We are in Louisville today to begin a 3 game series with manager Elmer Higgins (41-6.4) and his surprising Bourbons. We are 4-3 against them so far and we split 4 games in Detroit the last time we met, which was just shy of 2 weeks ago. They are 3rd in the League in scoring with 6.6 runs per game (Detroit is still last with 6.1). They are 3rd in runs allowed with 6.3 per game (Detroit is still #1 with 5.1). Eclipse Park is very nice to hitters as long as they do not try to hit it over the right field fence.

Detroit Wolverines (37-20 .649 1st place in the Liberty League) at
Louisville Bourbons (30-28 .517 7.5 GB in 3rd place)

I have sent Joe Kraus (30-7.9) to Syracuse to try to work out whatever is wrong with him. He has not hit all that well in either of the past two seasons, but he has played great defense anyways. But since coming back from this last injury, he has not hit at all and his defense has suffered as well. He has made 7 errors in 23 games. LF Sy Geller (28-5.7) has come from Syracuse to sit on our bench. Al Lewis (21-9.1) will move back to left, Ben Smith (28-6.7) will move to right and Ben Spencer (26-4.2) will get a trial in center.

Detroit Wolverines (39-20 .661 1st place in the Liberty League) at
Louisville Bourbons (30-30 .500 9.5 GB in 3rd place)

Lou Townley, Det. (25-3.4) (R 17-6 3.00 9.5-1.4-3.4 H-BB-K/9) vs. Count Childs, Lou. (31-3.1) (R 9-13 4.38 9.2-4.2-3.1)

Won - 10 to 7 in 10 innings

Our 1st extra-inning win of the season! In the top of the 10th, 1B George House (28-4.3) hit a 2-run inside-the-park home run to put us up. The next batter, C Jimmy Babcock (30-6.9) hit one over the fence for his 2nd home run of the year.

Townley allowed 11 hits, 3 walks and struck out 2. At bat, he had a hit and a walk and scored a run.

Childs gave us 15 hits, 5 walks and struck out no one.

We made 4 errors and Louisville made 5.

LF Al Lewis (21-9.1) bruised his foot and will be limping for about a week. SS John Powers (34-6.2) had a hit and 2 walks, stole a base and scored 2 runs. In the field he handled 13 clean chances, but flubbed his 14th try. RF Ben Smith (28-6.7) had 3 hits with a double, stole 2 bases and had 3 RBIs. 1B George House had 2 hits with a triple and the home run, drew a walk, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs. Cincinnati (9) at Pittsburgh (4): John Stevens (30-8.2) (16-9) over Whitey Mathews (24-4.1) (10-11). For the Puddlers, 3B Adam Trombley (33-6.8), an ex-Red, hit his 2nd home run of the year. Pittsburgh has lost 5 in a row.

Cleveland (11) at Boston (2): Artie Boucher (24-6.1) (4-1) over Charlie Morlock (38-6.7) (8-15). Boucher allowed 10 hits, 2 walks and struck out 5. Morlock has lost 5 in a row. Grand National Association:

Baltimore (8) at Kansas City (9): Lew Burnett (26-4.5) (17-12) over Pop Yurkovich (35-5.6) (10-17). I think we can quit hoping that Yurky will ever have a winning season. Brooklyn (8) at St. Louis (7): Ren French (26-4.9) (13-12) over Con Arnold (23-6.3) (4-6). St. Louis scored 3 times in the bottom of the 9th, but came up inches short when CF James McClellan's (29-4.7) blast was caught up against the center field fence.

Providence (10) at Chicago (13): Pete Rinehart (28-6.2) (8-11) over Ed Wison (26-7.3) (8-15). Providence out-hit Chicago 17 to 11, but their pitchers walked 10 batters. CF Tommy Casale (27-3.7) had 2 hits with a double and a walk, scored a run and had 4 RBIs.

We are in Boston to begin a 3 game series with manager/1B Pete Bucolo (39-4.1) and his Red Caps today. Bucolo is still lame and his scheduled return is yet a week away. We are 5-2 against them so far and took 2 of 3 from them in Detroit 3 and a half weeks ago. They are 2nd in the League in runs scored with 6.7 per game (Detroit is still last with 6.1). They are 6th in runs allowed with 6.8 per game (Detroit is still #1 with 5.0). Boston's South End Grounds is favoring the pitchers a bit this year.

