Fictional History of Baseball

Just a quick update. The league has not died out. I have just been busy with real life stuff and helping test FHM2, which should be a great game to play.

I have also spent a bit of time recently playing Title Bout boxing and the barcode games football sim PFS. Which has me thinking when the hockey game is released I might turn this into a multi-sport dynasty like a few of the others I have done. The one change is I think I will keep this one fictional rather than the historical sims I have done in the past as I definately want to keep this league a part of it.

I am anxiously waiting to see how the careers of yougsters like George Odom, Paul Collins, Sam Fuller and others pan out so I will keep this league active and intact.

The question is if I am going to add other sports do I make them fictional with real teams as well - or do I use historical athletes in other sports alongside the fictional baseball players in this universe.

I am leaning towards all fictional players with real teams. This allows me (and hopefully anyone who is reading along) to identify players and pick favourites a little easier as they have real teams to support.

The second decision is what sports to add.

Hockey will be a definate addition using the new FHM2 game.

I think football is also a definate addition. Pro Football Simulator is a fun little game to play and real easy to set up a league. I thought about using BBCF as well (especially with the new patch) but any changes I make to the dat files to try and get a little smaller league size have created crashes. So it will likely just be the NFL but I may add college results using an old excel based game to help fill out the backstory on draft picks.

I would like to include boxing with Title Bout but it will take some work to create a background for my fictional boxing universe. I have dug up and been playing an old golf game from Wolverine studios and I think I will include golf as well.

Any feedback or thoughts on if I should add the other sports to this universe? Or am I better off sticking to baseball here and create a total seperate hockey dynasty (I am definately doing something with hockey when FHM comes out). Would it be too hard to follow with all fictional players (but real teams) in this universe? Or would it round things out nicely and hopefully create some new heroes to track in other sports?

I have now got my fictional hockey and fictional football sims caught up to October of 1940 and I will have them sim along with the baseball. I will be cross posting this in both the OOTP dynasty section and in the FHM2 section.

Here is some quick background. Hockey will of course sim with FHM2 and I started my 8 team league in 1917-18, quick simming through to 1940. Recaps of each season can be found in this thread

For Football I am using PFS from Barcode Games and Bowl Bound from Greydog. I did not use the new bowl bound patch as I found it did not work well with the modified database that I had. Speaking of the database, I tried to get it down to about 70 teams to more closely mirror the era but it kept crashing so there are more teams and bowl games than I want but it is at least somewhat close to the era. For the NFL, I started my league in 1913 and went with the classic 12 team setup of the 1950s NFL. I am importing my graduating seniors each season from Bowl Bound to the pro game.

It is now the beginning of the 1940 season to coincide with the end of the Phillies/Red Sox World Series but here is a quick look at 1939 in the NFL and also the all-time NFL championship game results:

NCAA RECAP

The 1939 regular season saw just 1 team, Nebraska, finished undefeated. The 6th ranked Cornhuskers would face #13 Penn State in the Orange Bowl. There were several 1 loss teams including a surprising Big Ten title for 10-1 Michigan State. It was the Spartans first Big Ten crown in a decade and they would face Cal in the Rose Bowl. The Bears were co-champs of the Pac 8 after winning the conference for the second time in school history in 1938.

The other key bowl games had 9-2 Army facing 9-2 Alabama in the Sugar Bowl and #1 ranked TCU (10-1) playing Oklahoma(9-2) in the Cotton Bowl.

TCU would claim it's first National Title after beating the Sooners 30-17 on the strength of two touchdown passes from senior quarterback Peter Eastman, who was a 4 year starter. The Spartans fell 31-19 to Cal in the Rose Bowl. Penn State put an end to Nebraska's unbeaten season with a 44-21 win in the Orange Bowl while SEC champion Alabama topped Army 37-29.

OCTOBER 1940
NHL SEASON PREVIEW 1940-41

The National Hockey League is set to begin it's 24th season of operation in a few days and here is a look at each of the 8 teams. Most experts figure the Boston Bruins will return to the playoffs after a 1 year absence and the league's most successful team is pegged to battle with the New York Rangers and Detroit Red Wings for top spot in the league. Toronto is favoured to grab the fourth and final playoff spot leaving the Montreal Canadiens, Maroons, New York Americans and Chicago Blackhawks on the outside come the end of March.

BOSTON BRUINS: With 10 Stanley Cup banners and 22 playoff appearances in 24 years the Bruins are the NHL's model franchise. The Bruins seemed to make a seemless transfer from their stars of the 1920's - Keegan Small, Andy Krueckl and Boris Vrabel - to the modern day and a huge reason for that success was the goaltending of Andre Ravelli.

Ravelli did not break into the NHL until 1931-32 at the age of 28 and has played virtually every game for the Bruins since then. He is now 38 and showing signs of slowing down as his rising goals against average and dropping save percentage the last couple of seasons have indicated. He is still the only experienced goalie in the Bruins system and will be once again counted on to lead the team. Missing the playoffs last season and posting the worst numbers of his career has led many to speculate he may be at the end of the road but he may also use that adversity to motivate him to have one more great season.

The Bruins roster from last year remains almost unchanged with the lone newcomer likely to be 19 year old defenseman Derek Rydall. Rydall averaged over a point a game with the Flin Flon Bombers in junior but saw his season cut short last year thanks to a devasting knee injury. He is recovered and looked like he would fit in nicely as the point man on the Bruins powerplay. The big question is does he have the experience to take a regular shift five-on-five this year.

The offensive leader for Boston is 30 year old winger Neil Frank. His point production dipped to 68 last season but he is still the only Bruin who consistantly ranks among the league scoring leaders. Frank is joined on the top line by 23 year old Gabryel Roy, who is entering his 4th season with the Bruins and scored a career high 44 points last year, and 28 year old Matt Jambrosich. Jambrosich, who had a career high 57 points last year, is a former Toronto Maple Leaf and has won scoring titles in both the CJHL and AHL.

CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS: With 2 Stanley Cups and playoff berths each of the past 3 seasons the Blackhawks have enjoyed modest success through the years. The big news in the off-season was the decision to trade their second leading scorer from last year Etienne Chicoine (40-35-75) to the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for 32 year old Jarryd Barczai and a prospect. Barczai had 65 points for Montreal last year and should make a good number two center behind Greg Rennie, the 28 year old who had a breakout season last year and led the league in scoring with 91 points.

The leader on the blueline is 27 year old Keith Hansen, who had 57 points last season and will play over 25 minutes a game. 25 year old Lenny Slotkowski was a 5th overall pick and finally got a chance to be a number one NHL goalie last season. The Hawks hope he will improve on his 3.46 GAA and .881 save percentage this time around.

DETROIT RED WINGS: The Wings were the league doormat for much of the 1920's but the club has been much better the past decade, making 7 straight playoff appearances and winning a pair of Stanley Cup titles. However, the retirement of Tom Nemec over the summer leaves a huge hole on their blueline. As a 40 year old last season Nemec still put up 72 points to cap a career that saw him scoring 1187 points in 1635 career NHL games while winning 3 Norris Trophy's and 4 League MVP awards.

Nemec's retirement gives 21 year old Ben Gerber a shot as a regular on the Detroit blueline. Gerber had 14 points in 41 games in the Motor City last year. The pressure will be on 24 year old Andrew Brown (8-29-37) who moves up to the top D-pair with veteran Joey Chapman (14-30-44) and will be counted on to quarterback the powerplay.

All of the key forwards return including the top line of 31 year old Anthony Manca(34-45-79) between 25 year old Cody McCann (31-38-69) and 28 year old Kingston Morrison (33-30-63). Captain Austin Shabaga (22-19-41) has seen his production dip in recent years but he will provide leadership. 23 year old Lenny Larson, who won a CJHL scoring title with Sudbury a few years back, may get a chance to show he is NHL ready.

In net the Wings have veteran Dylan Turnbull. Actually the 40 year old is well beyond veteran status. He has been the Wings goaltender since 1919-20 and leads all NHL goalies in games played and losses. His lifetime record is 610-705-235 but he is coming off of a 44 win season that saw him post a 2.80 GAA and a .905 save percentage. He has won the Vezina Trophy each of the past 7 seasons.

MONTREAL CANADIENS: Positives have been few and far between for the Canadiens. The team has never won a Stanley Cup and only made 4 playoff appearances in 24 years. The good news is that last year was one of the four.

They dealt their leading scorer from last year to Chicago in exchange for French-Canadian Etienne Chicoine and he should be Montreal's best player this year. The Habs are a young team and a return to the playoffs this year is unlikely unless 25 year old goaltender Max Holden carries them their. The former Sudbury Wolve already has 4 full seasons and 326 career NHL games under his belt. He had a 3.03 GAA and a .906 save percentage a year ago.

MONTREAL MAROONS: The Maroons have fallen on hard times, missing the playoffs each of the past two years but prior they challenged Boston for the top team of the past decade, winning 3 cups in a 4 year span and making 8 straight playoff appearances. Last year the Maroons finished last for just the second time in franchise history.

With an eye towards rebuilding the Maroons traded 39 year old winger Adam Babych to Toronto for a pair of minor leaguers. Babych was the face of the franchise for much of his career but he dropped to a career low 26 points last season. 35 year old Anton Kazanski (15-43-58) is still around and he led the team in scoring last year.

Goaltending is a big issue as 30 year old Dillon Benoit struggled last year, posting the lowest save percentage out of the league's starting goalies. A number of rookies both up front and on the blueline will be given a chance to show what they can do but the odds are greatly stacked against the Maroons making the playoffs this season.

NEW YORK AMERICANS: They challenged the Boston Bruins for the title of league's best team for the first 15 years of the NHL, winning 3 Cups, but the past decade has not been kind to the Americans as they have not played a playoff game since 1932-33.

The Americans are led by their 4 veterans but the on-ice impact of those 4 is quickly waning. Wingers Les Gerling and Jeff Brace are both 39 now and are no where near as productive as they were in their prime. Brace, who spent most of his career in Boston before moving to the Americans in 1933-34 has 1317 career points including 45 earned last year. Gerling, who is the only player with more career points than Brace (1343) and is the all-time career goal leader with 578, spent most of his career in Chicago before being dealt to the Americans in 1935-36. He posted a career worst 6 goals and 18 points last year.

Stronach is a 41 year old rearguard who was dealt to the Americans from Chicago at the same time as Gerling. He is the team captain but saw his ice time reduced last year as he was dropped from the top D pairing to the third line. Tyler Kennedy is the only one of the four who is expected to play a major role again this season. The goaltender played 78 games last year and is the all-time leader in wins and shutouts.


NEW YORK RANGERS: The Rangers recently had a string of 5 straight last place finishes but they broke that with 2 straight playoff appearances including their first Stanley Cup title last year. They have a young team with a load of talent and should be a factor for the next few years at the very least. If I was picking the next dynasty in the NHL it would definitely be the Rangers.

26 year old goaltender Bill Horvath is in his prime and coming off of 2 strong seasons as a starter. 23 year old defenseman Joey Johnson won a Norris Trophy at the age of 21 and seems to be getting better every year. The former Flin Flon Bomber had 38 points last season and plays regularly against the other teams top line.

Up front the Blueshirts are led by 32 year old Robert Dirk, the oldest player on the team. Dirk had 72 points a year ago and may improve on that total this year as his young linemates Nicolas Frenette and Dominick Berube gain experience. The 21 year old Berube had 62 points and was named NHL rookie of the year last season. Berube has also won rookie of the year honours in the AHL and the CJHL. Frenette, 24, is a former CJHL MVP and had 71 points for the Rangers last season.

TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS: An almost forgotten franchise, the Leafs have just meandered through the years. In the early days they made 6 playoff appearances in the first 7 years of the league but generally just snuck in as the 4th place team. Since then they have been stuck as an almost middle of the pack team...occasionally sneaking into the final playoff spot but generally finishing 5th or 6th. Not good enough to make the playoffs but not quite bad enough to get the top draft pick. (Sounds a lot like real life doesn't it).

The Leafs have a superstar in 29 year old Chris Maxwell. He is the greatest scorer in CJHL history and seems to alternate between great and average seasons in the NHL. Here are his point totals for the past 4 years: 110,68,95,69. If the pattern continues he will dominate the league this year and that may be enough to grab the final playoff spot. The Leafs also are hoping to get offense from another gifted young center in 23 year old Chris Bishop, who had 70 points two years ago but was limited to just 8 games last year because of a back injury.

Offense has rarely been an issue for Toronto in recent years. Keeping the puck out of their own net has been the problem. Goaltender Marc-Andre Baribeau has spent over a decade as the Leafs starting netminder but he has had some rough years, although he could sue his defense for non-support on many occasions.

