 10/15, Avoid K's: 11/11.
Pagan could also compete for the Glove Wizard Award behind the plate, as good of a hitter as he may be the rumors are he is that much better of a fielder.

Gabino Miller breaks camp as the #4 starter for the Blue Jays, Anthony Sinclair will be in the bullpen for the Senators, and Earl Fuller is slated as the #5 starter for the Cardinals. Everyone else will be sent down to the minors to get more experience.

Top Systems:
With 2 players in the top 10, and both breaking camp on the big-league club, it is no surprise that the Richmond Cardinals have the top minor league system in the league.

The Newark Millers come in a close second with 3 players in the top-20 followed by the Barons and Senators. All of these teams are rebuilding for the future and they all seem to be heading down the right path.

As for the expansion teams? Well they have a long road ahead of them, with only one team, the Cannons, having a player in the top 100.

Annual Top System Rank: 20th (out of 24)
Top Prospect: SS Juan Guzman (#87)

Guzman, at 18 years old, is still in our international complex, but could end up coming out soon. He is working on his defense and trying to cut back on his strikeouts. He should have a bright future if he continues to develop.
Contact: 4/10, Gap: 7/13, HR: 4/11, Eye: 1/6, K's: 4/14

Of our top 20 prospects a couple will be breaking camp on the big league roster.
MR Dan Kessler rated #3
MR Hee-seop So rated #4
1B Anzhel Astsatrian #13
3B Tony Inman #18

We have 4 catchers rated in our top 20, which I like to see. Not only because that may be our weakest defensive position at this time, but we 4 solid catchers it gives us more trade bait down the road.

Owner Ralph Corbin wants us to build our farm system up to a TOP 5 system by 2034... we have a long way to go.

Here is a look at our Top 20:

Code:
# Name Age Pos Contact Power Eye/Discipline Speed Defense Level AVG HR RBI
1 Juan Guzmán 18 SS 14 12 7 9 9 INT .000 0 0
6 Paco Santos 22 C 9 5 4 1 15 S A .000 0 0

2030 Delaware Conference Predictions

Ricardo Gonzalez is predicted to win the pitches triple crown, again... and this time shattering his season record of strike outs of 313. Along with Gonzalez the Brewers pitching staff will be one to watch with Julio Rocha, Fernando Fareless and Pat Everette.

On the offensive side of things the DE conference doesn't have any crazy predictions. But there are a few players to watch Mike Johnson of the Brewers, Blake Quirke of the Sixteens and Mark Hoover of the Generals.

Here is a look at the 2030 DE Conference Predictions...

2030 MarVa Conference Predictions

In the Eastern Division the Admirals are predicted to win, which is quite surprising for the "rebuilding" organization. The Admirals haven't seen the post season since 2019. The Barons another rebuilding team and the Surf Dawgs shouldn't be counted out. The Surf Dawgs the 4-time defending division champion still have high hopes.

Over in the Western Division the Cavaliers are set to walk away with the title yet again thanks to a strong pitching staff with all 5 starters making the top 10 pitcher list. Paul Brown won 20 games last season and is set to do it again.

The offense in the MarVa Conference looks set to have a huge year with 7 of the top 10 hitters hitting 40+ HR's The key to the leader board is health...

Chadds Ford Opening Day Roster

Opening Week
This Week: 3 @ Christiana Blue Hens, 3 vs New Castle Colonials
Fan Interest: 100
Owners Mood: Delighted
Budget: $65,000,000 (t-22nd)
Payroll: $30,660,000 (23rd)

The trade for So put me in a bad posistion for the pitching staff. So is one of the better rated pitchers on my roster now so I have to make a move. Here is the problem, only 4 pitchers have options and 2 of those 4 are starters so they aren't going anywhere. The other two are Leo Hampton and Dan Kessler... I see it as 4 options:
1) Demote Kessler let him get some closer expereince
2) Demote Hampton since he had a bad spring
3) DFA Alberto Sanchez who had a great spring
4) Demote So

This is tough...

