Saturday, April 16, 1887 Opening Day in the Grand National Association

Editor's Note: I want to speed things up a bit and the thing that slows me down most is writing up the summaries of the games my team is not playing. So, this year we are going to cut them down to the bare minimum, reporting only the scores and the pitchers of record for every game. I'll list home runs hit, but otherwise to get a mention a player needs to have a really big day, i.e. get 4 of something. I'll also mention serious injuries to starting players and anything else I find interesting. FYI, if the player's team is not mentioned then he plays for the winning team.

Grand National Association:
Omaha (0) at Brooklyn (14): Al Green (24-3.8) (1-0) over Lee Sprague (27-3.5) (0-1). Green allowed 6 hits, 2 walks and struck out 3.

Providence (14) at Baltimore (8): Ed Hodges (26-3.2) (1-0) over Pop Yurkovich (35-5.6) (0-1). CF Al Young (23-4.8) had 3 hits with 2 doubles and 2 walks, stole a base, scored 5 runs and had 4 RBIs. For the Orioles, SS Ducky Hogan (26-5.3) pulled a hamstring and is expected to miss the next 2 months.

St. Louis (5) at Milwaukee (6): Freddy Wood (30-6.3) (1-0) over Ted Ryther (33-4.3) (0-1).

Kansas City (10) at Chicago (7): Al McClaughry (23-5.6) (1-0) over Pony Stanley (23-6.2) (0-1). For the Colts, 3B Henry Potter (33-6.4) hit a home run.

The season opens and Old Pop Yurkovich is 0-1. Some things never change.

After yesterday's practice game against Pittsburgh, Indianapolis 1B Ollie Kust (28-5.5) went fishing with an acquaintance on a lake near the sight of the game. The boat he was in capsized and he apparently did not know how to swim and he drowned. The Hoosiers had traded for Kust at the beginning of March from New York, where he had been a catcher, and he had won the starting first baseman's job this Spring.

Inclement weather washed out all the games on Sunday and the game scheduled for Monday and half of the games today.

Grand National Association:
St. Louis (8) at Milwaukee (9): Freddy Wood (30-6.3) (2-0) over Ted Ryther (33-4.3) (0-2). RF Ed Capps (24-6.1) had 3 hits with a home run, stole a base and had 5 RBIs. For St. Louis, CF James McClellan (29-4.7) had 3 hits, scored a run and had 4 RBIs.

Kansas City (5) at Chicago (3): Al McClaughry (23-5.6) (2-0) over Pony Stanley (23-6.2) (0-2). McClaughry had as many hits with his bat as he gave up with his arm. He allowed 3 hits, no walks and struck out 5. At bat, he had 3 hits, scored a run and had 2 RBIs.

The day before Opening Day, Cincinnati traded 3B Mike Green (38-6.2) to Milwaukee for P Dan Burton (31-4.9). Burton has been pitching for New Haven of the Eastern League (A) where he has not been very effective. He led the GNA in losses last season.

Also, the Kansas City Cowboys released RF Jim Oman (26-5.8) this morning. Which means the trade they made back in February with Detroit was basically to give their 2nd round Draft pick to the Wolverines for Detroit's 8th round pick. Not to mention that they threw in a slick-fielding shortstop to boot. Oman was signed by St. Louis to a minor league contract before the day was over.

Grand National Association:
Brooklyn (6) at Providence (4): Willis Kornfield (34-6.0) (1-0) over Bill Henson (30-6.5) (0-1). 3B William Abbott (29-6.5), in his season debut, had 4 hits, stole a base, scored a run and had an RBI.

Omaha (7) at Baltimore (10): Tom Wilmarth (27-5.4) (2-1) over Tom Lee (29-6.0) (2-1).

Kansas City (6) at St. Louis (9): Fred Barrow (35-4.7) (1-2) over Al McClaughry (23-5.6) (3-2). 2B Harry Robinson (28-3.3) hit a home run.

Chicago (9) at Milwaukee (1): Pat Seguin (23-4.4) (4-0) over Zachary Buchanan (26-4.0) (2-2). Seguin allowed 6 hits, 1 walk and struck out 3.