THOMAS WINS 6TH MVP AWARD

There was never any doubt after the season he had but it was made official today that Boston Red Sox outfielder Frank Thomas was named the American League's Most Valuable Player. It marks the 6th time in his career that the 30 year old native of Round Rock, Texas has claimed the award. Thomas set a Major League record with 77 homeruns this season while driving in 203 and batting .375 to win the triple crown for the third time in his career. The only other major league player to win the triple crown was Art Kenneth, who did it in 1909 with the Philadelphia Athletics. This was also the sixth straight season Thomas led the American League in batting average.

The National League MVP award went to New York Giants shortstop John Wagoner for the second straight season and third time in his career. The 27 year old Wagoner led the senior circuit with a .345 batting average. He also had 17 homeruns and 108 rbi's.

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE ROUND-UP

The Philadelphia Eagles remain the only perfect team through 4 weeks of action after the Eagles hammered the Lions in Detroit 47-17 in week 4 action. Meanwhile Green Bay continues to lead the West Division as second year quarterback Christopher Jordan threw for 2 touchdowns and 301 yards as the Packers beat Chicago 31-10.

Elsewhere, Baltimore and San Francisco played to a 12-12 tie, the Giants thumped Washington 35-7, Cleveland topped Pittsburgh 31-13 and St Louis beat the winless Los Angeles Rams 23-17.

NCAA FOOTBALL ROUND-UP

The college season is nearing the midway point and conference games are now in full swing. The Florida Gators continue to hold on to the number one ranking after they improved to 4-0 with a 10-6 victory over SEC foe Auburn. California moves up to number 2 after the Bears knocked off rival Stanford 43-16 in Pacific 8 tilt. The other top 10 team to lose last week was Michigan as the Wolverines were upset by Minnesota 30-25. Senior quarterback Henry Cowan led the Gophers to victory by passing for 392 yards and 2 scores.

LEAFS OFF TO FAST START

The Toronto Maple Leafs have jumped out in front of the pack after a little over a dozen games to start the NHL season. As usual the Leafs are taking advantage of having the most potent offense in the game. Through 13 games the Leafs have scored 59 goals, 12 more than the next highest team.

Leading the way for Toronto has been centre Chris Bishop who has a league-high 21 points. Not bad for the 25 year old who missed all but 8 games last year with a ruptured disc in his back.

AMERICANS ACQUIRE FRANK

The New York Americans made a major deal this week, giving up a big chunk of their future in exchange for a proven goal scorer. The Americans dealt highly touted defense prospect Chad Gauthier to the Boston Bruins in exchange for veteran sniper Neil Frank.

The 31 year old Frank had 31 goals and 68 points a year ago and was off to a fast start again this season with 8 goals and 8 helpers through 13 games with the Bruins. The 1934-35 rookie of the year, Frank has played 460 career NHL games, all with the Bruins, and has 444 points. He is expected to make his debut for the Americans on Friday in Toronto.

Gauthier, who will turn 20 in December, spent 3 seasons with the Regina Pats of the CJHL before being assigned to Buffalo of the AHL this season. In 13 games on the Bisons blueline he had 3 goals and 9 points. The Americans had selected him 10th overall in the 1939 draft. The Bruins have called him up from the AHL and are expected to have him in their lineup sometime this week.

The Bruins have made it a habit of dealing aging star players while their return is still high and have been very successful at keeping the team competitive. Among players dealt by Boston in their early to mid thirties are the great Keegan Small and defenseman Boris Vrabel.

MONDAY OCTOBER 28, 1940

MINOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
MADISONVILLE MINERS WIN KITTY LEAGUE CROWN

The first champions of the newly formed Kitty League are the Madisonville Miners. The Washington Senators rookie league club defeated the Yankees farm team Mayfield Clothiers 3 games to two in the league championship series. Prior to this season rookie level ball had been played out of the team's spring training complexes in Florida.

The series went back and forth as the two clubs alternated victories. The Miners took the opener of the series 3-2 in 11 innings as they were led by a strong pitching performance from starter Yank Young. Game two was a blowout as Mayfield evened the series with an 8-1 drubbing of the Miners. Jose Buritron and John Watson each homered in the victory.

Yank Young was back on the mound for the Miners in Game three and the former California Seal academy league star pitched a complete game 5-hitter in a 6-1 victory. Former Chicagoland Bomber Lou Parker had 3 hits and drove in a pair of runs for the winners.

Facing elimination the Clothiers got the performance of a lifetime from pitcher George Cordeiro. The 20 year old pitched 7 shutout innings and delivered at the plate by hitting a 2-run double to account for all of the Mayfield offense in a 2-1 victory.

With Yank Young back on the hill the Miners were expecting a Game Five victory. Young pitched well but left the game with the score tied 4-4 after 8 innings. Former Hawaii Islander John Finley, who has been converted to the bullpen in the pros pitched a scoreless ninth for Madisonville and the Miners won the game and the series in the bottom of the 9th when ex-Nebraska Cornhusker Mike Tebo led off the 9th with a triple and scored on a sac fly.

Young was named the series MVP after posting a 1.82 era in 24 2/3 innings over 3 starts.

MAJOR LEAGUE NOTES
ANOTHER SETBACK FOR HAWTHORNE

It was learned today in Cleveland that first baseman Dave Hawthorne would miss more time because his recovery from a broken kneecap was not going as well as expected. The Indians, however, were quick to relay that the setback did not seem to be serious and that Hawthorne would only miss 2-3 months more so he was expected to be ready for spring training.

In his career Hawthorne has played in 528 games, batted .311 with 66 home runs and 558 base hits. The 28 year old was limited to just 73 games this season due to the injury. He hit .319 with 10 homeruns and 51 rbi's prior to going on the disabled list. The former Tennessee Volunteer had been named to his first all-star game and played in the mid-season classic a week before his injury occurred.

NHL ROUND-UP

The Toronto Maple Leafs remain the top team in the National Hockey League thanks mainly due to their explosive powerplay. The powerplay is scoring on 32% of it's chances thanks to the Leafs decision to use super playmaker forward Chris Maxwell on the point. Maxwell leads the league with 17 assists and his favourite target with the man advantage has been league scoring leader Chris Bishop, who has lit the lamp 13 times in 15 games this season with 7 of them coming on the power play.

AMERICANS OFF TO HUGE START

While the parent Boston Bruins may be struggling, their Rochester Americans farm team has taken the AHL by storm. The Americans lost their season opener in Cleveland by a 4-3 score but have not lost since, winning 12 and tying 3 of their last 15 games. With 6 Calder Cup titles, including 3 straight from 1937-39, the Amerks have been a model franchise in the league and most of the big names on Boston's 10 Stanley Cup winners started their pro careers in Rochester. The latest player to be promoted to Boston is Donny Marchinko, a 23 year old forward who was leading the team in scoring with 20 points at the time of his promotion. Marchinko is expected to make his NHL debut this week. He spent 3 seasons in Oshawa of the CJHL and has played the past four years for the Americans.

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE ROUND-UP

The two clubs that met in last years NFL title game find themselves in last place in their respective divisions. The Detroit Lions, who beat the Steelers in that game, found themselves at 0-4-1 after a 34-24 loss to the Los Angeles Rams in Week five action.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are still last in the East but they did get a measure of satisfaction in tying in-state rival Philadelphia 12-12. The Cleveland Browns kept pace with the Eagles by beating the St Louis Cardinals 17-7 thanks to a 277 yard passing day from QB Corey Ely and a pair of David Campos touchdown runs.

The big game in the West this week saw Baltimore score 17 unanswered second half points to beat the Green Bay Packers 30-9. The two clubs are tied atop the West Division with 3-1-1 records.

In other action the San Francisco 49ers held off a late Chicago rally to beat the Bears 24-21 and Washington beat the New York Giants 24-13.

GATORS SURVIVE A SCARE TO STAY UNBEATEN

The Florida Gators only played about 17 minutes of quality football against Tennessee and it nearly came back to bite them. The Gators showed why they are ranked number one in the nation during the opening quarter when they put up 24 points and completed dominated the Vols. Then it seemed as if they thought the gun to end the opening quarter signalled the end of the game as Florida allowed Tennessee quarterback Samuel Copeland to take complete control. The sophomore signal caller threw 3 touchdown passes including one to freshman wideout Johnny Glass with 4 minutes remaining in the game to tie the score at 24. That score seemed to wake the Gators out of their funk and Gator QB Brian Ashley led his team down the field and set up the game winning 36 yard field goal with just 39 seconds remaining on the clock. With the 27-24 victory the Gators improve to 5-0 on the season and, at 3-0 in conference, are the SEC's only unbeaten team.

The big game to watch next week is a PAC 8 tilt between #2 ranked California and #7 UCLA. The Bears are 4-0 in conference while UCLA is one of 3 teams tied for second with 2-1 records. A Cal win pretty much guarantees they can punch their ticket for a third straight Rose Bowl appearance.

BIG WEEK FOR THE BRUINS

The Boston Bruins won 3 straight games this past week to claw their way out of the National Hockey League cellar. It started on Monday as the Bruins extended their unbeaten streak to 3 games with a 2-1 victory over the Montreal Maroons at home. Andre Ravelli made 19 saves and Matt Jambrosich's 5th goal of the season proved the difference in the victory. Two days later the two clubs completed the home and home with the Bruins earning a 4-2 victory. Boston was powered by Fran Hellstead, who had 2 goals and an assist in the win. Chad Sumi, who some might remember as a scoring machine with the Quebec Remparts in the CJHL, scored his first goal of the season in the victory.

The Bruins capped off the week with an impressive 4-2 win over the league leading Maple Leafs in Toronto. Boston limited the high-scoring Leafs to just 24 shots while firing 33 themselves on the Toronto cage. Jambrosich scored the game winner and Gabryel Roy added 3 points for the Bruins.

The Leafs retained top spot in the league by going 1-1-1 in their 3 games this week with their best effort being a 4-1 victory on home ice Saturday over the slumping Montreal Maroons.

MONTOUR NAMED PLAYER OF THE MONTH

Montreal Maroons right winger Chris Montour was named the NHL's player of the month for October. The 27 year old had 8 goals and 7 assist in 13 games. On the season, he leads the Maroons with 18 points. The top goaltender for October is 40 year old Detroit Red Wings netminder Dylan Turnbull. The NHL's career leader in games played by a goalie, is off to a strong start this season, posting a 9-4-5 record with a 2.61 GAA and .905 save percentage on the season.

CANADIAN JUNIOR HOCKEY LEAGUE ROUND-UP

The Regina Pats are the hottest team in the CJHL since the last update two weeks ago. The Pats won 5 straight games including a convincing 5-2 victory on the road over the Toronto Marlboros, who remain the top team in the Eastern Conference. The Pats have been scoring goals in buckets led by 18 year old left winger Nathan Pare, who enjoyed back to back 5 point games last week and has 8 goals in the past 5 games.

The player of the month for October was Toronto Marlboros forward Mykola Melnyk. The 19 year old Edmonton native seems to have found a home with the Marlies, who are his third CJHL team. He was drafted by Quebec but dealt to the Jr Canadiens in his rookie year before being moved to the Marlboros this past summer. He was selected 40th by the Detroit Red Wings in the NHL entry draft after scoring just 32 points in 66 games for the Jr Habs. He may prove to be a steal for the Red Wings as he seems to have finally found his game in Toronto. Through 18 games he already has 10 goals and 27 points.

MINOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
KITY LEAGUE TOP PITCHERS ANNOUNCED

Manuel Ferrer of the KITY League champion Madisonville Miners was named the top pitcher in the North Division. The 20 year old Washington Senators prospect was 12-4 with a 4.21 era in 21 starts. He was a 5th round pick from the Tallahassee Rebels of the Florida Academy League in 1939.

21 year old Bob Hodges was named top pitcher in the South Division. A Boston Braves prospect, the lefthander was 10-3 with a 2.33 era for the Hopkinsville Hoppers before earning a late season promotion to the Class B Burlington Bees of the Midwest League. Originally drafted by the St Louis Cardinals in the 10th round of the 1938 draft from the New Mexico Aztecs of the Western Academy loop, Hodges was released by the Cardinals before signing as a free agent with the Braves organization prior to the 1940 campaign.

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE ROUND-UP

The Green Bay Packers have regained sole possession of top spot in the NFL West Division after they beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 27-20 in Green Bay. The victory improves the Packers record to 4-1-1 on the season and put them a game ahead of Baltimore. The Colts lost 17-16 in Detroit on a last minute field goal off the boot of Lions kicker Roy Pearson.

