I can't stand Billy Bene

I mean, what a crappy draft pick that was!

Billy Bean was a bit better than Billy Beane.
Billy Beane was much better than Billy Bene.

This thread really fell short of expectations, kind of like Billy Beane and Billy Bene.

In all fairness LL, wasn't he was the guy they picked ahead of Roibin Ventura in 1988(?).... they felt the need to make up for him ?

Yep, that is true. The Dodgers took Bene at #5, ahead of Ventura, Jim Abbott, Tino Martinez, Charles Nagy, Ed Sprague, and one of your favorites, Royce Clayton, all of whom went in the first round.

The other school of thought on the acquisition of Ventura was that GM Dan Evans saw Ventura play for years when Evans was working his way up through Chicago's front office and when the chance came to grab him he took it. Of course that was years ago when Ventura was still good and of course the Yankees probably would have traded him for a bag of chips, but that's Evans for you.
