Can never win the cup - what am i doing wrong?

Hi,

im now in season 8 of my fictional NHL-like league. I build a dream team that dominated the league for the last six seasons. The team would play a fantastic regular season, finishing everytime with 110+ points, but get kicked out sooner or later in the playoffs.

Today i got swept in the finals by a weaker team, weaker goalie, weaker, scorers. I give up - the game won't let me win the cup no matter what i do.

But i would still like to know from those who managed to get the cup or maybe even many cups how they managed to do it. I just don't understand. And im of course.

Just keep trying! History is full of teams that were really good but just couldn't get the job done in the end. Eventually some of them come through.

Maybe tinker with your team a bit, no team is perfect, they all have flaws. What's yours? Find that flaw and try and fix it.

If all else fails, make some sweeping changes. Either big trades or free agent signings, to try and shake up the team.

Your team is missing something that is getting magnified in the playoffs would be my suspicion. Maybe a so-so defense? A high scoring team with a questionable defense may thrive during the regular season, but will get exposed badly in the playoffs. Take a look at all the games very closely and see why you didnt win. My guess is your defense needs some tinkering. Do you have a lot of offensive defensemen? May need a stay at home, handle the puck well in his own zone defenseman. May need a rugged player or d-man who mucks it up in the corners well. You are missing something.

Thanks for your suggestions. Yes, something is wrong with my teams, but i cannot figure out what.

I did a rebuild (i had to because of the contract demands) The results are:

110 Point Season - kicked out in First Round
116 Point Season - kicked out in First Round
104 Point Season - kicked out in Conference Finals

All the Cup winners played a good but not a great season.

My new center is #1 in Assists and in the top 5 of scorers. My right winger is the league top scorer. I have the #1 goalie and my first two defense players are primary defensive player.

#1 in Goals scored
#2 in Goals against

I know success is not gueranteed when you play a good season. Thats good, because otherwise the game would be boring. But this is just too much. I quit.

Think of the ottawa senators when they were one of the best teams in the nhl. The San Jose sharks recently. If you go back through time and look at the trams that could have been, you'll see a lot of them fall short.

Winning the regular season doesn't mean much except home ice so I personally don't strive too much for that. I like having a lot of rugged and tough guys mixed into the skilled players and good defensive guys to play my pk.

Only 8 President Trophy winners have won the Stanley Cup. Vancouver did it back to back and didn't win a cup. Don't give up on it. Sometimes it's the matchup and I agree with the fact that you need to look at your star players attributes in Team player, determination, big game etc (like the Rangers should have with Rick Nash).

You are right. I do enjoy the game, but it's probably the most frustrating experience i have had with a gm game. I build these squads, they perform very well and in the moments it matters most the season is over.

There's an attribute for "big games" with each players. If you build your team around the wrong players, it makes it hard to compete just like in the game today's. Might be time to trade your core or the players who under perform when the time gets tough.

Just wanna stop by and thank all of you again for your help. I did it. The dragon is dead. Finally. Had to go through Game 7 OT in the First Round and in the Semi-Finals, swept Ottawa in the Conference Finals and got the cup winning 4 - 1. It also was a record regular season with 125 points.

It was my third rebuild and this time i only traded for players who could handle preassure and thrive in the spotlight. It was close, my desk has bitemarks, but it's done. Thanks!