While I think on the pitching decision I will look at the batters. Same thing here I have to move one. The move will need to be an infielder or a catcher. The problem here is Jose Perez is the catches I would demote and to do that I need to DFA him. Or I go with Nelson Barrera or Tony Inman. Inman is slated as a starter and Barrera is a super utility guy.

And to boot I put in a claim for another outfielder who was on waivers. Dave Lewis, yes the same guy from Georgetown. He has the bat and some speed, but I could use him... again no options, which means I once again would be putting myself in a tough situation... But too many average players is a better place than not enough right?

Final Roster Moves:
Demoted MR Leo Hampton to AAA.
- I was going to demote Dan Kessler is a rule-5 pick so he has to remain with t he big club all seaon. I totaly forgot about that. So how I have some minor league depth and my pitching staff is at 12. For now Hampton will close games in AAA for the San Juan Hibiscus.

Demoted UTL Nelson Barrera to AAA.
- This was a tough call, I really wanted to keep Nelso around because he plays 2B, 3B, and SS at Glove Wizard caliber. But with him having an option I made the tough decision. His demotion may not last long however. He will be battign 2nd and playing 2B for the Hibiscus.

These two moves puts my roster at 25 players (12 pitches, 13 position players) and it looks like we are ready for opening day and our 3-game set against the Christiana Blue Hens.

Roster Overview / Opening Day Lineup:
3B Tony Inman (19 DEF, 15 Speed, 20 Steal, 0 G)
DH Francisco Reyes (12 Power, 13 Steal, 2340 G)
1B Woody Brown (L) (15 DEF, 10 Contact, 14 Power, 1363 G)
RF Vance Burns (13 DEF, 13 Avoid K's, 16 Speed, 20 Steal, 732 G)
SS Vincent Harrison (14 DEF, 13 Speed, 20 Steal, 380 G)
2B Sixto Hernandez (20 DEF, 13 Avoid K's, 12 Eye, 136 G)
C Jack Cavazos (S) (10 DEF, 10 Gap, 12 Power, 168 G)
CF Felix Olivas (S) (13 DEF, 16 Gap, 14 Speed, 20 Steal, 360 G)
LF Jamie Villareal (16 DEF, 10 Avoid K, 14 Speed, 20 Steal, 15 G)

Bench:
C Jack Perez (10 DEF, 14 Speed, 19 Steal, 13 G)
1B Anzhel Astsatrian (11 DEF, 11 Gap, 12 Power, 0 G)
2B Miguel Ramirez (11 DEF, 13 Speed, 20 Steal, 146 G)
OF Melvin can der Kamp (20 DEF, 15 Speed, 19 Steal, 13 G)

Opening Day Starter:
Angel Rivera (11/15/11, EXGB, 113 G / 31 GS)

Rest of the Rotation:
Estaban Calamacho (10/12/14, FBT, 97 G / 92 GS)
Lazzaro Tadiotto (12/12/14, GBT, 22 G, 6 GS)
Alfredo Mejia (10/13/11, NEU, 100 G / 39 GS
Jesus Salazar (10/6/12, FB, 9 G / 0 GS)

Bullpen:
Michael Heathcote (L) (10/10/11, 377 G)
Juan Fernandez (12/12/11, 159 G)
Alfonso Hernandez (12/11/12, 5 G)
Anthony Payne (11/12/11, 75 G)
Alberto Sanchez (12/9/15, 165 G / 2GS)
Hee-Seop So (12/13/15, 6 G)

Closer:
Dan Kessler (12/15/11, 0 G)

After this review I was surprised to see how much experience we actually had. Yes its not a lot, but it is more than I was expecting...

Mangaer Guilherme Guardio set the line-ups, expect for the DH. I put Francsico Reyes in the lineup instead of Miguel Ramriez... and he set the pitching staff, and I made 1 change swapping So and Kessler.

I feel good about this team. I don't think we will lose 100 games, and I hope I am not to far off from my goal of 70 wins.