East Division Philadelphia remains the only unbeaten team after the battle of the birds ended in a 17-17 tie with St Louis. The Eagles needed a 43 yard field goal from Shane Ford as time expired to salvage the draw.

In other action the New York Giants held off Cleveland 16-13, Washington won on the road beating San Francisco 21-13 and the hometown Los Angeles Rams got a 370 yard passing day out of quarterback Curtis Cole as they thumped the Chicago Bears 40-17.

NCAA FOOTBALL ROUND-UP
CAL LOOKS TO 3RD STRAIGHT ROSE BOWL APPEARANCE

In the first 27 years the University of California only made 1 Rose Bowl appearance as the Pacific 8 conference was dominated by UCLA and USC. However, the Bears have all but clinched their third straight New Years Day trip to Pasadena with a convincing 41-20 victory over the Bruins. The win improves the Bears record to 5-0 in the conference and 7-0 overall. Despite the victory, the pollsters dropped Cal 1 spot in the National rankings as they slipped to number 3 behind Florida and Texas.

The Gators got another win over a ranked opponent in the tough SEC, winning 26-13 over #18 LSU to improve to 6-0 on the year and retain the top ranking. SWC powerhourse Texas pounded Davidson 54-27 to leap past Army and California and move into second spot.

With 8 of their 10 teams ranked in the top 25 the SEC is clearly the dominant conference this season and another huge game looms next week for the number one ranked Florida Gators as they will entertain 6th ranked Mississippi State.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
HELLIE ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT

Long-time Chicago White Sox hurler Joe Hellie has decided it is time to hang up the spikes. The 41 year old was used strictly in a mop-up role by the Sox the past couple of seasons but in the late 1920's and early 30's he was one of the most dominant pitchers in the game. A four time American League pitcher of the year, Hellie had 6 straight 20 win seasons including the 1930 campaign when he went 26-6. He helped the White Sox win 6 pennants in 7 years and claim two World Championships.

Hellie played college ball at Maryland, helping the Terps to three straight ACC titles and he remains the school's career leader in wins with 75, a total that is second all-time in the NCAA behind ex-Tar Heel and Pittsburgh Pirate George Bertschy. He was the NCAA East college pitcher of the year his sophomore season of 1920 when he went 24-4 with a 1.71 era.

The Boston Braves selected Hellie in the second round of the 1922 player draft and he worked his way through the organization making his major league debut in 1924 when he went 16-11 with a 3.53 era. He also threw a no-hitter that season against the Phillies a month after his big league debut. After going 15-14 4.17 in 1925 and then starting out 5-6 with a 4.17 era the following year the Braves dealt him to the White Sox in exchange for an at the time highly touted shortstop prospect named Mike Kile. Kile would eventually make the major leagues but never became a regular, playing 243 games for the Braves and Yankees over parts of 6 seasons.

Hellie, meanwhile, joined the White Sox at the perfect time. They were an up and coming team with loads of potential. He went 8-9 with a 3.53 era down the stretch after being acquired from the Braves in 1926 but then took off in the 1927 season as he won 20 games for the first time in his career.

For the next seven years he was the White Sox ace and made 10 World Series starts, going 5-3 with a 3.39 era. The White Sox won the World Series in 1931 and 1932. In 1932, Hellie made 2 starts and won both with complete game performances posting a 1.50 era.

Other than missing time with bone chips in his elbow during his junior year at Maryland, Hellie had remained injury free until September of 1933 when he tore a tendon in his elbow that sidelined him for 10 months. It also halted the White Sox pennant streak at 5 as, without Hellie, they faded down the stretch and finished 3rd. Hellie returned to the rotation late in the 1934 season, going 3-4 down the stretch as the White Sox won another pennant but he was not the same pitcher as before his injury and was left off the post-season roster.

He would spend three more seasons in the White Sox rotation, going 11-8, 7-13 and 10-8 during that time but was bumped to long relief for the 1938 campaign. In his final season he finished with a 0-2 record and a 3.42 era with 2 saves in 55 innings of work. His 227 career victories place him 25th all-time.

WINGS FLY PAST LEAFS

Back to back victories over the Toronto Maple Leafs highlighted a 3-0-1 week for the Detroit Red Wings, who overtook the Leafs for top spot in the National Hockey League. The week started with a 6-3 victory in Toronto Monday night followed by a 5-1 victory back at The Olympia on Wednesday. Dylan Turnbull was the hero of the night as the 40 year old goaltender turned aside 30 Toronto shots. Turnbull made 33 saves in a 2-2 tie with Chicago on Saturday and then on Sunday the Wings beat Boston 3-1 as Andy Adell had a goal and a helper.

The Rochester Americans are starting to pull away from the pack in the AHL. The Amerks, the league's most successful franchise with 6 Calder Cup titles, are being led by 21 year old Jacob Vanderhoek (10-16-26) and 23 year old Preston Surgenor (10-14-24) along with 24 year old defenseman Austin Flanagan (6-15-21). Veteran presence is added in the form of career minor leaguer Joseph Novak, a 34 year old goaltender who has played over 700 minor league games and is the AHL's career leader in both wins (316) and losses (294). Neither Novak nor the young skaters mentioned above have ever suited up for an NHL game. Novak, a 2 time winner of the AHL's top goaltender award, was named the league's goalie of the month for October while teammate Vanderhoek was the player of the month.

NCAA FOOTBALL ROUND-UP
MISSISSIPPI STATE KNOCKS OFF #1 FLORIDA

The SEC race is up in the air after Mississippi State went into Gainseville and beat previously undefeated and nationally ranked #1 Florida by a 24-17 score. Auburn beat Vanderbilt 27-16 so the Tigers and Gators are now tied for the SEC lead at 4-1 with Mississippi State right behind them at 3-1. LSU, Tennesse and Alabama, all at 3-2, are also in contention.

The Gators had tied the game at 17 early in the fourth quarter but a 74 yard drive midway through the final period that culminated in a 4 yard run by senior RB Daniel McNeill gave the victory to Mississippi State. It was the second touchdown of the game for the Smithville, Mississippi native, who earlier had caught a 10 yard scoring pass from quarterback Michael Fong.

Meanwhile Texas is now the number one ranked team despite not playing last weekend. The Longhorns move up from #2 and will try to improve to 8-0 with a win at Texas Tech next Saturday. California hammered Long Beach State 57-7 to also move ahead of the Gators, who drop to #3 with their loss.

Mississippi State is 4th but they face another big SEC challenge next week when they host 10th ranked Tennessee. The Volunteeers lost 34-30 to Georgia last week to drop in the rankings.

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE ROUND-UP

The last of the unbeatens fell this week as Cleveland doubled Philadelphia 28-14, handing the Eagles their first loss of the season and allowing the Browns to move into first place in the East Division. Browns quarterbakc Corey Ely threw a pair of fourth quarter touchdown passes to Emilio Haynes to provide the margin of victory. Eagles signal caller Angel Bates, the former Stanford star, had a rough day getting picked off 3 times including two that were returned for Cleveland touchdowns.

Washington moved into third place in the East as Michael Huff threw 3 touchdown passes to pace the Redskins past the Cardinals 28-17. Pittsburgh beat the New York Giants 17-10 in the other East matchup.

The West standings got a lot tighter after San Francisco dumped Detroit 24-3 and Chicago handed Baltimore it's second straight loss 27-10. Green Bay gave themselves some breathing room at the top after the Packers improved to 5-0 at home with a 24-13 win over Los Angeles. Backup running back Michael Flint was the hero for Green Bay, scoring a pair of touchdowns and rushing for a career best 100 yards in the game.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
GIANTS BRING IN ANOTHER VETERAN ARM

In what has become a ritual of winter the New York Giants have announced a trade to bring in another veteran starting pitcher. Last year they added Arturo Serna (18-13, 4.14) from the Cubs and Jim Boelke (15-14, 4.35)from the Cardinals and this year they made another splash with the news the Giants dealt 4 prospects to the St Louis Browns in exchange for 35 year old John White, who was 12-21 with a 4.42 era for the Browns last season.

The Giants run of three straight pennants and back to back World Championships came to an end last season when they finished 4 games back of the Philadelphia Phillies. The addition of White gives an already increbily strong rotation an even greater pedigree.

White's addition means that 39 year old Frank White, with a lifetime 234-169 record, will move to the bullpen as will 40 year old old George Mitchell and his 230-167 career mark. Mitchell and White split the final spot in the rotation last season. The move also means that promising 29 year old Al Vasquez goes back to AAA Minneapolis. Vasquez was impressive in a 1938 call-up but lost his spot when the Giants made some winter moves that off-season and again saw some big league action in 1939 when Mitchell was injured. Boelke and Serna's acquistion sent him back to the Millers last season where he was 12-7 with a 2.76 era before being called up to the Giants in late July. Most had expected him to step into the rotation for next season but with White's arrival he has been dispatched to Minneapolis yet again.
White had been in the Browns organization since they selected him 6th overall in the 1924 draft from the Cotuit Kettlers of the Cape Cod League where he won 2 pitcher of the year awards and an Eastern Academy League title. He made his major league debut in 1929 and has a career record of 175-147 in 397 starts. A three time 20 game winner, the only serious injury he has suffered in his career came in 1938 when he missed 3 months with a shoulder injury but he has rebounded nicely, making 34 starts each of the past two seasons.

The Browns get 4 prospects back in the deal including a pair of 19 year old arms in Biff Gonzalez and Pat Hall. Gonzalez was a third round pick of the Giants after winning 20 games for the Dakota Loggers of the Western Academy League last season. He struggled in his first season of pro ball going 2-13 with an 8.97 era for the Milan-Trenton Spuds. Hall was the Giants second round pick last June after going 16-8 for the Oklahoma Oilers of the same Western Academy League Gonzalez played in. Hall had much more success in his first few months of pro ball, going 5-2, 3.78 with the KITY League Spuds before being promoted to Class B Clinton where he was 2-1 with a 3.04 era in 4 starts. At this stage Hall is considered to have the potential to be perhaps a number 2 starter in the major leagues someday. Gonzalez is more of a long shot to make the big leagues.

The Browns also get 23 year old shortstop Timothy Pesmazoglou, a former North Carolina Tar Heel, who has now been traded twice since the Cardinals drafted him in the 9th round of the 1939 draft. He split last year between 4 different minor league teams at two levels with the bulk of his time spent at Clinton of the Midwest League, where he batted .283 in 54 games. The final prospect is 19 year old second baseman Sonny Hinsley, who was the Giants 7th round pick in June from the Chatham Anglers of the Eastern Academy League. He hit .274 with 8 homers in 120 games for the Anglers before joining the KITY League Milan-Trenton squad where he hit .275 in 66 games before breaking his wrist. Neither of the middle infielders are considered top tier prospects but do add depth to the Browns organization.

The move also creates a spot for the Browns top prospect to make his major league debut next April. Heinie Avila was ranked the 40th best prospect in the sport by Baseball America last April. The 26 year native of Scarsdale, New York, selected in the third round from the Yonkers Bears academy program in 1934, has steadily worked his way through the Browns system starting a AA Memphis last year before being promoted to AAA St. Paul where he was 8-14 with a 4.51 era last year. The expectation is he will begin his major league career in the bullpen but if either 27 year old Tony Newberry, who was 5-8 primarily out of the pen for Brownies last year, or 30 year old Fred Hall, who has seen some duty with the Browns over the past 5 seasons but spent most of his time in St. Paul, falter than Avila will step into the rotation.

NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE
LEAFS LOSE GOALIE FOR A MONTH

Despite losing their starting goalie for a month midway through the week the Toronto Maple Leafs have 3 wins and a tie since dropping back to back games to Detroit two weeks ago. Toronto blanked the New York Rangers 2-0 last Monday thanks to a 23 save shutout from Marc-Andre Baribeau and followed that up with a 6-5 victory over Boston on Wednesday. Baribeau left that game with the Leafs leading 5-2 early in the third period after he suffered a neck injury. 34 year old backup Evan Tilley was pressed into action for the first time this season and struggled, allowing 3 goals on 7 shots but did escape with the victory.

Tilley settled down two nights later and earned the tie in a 3-3 draw with the New York Americans. The Leafs finished off the week with a 4-1 victory over Montreal to move back into first place. Shayne Sandwith, a 23 year old winger in his second season with the Leafs, scored twice in the victory. The Leafs enjoyed success despite the fact their two talented center: Chris Maxwell and Chris Bishop were pretty quiet offensively as secondary players like Sandwith picked up the slack.

Ryan Dirk of the New York Rangers has taken over the scoring lead. Dirk had 5 points in 4 games last week as the Rangers posted a 1-1-2 record. Dirk is a 32 year old left winger from Ottawa who has played 766 career NHL games, all with the Rangers, and has 603 career points.

