See if you can spot the Detroit Wolverine among the Liberty League batting leaders. Hint: I may have cheated and not put one in there, though there is one ex-Wolverine listed that I, in my infinite wisdom, traded away this past Winter.

I am listing the top 25 hitters in batting average plus any others who lead in some category. With 8 teams, that leaves room for an average of 3+ batters per team, yet there is no room for a Wolverine....

The reason for this is 1) our team hitting stinks and 2) we only have one player who has played enough to qualify for the the list. Injuries have been pretty devastating this season to our offense.
Told you, I suck with names. I was entirely convinced it was Joe Coffey. Now I looked at my newspaper cutouts and it was not Joe Coffey. Although I was pretty close...

Questdog,

I think this is my fourth time getting that book from the library. It pales in comparison to the detail you present us with. As always, your work is top notch.

Any chance of files of this great history ever becoming available for some of the less creative of us?

Thank you for a great serial read.

You mean as a Quickstart?

I don't think so, because it would not work by just playing OOTP. I do a lot of stuff by hand that 1) would be difficult to write instructions for and 2) no one else would want to put in the time it takes.

But I have always thought about making a Quickstart that would be able to be played out of the box. Something more along the lines of my old Dixie Association, though, where the league modifiers would no have to be recalculated every season.

Any suggestions?

P.S. I own the book and re-read it often, but I always stop at the 7th chapter. The 8th chapter is too confusing and silly. The end of the 7th chapter is the perfect end of the book, in my opinion.

Deer Editor,

why do teams score so much runs this season? There are so much runs, when my big brother takes me to the ball game, we both loose count of the score, because none of us can count so far! And my big brother is 15 years old and went to school four fore years! It is so confoosing!

Can the men in the league office do some thing about it to make the games easier to follow again?

Wary sincereful,

Billy Hawthorne III, 8 years old

I am afraid you will get your wish, but not until next season and I bet you will wish you hadn't wished what you wished.

Ben Spencer (26-4.2) is ready to play, so RF George Loverde (27-4.8) is on his way back to Syracuse. Spencer, who was starting before he got injured, will sit on the bench for now.

Boston Red Caps (37-35 .514 9 GB in 3rd place in the Liberty League) at
Detroit Wolverines (47-27 .635 1st place)

William Little, Bos. (26-6.0) (R 15-14 4.09 10.2-2.6-3.7 H-BB-K/9) vs. Lou Townley, Det. (25-3.4) (R 22-8 2.57 8.9-1.3-3.7).

C Tom Trever (24-4.7) makes his major league debut today. He is not much of a defender, but can run like the wind and hopefully hit some.

Won - 5 to 1

Townley's 6th straight exceptional start! And not only that, he hit a home run! We also turned 3 double-plays.

Townley allowed 7 hits, no walks and struck out 2.

Little gave us 9 hits, 2 walks and struck out 2. At bat, he had a hit and an RBI.

We made 1 error and Boston made 2.

3B Sam Boullion (27-4.8) had 2 hits and a walk, stole a base and had an RBI. 2B AL Shaffer (27-5.6) has a sore shoulder and will have to sit another week. I am very tired of all these injuries. CF Fred Bianco (28-6.9) had 2 hits with a triple and a walk, stole a base, scored a run and had an RBI. C Tom Trever had a hit in his debut and did not embarrass himself behind the plate.

Liberty League:

Louisville (8) at Cleveland (7): John Simon (27-6.6) (3-3) in relief of William McLeod (28-5.6) over Ed Pedersen (25-5.1) (13-22). McLeod had to leave in the 8th inning with a swollen shoulder and will have to rest it for a week, at least. The Bourbons scored in the top of the 9th to break the tie. Ex-Wolverine CF Pat Womack (26-6.3) knocked in the go-ahead run.

Indianapolis (5) at New York (0): Jimmy Euler (26-5.5) (9-8) over Miah Turner (26-5.3) (15-10). Euler allowed 8 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4. He has won 4 in a row. Turner allowed 9 hits, 1 walk and struck out 8. He has lost 3 of his last 4. The win cost the Hoosiers 2/3 of their outfield for a month: CF Ed Slonim (24-8.5), last year's Rookie of the Year, sprained his ankle and RF Ed Wakefield (27-5.8) messed up his thumb. Indy has won 8 in a row and are up to 5th place!