Personal Message from Owner Ralph Corbin: Season Expectation: Tony,

Welcome to the new season. I hope that the off-season has treated you well! This is also a reminder that your goal is to stay respectable on the field.

Good Luck!
Ralph Corbin

Lets get our first season going...

PS: It is sort of odd to look at the team photo and not really recognize anyone...

Transactions:
Signed Jorge Rosa to a 2-year contract to be the Bench Coach
Signed OF Ndungu Abdelsatta, MR Tom Weareorwear and OF Jason Kennedy to minor league contract.
Claimed OF Dave Lewis off of waivers from the Georgetown Sixteens
Wavied and DFA's C Jose Perez
Placed OF Dave Lewis on the active roster
Claimed 2B Manny Hernandez off of waivers from the Washington Senators
Reassigned C Jose Perez to AAA San Juan after he cleared waivers

Rosa is a perfect fit for this team with his smallball attitude and his love for stealing bases. Rumor has it he is being groomed to be the future manager, as he is an unproven commodity with no experience.

Lewis hit .206-20-55 in 136 games last season. He is an above average OF, who can also play 1B.

Hernandez will be up with the big club soon I am thinking. He has pretty decent stats, is an above average IF and can steal a base when needed. I have have had my eye on him for a while and I am glad he is with our organization now.

Injuries:
SP Yoshtoki Mori, Torn UCL (Tommy John Surgery), 3-4 weeks

Other/Roster News:
The big "firsts" in Cannons history:
Game 1, 3rd Inning - Jack Cavazos singled to right off of Gullermo Alfonso for the first hit in Cannons history.
Game 1, 5th Inning - Jack Cavazos singled to right, scoring Vincent Harrison for the first run in Cannons history.
Game 2, 3rd Inning - Vance Burns hit a first pitch fastball from Ben Sanford 435ft over the CF wall for the first HR in Cannons history.
Game 2 - Esteban Calamacho records first win
Game 2 - Dan Kessler records first save

GM Notes:
My thought was we would get runners on base, steal some, and manufacture some runs and I am hoping that is what we will be able to do... however this week we were only successful on 3 steals out of 8 attempts. Either these guys aren't as fast as I thought they were or we just faced some good catchers... speed is going to be a key to us getting runs so hopefully we can turn that around.

I am going to continue with the lineups the same for the up coming week, just get everyone some time to get used to the game. But we had a bad week hitting. With only one starter over .300 (Tony Inman .348) and the next closest down at .250. Something has to give, yes we are built on speed but we need base runners to utilize it.

Not much to say about our starting rotation. I think they did well for the first week, we really only had one "bad" game. I should go look for another starter and when Mori gets off the DL we could have a semi-legit starting 5. I will have to see whats out there... but the bottom of this rotation is ugly.

Its good to see that all the pitchers go into a game (except my #5 starter who will be this week). We will rely heavily on this bullpen and I do think they will be able to handle it.

I am pleased after 1 week of games. We aren't great, we aren't awful. I feel like we should be able compete this season and I'd like to get on a roll and win some games. It will be interesting in 2 weeks when we play Cape May one of the other expansion clubs.

So far so good.

Players of the Week:

2) Virginia Beach Surf Dawgs (156.0)
3) Ellicott City Express (153.0)
4) Christiana Blue Hens (124.0)
5) Milford Clippers (124.0)

News:
New Castle Colonials:
A player to watch this season is SP Pedro Rivera. At 38-years old Rivera is on the cusp of career strike-out 3000. Last season he struck out 130 in 180 innings, so he has a long road a head of him. If or when he reaches that 3000 mark he will make DBL history being the first pitcher to hit the 3000 mark... And he is six wins away from 200 to boot. This has the makings of a very historic season for Rivera.
Lewes Braves: Signed Marty Carr to a 1-year deal worth $1,500,000.
Norfolk Cavaliers: Signed MR Roger Gentry to a 1-year deal worth $3,680,000.
Dover Generals: MR Greg McAskill will miss 8-months worth a torn labrum.
Ocean City Tourists: Signed MR Jorge Jimenez to a 1-year deal worth $1,540,000.
New Castle Colonials: Will be without power-hitting OF Ryan Sutton for another 2-3 weeks after Sutton suffered a set-back during rehab.
Cape May Beacons: 1B Ramon Franco hit for the cycle going 4-6 with 4 RBI and 3 R's. The 29th cycle in DBL history.