REGINA SENDS SCORING LEADER TO REMPARTS

The Regina Pats seem to be subscribing to the old adage that defense wins championships as they dealt their scoring leader to the Quebec Remparts for one of the best blueliners in the game. Regina parts with Nathan Pare, who was leading the CJHL in scoring with 36 points in 21 games at the time of the deal. Pare is a gifted offenive talent, scoring 68 points in 68 games last season before being drafted by Montreal with the 54th pick in the NHL rookie draft. He is on his fourth CJHL team having played for Niagara Falls and Peterborough in addition to the Pats.

In return the Pats get one of the league's best defenseman in Gord Bachman. Bachman, like Pare, is 18 years old and was taken with the 24th pick by the Detroit Red Wings in last June's NHL draft. He had 46 points last season and has 22 points in 21 games so far this year. He will team with captain George Papastavrou, 17 year old Tom Misek and 16 year old rookie Chuck Artynski to give the Pats the best defense in the Western Conference if not the league. The expectation is 17 year old Antoine Desmarais, who already has 40 points this season, will pick up the offensive slack along with rookie Oscar Anderson (9-12-21).

Pare's addition makes the Remparts probably the most feared offense in the league and the top line of Pare (18-22-40) with Justin Kamachi (17-15-32) and center Davis Rose (7-15-22) will be extremely difficult to stop. In the three games they have played together the linemates have combined for 19 points as the Remparts had wins of 7-2 over Sherbrooke, 4-1 over Montreal and 5-3 over Oshawa.

BROWNS DOWN CARDINALS THANKS TO WATKINS' BOOT

James Watkins kicked 5 field goals including the game winner from 23 yards out as time expired to lift the visiting Cleveland Browns to a 15-14 victory over the St Louis Cardinals. The victory improves the Browns record to 6-2, best in the NFL after West Division leading Green Bay fell on the weekend. The Browns have won four of their last 5 games but the slumping Cardinals are 0-3-1 in their last 4 after starting the season 3-1.

There were late game heroics in Pittsburgh as well, as the Steelers rallied for 10 fourth quarter points to beat the Packers 16-13. Reigning league Offensive MVP Carl Stevens threw a 7 yard pass to receiver Jason Ray with 7 minutes remaining in the game to allow the Steelers to tie the game and then he engineered a drive that led to the winning field goal from Donald Dickson with just over 2 minutes remaining. The big star on the day for the Steelers was back William Hein, who ran for 115 yards in the game and captured league player of the week honours. Hein has 674 yards on the season after rushing for 1008 a year ago.

Washngton escaped with a 13-13 tie at home against Philadelphia thanks to 10 fourth quarter points including a Keith Medina field goal in the final minute. The Eagles have 3 ties already this season.

The New York Giants have dropped 3 of their last 4 games after a 14-10 loss at home to Baltimore. The championship hangover continues to linger for defending NFL title holders Detroit. The Lions fell 27-17 to the Los Angeles Rams at home and at 1-6-1 own the worst record in the league.

In the only other game the Chicago Bears lost both their quarterbacks to injury and had to put punter Jay Valdez under center late in the game. The San Francisco 49ers handed the slumping Bears their 4th loss in 5 games, winning 27-9 at Soldier Field.

NCAA FOOTBALL ROUND-UP
MICHIGAN AND WISCONSIN CLIMB THE POLLS

Two Big Ten teams were the biggest gainers among the top teams in the NCAA rankings. The Michigan Wolverines moved from #7 to #3 after beating rival Michigan State 29-17 to improve to 7-1 overall and 4-1 within their conference. Wisconsin climbed from #11 to number #4 after the Badgers beat #18 Minnesota 37-17. Wisconsin is 8-1 overall and leading the Big Ten at 5-1.

More turmoil in the SEC as Florida lost for the second straight week and Mississippi State fell to Tennessee. The Gators, ranked #1 two weeks ago, lost another conference game falling 45-19 to Vanderbilt while Mississippi State was beaten 14-10 by the Volunteers. Despite the victory Tennessee actually dropped 1 spot to #11 in the polls. Auburn also dropped from #5 to 10th after losing 41-34 to LSU.

Texas remains number one following a 32-28 win over Texas Tech while California improved to 10-0 and clinched the Pacific 8 crown with a 48-24 doubling of Washington. Independant Army held steady at #6 as the cadets improved to 9-0 with a 33-18 win over Boston College. Another independant, Florida State, is also unbeaten as is small conference Houston.

A quiet week in baseball as nothing is going on right now but we are closing in opening day for the NCAA and academy leagues.

NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE
LEAFS AND WINGS SEPERATING FROM THE PACK

In a quiet week that saw one team (Detroit) play 4 games but most others just 1 or 2 and the New York Rangers none at all the Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings separated themselves a little further from the rest of the league.

The absence of goaltender Marc-Andre Baribeau has not slowed the Leafs down. Toronto has a 6 game unbeaten streak on the go including a big 4-2 win on the road over Detroit in which back-up Evan Tilley made 31 saves. 33 year old Toronto winger Darren Vaness had 3 assists in the win over Detroit and followed that up with another 3 point night the next evening as the Leafs dropped the Montreal Maroons 5-1. Vaness has never scored more than 50 points in his 10 seasons in the NHL but now leads the league with 34 points through 27 games.

The Red Wings went 2-2 during the week starting with home wins over Chicago and the Montreal Canadiens but ending with losses to Toronto and Boston. Speaking of the Bruins, they won 3 straight this week and, like Toronto, are riding a 6 game unbeaten streak. The hottest player in the league right now is Boston winger Matt Jambrosich, who has 9 goals and 6 assists in his last 7 games including being involved in all 3 goals in a 3-1 win over Detroit on Saturday.

The 28 year old Jambrosich led the CJHL in scoring as a 19 year old with Brandon and won an AHL scoring title the following season. He has been a consistent 50 point scorer in the NHL - first with Toronto and then later after being acquired by the Bruins from the Leafs prior to the 1936-37 season. It was one of those typical Boston deals where the Bruins moved a talented but aging player at just the right time in order to maximize the return. In this case it was a then-35 year old Boris Vrabel, who is considered by many to be the best defenseman ever to play the game. Vrabel retired last June after 1646 career NHL games and 1108 points.

AHL ROUNDUP

The Buffalo Bisons have been the hottest team in the American Hockey League the past couple of weeks as they are 5-1-1 in their last 7 games with the most emphatic victory being a 10-3 thrashing of first place Rochester earlier this week. The big run came at the same time the Bisons activated center Adam Tilley from the injured list. The 29 year old has 15 points in the 10 games he has played for Buffalo this season. A veteran of 260 AHL games, the 29 year old Tilley has 196 career points including 65 last season. He was selected third overall by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 1930 NHL draft after a strong junior career in Sherbrooke but he has never played an NHL game.

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE

The San Francisco 49ers playoff hopes suffered a big blow as they lost 17-16 to the last place Detroit Lions at home on Sunday. Lions quarterback William Ortiz passed for 220 yards and a pair of scores to lead his club to just their second win on the year. The loss drops the Niners a game behind Baltimore in the fight for second place in the West Division. The Colts edged Chicago 24-21 to remain a game behind front-running Green Bay. Baltimore linebacker Bobby Dominquez was named the NFL's defensive player of the week for his efforts in the win over the Bears. He had 8 tackles and an interception that he returned for his first career touchdown.

Green Bay remained in sole possession of first in the West with a 38-10 win over the Rams in Los Angeles. Packers QB Christopher Jordan threw for 268 yards and 4 touchdowns in the rout. Packers wideout Alexander Britt was the offensive player of the week after catching 6 passes, including 3 touchdowns, for 128 yards.

Corey Ely had another big game for the Cleveland Browns, throwing for 253 yards and 3 touchdowns in a 30-17 win on the road over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Washington remains a game behind the East leading Browns after the Redskins won on the road in Philadelphia 14-10. The other game saw the St Louis Cardinals edge the New York Giants 17-14.

NCAA FOOTBALL ROUND-UP

No changes atop the polls as Texas remains #1 after improving to 9-0 on the season with a 33-15 win over Rice. The Longhorns have two games remaining against conference opponents beginning with #17 SMU next weekend in a game that will decide the Southwest Conference title. The Longhorns final game is in 3 weeks against 1-7 Texas A&M. Here is a quick look at each of the major conferences:

ATLANTIC COAST CONFERENCE
No one from the ACC cracks the top 25 nationally but there is a good race going on for the conference title. Duke plays it's final conference game at Wake Forest next week, North Carolina travels to Maryland and Virginia entertains South Carolina.

BIG EIGHT
12th ranked Nebraska is the only Big 8 team ranked in the top 25. A 24-20 win over Oklahoma leaves them ready to clinch the conference title with a win at home over Colorado next weekend. If they do it will be their second straight conference title but only their 3rd since 1927.

BIG TEN
As is so often the case the Big 10 title will most likely come down to the winner of the Michigan-Ohio State game. The two schools are 5-1 in conference with the Wisconsin Badgers perhaps having something to say about it. The Wolverines own the tiebreaker with Wisconsin having beaten them earlier in the season. Wisconsin and Ohio State do not play each other this year so if the Buckeyes beat Michigan we will have a tie for the conference. Ohio State's lone loss in Big 10 play came to Michigan State while the Wolverines were upset by Minnesota.

PACIFIC EIGHT
California has clinched a third straight conference title as they hold the tiebreaker on Stanford heading into their final conference game against USC. What remains to be seen is if the Bears, currently ranked #2 nationally can run the table with wins over USC and the Big Ten champion and perhaps pass Texas for #1. The Pac 8 has claimed the National title 8 times with Stanford winning in 1914, 1918 and 1921 and USC claiming 5 titles (1928,1931,1934,1936 & 1937)

SOUTHEASTERN
You couldn't ask for a more exciting finish to the SEC season as 6 teams have a shot at the conference title. With their national title hopes dashed by 2 tough in-conference losses Florida hopes to end on a positive with a win in Georgia to end their conference schedule. Tennessee hosts Auburn while LSU visits Vanderbilt in the other key conference games this week.

NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE
GERBER LEADS WINGS TO WIN

The Detroit Red Wings won the latest battle between the league's top two teams as defenseman Ben Gerber had a 4-point night pacing Detroit to a 5-2 victory over Toronto at Maple Leaf Gardens Saturday night. It was a career night for the 21 year old Gerber, who joined the Wings from Hershey midway through last season and has been a stalwart on their blueline ever since. Gerber scored two even strength goals, both on shots from the point that eluded Leaf goaltender Evan Tilley. He also assisted on a pair of power play goals to improve his season output to 8 goals and 11 assists. Wings center Andy Adell also had a strong game, scoring once and adding a pair of helpers. The victory allowed the Wings to pull 2 points ahead of the Leafs but Toronto does have 2 games in hand.

The Leafs missed an opportunity to capitalize on one of those games the next night as they fell 4-3 to the Canadiens in Montreal. Goaltender Tilly had Leaf fans longing for the return of Marc-Andre Baribeau as he had a terrible night, allowing 4 Montreal goals on 20 shots. Baribeau, the Leafs number one goalie has been out 3 weeks with a neck injury and there is hope he will return to the lineup by next weekend.

One team that is thrilled with it's goaltending is the New York Rangers. 26 year old Bill Horvath (12-10-8, 2.49) leads the NHL in goals against average and shutouts with 4. He was named the league's goaltender of the month for November and has been outstanding of late including a 30 save effort in a 1-1 tie with Detroit last Thursday.

Neil Frank has made the most of his new surroundings. Traded from Boston to the New York Americans on October 22nd, Frank has 17 points in 14 games with the Americans and is now second in NHL scoring. He was also named the player of the month for November after scoring 7 goals and 14 points in 10 games.

CANADIAN JUNIOR HOCKEY LEAGUE ROUNDUP

The Regina Pats continue to lead the CJHL thanks in a big part to 17 year old Antoine Desmarias, who leads the CJHL in scoring with 51 points. Desmarias has passed former teammate Nathan Pare in the scoring race but the deal that sent Pare to Quebec and brought defenseman Gord Bachman west has benefited both teams as they each lead their respective divsions.

Looking at the scoring leaders you can see the NHL's most successful club has plenty of young scorers in it's system. The Boston Bruins have 3 of the league's top scorers in Curtis McIntyre, Chris Seftel and Brandon Moir. However, if I was betting on one player from the group of league leaders listed below to become an NHL scoring star I would take Edmonton Oil Kings center Eli Gunderson. Not eligible for the NHL draft until June, the youngster from Winnipeg just turned 18 last month. He was selected third overall by the Oil Kings in the 1939 junior draft and led the team in points with 78, earning him an assistant captain letter in the process.