Pittsburgh (4) at Cincinnati (7): John Stevens (30-8.2) (18-14) over Whitey Mathews (24-4.1) (14-13). Stevens allowed 8 hits, 2 walks and struck out 3. 2B Bill Parsons (29-8.3) hit his 3rd home run of the season.

Grand National Association:

Omaha (2) at Providence (11): Ed Wison (26-7.3) (11-18) over Tom Lee (29-6.0) (14-11). Wison allowed 5 hits, 1 walk and struck out 3.

Here is a game to help young Billy learn his counting skills: Down in the Eastern League (A), our old Detroit ace Rufus Lee (36-3.9) made his 3rd start of the season for the Wilkes-Barre Coal Barons and it did not end well. Heck, it did not begin well either! The New Haven Blues were rather rude to him. They scored 4 runs in the 1st, 4 in the 2nd, 3 in the 3rd and 10 in the 4th, but Rufus was not around to see the end of that inning. On the day, he allowed 17 runs in 3.1 innings. But the Nutmegs were not done, though they took a hiatus until the 8th inning when they scored 5 more. All-in-all they had 26 runs in the game.

Here is one that is easier to count, Billy: Down in the Northwestern League (B), the Oshkosh Indians did not score a run and only had 1 hit off young Paul Zimmerman (21-6.1) of the Eau Claire Lumbermen by way of Konigswinter, Germany. The hit was a lead-off triple in the 8th inning, but Zimmerman kept it from scoring. He walked 3 and struck out 2. Before today he had not shown many signs of pitching talent and even after this game, his season record stands at 5-12 with a 4.98 ERA.

Liberty League:

Boston (10) at Cleveland (1): Dave Wolf (24-4.7) (10-5) over Henry Rawls (33-4.3) (10-14). Wolf allowed 5 hits, no walks and struck out 3. Rawls has lost 4 in a row. For the Spiders, SS Charlie Hale (29-4.8) strained a hamstring and will likely miss a month.

Louisville (4) at Cincinnati (13): Charlie Branham (27-4.2) (23-15) over Count Childs (31-3.1) (11-19). Rookie CF Ed Robling (24-7.3) will sit a week with a sore back.

Grand National Association:
Omaha (3) at Providence (4): Ed Wison (26-7.3) (12-18) over Lee Sprague (27-3.5) (14-22). Wison allowed 8 hits, 3 walks and struck out 3. Sprague allowed 7 hits, no walks and struck out 1.

Baltimore (5) at Brooklyn (3): Pop Yurkovich (35-6.1) (13-21) over Al Green (24-3.8) (17-18). Yurkovich allowed 7 hits, 3 walks and struck out 3.

Chicago (3) at St. Louis (4): Fred Barrow (35-4.7) (17-15) over Pat Seguin (23-4.4) (24-16). Barrow allowed 10 hits, 1 walk and struck out 5. He has won 4 of his last 5. Seguin allowed 8 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2. C Cy Morton (27-4.6) hit his 2nd home run of the season. The Terriers have won 6 in a row.

Kansas City (2) at Milwaukee (6): Zachary Buchanan (26-4.0) (19-14) over Al McClaughry (23-5.6) (23-14). Buchanan allowed 8 hits, 1 walk and struck out 7. McClaughry allowed 8 hits, 1 walk and struck out 3.

Liberty League:

Boston (7) at Cleveland (8) in 16 innings: Harry Lamb (32-6.4) (2-1) in relief of Artie Boucher (24-6.1) over Charlie Morlock (38-6.7) (11-16) in relief of William Little (26-6.0). Rookie CF Hi Bowman (23-5.5) knocked in the winning run with 2 outs. He had 4 hits with a triple, stole a base and scored 2 runs. Lamb, in 6 innings of shutout relief, allowed 2 hits, 2 walks and struck out 3. For the Red Caps, LF Charlie Warner (33-9.2) hit his 10th home run of the season. Rookie 3B Highball Baxter (21-5.7) will miss a week with a sprained finger.