Detroit Wolverines (40-20 .667 1st place in the Liberty League) at
Boston Red Caps (29-31 .483 11 GB in 4th place)

Al Rice, Det. (22-7.6) (R 5-0 2.00 8.8-1.0-3.2 H-BB-K/9) vs. Charlie Morlock, Bos. (38-6.7) (R 8-15 4.25 11.2-2.4-2.6).

Morlock has lost 5 in a row, but the last time he won was the last time he faced us.

Lost - 5 to 4

We turned 3 double-plays, but 2 errors and a passed ball in the bottom of the 2nd gave them 3 runs.

Rice allowed 7 hits, 2 walks and struck out no one in his 1st loss of his career.

Morlock gave us 9 hits, no walks and struck out 2. At bat, he had a hit.

We made 3 errors and Boston made 4.

1B George House (28-4.3) had 2 hits with a double and scored a run. C Jimmy Babcock (30-6.9) had 3 hits, scored a run and had an RBI.

For the Red Caps, CF Pat Stafford (26-5.4) had 2 hits with an inside-the-park home run, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs. He now has 12 home runs on the season. Against us, he has 6 hits with 3 for home runs.

Liberty League:
Cleveland (1) at Louisville (10): William McLeod (28-5.6) (16-9) over Artie Boucher (24-6.1) (4-2). McLeod allowed 4 hits, 2 walks and struck out 2.

New York (3) at Pittsburgh (0): Jack Roberts (35-6.1) (7-18) over Tom Lilly (27-6.4) (9-12). Roberts allowed 10 hits, no walks and struck out 1. Roberts is 3-2 in his last 6 starts with 2 shutouts. Lilly allowed 5 hits, 1 walk and struck out 4. Lilly has lost 5 of his last 6 decisions. The Puddlers have now lost 7 in a row.

Cincinnati (3) at Indianapolis (11): Jimmy Euler (26-5.5) (5-6) over Charlie Branham (27-4.2) (18-12). Euler allowed 7 hits, 4 walks and struck out no one. CF Ed Slonim (24-8.5) hit a home run.

Grand National Association:

Omaha (2) at Kansas City (3): Al McClaughry (23-5.6) (19-12) over Lee Sprague (27-3.5) (14-18). McClaughry allowed 4 hits, 1 walk and struck out 1. Sprague allowed 9 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2.

Baltimore (15) at Milwaukee (2): Frank McSherry (32-4.1) (1-0) over Zachary Buchanan (26-4.0) (15-14). McSherry, in his season debut, allowed 9 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4. 3B Phil Lane (26-7.4) hit a double and a bases-loaded home run in a 9-run 4th inning, drew a walk and scored 2 runs.

Providence (4) at St. Louis (3): Ed Wison (26-7.3) (9-15) over Fred Barrow (35-4.7) (13-14). Wison allowed 4 hits, 5 walks and struck out no one. For the Terriers, rookie LF Pat Matthews (24-5.1) hit his 2nd home run of the season.

Brooklyn (4) at Chicago (3): Al Green (24-3.8) (16-13) over Pat Seguin (23-4.4) (20-13). Green allowed 7 hits, 2 walks and struck out 2. At bat, he hit a triple and scored a run. Seguin allowed 6 hits, 1 walk and struck out 7. RF Tom Campbell (29-3.6) hit his 3rd home run of the year. LF Monte Moody (29-6.9) will miss the next 3 weeks with a strained hamstring. For the Colts, rookie 1B Tom Jackson (23-5.8) went hitless, ending his streak at 20 games.

Detroit Wolverines (40-21 .656 1st place in the Liberty League) at
Boston Red Caps (30-31 .492 10 GB in 4th place)

Lou Townley, Det. (25-3.4) (R 18-6 2.95 9.6-1.5-3.3 H-BB-K/9) vs. Dave Wolf, Bos. (24-4.7) (R 8-4 3.08 9.6-1.9-3.2).