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE
REDSKINS CLOSE GAP ON BROWNS

The Washington Redskins moved to within half a game of the Cleveland Browns atop the NFL's East Division following a 27-10 victory over Cleveland. Redskins quarterback Michael Huff led his team to victory by completing 21 of 32 passes for 288 yards and 3 touchdowns. Huff,a first round pick out of USC prior to the 1938 campaign, is in his first season as the Redskins starting quarterback after 2 years as a backup. He helped the USC Trojans to 3 National Championships and was rated the number 1 high school prospect in 1934. Number two that year was Corey Ely, who went to Army and was taken 3rd overall by the Browns in 1938, 6 spots ahead of Huff. On this day Huff got the better of Ely as the Browns signal caller passed for 221 yards but with no touchdowns and 1 interception.

COREY ELY CAREER

College - rated the #2 prospect Nationally coming out of high school. Started 34 games over 4 years with Army. In 1936 led Army to a #3 national ranking and they were ranked in the top 20 each of his four seasons including 12th in his final year of 1937 when he was named first team all-Eastern Independant and the Eastern Independants player of the year. Quarterbacked Army to Fiesta Bowl victories over Northwestern (27-24) in 1936 and Stanford (41-19) in 1937.
NFL- Drafted 3rd overall by the Cleveland Browns in 1938 and immediately named starter. Lasted just one game as he tore up his knee in week one and missed the remainder of the season. Returned for the 1939 season and led the Browns to a 6-6 season after finishing 2-10 the previous year. Has the Browns in first place so far this year with a 7-2-1 record. Has thrown 8 interceptions but 4 came in 1 game against Philadelphia.

Elsewhere, Philadelphia kept it's playoff hopes alive with a 27-16 victory over Pittsburgh and the New York Giants dealt the St Louis Cardinals post-season aspirations a huge blow by beating the Cards 27-3 in St Louis.

In the West, Green Bay crept closer to clinching a playoff spot as Christopher Jordan threw for 308 yards and 3 touchdowns as the Packers beat Detroit 26-21. For the second week in a row Baltimore linebacker Bobby Dominquez was named the defensive player of the week. Dominquez returned an interception for a touchdown for the second straight week, had a fumble recovery and 9 tackles to help Batlimore dump San Francisco 31-14. The offensive player of the week was Los Angeles Rams quarterback Noel Craig, who passed for 365 yards and 2 scores as the Rams won 30-27 in Chicago.

NCAA FOOTBALL ROUND-UP

Texas remains the number one ranked team as they clinched the Southwest Conference title with a 34-15 victory over 17th ranked SMU. We do have a new number two as Cal drops top 7th in the polls after losing to USC 40-26. Despite the loss Cal should go to the Rose Bowl as they are tied with Stanford at 6-1 in conference but the Bears beat the Cardinal.

Wisconsin finished it's Big 10 schedule with a 49-30 victory over Illinois. The Badgers must now wait and see how Michigan does against Ohio State. The Wolverines are 9-1 and ranked #2 with their only loss coming at the hands of Wisconsin. A Michigan win over the Buckeyes gives the Rose Bowl berth to the Badgers. Ohio State is also 6-1 in Big Ten play and they did not face Wisconsin this year so a Buckeye win means its a toss up between Ohio State and Wisconsin.

In the SEC there is a 3-way tie for first place with the possibility of a fourth team joining the mix. Florida hammered Georgia 23-3 to improve to 6-2 along with Tennessee, winners over Auburn 24-21 on Saturday, and LSU, who bet Vanderbilt 34-19. Alabama is right behind them at 5-2 with their end of the year showdown with Auburn still looming.

Small conference Houston, from the Missouri Valley loop, is making some noise. The Cougars moved up to #3 in the polls with a 24-3 victory over Southern Miss, improving their recod to 10-0 on the year with just a home game against Rice remaining. Independant Army is also 10-0 with just their end of the year contest with rival Navy remaining. Florida State is also unbeaten and could make some noise in the final poll but their schedule as an independant has been much less daunting than the other schools in the top 10. The Seminoles are 9-0 with games at George Washington and home to #9 Florida remaining.

5 PLAYERS TO WATCH

Another NCAA baseball season is less than a month away and all eyes will be on whether Columbia can successfully defend the College World Series title it claimed with a win over Minnesota in the finals. Here is a quick look at 5 players who might have a great impact on the upcoming season:

1- ANDY SIECZKA - Outfielder California Bears: The All-American was named NCAA West MVP last year as a sophomore after hitting .372 with 21 homers and 69 rbi's.

2- JAKE FAGEN - Pitcher Columbia Lions: Fagen was 17-5 with a 2.39 era as a junior last season and went 4-0 in the postseason to help Columbia claim it's first College World Series title. He has a lifetime record of 46-23 with a 2.59 era and 340k's in 646 innings of college ball.

3- BILL FITZGERALD - Third Base Nebraska Cornhuskers: Named first team All-American last year after hitting .320 and leading the NCAA in homers with 25. Now a senior, last season was his first as a starter at Nebraska but he did start for 4 years with Tallahassee of the Florida Academy League.

4- BILL ANDREWS - Pitcher Wisconsin Badgers: Followed up a 14-5 1.62 season as a freshman by going 11-5 1.57 last year before being sidelined in May with back problems. If the 20 year old his healthy he can be dominant and despite just entering his junior season, has had pro scouts drooling over him for 2 years already.

5- JAKE HEFFERAN- Catcher Michigan State Spartans: The senior was named a second team All-American last season and was the Spartans everyday catcher two years ago when they won the College World Series. A baseball rat, scouts are drooling at the chance to draft him next June. He hit .261 last year with 21 homers in 107 games and was a 4 year starter with Key West in the Florida Academy League before joining the Spartans.

and one bonus name I could not leave off the list is Texas pitcher Angelo Arias. He was a 5th round pick of the Detroit Tigers out of the Harwich Mariners acadamy program in 1938 but elected to play college ball instead. He went 8-14 with a 2.69 era his first year with the Longhorns and was 14-9 2.70 last year but his control is outstanding and with a fastball in the mid-90s he has scouts looking at him as a possible first round draft pick in June.

RED WINGS CONTINUE TO ROLL

The Detroit Red Wings made a huge statement this week as they hammered the second place Toronto Maple Leafs 9-0 on Wednesday. The Wings followed that up with a 2-2 tie in Boston before returning home to blast the New York Americans 6-1. The Wings now have a 5 point lead on second place Toronto and a 20 point cushion on the 5th place Americans in a league where the top 4 teams make the playoffs. With the seperation between the top four and bottom four it is starting to look like the playoff participants will be determined by New Years.

The 9-0 victory was even more impressive in the fact that the Wings fired 8 goals on 32 shots against the Leafs number one netminder, Marc-Andre Baribeau, who was making his return to action after missing almost a month with a neck injury. While Anthony Manca had a pair of assists and Conner Hendricks 3 points in the win the Wings got most of their scoring from the third line as Kingston Morrison (10-14-24) had a 4 point night, Kory Stamler (4-8-12) had two goals and Lee Taylor (3-7-10) had a goal and two assists.

AMERICAN HOCKEY LEAGUE

The Buffalo Bisons have 8 wins and a tie in their last 11 games and have moved into a tie with Providence for first place in the AHL. The Bisons, farm team of the New York Americans, have been getting solid goaltending from 23 year old Chuck Walton - a Kitchener, Ontario native who is getting his first taste of AHL action. Youngsters Josh Smith (16-11-27), a 21 year old forward drafted 3rd overall after a standout junior career in Cornwall and Ian Andersteen (12-13-25) another 21 year old who was a second round pick from the Jr Canadiens are carrying the load offensively while the blueline is being anchored by a couple more youngsters in 20 year old Kevin Dyck (7-20-27), a former Quebec Rempart, and 23 year old Alexander Edmondson (7-18-25), who is in his third season with the Bisons.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
WHITE SOX - BRAVES MAKE DEAL

The Chicago White Sox have acquired 25 year old outfielder Jim Durham from the Boston Braves in exchange for 41 year old pitcher Charlie Hall and promising minor league prospect Garret Ward in a deal announced this week.

Durham will be given an opportunity to claim the starting centerfielder job in Chicago as the Sox were not overly happy with the job done by John Downs (.297,4,40 in 276 at bats) last year. Downs hit less than .200 against lefty's and while Durham is also a lefthanded batter he has enjoyed success against leftys in the minors.

Durham has only played 42 major league games in his young career and is batting .286. He spent the entire 1940 season with the Braves as their sixth outfielder. In 1939 he hit .310 with some power for AA Atlanta and prior to that played college ball at the University of California.

Giving up Charlie Hall, a 41 year old who won 233 major league games in his career but is clearly at the end of his usefulness seems like a good move for the White Sox but the trade is heavily tilted in the Braves favour when you include Garret Ward.

Ward, in this writer's opinion, is exactly the player the White Sox need to solve their woes in centerfield. The drawback is he is only 20 years old and will need a couple more seasons before he is ready for the major leagues. Ward hit .335 for the Daytona Beach Cubs academy program last season before being selected by the White Sox in the third round of the draft. Assigned to Fulton of the rookie KITY League he batted .285 in 51 games and stole 7 bases.

Ward is a top prospect and the White Sox should have received far more in return if they were dealing him. Perhaps the pressure to win now after a terrible 7th place finish is too much for GM Silver Lipscomb. Lipscomb took over the White Sox in 1937 just after their mini-dynasty and has seen the team go from finishing second in his first year at the helm, to back to back 4th place finishes and now a 7th place with their win totals dropping in each of his seasons - from 95 to 80 to 78 to a dismal 66 last season. So the pressure to do something, to do anything, seems to have gotten to him. This is a trade that will haunt the White Sox, not for several years, but it will when Ward is major league ready.

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE
PACKERS, COLTS, BROWNS CLINCH PLAYOFF SPOT

The Green Bay Packers beat the 49ers 27-17 in San Francisco to not only clinch the West Division title for themselves but also to guarantee a playoff spot for the Baltimore Colts. Christopher Jordan passed for 290 yards and 2 touchdowns to lead the Packers, who will face Baltimore in the opening round of the playoffs in two weeks.

The Colts backed into the playoffs as, despite losing to the New York Giants 34-16, they still clinched second in the West. Giants quarterback Donald Owens, the former Arizona State star who was selected 1st overall in the 1937 NFL draft, was named offensive player of the week after completing 15 of 19 passes for 210 yards and 2 scores.

Corey Ely threw a pair of touchdown passes and David Campos ran for 99 yards to help the Cleveland Browns clinch the East Division title with a 23-20 victory at home over the Chicago Bears. Washington moved a step closer to clinching the final playoff berth with a 34-13 win over Pittsburgh.

In other action Philadelphia kept it's playoff hopes alive with a 30-20 victory over Detroit. Former Nebraska linebacker William Thompson was named defensive player of the week after recording 10 tackles for the Eagles and returning an interception 43 yards for a touchdown.

In the final game of the week Willie Greene threw 3 touchdown passes to pace the St Louis Cardinals past the Los Angeles Rams 28-14.

INDIANS ADD RELIEVER

The Cleveland Indians added some bullpen depth with the acquisition of 32 year old reliever Cruz Rosario from the St Louis Browns in exchange for a minor league infielder. Rosario missed most of the 1940 season with arm problems, appearing in 3 games for the Browns without allowing an earned run. He also made 23 appearances for St Paul of the American Association going 4-3 with a 2.93 era.

Rosario, a native of North Versailles, Pennsylvania has been in the Browns organization since 1927, when he was drafted in the fourth round from the Coney Island Tigers of the Northeast Academy League. He was named pitcher of the year in the Metro New York Division that season after going 20-6 with a 2.68 era for Coney Island. Rosario made his major league debut with the Browns in September of 1937 but has spent most of the time in the minors. He did go 5-9 with a 5.25 era in 1938 when he was used by St Louis primarily as a starter. He is 5-11 with 3 saves and a 4.87 era for his major league career, which includes 36 appearances and 159 innings.

In return the Browns receive 19 year old shortstop William Arnold, who spent last year in the rookie KITY League but did make that loop's all-star game. A former Harwich Mariner of the Cape Cod Division of the Northeast Academy League, Arnold was selected in the third round by the Tribe last June. He is not considered to be a top level prospect.

PLAYERS TO WATCH - WESTERN ACADEMY LEAGUE

With academy league ball just a few weeks away here is a look at the key players to watch from the 16 team Western Academy League.

1- DAVE HUGHS: Outfield - North Texas Cubs: Hughs led the Western Academy League's with 34 homers last season and now in his senior year will be on the scouts radar. 18 year old Fresno native is a 3 time Desert Division all-star.