Pittsburgh (7) at New York (11): Jack Roberts (35-6.1) (10-22) over Fred Horner (26-3.8) (0-3). RF Pussy Wise (26-6.8) had 4 hits with a triple and a walk, stole a base, scored 3 runs and had an RBI. CF Bert Gellis (26-5.5), the Batting Champion of 2 seasons ago, will miss 2 to 3 weeks with a hamstring strain. His replacement, Effie Hoag (29-5.5), playing in only his 2nd game of the year, fractured a finger and will miss about 2 months.

Indianapolis (12) at Cincinnati (4): Sal DeVaux (32-3.5) (13-11) over Charlie Branham (27-4.2) (23-16). DeVaux allowed 10 hits, no walks and struck out 1. He has won 7 in a row and his Hoosiers have won 9 in a row.

Grand National Association:

Omaha (0) at Providence (8): Tom Ashton (23-5.2) (1-0) in his major league debut over Lee Sprague (27-3.5) (14-23). Ashton allowed 2 hits, 3 walks and struck out 2. I cannot remember another hurler debuting with a shutout! Rookie 1B Ren Mason (21-6.9) messed up his ankle and will miss 4 to 5 weeks.

Baltimore (7) at Brooklyn (9): Ren French (26-4.9) (16-16) over Frank McSherry (32-4.1) (4-3).

Chicago (1) at St. Louis (9): Ted Ryther (33-4.3) (21-14) over Pete Rinehart (28-6.2) (10-16). Ryther allowed 8 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4. He is 16-4 in his last 20 decisions. The Terriers, in their 1st season of existence, have won 7 in a row and now sit atop the GNA standings all alone.

Kansas City (6) at Milwaukee (7) in 10 innings: Freddy Wood (31-6.3) (19-16) over Dave Hendrich (24-6.0) (2-2) in relief of Lew Burnett (26-4.5). The winning run scored on a passed ball. In 10 innings, Wood allowed 9 hits, 4 walks and struck out 6. RF Ed Capps (24-6.1) hit his league-leading 8th home run of the season. For the Cowboys, RF Tommy Dyer (29-3.8) hit his 3rd.

Elmer Higgins (41-6.4) has his Bourbons in town to begin a 2 game series today. It was supposed to be a 3 game series, but the weather was not nice yesterday. We are 7-3 against them so far this season and swept them in a 3 game series in Louisville almost a month ago the last time we met. They are 4th in the League in runs scored with 6.3 per game (Detroit is still 7th with 6.0). They are 3rd in runs allowed with 6.2 per game (Detroit is still #1 with 4.8).

Louisville Bourbons (38-39 .494 11 GB in 4th place in the Liberty League) at
Detroit Wolverines (48-27 .640 1st place)

Sammy Berry, Lou. (27-5.5) (R 6-5 5.09 13.1-3.5-1.5 H-BB-K/9) vs. Lou Townley, Det. (25-3.4) (R 23-8 2.52 8.9-1.3-3.7).

We get a little lucky and will miss William McLeod (28-5.6) this series because he is hurting.

Won - 6 to 2

Townley's 6th straight win falls just short of being his 7th straight exceptional outing.

Townley allowed 7 hits, 2 walks and struck out 3. At bat, he had a hit and a walk and an RBI.

Berry gave us 10 hits, 3 walks and struck out 4 (3 of them RF Ben Smith (28-6.7)). At bat, he hit a double.

We made 2 errors and Louisville made 1.

LF Al Lewis (22-9.1) led off the bottom of the first with his 3rd home run of the season and hit a triple the next time up, but my fancies of a reverse order cycle did not come to fruition. He scored twice and threw a runner out at home. RF Ben Smith hit his 8th home run of the year. He is now safely out-hitting last season's stats, though still a long ways from his MVP season of the year before. CF Fred Bianco (28-6.9) had 2 hits and a walk, stole 2 bases and scored 2 runs. SS Tom Nelson (22-6.6) had 2 hits. 2B Al Hartford (22-5.0) hit a 2-run home run and drew a walk and made 3 outstanding diving catches of line drives.

