Promote from AA?

In real life players are sometimes promoted to the majors directly from AA ball. Not often but it happens.

Can that [or should that] ever happen in OOTP5? I always wait till a player does well at AAA for awhile before promoting him to the bigs. But has anyone ever seen your scout recommend that a player skip AAA altogether? Or has anyone ever done it without your scout's blessing?

My major league 2B gets hurt, my AA 2B is a HUGE prospect (5 blue stars), and my AAA 2B is a "stiff" (2 blue stars) with lower batting ratings and of course lower batting talent than my AA prospect. I'm tempted to promote my AA 2B prospect until my ML 2B comes off the DL. What would you do?

I've done it in a solo league, IMO it normally happens when you have a better lower level prospect than AAA(which maybe a career minor league type guy) and so you move the younger guy up. Also often depends on the condition of your major league club.

Thanks, Steve. I really don't want to ruin my 5-star AA 2B prospect by bringing him up for only a couple weeks. If skipping AAA did that I'd bring up my AAA 2B borderline guy instead. But sounds like you did it in a solo league without destroying your AA prospect's career. Mine is also in a solo league, BTW.

It's true that OOTP5 is the most addicting game ever. I now lie awake at nights analyzing and agonizing over roster moves like this one ....

Go to your Transactions screen. Take player from AA, pick up with mouse and move to major league roster.

We could use more information about your computer system and remember, OOTP only knows ratings, not names.

To Gastric: you may have posted your response to the wrong thread. A few days back there was one asking how to promote players. But in this one I asked for info about the advisability of promoting directly from AA (not how to do it).

Sounds like Steve has done it in his solo leagues. So I'm gonna give it a try and hope it doesn't ruin my AA 2B prospect.

Steve's right. It depends on the condition of your club.
I'd promote the AAA guy for two reasons. 1. The prospect in AA can further his development, and 2. Bringing up that prospect before you need him, assuming your ML 2B is good, is gonna start his ML clock ticking prolly sooner than you'd like it to.

I'd promote the AA guy, if he can be helpful.

I have a solo league designed so the top draft picks go directly to the majors. I didn't have any problems with my test sims. So AA to the bigs isn't a huge jump.

I promoted a player directly from AA with the ratings 3/1/7 (G/F/B) because i had no one else to play 1B. He struggled a bit his first year (.213/.317/.299), but improved greatly his 2nd year in the majors (.340/.437/.437). His ratings currently stand at 6/3/10, so it doesn't appear skipping AAA hurt him much at all.

I'd think that power hitters would struggle making a jump (G/B in HR), but others would probably be able to adapt better to being thrown into the fire. Don't think I've ever moved a guy from AA to the bigs before though.

Agreed. Another thing to consider is losing one of his 300,000 dollar years.

Pujols actually came straight from A ball.

Dontrelle Willis and Miguel Cabrera both made the jump from AA this year for the Marlins.

Shea Hillenbrand was another Double-A to the bigs player.