2- SILVER COOK: Second base - Hawaii Islanders: Cook was named MVP of the Pacific Division last season after hitting .245 with 68 rbi's and 113 runs scored. He also stole 47 bases and looks to be a potential lead-off hitter in the major leagues.

3- GEORGE SNYDER: Outfield - New Mexico Aztecs: Named Desert League MVP at 16 after hitting .358 with 10 homers and 86 rbi's. Still 3 years away from being eligible for the draft but major league scouts say they would have taken him last June if he was eligible.

4- WARNER CORDOVA: Pitcher - Salt Lake City Gulls: led the Western Academy in strikeouts with 176 in 223 innings as a 16 year old. Was 14-9 with a 3.10 era for the Gulls.

5- JIM BARTLETT: Pitcher - Utah Stars: 15-5, 2.08 in 27 starts as a sophomore last season. Plano, Texas native might have the smartest pitcher in academy ball and has tremendous movement on his pitches. Fanned 176 and walked just 53 in 203 innings last season.

6- SAM HERRERA: Pitcher - Austin Marshalls- took a step back as a sophomore going 11-8 with a 2.31 era after winning Desert Division pitcher of the year award as a 16 year old when he went 18-2 with a 2.05 era. Has outstanding control and if he stays healthy will be a future major league ace. Missed 3 weeks last season with shoulder injury.

NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE

The Detroit Red Wings stretched their unbeaten streak to 7 games as they have opened up a five point lead on Toronto atop the NHL standings. The Wings had just two games this week, beating the Montreal Maroons 7-2 thanks to 2 goal efforts from Austin Shabaga (9-12-21) and Aaron Berland (10-10-20) and followed that up with a 3-3 tie against the Rangers in New York. The Wings suffered some bad news in the game as 33 year old center Kory Stamler (4-8-12) is likely lost for the season after being hit with a puck in the face and suffering a fractured eye socket. Stamler is a veteran of 783 NHL games with the Rangers and Detroit, scoring 211 goals and 532 points in his career.

It is easy to see why the Wings are leading the league as they not only have scored the most goals (126 with Toronto next at 124 and the Rangers at 108) but they have also allowed the fewest against (82, with Boston next at 84 and the Rangers third with 91 goals against). 40 year old goaltender Dylan Turnbull continues to add to his incredible career as the Wings netminder leads the league in wins, goals against average and save percentage.

CANADIAN JUNIOR HOCKEY LEAGUE

The Regina Pats continue to roll over the competition in the CJHL, winning 8 straight games and 12 of their last 13 to post far and away the best record in the league. Regina is already 14 points ahead of London, the second ranked team in the western conference.

The Pats have never won the Memorial Cup but fans in Saskatchewan are thinking that will change this year. The amazing thing is this could be a two or 3 year dynasty for Regina as all of their key contributors have at least 1 more year of junior eligibility left after this season including scoring leader Antoine Desmarais (22-35-57), who is still just 17 years old. His right winger Vinny Fieber (22-22-44) is also just 17 while left winger Oscar Anderson (12-23-35) is only 16 and in his rookie CJHL season.

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE
BROWNS BOUNCED FROM PLAYOFFS

The Cleveland Browns lost 21-17 and saw their playoff hopes disappear as Philadelphia beat the New York Giants 24-13. The loss left the Browns with an 8-4 record but that put them behind the 7-2-3 Eagles for the second playoff spot in the East. The Eagles will travel to Washington next week to face the Redskins in the Eastern playoff. In the other game involving East Division teams St Louis beat Pittsburgh 35-13 completing the Steelers fall from playing in the NFL championship game a year ago to last place in the division.

In the West Green Bay will host Baltimore in the playoff game. The Packers lost a meaningless game in Chicago by a 34-20 score while the Colts beat Detroit 44-14, ending a terrible injury plagued season for the defending NFL champion Lions who ended up with the worst record in the league. In the other game the St Louis Cardinals beat the Los Angeles Rams 20-17 behind 4 touchdown passes from Cardinals QB William Greene.

NCAA FOOTBALL

Texas should hold on the number 1 ranking entering the bowl games as the Longhorns wrapped up an 11-0 season with a convincing 23-3 victory on the road over Texas A&M. Number 2 Michigan also ended it's season in style, clinching the Big Ten title and an expected Rose Bowl matchup up with Pac 8 champion Cal thanks to a 27-6 victory over rival Ohio State. Michigan senior quarterback Pete Cole, a Heisman Trophy candidate, threw for 342 yards and 3 touchdowns in the game.

Elsewhere, Army sank Navy 62-28 to finish 11-0 but the cadets ranking went down due to their relatively weak schedule. Two other unbeaten independants remain in the top five but both Florida State (vs #10 Florida) and Houston (vs Rice) still have a game remaining.

Auburn beat Alabama 22-13 to move up to #14 and knock the Tide out of the top 25. The SEC finished with it's tightest race in memory as Florida, Tennessee and LSU all tied for first with 6-2 records while Mississippi State, Alabama and Auburn all a game back at 5-3.

Only an opening week loss to Michigan kept Notre Dame from a perfect season. The Irish ended a 10-1 campaign with a 51-16 victory at Boston College. Junior running back John Simmons continued an impressive career in South Bend by rushing for 276 yards and 2 scores in the game. The three starter ended up with 1919 yards rushing and 16 touchdowns. For his career Simmons has ran for 5036 yards and scored 48 touchdowns. Simmons won't catch Danny Sargent, who played for Texas from 1912-15 and ran for 7368 yards but he should finish his career in the top 3 all-time. He is less than 600 behind current Los Angeles Ram William Bell for the Notre Dame all-time record of 5619 rushing yards in a career.

NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE
BRUINS, RANGERS LEAP FROG LEAFS

The Boston Bruins and New York Rangers both enjoyed a successful week as each moved ahead of the Toronto Maple Leafs in the NHL standings and can now set their sights on the league leading Detroit Red Wings.

The Rangers unbeaten streak reached 5 games with three wins this week. The blueshirts started the week with a 3-2 victory in Toronto as Ranger goaltender Bill Horvath had an outstanding game. Next came a 5-1 victory over the Montreal Maroons followed by a 6-3 drubbing of their cross-town rivals, the New York Americans.

24 year old defenseman Jean Fulatte (6-27-33) has been a big reason for the Rangers recent success. The Quebec City native has a goal and 8 assists during the 5 game unbeaten string. A former CJHL MVP with Sherbooke, he was picked 9th overall by the Rangers in the 1934 draft, and is now in his 5th full NHL season. A veteran of 290 NHL games with 133 career points he is one of the few players who went straight from junior to the NHL without ever playing a game in the minor leagues.

The Bruins have been the league's hottest team for the past month, going 10-0-4 before losing to the Americans 3-2 last Wednesday. Boston picked it right back up on Saturday with a 3-0 shutout of the Canadiens in Montreal as veteran Andre Ravelli made 31 saves for his 3rd shutout of the season.

AMERICAN HOCKEY LEAGUE

The Hershey Bears are on a roll, winning 6 straight and 9 of their last 10 games to move into fourth place in the American Hockey League. The Bears won 3 times this week finishing off with a Sunday night 10-4 pounding of the last place Cleveland Barons. 20 year old rookie pro Charlie St. Martin had a career game in that contest, scoring once and adding 4 assists. On the season the former London Knight, who was selected 16th overall by Detroit in the 1938 draft, has 24 points on 6 goals and 18 assists. He was a member of the Knights Memorial Cup winning team in 1937-38 and is the franchise's all-time point leader with 335 in his 4 year junior career.

GULLS MOVE TO SIOUX FALLS

The Salt Lake Gulls franchise in the Western Academy League has decided to relocate and will be know as the Sioux Falls Canaries going forward. At the bottom of this post is the Canaries new logo as well as their uniform being modeled by pitcher Tom Scheffler, a 17 year old lefthander who was 15-5 with a 3.92 era last season.

The reason for the move is the franchise found it difficult to compete for fans in the Salt Lake area with the professional Class B Western League Salt Lake City Bees squad, a farm team of the Boston Braves. I originally did not want to have an academy league team in Salt Lake City but could not find a suitable uniform and logo until the Canaries logo and jersey file was recently posted in the mods section by txranger.

PLAYERS TO WATCH - FLORIDA ACADEMY LEAGUE

With academy league ball just a few weeks away here is a look at the key players to watch from the 16 team Florida Academy League.

1- JIM CONNER: Pitcher Bradenton Marauders - Went 19-5 and was named Florida Gulf Pitcher of the Year after helping the Maruaders to the Florida Academy Series title. The Richmond, Virginia native is 42-22 with 2.80 era in 3 seasons in Brandeton.

2- ART COREA: Outfielder Tallahassee Rebels - As a 16 year old last season he hit 24 homers and batted .293. Tabbed as a can't miss major league prospect but still is 3 years away from the draft.

3- JOE HOWES: Pitcher Fort Lauderdale Lobsters - Still just 16 years old, Howes was 17-5 with a 2.56 era for the Fort Lauderdale Lobsters.

4- JACK MARCO: third base Fort Lauderdale Lobsters - 18 year old won a gold glove at third base last season while batting .327 with 14 homers and 91 rbi's. In his 3 year career he is a .340 hitter and the Peachtree, Georgia native will be watched very closely by major league scouts this season.

5- PEDRO ESPINOZA: Outfield Panama City Flamingos - 17 year old hit 21 homers and 119 rbi's while batting .305 in his second season in the Florida Academy Leagues. Native of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

NCAA FOOTBALL
FLORIDA STATE CLAIMS #1 WITH WIN OVER FLORIDA

With an impressive season ending victory over Florida, the Florida State Seminoles found themselves with a perfect 11-0 record and a number 1 ranking heading in to the post-season bowl games. The Seminoles moved past idle Texas, Michigan and Stanford with a 31-14 victory over the 18th ranked Gators. Little-used sophomore running back Dennis Grant gained a career high 102 yards rushing and freshman quarterback Thomas Harris threw a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns to lead the Seminoles to their first unbeaten season since going 13-0 in 1914.

Florida State will face another team that enjoyed it's first perfect season as they face Houston in the Peach Bowl. The key to Florida State's success has been true freshman Harris. The young quarterback threw for 29 touchdowns while being picked off just 6 times as he started 10 games, missing one because of injury. A native of Elloree, South Carolina Harris was overlooked in recruiting by most programs and rightly so as he was considered the 22nd best quarterback available.

Texas drops to number two and will have to hope for a win over #19 Penn State in the Cotton Bowl and help from Houston if the Longhorns are going to claim the National Title.

NFL PLAYOFFS
EAGLES AND PACKERS ADVANCE TO TITLE GAME

It will be a rematch of the 1929 NFL Championship game as the Philadelphia Eagles and Green Bay Packers will meet in the 28th league title game. If it is anything like the '29 game that saw Philadelphia beat the Packers 23-17 overtime, fans will be in for a great contest.

The Packers have won 3 NFL titles, in 1932, 1933 and 1938. The Eagles have won twice: 1918 and the above mentioned 1929 game.

At Lambeau the visiting Baltimore Colts took an 8-0 lead on a safety and a pair of Robert Cole field goals before the Packers finally got on the board with a field goal of their own to make the score 8-3 at the half. The second half was all Green Bay as Packer quarterback Christopher Jordan finally got untracked and lead a 71 yard drive right after the break that culminated in a 3 yard touchdown pass to David Esparza. It was certainly not one of Jordan's best outings but the second year pro out of Georgia Tech who has started every game for the Packers since being drafted did just enough to win. He completed less than half of his passes (17-38) but did throw for 338 yards. He was picked off once but so was Baltimore signal caller Charles Myers....but Myers pick came at the most inopprotune time as cornerback Leland Glass returned it 51 yards for a fourth quarter touchdown that sealed the win for Green Bay.

The Philadelphia Eagles are peaking at the right time. The club started the season with 4 straight wins before falling into a funk that saw them go a 5 game stretch without a win (2 losses and 3 ties) before the rebounded to end the season with 3 straight victories. On Sunday they made it 4 in a row with a 37-10 win over the hometown Washington Redskins.

Former Stanford star Angel Bates (24-35, 294 yards passing) outduelled ex-USC Trojan Michael Huff (15-32, 179 yards, 2 ints) for the win but the real offensive hero for the Eagles was running back David Jones, who rushed for 91 yards, caught 3 passes for 31 yards and scored 4 touchdowns in the victory. It was the second time in his 2 year career the former North Carolina Tar Heel scored 4 majors, the first being in week two of this season against Detroit.