Liberty League:
Boston (3) at Cleveland (2): Joe Peters (31-4.9) (2-1) over Ed Pedersen (25-5.1) (13-23). Boston scored a run on an error in the top of the 9th to break the 2-2 tie. Peters allowed 8 hits, 5 walks and struck out 2. Pedersen allowed 6 hits, 5 walks and struck out 3. For the Spiders, RF Hunkey Morton (26-6.9), in only his 2nd game of the season due to recurring problems with his hamstring, broke his thumb and will miss 2 to 4 weeks.

Pittsburgh (3) at New York (4): Miah Turner (26-5.3) (16-10) over Whitey Mathews (24-4.1) (14-14). Turner allowed 7 hits, no walks and struck out 5. After New York lost 2 CF's yesterday, rookie CF Cinders Bradley (24-7.1) sprained his thumb and will miss 3 weeks. For the Puddlers, RF Ace Trimmell (29-5.0) hit his 4th home run of the season.

Indianapolis (2) at Cincinnati (1): Jimmy Euler (26-5.5) (10-8) over John Stevens (30-8.2) (18-15). Euler allowed 6 hits, 2 walks and struck out 2. At bat, he had 2 hits, scored a run and had an RBI. He has won 5 in a row and his Hoosiers have won 10 in a row and are now tied for 4th place! Stevens allowed 11 hits, 3 walks and struck out 2. For the Reds, 3B Lew Sheen (32-6.1) hit a home run.

Grand National Association:
Omaha (4) at Providence (2): Tom Lee (29-6.0) (15-11) over Tom Ashton (23-5.2) (1-1). Lee allowed 6 hits, 3 walks and struck out 6. Ashton allowed 7 hits, 3 walks and struck out 3. For the Grays, RF John Froom (38-6.2) sprained his thumb and will miss 5 days or so (it was a bad day for thumbs all around).

Baltimore (3) at Brooklyn (6): William David (24-3.6) (8-5) over Bill McGee (29-7.9) (3-3). David allowed 8 hits, 1 walk and struck out 4. McGee allowed 4 hits, 4 walks and struck out 1. RF Tom Campbell (29-3.6) hit his 6th home run of the season. For the Orioles, rookie 2B Kitty Covington (22-5.4) had 3 hits, stole 4 bases and scored a run. Original Haymaker LF John Hagadorn (37-6.3) pulled a hamstring and will miss at least a month.

Chicago (6) at St. Louis (2): Pat Seguin (23-4.4) (25-16) over Con Arnold (23-6.3) (6-7). Seguin allowed 8 hits, 3 walks and struck out 1. He is 16-4 in his last 20 decisions. Arnold had to leave in the 7th inning with a sore ankle and should take about 5 days to recover.

Kansas City (1) at Milwaukee (2): Zachary Buchanan (26-4.0) (20-14) over Lew Burnett (26-4.5) (20-19). Buchanan allowed 7 hits, 1 walk and struck out 5. He has won his last 5 decisions. Burnett allowed 8 hits, 1 walk and struck out 3.

Grand National Association:

Baltimore (5) at Brooklyn (4) in 13 innings: Pop Yurkovich (35-5.6) (14-21) over Al Green (24-3.8) (17-19). The go-ahead run reached base via an error and scored on a long fly out. In 12.1 innings, Yurkovich allowed 8 hits, 3 walks and struck out 3. After he gave up a 1-out single in the bottom of the 13th, rookie Ed Price (23-5.7) came in and promptly gave up a single, but then got the next two batters out to preserve the win. In 13 innings, Green allowed 9 hits, 6 walks and struck out 7. He has now lost 6 of his last 7 decisions.

Kansas City (14) at St. Louis (3): Al McClaughry (23-5.6) (24-14) over Fred Barrow (35-4.7) (17-16). McClaughry allowed 4 hits, 1 walk and struck out 4. 2B Jim McCarthy (26-7.5), in his 1st game after missing almost 3 weeks with an injury, had 4 hits with a triple, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs.

