1909 ABC Division Round Game 1
Los Angeles Bombers (12-4) @ New York Titans (12-4)
The Bombers have met the Titans in the playoffs two times before. The Titans beat the Bombers in 1906: http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...ml#post3952073 And in 1908: http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...ml#post3959949 This year the results were the same: While Walter Johnson would make just one mistake tonight for the Bombers it was a big one, giving up a grand slam to Dan Swanson in the bottom of the fourth. Those would be the only four runs he allowed all night, but it was all the Titans needed in the 4-2 win. Erik Crawford would strike out 11 while picking up the win for the Titans, who advance to the ABC Championship Game. |

1909 NBC Division Round Game 2
Atlanta Thrashers (10-6) @ Arizona Wildcats (12-5)
Manny Reyes was the hero with his arm and bat today for the Wildcats. With the score tied at 3 in the bottom of the ninth Reyes delivered a walk off sacrifice fly to score Jarod Gillett, who reached on an error. Reyes struck out 10 while allowing 3 runs on 6 hits to pick up the win. Arturo Silvera was named Player of the Game after hitting two home runs for the Wildcats, and driving in three wins. While things weren't looking good for the Wildcats before the playoffs began after losing Pedro Rodriguez for the season they've now won their second straight playoff game and the defending champions will be heading to the NBC Championship Game for the second year in a row. |

1909 ABC Championship Game
New York Titans (12-4) @ Dallas Texans (12-4)
Carl Pluckrose turned in a dominant start for the Texans with a complete game six hit shutout, striking out 7 as the Texans beat the Titans 5-0 to advance to the World Championship Game where they'll attempt to win their second championship. Luis Moreno homered for the Texans in the win. The Titans season comes to a disappointing end again. The Titans have won the ABC East six times in their history, and have never won a Championship in the years they've won the division, with their only World Championship coming in 1905 when they reached the playoffs as a Wild Card team. |

1909 - A look at the first overall draft picks
After seeing the success of Jack Barnes this year I thought I would take a look at the first overall picks. After nine drafts Barnes is ranked fourth in WAR our of nine players selected #1 overall in the amateur draft, with the list of first overall picks:
1901 - SP Manny Reyes, Arizona: 11-9, 6 SV, 3.68 ERA, 200 1/3 IP, 189 K, 3.0 WAR 1902 - LF Larry Evans, Detroit: .279, 18 HR, 62 RBI, 75 R, 71 SB, 4.8 WAR 1903 - SP Jon Thornton, Baltimore: has not played 1904 - CF Ty Cobb, San Diego: .333, 5 HR, 41 RBI, 72 R, 65 SB, 4.9 WAR 1905 - SP Flint Poe, Baltimore: 0-0, 3.86 ERA, 2 1/3 IP, 0 K, -0.1 WAR 1906 - SP Rusty Conklin, Cleveland: 0-2, 9.51 ERA, 23 2/3 IP, 15 K, -0.8 WAR 1907 - 3B Josh O'Brien, Seattle: has not played 1908 - SS Todd Watson, Miami: .194, 0 HR, 7 RBI, 15 R, 14 SB, 1.1 WAR That also shows a disturbing trend if you are a Baltimore fan, who has selected first overall twice in the amateur draft and has -0.1 WAR to show for it. Selecting first overall isn't the only problem in Baltimore though, the Atlantics haven't had much luck selecting in the first round throughout their history, with only Mike Jenkins making an impact, although to be fair the jury is still out on some of their later picks. 1901 - Babe Adams (6th overall) - 0 WAR 1902 - Mike Jenkins (2nd overall) - 9.5 WAR 1904 - Beals Becker (19th overall) - 0 WAR 1906 - Ernest James (28th overall) - 0 WAR 1907 - Armando Torres (7th overall) - 0.9 WAR 1908 - Robby Lawson (12th overall) - 0 WAR |