MONDAY DECEMBER 30, 1940
NFL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

The Green Bay Packers scored a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns to rally past the Philadelphia Eagles 27-23 in the NFL title game. It is the second title in 3 years for the Packers and their fourth in the past decade. Packers quarterback Christopher Jordan threw 3 touchdown passes and had 349 yards on 21 of 31 completions to be named the most valuable player of the game.

The Eagles, who's only title win came in 1929 when they beat Green Bay, appeared to have the game well in end when Shane Ford connected on a 23 yard field goal with 8:25 remaining in the third quarter to put Philadelphia ahead 23-10. However, tha'ts when Jordan, a second year pro out of Georgia Tech, took over.

Immediately after the field goal to put the Eagles ahead by 13, Jordan engineered an 11 play drive to get into field goal position allowing David Smith to cut the Eagles lead to 10 points. After the clubs exchanged punts the Packers had the ball on their own 36 with 10:16 remaining in the game while still trailing 23-13.

On a key third and 8 Jordan completed a 30 yard pass to veteran running back Geoffrey Dolan. Four plays later Jordan found Dolan in the end zone and the score was suddenly 23-20 with 5:59 remaining. The Packers defense, led by Michael Krueger's huge sack on second and 9, forced the Eagles to punt and Jordan would take over on the Green Bay 14 yard line with 3:48 remaining.

Jordan marched the Packers downfield and had another big pass play with Dolan - this one for 49 yards. On first and goal with just over a minute remaining Jordan found tight end David Esparza in the end zone and the Packers had the lead 27-23.

PLAYOFF MVP CHRISTOPHER JORDAN

Jordan played his college ball at Georgia Tech and led the Yellow Jackets to a #3 ranking as a junior in 1937 when they went 11-1 and finished ranked 3rd in the nation, ending their season with a 26-23 victory over North Carolina in the Citrus Bowl. The following season he was named third team all-american as the Yellow Jackets finished 5th in the polls with a 10-2 record.

He was drafted with the 12th pick of the second round by the Green Bay Packers in 1939 and has started every game for the Packers since. He was named playoff MVP in 1940 after leading the Packers to 27-23 win over Philadelphia in the championship game.

NCAA PREDICTIONS

With the college baseball season just a week away here is how the experts predict each of the 6 conferences will finish.

The prognosticators do feel that defending College World Series champion Columbia will win the Ivy League for the second straight season but they expect the Lions will bow out to SEC champion Kentucky in the opening round of the playoffs. The Wildcats are expected to win the East but Kentucky fans will still be left waiting for the schools first College World Series title as Big 6 champion Minnesota is tabbed to win it all.

The Golden Gophers are always a safe pick. The have won 3 CWS (1915,20,24) and made 14 playoff appearances (second only to Alabama's 15) including reaching the finals last season. It marked the second time in 3 years the Gophers made the finals only to fall to an Ivy League team as Harvard beat them in 1938.

NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE

A relatively quiet week in the NHL with the Christmas break but the Detroit Red Wings continued their winning ways, picking up four more points during the week. The Wings opened the week with a 6-4 victory over the Montreal Canadiens in the Forum, avenging a loss to the Habs on home ice last week. 21 year old defenseman Ben Gerber (11-17-28) led the Wings attack with a 4 point night. Then on Sunday night the Wings went into Boston and beat the Bruins 4-3 thanks to a 37 save effort from Dylan Turnbull.

The New York Rangers extended their unbeaten streak to 8 games after tying Boston 3-3 and then recording wins over the Americans and Canadiens this week.

The Toronto Maple Leafs had 4 games this week, going 2-1-1, but they lost 3 key players in the process. Goaltender Marc-Andre Baribeau suffered an abdominal strain in the win over the Maroons on Monday and was sidelined for the rest of the week. He is day-to-day. Third line winger Ian Cyncar (8-17-25) suffered a neck injury in the same game and will miss about a month. The biggest loss occurred 4 nights later when winger Ben Gilbart (10-21-31) hurt his shoulder and is out a month. Gilbart had been playing with Chris Bishop and Darren Vaness on the second line.

A quiet time in the CJHL as most teams had over a week off as the league shuts down during Christmas. One player who likely did not want to see the break was Toronto Marlboros forward Mykola Melnyk, who had 6 points in his team's final 3 games before the break and has taken over the league scoring lead.

Just as a note for those who did not follow from the beginning. My college and academy(high school) level seasons run from January to May in order for me to have each of them play a 120 game schedule and be completed prior to the June MLB draft. As a result we need to ignore the obvious factor weather would have been.

BASEBALL IS BACK!

While it may not be the major leagues, certainly many future major league stars are back in action as the four academy leagues began their seasons last week and the NCAA opening day is set for today. Things are very quiet in pro ball right now as teams are still a month away from reporting for spring training, but scouts are out in full force checking out the top prospects who represent the game's future.

I am one of those scouts as I work as the director of player development for the Philadelphia Athletics. The A's had a nice jump last season as they went from dead last at 61-93 in 1939 to finishing third in the American League with 85 wins this past season.

We have some great prospects in the system led by our first round draft pick George Odom, the former Mississippi star who went 11-7 with a 3.98 era in 19 starts for the A's. 23 year old catcher Paul Collins (.291,15,76) could have won the rookie of the year award had he not missed a month with a thumb injury. In the minors we still have some talent, most notably last year's second round pick 19 year old first baseman Jonathan Jeronimo along with pitchers John Wood and Tomas Garza. Wood suffered a serious shoulder injury late last season and is likely sidelined until July.

We have had some adversity as well with our prospects, most notably the concussions that are threatening the promising career of Leech Fritze and the terrible career ending arm injury suffered by prize prospect Tom Priest.

I think pitching remains a priority as we focus on the next draft but I would also love to add some more power to our organization. As we progress from now until the draft I will start to focus on and do writeups on the prospects we are considering.

In the meantime here is a look what happened last week in each of the Amateur Leagues.

NCAA BASEBALL

The college season opens today with 8 games. Among the highlights Kentucky will send John Traeger to the mound at LSU. The 20 year old had a sensational freshman season for the Wildcats, going 18-5 with a 2.29 era to help the team make the playoffs. Highly touted freshman Tom Bradbury makes his debut as Arizona State's opening day starter in their game with Arkansas.

WESTERN ACADEMY LEAGUE

Hard to get off to a faster start than Oregon Timbers 19 year old outfielder Doc Sharp has. The draft eligible native of Mesa, Arizona hit .291 last season and through 3 games this year was batting .714 as he went 10-for-14 with a homer and 4 rbi's. Unfortunately his team lost all 3 of their games to the Islanders in Hawaii. Hawaii second baseman Silver Cook, a possible first round pick in the MLB draft, also had a good start as he was 5-for-11 to start the season.

NORTHEAST ACADEMY LEAGUE

The Staten Island Ports opened their season with a 3 game sweep of the Long Island Ducks. The Ports outscored the Ducks 30-10 in the 3 games and their offense was led by catcher Bill Adkins. The 19 year old New York City native is draft eligible this year and is coming off a season where he hit .277 with 5 homers and 58 rbi's.

FLORIDA ACADEMY LEAGUE

The Florida Academy League may be known for it's third baseman at the draft. There are three of them in the league who could possibly be selected in the opening round of the June Major League draft and all three made the pro scouts take notice early.

Fort Lauderdale Lobsters third baseman Jack Marco went 5-for-11 to start the season as the Lobsters took two of three from Daytona Beach. Marco, who hails from Peachtree City, Georgia, hit .327 with 14 homers and 91 rbi's last season.

Kid Ricker of the Orlando Sun Sox was also 5-for-11 in his three games. Ricker hit .285 last season for the Sun Sox and is a native of Morgantown, West Virginia. Port Charlotte's Jack Blair also got off to a quick start by going 5-for-12 as the Anglers won two of three against Tallahassee. An Orlando native, Blair batted .306 with 10 homers and 47 rbi's a year ago.

CENTRAL ACADEMY LEAGUE

Possibly the top draft eligible pitcher in all of the academy leagues is Virginia Beach lefthander Dave Blanchard. The 18 year old native of Smithtown, New York went 20-7 last season for the Colonials with a 2.44 era and was named the Central Academy League pitcher of the year. He got off to a great start this season pitching a complete game 5-hitter, allowing just 1 unearned run as the Colonials beat the Pennsylvania Stars 5-1 in the season opener.

NCAA FOOTBALL
FLORIDA STATE UPSET BY HOUSTON

In what was supposed to be the celebration of Florida State's first national championship quickly turned into the Corey Lamb show as the junior Houston quarterback stole the show, completing 16 of 20 passes for 302 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Cougars to a 44-10 victory over the Seminoles. The win allows Houston to finish the season with a perfect 12-0 record while the previously unbeaten Seminoles will lose their number 1 ranking as they suffer their first loss of the year to finish 11-1. Houston had entered the game ranked 6th.

The final polls will be released next week but unbeaten Army, which beat Stanford 44-33 in the Fiesta Bowl, or Houston are expected to be number one after Texas fell 35-17 to Penn State in the Cotton Bowl. The Nittany Lions offense proved too much for the Longhorns as freshman quarterback Dale Frye threw 3 touchdown passes while running back Jerome Ruth gained 106 yards on the ground.

Michigan fell out of National Title consideration after the Wolverines were hammered 63-21 by Cal. Defense was non-existant as the two teams combined for almost 1200 net yards led by the passing of Cal sophomore quarterback Joseph Shelton, who threw 3 touchdown passes and for 448 yards before leaving the game after the third quarter.

Notre Dame improved to 11-1 thanks to a thrilling 47-44 overtime win over Florida. In the other New Years Day bowl game Tennessee (10-2) beat Nebraska (11-2) 20-16 thanks to an 80 yard touchdown reception by David St. Pierre with just under 5 minutes remaining in the game.

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE
HUFF NAMED NFL MVP

Washington Redskins quarterback Michael Huff was named the NFL's most valuable player after leading the league in most passing categories. Huff's Redskins finished first in the East with an 8-3-1 record before falling to Philadelphia in the first round of the playoffs. The 26 year old finished the season with a league high 3057 yards passing and led the NFL with 23 touchdown passes. He started all 12 games, completing 69.7% of his passes and finished with a quarterback rating of 107.9

It was Huff's first year as a full-time starter. He was drafted 9th overall in 1938 out of USC where he was a member of 3 National Championship teams. He apprenticed his first two years in the NFL, appearing in just 7 games before becoming the starter this season.


The defensive MVP goes to Green Bay defensive end Michael Krueger for the second time in his career. Krueger had 55 tackles and 11 sacks to help the Packers finish with the best record in the West Division. In the NFL title game he had 11 tackles and 2 sacks as the Packers beat Philadelphia 27-23.

Also a USC graduate, Krueger was signed as an undrafted free agent by St Louis in 1933 but spent the entire season on the Cardinals practice roster. He was cut the following year and the Packers signed him but he played sparingly for the next 3 seasons before earning his first start midway through the 1936 campaign and picked up 7 sacks that season. He made the Pro Bowl in 1937 when he had 15 sacks, one shy of the league record. He had 15 sacks the following season(1938) and was named the defensive player of the year as he helped the Packers win the NFL title.

While at USC, Krueger won a National Title in 1931 and was named first team All Pacific 8 in 1930 and 1932, while making the second team in 1931. He started 38 games for the Trojans from 1929-32 and had 29 sacks, which remains a USC career record.

RANGERS CONTINUE TO CHASE WINGS

The New York Rangers moved another point closer to the first place Detroit Red Wings thanks in no small part to the play of winger Ryan Dirk. Dirk, the NHL's leading scorer so far this season, was named player of the month for December after leading the Rangers to a 9-2-5 record in their last 15 games. During the 13 games the Rangers played last month Dirk had 9 goals and 10 assists.

The Detroit Red Wings continue to lead the Rangers by 4 points thanks to the stingiest defense in the league. Led by goaltender Dylan Turnbull, who was named goalie of the month for December, the Wings have allowed the fewest goals against in the league. The 40 year old Turnbull, who was also named goalie of the month in October, leads the NHL in just about every career category for goaltenders. This season he has a league best 2.42 goals against average and the top save percentage at .913.

The Bruins continue to hold on to third place despite a rather rough week. Boston did go 1-1-1 with the victory coming over lowly Chicago by a 3-2 score but the Bruins also suffered a 7-1 loss to the Maroons and a 3-3 tie with the Canadiens during their 2 game trip to Montreal.

After tying Boston 2-2 on December 30th the 4th place Toronto Maple Leafs went to New York for a pair of games and lost them both - 2-1 to the Americans and 5-2 to the Rangers.