Chicago (8) at Milwaukee (6): Pony Stanley (24-6.2) (12-8) in relief of Pat Seguin (23-4.4) over Wiley Steel (25-5.6) (7-11). In 5 innings, Seguin only allowed 3 hits and a run, but had to leave when he got beaned at bat. His bruised shoulder should keep him out of action for 5 or so days. LF Washington Macho (38-8.3) will sit right by Seguin for 5 days with a sore ankle.

Manager Bill Shell (43-6.3) has his red hot smokin' Hoosiers in town today to begin a 3 game series. They have won 11 games in a row and since Shell took over they are 17-3 and have climbed from the basement all the way up to 4th place. We are 7-3 against them on the year, but the last time we met they beat us 2 of 3 in Indianapolis with Shell in charge. That was the last time Lou Townley lost a game (the last time the Hoosiers lost a game, too). They are 3rd in the League in scoring with 6.4 runs per game (Detroit is up to 6th with 5.9!). They are dead last in runs allowed with 7.1 per game. In Shell's 1st game as manager, they lost to New York, 17 to 2. Since then though, they have only allowed 3.4 runs per game. (Detroit is still #1 with 4.8).

We have brought C Jack Henderson (27-4.5) up from Syracuse to join our catching corps. He's a good receiver, but a light hitter, though he has a good eye as a batter, but he cannot out-run my pet 3-legged box turtle.

Indianapolis Hoosiers (39-40 .494 12 GB in 4th place in the Liberty League) at
Detroit Wolverines (50-27 .649 1st place)

Jimmy Euler, Ind. (26-5.5) (R 10-8 2.95 9.1-3.8-2.6 H-BB-K/9) vs. Lou Townley, Det. (25-3.4) (R 24-8 2.50 8.8-1.3-3.6).

Euler has won 5 in a row and has only given up 1 run total in his last 2 starts.

Won - 5 to 4 in 11 innings

SS Jake Steitz (28-4.7) led the game off with a home run over our right field fence. 2B Al Hartford (22-5.0) ended the game with a 2-out single.

In 11 innings, Townley allowed 4 hits, 1 walk and struck out 6.

Euler gave us 11 hits, 2 walks and struck out 5. At bat, he had a hit.

We made 3 errors and Indianapolis made 4.

LF Al Lewis (22-9.1) had 2 hits with a triple and scored a run. 3B Sam Boullion (27-4.8) had 2 hits, stole a base and had an RBI, but made 2 errors in the 8th inning to help them score 3 runs. 1B George House (28-4.3) had 2 hits, scored 2 runs, including the winning one, and had an RBI. SS Tom Nelson (21-6.6) had 2 hits with a double and a walk, stole a base and scored a run.

Liberty League:

Pittsburgh (9) at Cleveland (2): Fred Horner (26-3.8) (1-3) over Ed Pedersen (25-5.1) (13-24). Horner allowed 8 hits, 4 walks and struck out 1. For the Spiders, rookie RF Tom Steiner (21-4.9) has a sore foot that will keep him out of action for the next month.

Boston (3) at New York (5): Miah Turner (26-5.3) (17-10) over Dave Wolf (24-4.7) (10-6). Turner allowed 11 hits, 1 walk and struck out 4. Wolf allowed 5 hits, 2 walks and struck out 5. Boston made 6 errors to none for New York. 2B Bill Baker (25-3.6) hit his 3rd home run of the season.

Louisville (9) at Cincinnati (6): Sammy Berry (27-5.5) (7-6) over John Stevens (30-8.2) (18-16). For the Reds, manager/LF Silver Borresen (33-6.9) had 4 hits and a walk and scored 3 runs. The Reds have lost 4 in a row at the same time that we have won 4 in a row and our lead is now 7 games!

Grand National Association:
Providence (8) at Brooklyn (1): Tom Ashton (23-5.2) (2-1) over William David (24-3.6) (8-6). Ashton allowed 8 hits, no walks and struck out 2. After 3 starts, his career ERA is 0.67. Brooklyn made 10 errors.

Kansas City (9) at St. Louis (4): Al McClaughry (23-5.6) (25-14) over Jimmy Richards (24-0.9) (3-1). McClaughry allowed 9 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2. RF Tommy Dyer (29-3.8) hit his 3rd home run of the year.

