Are you using the match engine or just sim in your season?

Am about to get started with my NHL season. I wonder if you guys watch any of your team's games live or just set lines and sim to next day. Watching will be better for immersion but takes more time.. I hope FHM implements real time simulation like in OOTP in the future. I love that feature.

Combintion of both. Mostly quick sim but throw in some Live watching as well. It depends how fast you want to get through the season mainly.

I set my 20 skaters and lines for each individual game...and then quick sim them.

mixture of both.
currently doing a dynasty, but the way I have been doing each game seems to be very detailed and time consuming if I do it for all the games.

so do a little mixture of everything right now in the game

I just set lines, tactics etc and then skip to the next day.

Because the match engine is a mess! And tedious to watch. There really is no fun there at all and it isn't going to get changed until earliest next edition.

The game is great though, just could be so much better with less of a boring match engine.

EHM is streaks ahead when it comes to the actually game engine. Simming is the way to go.

I've been quick simming, and coaching/watching during the playoffs and key games late in the season. Usually I watch the extended highlights or whatever it is called. I feel like I can win a game occasionally, that I would have lost in quick-sim, by adjusting lines and tactics when my team is getting badly outshot, losing late etc. Also by pulling the goalie before he gives up 6-7 goals.

When you say "the match engine is a mess", what do you mean? Is it producing unrealistic results verses just simming the games? Or do you say that because you feel that it is tedious to watch?

The reason I ask is because, if the match engine is not producing realistic results, I'd really want to know what it is doing wrong so I don't waste my time playing out matches.

Thanks,
Mark

I am not by far the most educated hockey smart person, but I love watching the games. They get exciting. Can't wait for they come up with in further versions.

There have been several occasions, to the hilarity of several posters on here and myself at home, that a player has scored a wonder goal from behind his own cage.

There are also occasions when the texts states a player has crossed the blue line, but the "puck" is still in the defensive zone.

Mainly because it's tedious though. I don't normally see ridiculous scores, just occasional hilarious goals.

Reality captured in match engine?

I have not noticed the first of the oddities reported here, but I don't doubt that it occasionally occurs. The second one mentioned above is an example of a small class of timing oddities (another is that displayed lines do not always keep up with the simulated line changes revealed in the play-by-play). My experience is that the results generated by the match engine are a good approximation to reality, particularly given that this is only the second incarnation of the engine. I expect that many of the timing oddities will be ironed out in future editions of the match engine. AI management of games is pretty good, including things like not using the same goalie for every game (a problem that I noticed with a different hockey sim program out there). One thing that is missing in the present version appears to be the occurrence of offsetting minor penalties (e.g., two minutes each for roughing). Those occur with some frequency in reality, but I've never seen it in FHM2.

I've had the play-by-play state a goal was off the face-off, but the shot location was behind the goal. This has occurred a few times.

Please post a bug report with all the details when you notice things like that, so the developers can take a look and fix it.

It was in a sim to end of period situation/scoring summary, so I wasn't paying that close attention. And I expect a certain disconnect in that fast sim style. I have been posting bug reports with supporting screen shots for major issues I do catch, that are reportable, with uploaded saves where they were requested. If I was using the match engine to actually watch the games and modify them, I definitely would.
