Steve Bartman

Did anybody watch the ESPN film "Catching Hell"? I saw something that I never noticed before. Just before the ball arrived, Moises Alou CLOSED HIS EYES. Everybody just assumed it would have been caught. Maybe not.

Before HDTV, you probably would not have noticed! But, professional ballplayer that Alou was, I doubt that he would have kept his eyes closed long enough to lose track of the ball. I did not see the film, but if they show that scene in slo mo, maybe a blink caused by impending impact with the wall seems prolonged to the viewer.

Hmmm. Thanks for reminding me about Bartman and long-suffering ChiCub fans. I'm from New York and since my team went down with hardly a squeak last night, I needed something to pique my interest in tonight's wildcard game and thereby soothe my pain, so there it is.

I remember that a non-existent Florida team was in it, but I don't remember if they won or lost. Also didn't remember the year. That's good attention to detail, like remembering the name of the horse in "The Sting" (Lucky Dan).

Not predicted, they had swept Miami.

Regardless of if Alou would have caught it or not I despise Cubs fans for blaming a goat & a guy for all of their failures. For years no one blamed Dusty for leaving Prior in too long, for Alex Gonzalez booting a ball that opened up the inning for the Marlins. This was Game 5, they still lost the next 2 games. i hope the Cubs never wins a WS in my lifetime. That being said there current team is rather impressive looking going forward. i do believe they are a fluke but so was my team in 2005.

Hmmm. Cubs win and are in the playoffs after a 12-year absence. [Strokes beard in meditative thought.]

I've been saying these exact words for years and years. No one ever blames Alex Gonzalez. Never. And it's too bad because most of the blame falls squarely on his shoulders.

Actually, it was Game 6, not Game 5.

Nor does anyone remember that there was still a Game 7—and the Cubs lost the Series more so there than in Game 6.

I think very few people actually blame the guy at this point. Most of the uproar was raw emotion that has more than run it's coarse. Even Alou has come out and said as much.

It's always the media or fans of other teams that bring him up these days.

Perhaps, but if I were Bartman, I would not be testing your statements by making a public appearance in the North Side anytime soon.

Honestly, I think Bartman would be welcomed back with open arms. I think most feel bad for how he was treated. Again you never hear Cubs fans bringing him up. His treatment was an embarrassment to fan base. We all forgive Bartman and we all hope he forgives us too.

I'll take your word for it. Has he ever actually "come of out hiding"?

Not at all. Which is commendable because he surely could have cashed in on his fame. I wouldn't be surprised if he's still going to games. It would take a pretty keen eye to recognize the guy without the hat and headphones. I certainly wouldn't recognize him if he was sitting next me at a game.

If I was Bartman i would not go near any chicago public sports venues. While there is alot of rational people out there, the reverse is also true. There are a great many uneducated, emotion driven, petty people out there.

Its been over 10 years. Athletes have done far worse. But I wouldn't mind seeing the cubs win this year so we can stop hearing the goat excuse.
