I don't see an issue with this at all. It's called the "All-star break" Yet it's not really a break to those involved. There are still obligations. They deserve a break just like the next person. I'm neither for nor against it honestly.

Probably not a big problem for us to implement, but I wonder what the season end date is going to be with that added to the schedule.

As I understand it, the break will be scheduled for each team individually rather than everyone together. And that would be in addition to the All-Star and Olympic breaks. Admittedly I know very little about programming, but on the surface of it that would appear to be a big challenge.

It is not the all star break. This was agreed upon when the new 3-3 all star format was implemented. Basically its 1-2 teams getting 5 days off with no practice time either each week. Hockey is a momentum sport and if you are hot going into this break it can hurt.

Some NHL teams with quirks of scheduling had taken advantage of four to five day gaps in the schedule to give their players some down time or for team bonding trips. Depending on when this happens, it could be a great thing for resting older veteran players or nursing injured players in the run up to the final push to make the play-offs. Or it could be a momentum killer for a team on a roll.
Some European leagues have "international windows" in their schedules where players and/or clubs compete in IIHF tournaments or the like. For example, the Ukrainian HEL had no games from 11/2 thru 11/10 to allow players to compete with the national team(s), which in practice was a "bye" week for all teams. Usually, teams in the HEL play two games back-to-back every week near the weekend. |
