foreign players in historical mode

I've been doing a quick replay of the 80's and this is something i want to bring to the creators attention. Alot of foreign players get drafted, and we can't sign them. That's fine. They aren't allowed to leave their leagues.

Eventually, the drafting teams lose their rights, and on July 1st, 1991, all these players become free agents.

EX: Alexander Mogilny drafted 7th overall by CPU team Hartford in 1987. Mogilny's next transaction is signing with Montreal on July 1st, 1991 to a 4 year contract.

Obviously, this shouldn't be the case. The teams should be able to hold on to those players draft rights. I don't remember how long draft rights lasted, but in real life, these players had to sign with the teams that drafted them when they got the chance to move over to the NHL.

The draft/rights rules in some historical seasons have to be handled a little abstractly as it's not possible to model the exact details yet.

In this case, though, the draft rights weren't as permanent as you think for the eastern-bloc players - Anton Stastny was drafted by the Flyers in 1978 and then again a year later by Quebec; Fetisov was drafted by Montreal in 1978 and New Jersey in 1983. The ideal solution would be to allow/require re-drafting once the rights expire, but that's going to require some special coding to only apply it to a certain group of players (although I think I may have just thought of a way to do at least part of it via a database adjustment.)

I see what your saying. Im not too familar with that era as i was too young, but just from a gaming perspective, why not add an option to make all players available. If there is a realistic solution, then hopefully, its easy to implement!!

I'd also hope the game would be able to provide feedback on the matter. Maybe a message stating how likely the player is to be allowed to defect or sign, or how long until the rights lapse. I don't know, just thinking off the top of my head.

With the way the game works at the moment, I know i can't get these players even if i draft them, i feel like the CPU will be wasting draft picks.

Just a thought.

Don't other players who get drafted, but not sign, get re-entered to the draft pool too? It wouldn't just be specific players, would it?

Depends on the rules settings for the draft. Some of them make every undrafted player a free agent, others keep them out of the league (and require re-drafting) if they're still eligible by age to be drafted again.