Chicago (5) at Milwaukee (9): Freddy Wood (31-6.3) (20-16) over Pete Rinehart (28-6.2) (10-17). At bat, Wood hit 2 triples, scored a run and had 2 RBIs.

QuestDog,

After digging a bit, I can across your thread about the UBA. Are those logos and jerseys available anywhere?

Thank you.

Indianapolis Hoosiers (39-41 .487 13 GB tied for 4th place in the Liberty League) at
Detroit Wolverines (51-27 .654 1st place)

Levi Giddens, Ind. (35-4.8) (R 1-2 6.93 14.2-3.3-1.8 H-BB-K/9) vs. Al Rice, Det. (22-7.6) (R 7-4 3.06 9.7-1.4-3.1).

Euler has won 5 in a row and has only given up 1 run total in his last 2 starts.

Won - 3 to 2

Once again, Rice started out shaky, allowing 2 runs in the 1st inning, but again he got stingy after that and shut them out the rest of the way.
C Jack Henderson (27-4.5) made his major league debut today. In his first trip to the plate, he came up in the bottom of the 2nd inning with runners on 1st and 3rd and 2 outs already recorded. The 1st pitch was a ball. The 2nd pitch was over the plate and Henderson swung and blasted one to straight away center and over the fence to put us up 3 to 2 and end the scoring for the day.

Rice allowed 8 hits, 1 walk and struck out 4.

Giddens gave us 5 hits, 2 walks and struck out 3. At bat, he had 2 hits.

We made no errors and Indianapolis made 1.

Other than Henderson, nobody did much at the plate for us.

Liberty League:

Pittsburgh (3) at Cleveland (4): Ed Pedersen (25-5.1) (14-24) over Whitey Mathews (24-4.1) (15-15). Pedersen allowed 7 hits, 1 walk and struck out 3. Mathews allowed 8 hits, 2 walks and struck out 3. For the Puddlers, C Bumpus Dowdy (37-7.2) hit his 4th home run of the season.

Boston (13) at New York (6): Dave Wolf (24-4.7) (11-6) over Jack Roberts (35-6.1) (10-24). 2B Mike Stables (31-7.1), last year's MVP, had 3 hits with a double and his 6th home run of the year, scored 2 runs and had 4 RBIs. SS John Ingling (27-4.6) pulled a muscle and will miss a week or two.

Louisville (12) at Cincinnati (7): William McLeod (28-5.6) (19-12) over Charlie Branham (27-4.2) (23-18). For the Reds, C Cliff Robinson (29-6.1) hit his 2nd home run of the season. Cincinnati scored the 1st 6 runs of the game. The Reds have now lost 5 in a row while we have won 5 in a row and out lead is now 8 games!

Grand National Association:
Providence (3) at Brooklyn (6): Al Green (24-3.8) (18-19) over Ed Hodges (27-3.2) (9-23). Green allowed 8 hits, 1 walk and struck out 3. C Billy Boblett (29-5.4) hit his 5th home run of the season and rookie 3B Ed Cheney (23-7.8) hit his 3rd. For the Grays, RF Sy Cullum (24-5.9) hurt his shoulder and will miss about 5 weeks.

Omaha (5) at Baltimore (2): Tom Lee (29-6.0) (16-11) over Pop Yurkovich (35-5.6) (14-22). Lee allowed 5 hits, 5 walks and struck out 2. Yurkovich allowed 5 hits, 5 walks and struck out 3. Editor's Note: This was Yurky's 325th loss of his major league career. In real baseball, no one had that many. Cy Young (316) and Jim Galvin (310) are the only two over 300 and they both won more than they lost. Yurkovich has 245 wins.