Francisco Reyes Leaving Baseball

Francisco Reyes Leaving Baseball: In the world of baseball, Francisco Reyes of the Chadds Ford Cannons said he feels "over the hill."

So at age 40, the designated hitter has announced that he will call it a career at year's end.

"There's always someone younger coming up behind you and in my case there aren't really any people older, so it's time to get out," he said.

In his career Reyes has hit .288 with 2577 hits, 392 doubles, 12 triples and 639 home runs. His totals also include 1835 RBIs and 1494 runs scored.

---
Francisco Reyes is a rare breed, a power hitter that hit for average on most years, and could play defense. He was always a joy to watch and he will be missed as he announces his retirement. It is interesting to see these "starts" who started this league in 2013 start to fade away, but for every star that leaves another one pops up...

Reyes was one of those guys I always wanted on my team and for 1 1/2 seasons in Norfolk I had him. He never disappointed which is one of the reasons I brought him to Chadds Ford this season. He isn't nearly the player he once was, but I figured these young guys could benefit from the old wise man...

A sure fire Hall-of-Famer, Reyes will retire as the career leader in Games, At-Bats, HR's, and RBI's, as well as the single season record for total bases (444). He will also walk away with 1 Glove Wizard Award, 10 All-Star Selections, 2 Silver Sluggers and 1 Championship (2019 Cavaliers).

Here is a truly distinguished player and one a type of player that the DBL may never see again.

SP Yoshtoki Mori, Torn UCL (Tommy John Surgery), 2 weeks

When Mori gets better he will be sent to AAA to get some reps under his belt. As long as he is pitching well he could see a short rehab, as our rotation could use a boost. I am hoping he comes back and looks good and maybe have some value on the trade market. If I could deal him for a SP prospect that would be great.

Other/Roster News:
none

GM Notes:
Our baserunning was a lot better this week. We seemed to be getting better jumps or just playing worse catchers. Burns, Inman and Olivas lead the team with 3 steals. Olivas is the only one who hasn't been thrown out yet.

Woody Brown is on a tear and I just wish someone else would help him out. Right now we have Inman and Brown leading the offense. Speaking of Inman I am hoping he can keep this up. He looks good and is putting up some big numbers for a kid who has never seen a pitch above double-A before this season.

I had this dream that Francisco Reyes would come in here and lead the team. Just be a team leader and put up decent numbers. I was hoping .265-20-65. I wasn't going crazy he is 40 with sagging ratings. But as the season goes on I am starting to get concerned, I think his days are up and maybe being in the starting lineup isn't the best idea. I just hate to do that to a hall-of-famer like Reyes. Last season in 77 AB's he hit .247-6-16, maybe I should of taken that as a sign... I think he will move to the bench, but still play every 3-4 days. This may be one of the toughest moves I have ever had to make, but I can't have a guy hitting .133 (4-30, 8K's) in the starting lineup for too long.

I like this team, and the funny thing is I am still getting to know them. I think we have a solid core. Yes I really do. We could use 2-more starters and 2 more bats and I guarantee we would be right in the middle of things. That is how much faith I have with the rest of these guys.

We do need to win some more games, but at least we are keeping the games close. We had some chances this week to win against the Blue Jays. One thing goes differently and we end up winning 3 of 4, not losing 3 of 4. I need our rotation and our offense to pick it up a little bit. The defense has been great, I think we turned 10+ double plays last week, and the bullpen is solid.

We aren't world champs, but we are a team with a bright future... at least after 2-weeks that is how I feel. Trying to keep everyone positive around here...
