Spring Training Standings
Spring Training has finished up and final standings are here. Boston finished in 1st Place in the AL East, one (1) game ahead of the Yankees. A few surprises in the NL, with the Pirates and Dodgers finishing in last place. Not a good sign for teams that were in the playoffs last year.

Spring Training Stats
Nice to see a few Boston players make the ST stats leaders list. Swihart & Bradley hit the ball very well, while Barns, Bauer and Wacha had solid outings. Stroman, not so much.

Red Sox ST Stats
Great to see Swihart (.372), Bogaerts (.358), and Betts (.392) pound the ball. Really concerned that Goldschmidt (.191), Ortiz (.173), and La O Camacho (.206) really struggled.
As for the pitching staff, Wacha (2-0, 1.13 ERA) and Barnes (3-0, 0.90 ERA) were outstanding, and Stroman (0-4, 6.26 ERA) looked terrible. Tazawa does not look very comfortable in the closer's role.

Spotlight - John Henry (Owner)
Mr. Henry does not seem too happy starting off the season. Not sure why his current mode is "worried." I feel good about his goals of improving starters ERA, as well as playing .500 ball.

Blockbuster Trade...?
So here is a little side commentary. I am really trying to make a big jump forward with the team this year and have come up with the following trade: What do you think - should I pull the trigger on this one or stick with what I've got?
The positives of the trade is a pick up a #1 SP and a young power hitter who plays a mean 3rd base. I would also save about $15 million this year and about $55 to 60 million over the next few years. The negatives of the trade is that I lose my 2nd round pick (remember, I was terrible last year so this is a decent pick), my top prospect (already thin since I traded a lot away last year), my starting 3rd baseman, my projected DH, and about 500k to make it balance financially. What do you think? Would love to have a few of you chime in and share your thoughts.

Thank you for the response. I agree that losing the high draft pick is going to hurt. I really tried to get the deal without having to give up draft picks, but I could not get it done without having to give up my young starting talent (Wacha, Swihartt, etc). I would not do that. I am also worried about having nothing of value in the minors.

Well, hearing of no complaints I am going to pull the trigger on the above trade proposal.

Question for the Board
How do I update the name of my thread to reflect the fact that I am now in 2016? I went back to my first post and not sure how to fix it. Thoughts on how to fix that? While I wait for your help, I will keep going with the season.

Opening Day
The 2016 season is here and the disappointing last-place finish of the previous year is now behind. With some new faces on the team, it should be a fun year of baseball in Boston.
What better way to start the new year than by going to Miami to take on the Marlins and getting a win. Boston jumped out with a quick four (4) runs in the first inning and never looked back. Recently acquired pitcher Sonny Gray took the mound against the young ace of the Marlins, Jose Fernandez. While Fernandez was knocked out of the game before the 4th inning was complete (game score of 30), Gray pitched a solid 8 innings and then turned the ball over to Tazawa in the 9th to close out the game. Gray finished with 8 innings of 6 hit, 1 run (earned) ball, striking out 8 batters and only walking 1. Game score of 73. The Boston hitters showed a little pop at the plate, with seven (7) different players getting a hit, including four (4) extra base hits on the 8 hits total. Pedroia went 2 for 3 (triple) on the day, while Bradley provided the main offense by blasting a 3 run shot in the first inning. It was nice to see that the Boston defense committed no errors on the day. Season Record: 1-0 (Tied 1st Place)

Boston Makes It Two In A Row
For the second game in row, Boston jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the 1st inning. The difference this time though was that the Marlins kept chipping away and actually had the winning run on second base when Tazawa got the final batter to groundout to end the game.
Wacha looked good for Boston, going 8 innings of 5 hit ball, giving up 2 runs (earned), striking out 7 while walking none. Game score of 71. Tazawa looked shaky, giving up 2 hits and 1 earned run but did pick up the save. Miami had Alvarez on the mound, going 6 innings while giving up 4 runs (earned) on 6 hits. Game score 45. Swihart (2 for 4, double) and Bogaerts (1-4, bases clearing double). Bradley picked up the team's first stolen base of the year. For the Marlins, Prado (2-4, double) and Realmuto (1-3, HR) led the hitting attack. Season Record: 2-0 (Tied 1st Place)

Team Finances
Start of the new season and team finances are looking real good. With the lowest payroll in the league coupled to a nice bankroll of money for extensions and free agents, the team is set up nicely for making moves throughout the year.

Sox Lose First Game of Season
Despite a solid outing from Stroman, Boston just could not get anything going against the Marlins, losing 3 to 1.
Stroman went 7 innings, giving up 2 runs (earned) on 5 hits, striking out 5 and walking 2. Game score 62. Newly acquired set up man Crocket struggled (1 run (earned) on 2 hits in one inning) in his first appearance of the year. The Boston hitters just could not get anything going against Chad Billingsly (7 innings, 3 hits (0 runs), 9 k's and 2 walks). Bogaerts (2 for 3, double) and Goldschmidt (1 for 3, double and walk) were the only real bright spots on offense. Season Record: 2-1 (Tied 2nd Place)

Bauer Tosses 1-Hitter
Trevor Bauer was masterful today in his outing against the 1st place Tampa Bay Rays. Bauer pitched a complete game 1 hitter, striking out 6 and walking just 1 batter. Game score 90. The lone hit came in the bottom of the 7th inning by Jaso. What a great way for Bauer to start off the year!
Matt Moore took the loss despite his respectable outing of 5 hit, 3 runs (earned) over 6 innings. Goldschmidt had a nice day at the plate (2 for 4, double run & rbi), Cecchini smashed a solo shot in the 9th, and Swihart had 4 walks on the day. Season Record: 3-1 (Tied 1st Place)

Odorizzi Shuts Down Boston
One day after shutting down the Rays, Jake Odorizzi returned the favor by blanking Boston with a CG, 10 k's, 3 hit shutout. Game score 90. Boston starter Matt Barnes lasted only 3 innings before getting removed from the game. Barnes gave up 5 runs (earned) on 8 hits, struck-out 3 and walked 3. Game score 21. On a bright note, Samardzija came in and pitched 5 innings of 1 hit ball - looking great and setting himself up for more appearances. Not much on the offensive side of things for Boston, with Swihart (2 for 4) being a bright spot early in the season.
Season Record: 3-2 (Tied 2nd Place)

Gray Dominate in Win
Yes it has only been two (2) games, but Sonny Gray is already proving that the trade for him was well worth it. Gray (2-0) looked sharp in the 3-1 win over the Rays. Gray went 8 innings, allowing 1 run (earned) on 1 hit, striking out 3 and walking 2. Game score 77. Tazawa pitched a perfect 9th inning (2 k's) to pick up his 2nd save of the year. Taking the loss for the Rays was Drew Smyly (1-1) who went 5 2/3 innings, 3 runs (earned) on 6 hits, 7 k's, and 3 walks. Game score 49. Lawrie had a good day at the plate, going 2 for 4 (2 doubles), as did Vazquez (2 for 4, triple with 3 rbi) and Betts (2 for 4, double).
Season Record: 4-2 (Tied 1st Place)