Lost - 4 to 3 in 10 innings

With 2 outs, 2B Mike Stables (31-7.1) singled home the winning run.

Townley allowed 11 hits, 2 walks and struck out 5.

Wolf gave us 6 hits (all singles), 2 walks and struck out 5.

We made 5 errors and Boston made 4.

3B Sam Boullion (27-4.8) had 2 hits and a walk, but was thrown out stealing twice. CF Ben Spencer (26-4.2) had 2 hits, stole 3 bases, scored 2 runs and had an RBI.

For the Red Caps, SS John Ingling (27-4.6) had 3 hits with a double, scored a run and had an RBI. CF Pat Stafford (26-5.4) had 3 hits, stole 3 bases, scored the winning run and had an RBI.

Liberty League:
Cleveland (5) at Louisville (3): Ed Pedersen (25-5.1) (10-18) over Count Childs (31-3.1) (9-15). Pedersen allowed 5 hits, 1 walk and struck out 3.

New York (8) at Pittsburgh (1): Miah Turner (26-5.3) (13-7) over Tom Adams (33-6.0) (5-8). Turner allowed 5 hits, 3 walks and struck out 5. The Puddlers have now lost 8 in a row.

Cincinnati (7) at Indianapolis (10): Sal DeVaux (32-3.5) (8-11) over John Stevens (30-8.2) (16-10). C Fred Smith (32-6.8) hit his 4th home run of the season. Go Hoosiers! They are keeping us in 1st place for the moment.

Grand National Association:

Omaha (22) at Kansas City (7): Tom Lee (29-6.0) (13-7) over Lew Burnett (26-4.5) (17-14). LF Fred Negus (23-6.7) hit a double and 2 triples, drew 2 walks, scored 5 runs and had an RBI. 1B Tom Anglin (34-5.6) had 3 hits, scored 4 runs and had 5 RBIs. SS Ed Aldrich (23-6.8) had 4 hits with 2 triples, scored 2 runs and had 5 RBIs. 3B Billy Little (34-3.6) had 2 hits with a double and 4 RBIs. Rookie 2B Ed Petrarca (26-5.2) had 4 hits with a triple, scored 2 runs and had 4 RBIs. For Kansas City, RF Jimmy Harrison (25-5.4) had 4 hits with a double and scored a run. The Cowboys used a record 4 pitchers in the game. P Dan Butler (30-4.7) will miss 3 to 4 weeks with a sore elbow. As he has walked 15 batters in 18.1 innings, I think the Cowboys won't be missing him much.

Baltimore (6) at Milwaukee (12): Freddy Wood (31-6.3) (15-14) over Pop Yurkovich (35-5.6) (10-18). Rookie 3B Ed Nelson (22-4.6) hit his 3rd home run of the year.

Providence (5) at St. Louis (15): Con Arnold (23-6.3) (5-6) over Bill Henson (30-6.5) (4-13). Arnold allowed 9 hits, 3 walks and struck out 4. Henson walked 10 in 7 innings. RF George Kunz (34-5.7) had 3 hits, scored 4 runs and had 2 RBIs. For the Grays, RF Joe Turner (27-6.6), their big pre-season acquisition, wrenched his neck and knocked his noggin and will be out for at least 10 months.

Brooklyn (10) at Chicago (7): William David (24-3.6) (6-2) over Pete Rinehart (28-6.2) (8-12). David allowed 7 hits, 7 walks and struck out 7. For the Colts, RF Candy Simpson (28-6.8) hit his 4th home run of the year.

Our game with the Red Caps was rained out today.

Liberty League:

Cleveland (3) at Louisville (2): Ed Pedersen (25-5.1) (11-18) over William McLeod (28-5.6) (16-10). Pedersen allowed 8 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2. McLeod allowed 11 hits, 1 walk and struck out 6. For the Bourbons, CF Pat Womack (26-6.3) hit his 3rd home run of the season. I wish I would have given them Willie Kirby (25-2.1) instead of Womack in that trade.

New York (3) at Pittsburgh (9): Ted Lilly (27-6.4) (10-12) over Jack Roberts (35-6.1) (7-19). Lilly allowed 8 hits, 1 walk and struck out 5.

