OOTP 16 has crashed

I have simulated 10 seasons. During the last couple seasons the game has begun crashing. It mainly happens when shopping a player or during the draft. It has become so frequent I can't even complete this year's draft. Even saving the game after each pick causes a crash.

Can anyone help?

the next time it freezes on saving or performing a function, do not click or do anything within the game window, minimizing is fine. do other things or walk away from the pc for a bit. check back in 5-15mins or whatever it takes (i wouldn't go longer than an hour). sometimes this will recover and maybe even clear up the issue, if you just let it sit for a while. if not, end process and try other things.

like...

try defragmenting. don't use the built in one. find one that allows you to set no minimum to size fragment / file size (if the built-in one with your OS has this type of settings, that will work, too, otherwise MS will likely ignore small files for normally good reasons). after a decade of simming, it will at least improve load times into ram.

before doing anything more drastic, make use of the backup function and tick "copy all files."

do you "delete those that do not make the majors" ? it is an option in the global game settings or thereabouts. if you don't intend to keep these players, tick that box and maybe go to the data base settings page and use the "cleanup" or "purge" db function - i forget it's exact name but it will be somethings similar in title.

you may even want to list all retired players with a filter like "All Batters, PA < 100" and a similar pitcher filter. make sure to exclude batters or pitchers in each filter.

this type of stuff can help with all pc/mac, but especially older equipment.

It's not freezing, it's full-on crashing. Windows looks for a solution, then the program closes. I did a defrag, though it didn't seem to be needed. I believe I clicked to delete players that don't make the majors, but I can find where it is now to double check.
It seems to happen when I use the back button. I click on a player to see if I want to draft him and when I click the back button to go to the draft page the game shuts down.

not sure... if you don't have an older backup to test... you may be out of luck if it just repeatedly happens.

it's in game settings - then second tab over i think - players and face gen, if not the first game settings page. in there somewhere. that likely isn't your problem though.

although, i'd still look into the purge database function in the game settings -> database tools page. make a back up as it suggests.

i used to see it freeze if i opened and closed a profile really fast - mistakenly open one and immediate right click... if you are cycling between two pages repeatedly, maybe do it at a slightly slower pace. if it's always the same player or whatever, try deleting them (backup!).

if the defrag didn't work on a couple thousand lil txt files, then that application you used probably ignores the smaller files. it wouldn't take long even if it did notice them. it was not likely to fix the problem, but can help with load times that can seem like a crash.