Kansas City (20) at St. Louis (6): Al McClaughry (23-5.6) (26-14) over Fred Barrow (35-4.7) (17-17). The Terriers were in 1st place until the Cowboys came to town and utterly destroyed them in 4 straight. Only one of the games was lost by fewer than 10 runs. Kansas City out-scored St. Louis, 59-16 in the series. St. Louis used 4 pitchers. Barrow only went 3 innings and left with a sore heal. He only gave up 1 run and should be fine in a day or two. Con Arnold (23-6.3) gave up 16 runs in 4.2 innings of relief. The only pitcher to strike out a batter for St. Louis is no pitcher, but RF Sandy O'Connor (37-4.2), who pitched the final inning and struck out 2. He did allow 2 runs, though only 1 was earned. C Gene Stone (30-5.4) of the Cowboys had 3 hits with a double and a walk, scored 4 runs and had 2 RBIs. Rookie CF Heinie Ashmore (22-6.0) had 4 hits with a double and a walk, stole a base, scored 4 runs and had 3 RBIs.

Chicago (7) at Milwaukee (8): Zachary Buchanan (26-4.0) (21-14) over Pony Stanley (24-6.2) (12-9). 3B Dave Gray (26-4.9) hit 2 home runs to give him 5 on the season. !!For the Colts, RF Tom Megrath hit for the cycle, scored 2 runs and had 4 RBIs!! He is the 2nd player to hit for the cycle in the GNA. Detroit's Ben Smith (28-6.7) did it in 1884 while playing for the now-defunct Philadelphia Quakers.

Indianapolis Hoosiers (39-42 .481 14 GB in 5th place in the Liberty League) at
Detroit Wolverines (52-27 .658 1st place)

Sal DeVaux, Ind. (32-3.5) (R 14-11 4.31 10.0-3.9-2.3 H-BB-K/9) vs. Dave Frazier, Det. (27-5.7) (L 7-4 2.01 8.0-2.2-2.6).

Our old teammate DeVaux has won 8 starts in a row and has an ERA of 3.21 during the stretch. In his last 4 starts, his ERA is 2.25. He beat us 2 to 1 the last time we faced him.

Won - 4 to 3

Up by only a run, Frazier walked the lead-off batter in the 9th inning. The next batter then tried to lay down a bunt, but failed and instead hit one down into the right field corner. RF Ben Smith (28-6.7) quickly retrieved the ball, however, and gunned it to the cut-off man, 2B Al Hartford (22-5.0) who fired it home to nail the runner at the plate. The batter tried to take 3rd base on the throw and C Tom Trever (24-4.7) fired it to 3rd to complete the double-play and clear the bases of all offending Hoosiers! Frazier then got the final batter to fly out and we had dodged a bullet!

Frazier allowed 7 hits, 3 walks and struck out 6. None of the runs he allowed were earned, so his League-leading ERA is now at 1.82! At bat, he had a hit, but also grounded into a double-play and for some reason decided to try to steal 3rd base. He was not even close to being successful in this enterprise. He is not in any way shape or form a decent base-runner.

DeVaux gave us 7 hits, 2 walks and struck out 3. At bat, he hit a double and a triple and scored a run.

Each team made 3 errors.

RF Ben Smith had 2 hits with his 9th home run of the season and 2 RBIs. CF Ben Spencer (26-4.2) is our latest marcher in the injury parade. He sprained his thumb and will miss 2 weeks. I sent word to Syracuse for RF George Loverde (27-4.8) to return to Detroit.

Liberty League:
Pittsburgh (5) at Cleveland (10): Artie Boucher (24-6.1) (6-7) over Fred Horner (26-3.8) (1-4). SS Jesse Flanders (27-5.4) had 4 hits with a double, stole 2 bases, scored 3 runs and had 4 RBIs.

Boston (3) at New York (6): Miah Turner (26-5.3) (18-10) over William Little (26-6.0) (16-16). Turner allowed 10 hits, no walks and struck out 2. Little allowed 8 hits, no walks and struck out 3.

Louisville (10) at Cincinnati (9): Count Childs (31-3.1) (12-20) over Dan Burton (32-4.9) (2-2). SS Freddy Parsley (27-7.5) had 3 hits with a double, scored 2 runs and had 4 RBIs. For the Reds, C John Whelan (26-4.6) and 3B Lew Sheen (32-6.1) each hit their 2nd home run of the season. Cincinnati has now lost 6 in a row while we have won 6 in a row and our lead is now 9 games!