Cincinnati (5) at Indianapolis (1): Charlie Branham (27-4.2) (19-12) over Jimmy Euler (26-5.5) (5-7). Branham allowed 4 hits, 1 walk and struck out 1. Our lead over the Reds is now 1 game.

Grand National Association:
Kansas City (6) at Omaha (5): Al McClaughry (23-5.6) (20-12) over Lee Sprague (27-3.5) (14-19). McClaughry allowed 9 hits, 3 walks and struck out 4. Sprague allowed 9 hits, 5 walks and struck out 8.

Providence (8) at St. Louis (9): Ted Ryther (33-4.3) (17-12) over Bill Henson (30-6.5) (4-14) in relief of Ed Hodges (27-3.2). Providence scored 4 times in the top of the 9th to take the lead, but the Terriers won it with 2 runs in the bottom half of the inning. Henson issued a walk with the bases loaded to end the game.

Brooklyn (2) at Chicago (3) in 12 innings: Pat Seguin (23-4.4) (21-13) over Ren French (26-4.9) (13-14). In 12 innings, Seguin allowed 6 hits, 1 walk and struck out 6. French allowed 12 hits, 4 walks and struck out 4. Original Haymaker 1B Bill Rush (38-3.7) hit a 2-out home run to win the game. For the Gladiators, rookie CF Ed William (26-6.0) hit a home run.

We are in Indianapolis to begin a 3 game series with manager Bill Shell (43-6.3) and his Hoosiers today. Since Shell has taken over, the team has gone 4-2. We are 6-1 against them so far and we swept them 3 games 3 weeks ago in Detroit the last time we met. They are 5th in the League in scoring with 6.3 runs per game (Detroit is still last with 6.0). They are last in runs allowed with 8.0 per game (Detroit is still 1st with 5.0). Their Seventh Street Park is probably the fairest place to play a ball game in the League. Home runs are easier to come by to left than they are to right.

Detroit Wolverines (40-22 .645 1st place in the Liberty League) at
Indianapolis Hoosiers (26-39 .400 15.5 GB in 8th (last) place)

Lou Townley, Det. (25-3.4) (R 18-7 2.90 9.6-1.5-3.4 H-BB-K/9) vs. Sal DeVaux, Ind. (32-3.5) (R 8-11 4.76 10.5-4.5-2.6).

We are 2-0 against our old teammate, DeVaux, scoring in double digits both times.

Lost - 2 to 1

Our 3rd straight loss and all by 1 run. We scored 8 total runs in the 3 games.

Townley allowed 4 hits, no walks and struck out 3. At bat, he had a hit.

DeVaux gave us 6 hits, 3 walks and struck out 3. At bat, he had a hit and scored a run.

We made 1 error and Indianapolis made 3.

3B Sam Boullion (27-4.8) had 2 hits and a walk, but for the 2nd game in a row had nothing to show for it. CF Ben Spencer (26-4.2) is our latest victim of the injury plague. He injured his thumb and will be out a couple of weeks. I sent for RF George Loverde (27-4.8) to take his spot. We are scraping the bottom of the barrel here, but I refuse to call up Kirby or Panozzo and I don't want Kraus back until (if) he starts hitting. 2B Al Hartford (22-5.0) hit a triple and drew 2 walks and had an RBI.

For the Hoosiers, RF Ed Wakefield (27-5.8) knocked in both of their runs with a double.

Thus, we have completed the 1st half of our schedule.

Liberty League:
New York (9) at Louisville (4): Miah Turner (26-5.3) (14-7) over Count Childs (31-3.1) (9-16). Turner allowed 9 hits, no walk and struck out 4. Rookie C Charlie Harris (26-5.9) hit a home run. 3B Ed Glass (28-4.5) hit his 3rd home run of the season.

Cincinnati (3) at Boston (9): William Little (26-6.0) (13-12) over John Stevens (30-8.2) (16-11). Little allowed 7 hits, 1 walk and struck out 4. The only thing saving our behinds right now is that the Reds have gone cold the same as us. They have lost 3 of their last 4.