NCAA FOOTBALL
ARMY CLAIMS NUMBER 1 IN MEDIA POLL - HOUSTON IN COACHES

For just the second time in the thirty year history of organized college football we have a split national champion as Army and Houston, the nations two undefeated teams, can each claim a portion of the title. Army, with a slightly higher strength of schedule rating, was named #1 in the media poll after completing a 12-0 season with a 44-33 victory over Stanford. Houston won the coaches poll after the Cougars finished their 12-0 season with a win over previously unbeaten Florida State in the Peach Bowl.

The only other time the polls were split occurred two years ago when Tennessee and Notre Dame shared the number one ranking.

STANFORD JUNIOR QB KEN RUSH WINS HEISMAN TROPHY

The Heisman Trophy was awarded to Ken Rush of Stanford. The junior quarterback threw for 3904 yards and 35 touchdowns while only getting intercepted 7 times to lead the Cardinal to a 10-2 record and a #11 final ranking. His passing yardage and touchdown totals both led the nation this season.

Rush, a native of Lompoc, California was ranked 2nd behind only RB John Simmons of Notre Dame in his 1938 recruiting class. He started 5 games as a freshman and 10 games last season for Stanford. His best game of the season this year would have to be considered the win over USC, when he passed for 409 yards and 4 touchdowns in a 47-23 win over the Trojans.

Rush is the third Stanford quarterback to win the Heisman joining Scott Drake, who won in 1922, and Paul Knight, a two time winner in 1929 and 1930.

NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE
WINGS EXTEND LEAD

The Detroit Red Wings had a busy and very successful week, playing 4 games and picking 7 of a possible 8 points to extend their lead over the second place New York Rangers. The Wings opened the week with a 5-3 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs in which they scored three third period goals to rally from a 3-2 deficit. The next night in New York they tied the Americans 1-1 thanks to a 28 save effort from goaltender Dylan Turnbull.

On Saturday Anthony Manca scored a pair of goals to give him 23 on the season as the Wings won at home over Toronto 4-1 and they finished the week with a 3-1 victory in Chicago on Sunday. Youngster Lee Taylor (6-15-21) had a goal and an assist to pace the Detroit attack.

The second place Rangers also had 4 games last week but they started off with back to back losses to Boston before winning a pair from the New York Americans to end the week.

Those two wins over the Rangers along with a victory at home over the Maroons and a Sunday night tie with Toronto allowed the Bruins to close the gap on second place to two points.

CANADIAN JUNIOR HOCKEY LEAGUE ROUND-UP

The hottest player in the league right now is Flin Flon Bombers left winger Ryan Farynuk who has 29 points including 13 goals in his last 12 games. Unfortunately for Farynuk his team has not enjoyed the same success, although they did win 6 of their last 12 games the Bombers remain last in the Prairie Division. Farynuk, an 18 year old Winnipeg native, is in his third season with the Bombers and has 67 points on the year. Last season he had 41 goals and 42 assists and he was taken with the 25th pick in the draft by the Montreal Maroons.

The hottest team in junior hockey remains the Regina Pats, who lead the CJHL with 66 points. The Pats have 31 wins on the season, 7 more than the London Knights, and Regina has suffered just 8 defeats.

NCAA BASEBALL

The Clemson Tigers got off to a hot start, winning their first 6 games and outscoring their opponents, Georgia Tech and Maryland, 50-16 in the process. 20 year Bill Troll, who played just 5 games as a freshman a year ago, is leading the NCAA in batting after going 13-for-21 to start the season. Senior lead-off man Josiah Suggs is 10-for-20 to start the season after hitting just .245 a year ago. The big producer offensively has been first baseman Frank Suggs. The 21 year old junior from Fort Lauderdale is batting .400 with 9 rbi's to start the season. Last year Suggs played in 116 games and hit .258 with 16 homers and 65 rbi's.

COLLEGE BASEBALL
YALE IS HOTTEST TEAM IN NCAA BASEBALL

After starting the season 1-4 the Yale Bulldogs have caught fire and have won their last 7 in a row including a 3-game sweep of the North Carolina State Wolfpack where the Bulldogs outscored their opponents 44-8. The key for Yale has been their offense, which leads the NCAA in runs scored thanks to a pair of junior outfielders in Jimmy Falbo and Jim Ruiz along with senior first baseman Gracie Crossfield.

Falbo (.442,1,10) and Ruiz (.417,2,15) are among the league batting leaders while Crossfield (.244,3,17) is tied for second in rbi's. A 22 year old Pasadena native, Crossfield may finally be starting to draw the attention of pro scouts. A 2-time Western Academy all-star and a member of the 1937 Central Texas Comets Western Academy championship team, Crossfield was undrafted so he enrolled at Yale for the 1939 season. He hit just .221 in 103 games last season but power, not average has always been his strong suit and he had 11 homers a year ago.

A pair of SEC teams lead the initial edition of the College Power Rankings. Preseason favourite Kentucky is ranked number one after the Wildcats swept Ivy League opponents Columbia and Dartmouth during the past week. The Wildcats strength is their pitching staff, led by sensational sophomore John Traeger (2-0,2.08) and senior lefthander Jimmy Evans (3-0, 4.43).

Tennessee also went 6-0 last week as the Volunteers have been getting terrific pitching from senior starters Jim Courcelle (2-0, 1.75) and Al Brock (3-0, 1.33). Junior first baseman Candy Arias (.365,1,14) has been the offensive leader.

LONGHORNS LOSE GOMEZ FOR YEAR

The Texas Longhorns suffered a terrible blow when they learned that starting pitcher Baby Gomez is done for the season after suffering an arm injury. The native of Honduras, who pitched for the Brooklyn Bees academy team for 4 seasons before joining the Longhorns is expected to be sidelined for 14 months. He was 2-0 with a league leading 0.92 era in 3 starts this season. This is the second serious arm injury the 20 year old has suffered as his senior season in academy ball was cut short when he tore a rotator cuff a month before the major league draft. The injury scared off MLB teams and he was not selected in the 1939 draft.

COLLEGE PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

North Carolina outfielder Barton Sawyer was named the NCAA East Player of the week. The 21 year old left fielder hit .455 (10-22) with 3 homers and 10 rbi's last week. On the season he is batting .396 with 3 homers and 18 rbi's. The Brunswick, Maine native played four seasons for the Queens Monarchs of the Northeast Academy League before joining the Tar Heels last season. He appeared in just 10 games a year ago, hitting .400 before earning a starting job this season.

The NCAA West player of the week is Michigan Wolverines outfielder Bill Baldwin. Baldwin was on fire last week, hitting .706 (12-17) with 2 homers and 5 rbi's. On the year he is batting .452 with 4 homers and 9 rbi's. Undrafted after 4 years with the Western Academy Dakota Loggers, Baldwin joined the Wolverines last season, hitting .317 with 3 homers and 21 rbi's in 36 games.

BULLDOGS RIDING HATT ATTACK

It is still too early to talk about breaking the NCAA record for homeruns in a season but Georgia Bulldogs fans are sure excited by the start to the season from third baseman Henry Hatt. The Miami native leads the NCAA with 6 homeruns through 12 games. Last season he only had 2 round-trippers but was given just 39 at bats.

The NCAA record is 26 homers shared by three players. The mark was set by LSU outfielder Harry Hardbarger in 1929 and Tully Desrochers of Oklahoma equaled the mark the following season. A third player, Caleb McCarty of Notre Dame, also hit 26 homers by turning the trick in 1938. Now retired, Hardbarger hit just 5 homers in 206 major league games with Detroit. Desrochers is with the Pittsburgh Pirates but hit .226 in 58 games last season. McCarty is presently in the Red Sox organization and spent last season in between Class A Shreveport and AA Rochester.

Last year Nebraska infielder Bill Fitzgerald missed the record by one as he hit 25 homeruns. Now a senior, he is off to a slow start as he is homerless and batting .279 in 12 games.

The Virginia Beach Colonials suffered a key blow with news the Mid-Atlantic Division leaders would be without ace pitcher Dave Blanchard for the entire season. The 18 year old Smithtown, New York native who won 20 games a year ago, tore his elbow up and will not be able to throw another pitch until at least September. He was the Central Academy League pitcher of the year last season and was expected to be a first round selection in the June MLB draft.

The Colonials are also missing outfielder Bill Hayward, who hit .322 with 28 homers last season, but suffered a sprained ankle in the season opener. He is expected to miss another month. Hayward is also a likely selection in the June MLB draft. Despite the injuries, the Colonials are still first in the Mid-Atlantic Division and looking for their 3rd title in 4 years.

FLORIDA ACADEMY LEAGUE
The Tallahassee Rebels have the best offense but worst pitching in the Florida Academy League. As a result they are just 6-9 on the season despite the exploits of Pat Allen. The 19 year old from Theodore, Alabama was named player of the week and is batting an amazing .540 (27-50) on the season. He is in his final season with the Rebels but played just 56 games over his first three years with the program.


NORTHEAST ACADMEY LEAGUE
The Staten Island Ports have been one of the top teams in the Northeast Academy League, with 4 division titles in the past 9 years and they are off to a great start again this season. At 12-3, they share the best record in any of the 4 academy leagues with the St Peterburg Redbirds.

The Ports have scored the most runs in their division thanks in a big way to senior catcher Bill Adkins (.415,1,16) who has been a starter all 4 years of his acaademy career. 17 year old outfielder John Zannusi (.317,3,9) is picking up where he left off last season when he hit 24 homers and drove in 98 runs. The pitching staff has also done a great job led by 17 year old righthander Livian Pena (3-1, 1.63) and draft eligible Joseph Domino (2-0, 3.80) who was 18-6 a year ago.

WESTERN ACADEMY LEAGUE
Oregon Timbers outfielder Hunkey Maynard has pro scouts drooling at the opportunity to draft him. The 19 year old from Sacramento has had at least one hit in every game this season and going back to last year is riding a 20 game hitting streak. Maynard is batting .459 through 14 games this season and may be a candidate for the first overall pick in the June major league draft.

NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE
FRANK ON FIRE FOR AMERICANS

The Boston Bruins are likely regretting their decision to trade 31 year old winger Neil Frank to the New York Americans earlier this season. Frank has moved up to second in the league scoring race after picking up 8 points in 3 games last week. Despite the heroics from the Calgary native, the Americans managed just a win and a tie in their 3 games this week and remain on the outside looking in at a playoff berth.

Frank's week started with a 2 goal, 2 assist effort in a 5-4 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Monday night. Two nights later he had a pair of assists as the Americans tied the Canadiens 3-3 in Montreal. On Saturday night in Toronto Frank again had 2 assists but it was not enough as the Americans lost 6-5 in an important game against the team they are chasing for the final playoff berth.

The Leafs won two of three games last week to stretch their lead on the Americans and the Chicago Blackhawks to 7 points. In addition to the victory over the Americans the Leafs beat the Montreal Canadiens 4-3 at home on Sunday after starting the week with a 4-2 loss in Montreal to the same Canadiens squad.

AMERICAN HOCKEY LEAGUE

The Hershey Bears have been the hottest team in the American Hockey League over the past month and a half, going 16-2-1 since December 10th to move into first place in the league. The Detroit Red Wings farmclub, which last won the Calder Cup in 1931, has relied on the top offense in the league led by Phillippe Morin (17-36-53) and his wingers Angelo Rukkino (24-22-46) and veteran Jim Bohack (24-14-38).

The Bears turnaround really began on October 31st when the parent Red Wings swung a deal to add veteran goaltender Cody Sugarhead from the New York Americans in exchange for winger Daniel Kubista. Kubista did not figure in Detroit's plans but the Americans called him up from the AHL and he had 12 points in 31 NHL games this season. Meanwhile, Sugarhead has posted the best goals against average (3.04) and save percentage (.896) in the AHL since his acquistion and despite missing the first month of the AHL season he is tied for second with 21 victories.

Sugarhead has had an interesting career but has not reached the expectations of him when the CJHL's Flin Flon Bombers selected him 3rd overall in the 1925 junior draft. Two years later the Edmonton native was taken 6th overall by the Boston Bruins in the NHL draft. He missed a year after suffering a devastating knee injury and did not make his AHL debut until the age of 22. Another injury cost him all of the 1931-32 campaign but he returned to Rochester the following season before finally making his NHL debut in 1933-34 with the Bruins.

Later in the 33-34 campaign he was dealt to the Montreal Canadiens and spent two seasons as the Habs starting goaltender before losing his job to the Canadiens young star Max Holden. He played sparingly as the Habs backup for 3 seasons before being dealt to the New York Americans, who assigned him to Buffalo of the AHL for the 1939-40 season. He made the Americans roster as the backup to the legendary Tyler Kennedy this season but appeared in just one game before being moved to the Red Wings organization.