Grand National Association:
Brooklyn (3) at Baltimore (10): Frank McSherry (32-4.1) (5-4) over Ren French (26-4.9) (17-17). McSherry allowed 5 hits, 4 walks and struck out no one. 3B Phil Lane (27-7.4) had 2 hits with his 6th home run of the year and 5 RBIs.

Providence (5) at Omaha (6): Lee Sprague (27-3.5) (16-23) over Tom Ashton (23-5.2) (2-2). SS Ed Aldrich (23-6.8) had 4 hits with a double, stole 3 bases, scored 3 runs and had 2 RBIs.

Kansas City (2) at Chicago (5): Pete Rinehart (28-6.2) (11-17) over Lew Burnett (26-4.5) (21-20). Rinehart allowed 4 hits, 2 walks and struck out 1. C Walt Wilson (27-5.2) had 2 hits with his 4th home run of the season and 4 RBIs.

Manager Hi Lynch (36-7.5) has his Gothams in town today to begin a 3 game series. They are the only team we have a losing record against this season, going 6-7 versus them so far. We split 4 games in New York 3 weeks ago the last time we met. They are 7th in scoring with 5.9 runs per game (Detroit is 6th with 5.9). They are 7th in runs allowed with 7.0 per game (Detroit is #1 with 4.7, over a run better than #2).

New York Gothams (35-44 .443 17.5 GB in 6th place in the Liberty League) at
Detroit Wolverines (53-27 .662 1st place)

Jack Roberts, N.Y. (35-6.1) (R 10-24 5.46 11.7-3.8-2.4 H-BB-K/9) vs. Lou Townley, Det. (25-3.4) (R 25-8 2.44 8.6-1.3-3.7).

Roberts may look like easy meat at a glance, but we are 2-4 against him so far. We did beat him up pretty well the last time we faced him, though, winning 9 to 3.

Won - 16 to 7

We scored 13 runs in the 1st 2 innings, aided greatly by 7 Gotham errors in the 2 frames.

Townley allowed 8 hits, 3 walks and struck out 4. At bat, he hit 2 doubles, scored 3 runs and had 2 RBIs.

We had 13 hits and made 1 error. New York made 9.

LF Al Lewis (22-9.1) had a hit and a walk, stole a base and scored 2 runs. 3B Sam Boullion (27-4.8) had 2 hits and 2 RBIs. CF Fred Bianco (28-6.9) had 3 hits, stole a base, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs. RF Ben Smith (28-6.7) had 3 hits with 2 triples, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. 1B George House (28-4.3) did not have a hit, but walked once and got hit by a pitch, stole a base, scored 3 runs and had an RBI. SS Tom Nelson (21-6.6) had 2 hits with a double, scored 2 runs and had an RBI.

For the Gothams, rookie CF Fred James (23-5.3) had 4 hits with his 4th home run of the season, scored 2 runs and had 3 RBIs.

Grand National Association:

Brooklyn (7) at Baltimore (6): William David (24-3.6) (9-6) over Bill McGee (29-7.9) (3-4). McSherry allowed 5 hits, 4 walks and struck out no one. 3B Phil Lane (27-7.4) had 2 hits with his 6th home run of the year and 5 RBIs.

Providence (5) at Omaha (3): Tom Ashton (23-5.2) (3-2) over Tom Lee (29-6.0) (2-2). Ashton allowed 6 hits, 1 walk and struck out 5. Lee allowed 10 hits, 1 walk and struck out 5. CF Al Young (23-4.8) hit a home run. For the Mutuals, RF Abe Cupp (26-4.7) hit his 4th home run of the year.

Milwaukee (4) at St. Louis (6): Ted Ryther (33-4.3) (22-15) over Freddy Wood (31-6.3 (20-17).

Kansas City (15) at Chicago (6): Lew Burnett (26-4.5) (22-20) over Pony Stanley (24-6.2) (12-10). SS Al Sarbacker (26-4.8) had 4 hits with a double and scored 2 runs. 2B Jim McCarthy (26-7.5) had hit a triple and 2 home runs and had 5 RBIs. For the Colts, CF Jimmy Cast (22-3.6) hit a home run.

These Wolfpacks. Do they think a modest, everyday 9-4-2-5 DP is good enough to get the fans going?