Grand National Association:

Milwaukee (6) at Brooklyn (4): Tommy Shearin (29-5.7) (1-0) in relief of Freddy Wood (31-6.3) over Al Green (24-3.8) (16-14). Wood only pitched 1 inning because he hit a double and hurt his hip sliding. He will be fine in a day or two. For the Gladiators, rookie SS Ed Cheney (23-7.8) hit his 2nd home run of the season. 2B Joe Henry (35-9.2) hit his 4th.

Kansas City (16) at Omaha (14): Lew Burnett (26-4.5) (18-14) over Tom Lee (29-6.0) (13-8). 44 hits in this one! There were only 4 scoreless half-innings. 1B Gus Sugar (35-4.6) had 4 hits, scored a run and had 5 RBIs. Rookie CF Heinie Ashmore (22-6.0) had 4 hits with a double, stole a base, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. 2B Jim McCarthy (26-7.5) pulled a muscle and will miss 2 to 3 weeks. For the Mutuals, LF Fred Negus (23-6.7) had 4 hits with a double, stole a base, scored 4 runs and had 4 RBIs.

Down in the Northwestern League (B), the La Crosse Freezers whooped the Minneapolis Millers, 21 to 8. 2B Al Tyler (21-9.6) had 7 hits with 3 triples, stole a base, scored 4 runs and had 4 RBIs.

Detroit Wolverines (40-23 .635 1st place in the Liberty League) at
Indianapolis Hoosiers (27-39 .409 14.5 GB in 8th (last) place)

Al Rice, Det. (22-7.6) (R 5-1 2.04 8.7-1.2-2.7 H-BB-K/9) vs. Dad Marshall, Ind. (28-4.4) (R 5-8 6.51 12.4-4.2-2.0).

We have not faced Marshall on the season, but if we don't score a pile of runs against this guy, there is no hope. He was just recalled from London of the International League (A) where he was a less-than-impressive 4-3 with a 5.50 ERA during his exile.

Lost - 6 to 1

Our 4th straight loss. We have now scored 9 total runs in the 4 games.

After 4 innings, we had out-hit the Hoosiers, 7 to 4, but were losing 5 to 0. We had 4 of our runners thrown out on the bases (2 caught stealing, 2 by outfielders) and all 4 of Indy's hits were doubles and SS Tom Nelson (21-6.6) made 3 errors on the 1st 3 balls hit his way.

Rice allowed 10 hits, no walks and struck out 1. At bat, he had a hit.

Editor's Note: I am currently working on a top-secret project called "The Liberty League Encyclopedia". I can't say what it is about.....

But I am working on the format of some things and would like some feedback from you.

Here is something I have come up with to present a pitcher's career stats:

What do you think of it? Does it look good on your monitor? Is it legible? Is there any information I should be showing that I have forgotten? Is it too big? Too little?

Once I lock onto a format, I do not want to change it, so please let me know how I can make it better!

Thanks!

Detroit Wolverines (40-24 .625 1st place in the Liberty League) at
Indianapolis Hoosiers (28-39 .418 13.5 GB in 8th (last) place)

Lou Townley, Det. (25-3.4) (R 18-8 2.84 9.4-1.4-3.4 H-BB-K/9) vs. Jimmy Euler, Ind. (26-5.5) (R 5-7 3.76 10.0-4.1-2.4).

Won - 6 to 1

6 runs sounds like a good result, no? But that is still under the League average. And it was not our hitting that got us most of the runs; it was their fielding.

Townley allowed 9 hits, no walks and struck out 10. He is the 1st pitcher to strike out 10 this season under the new 4 strikes to get a K rule. At bat, he hit a double and drew a walk.

Euler gave us 7 hits, 4 walks and struck out 5.

We made 2 errors and Indianapolis made 4.

LF Al Lewis (21-9.1) hit an RBI triple. 3B Sam Boullion (27-4.8) walked once and scored 2 runs. RF Ben Smith (28-6.7) hit a triple, drew a walk and scored a run. 1B George House (28-4.3) had 3 hits with a double and his 2nd home run of the year, stole 2 bases (he has never stolen more than 2 in a SEASON at any level), scored 2 runs and had 3 RBIs. CF Fred Bianco (28-6.9) hit a double and scored a run.

