Career ending injuries

It seems unrealistic that when a dreaded career ending injury occurs it is announced as being career ending at or near the time the injury is diagnosed. How often does that happen in real life? More likely that determination is going to take a more extended period of time (months or a year or two) in most cases. This would make for a more interesting and immersive game experience as it plays out with news reports of rehab setbacks, second opinions from medical providers, rumors of malingering, unsuccessful surgeries, etc, before the player/coach/doctor acknowledges that the career is indeed over.