For the Hoosiers, rookie 2B Kid Stevens (25-8.4) had 3 hits with a double.

Liberty League:
New York (5) at Louisville (6) in 10 innings: William McLeod (28-5.6) (17-10) over John Allen (29-6.4) (2-4) in relief of Miah Turner (26-5.3). New York scored a run in the top of the 10th, but the Bourbons scored twice in the bottom half to win. Rookie RF Dave Odekirk (22-6.5) hit a 2-out single to win the game. In 10 innings, McLeod allowed 8 hits, 5 walks and struck out 5. In 9 innings, Turner allowed 6 hits, no walks and struck out 4. 1B Pete Hinde (31-7.9) hurt his back and will miss 2 to 3 weeks.

Grand National Association:
Milwaukee (9) at Brooklyn (4): Zachary Buchanan (26-4.0) (17-14) over William David (24-3.6) (6-3). Buchanan allowed 7 hits, 1 walk and struck out 5. Milwaukee has won 6 in a row and Brooklyn has lost 5 in a row.

Kansas City (13) at Providence (9): Al McClaughry (23-5.6) (21-12) over Ed Wison (26-7.3) (9-16). 1B Gus Sugar (35-4.6) hit 2 home runs and had 4 RBIs. For the Grays, C John Toler (29-6.4) had 4 hits, scored 2 runs and had an RBI.

Chicago (4) at Baltimore (8): Pop Yurkovich (35-5.6) (11-19) over Pete Rinehart (28-6.2) (8-14). Yurkovich allowed 6 hits, 8 walks and struck out 4.

We are in New York City to begin a 4 game series with manager Hi Lynch (36-7.5) and his Gothams today. We are 4-5 against them on the season and lost 2 of 3 to them in Detroit in the middle of June the last time we met. They are 4th in the League in scoring with 6.3 runs per game (Detroit is still last with 5.9). They are 7th in runs allowed with 7.1 per game (Detroit is still #1 with 4.9). The Polo Grounds is being very kind to hitters this season. I hope it is kind to us.

Detroit Wolverines (41-24 .631 1st place in the Liberty League) at
New York Gothams (28-35 .444 12 GB in 6th place)

Al Rice, Det. (22-7.6) (R 5-2 2.21 9.0-1.0-2.5 H-BB-K/9) vs. Jack Roberts, N.Y. (35-6.1) (R 7-19 5.22 11.3-3.8-2.2).

We are 1-2 against Roberts this season. In July, he is 3-3 with a 2.77 ERA.

Lost - 3 to 2

New York scored 3 times in the 1st and then Rice shut them down, but it was already too late. With only 3 players from our intended lineup this season starting games now, it is no wonder we are finding it difficult to score runs, but even so, we should not be this bad. We threatened in the 8th and 9th innings, but RF Ben Smith (28-6.7) grounded into a double-play to kill the first rally and PH Evan Eckberg (31-3.5) did the same to end the game.

Rice allowed 6 hits, no walks and struck out 4. At bat, he hit a double and scored a run. After starting 5-0, he has lost his last 3.

Roberts gave us 7 hits, 3 walks and struck out 4.

Each team made 2 errors.

LF Al Lewis (21-9.1) hit a double, stole a base, scored a run and had an RBI. 1B George House (28-4.3), the only guy hitting of late, had 3 hits and an RBI.

For the Gothams, 1B John Hilliard (27-7.2) had 2 hits with his 11th home run of the season and had 2 RBIs. In his last 3 games against Detroit, he now has 4 home runs.

Liberty League:
Cincinnati (4) at Cleveland (7): Ed Pedersen (25-5.1) (12-19) over John Stevens (30-8.2) (16-12). Go Spiders! Pedersen allowed 8 hits, 2 walks and struck out 2. At bat, he had 3 hits with a triple, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. The outburst raises his season batting average to .135. He has won 3 of his last 4.

Louisville (1) at Pittsburgh (5): Whitey Mathews (24-4.1) (12-11) over Count Childs (31-3.1) (9-17). Mathews allowed 8 hits, no walks and struck out 3.

Grand National Association:
Every game in the GNA was rained out.
