Fielding rating disappearing overnight
I had a 29-year old third baseman whose defense went from a 6 rating to absolutely none at the position in the course of one month.
While he wasn't having the greatest season defensively, he definitely didn't completely lose his ability to field that quickly did he? |

With range of 2 (out of 10?), it's possible. Each position has minimum thresholds for component ratings in order to earn a position rating, though I don't know offhand what they are for third base.
Even if he doesn't have a position rating, he may still be able to play adequate 3B for you if you've been satisfied with him there so far. Just monitor the defensive stats.

I did see the drop in range, but he's fine on other components. I guess I'm wondering why he went so bad all at once despite not getting hurt.

He might not be much worse at all than before, but like Scudworth said, the game won't display any rating if one of the ratings is below a certain threshold.

Thanks for all the help and information. I guess the suddenness just threw me for a loop. Since my team isn't really in contention, I'll probably leave him at third base and take my lumps. My alternative would be moving my regular DH, who has ratings at all three outfield positions AND shortstop into the field and shifting my normal shortstop over to third. I'm not certain why someone would be rated for the outfield and short, but not third either. Well, aside from never playing third.

For now, with that arm, he'll probably be passable at third despite the lack of rating. Long term, he's a DH or a below average 1B (he's too short to be really good). You don't want to keep that low a range at 3B too long as every ball he doesn't get to has a decent chance to be a double.

Sadly, he's the highest paid player on my team. And his contract has three more years to go, although the last year has a vesting option, which I'm sure I can arrange for him not to meet.
I'll probably DH him starting next season. He is listed at 5'11" and 205 lbs, but I think he's been hitting the postgame spread a little too much. |

This has happened to me in the last two versions of OOTP. Adrian Beltre is an 8 (out of 10) at 3B and the next season he has a "-" at 3B.

I've read this in one other place that at 1B your height affects defense. In what OOTP version did this begin? Does his height affect the 1B rating (in addition to the other skills like range, arm and hands), or is it a defensive deduction outside of his ratings?

It will sound like an excuse but one of the issues with the current roster (opening day) set is that the development/aging feature works as designed. Beltre is 36 and OOTP faced with an instant 36 year old with zero development/aging history is going to apply skill reductions.

I wonder how many people who complain of talent declines to their players despite the player having no injuries are playing the game with the low or very low injury setting?

In the specific case of Adrian Beltre, it's his Turn DP rating that's the issue - maybe the Turn DP minimum needs to be removed for third basemen.

I also gave his turn dp rating a bit of a boost for now, though that won't help anyone with this year's rosters at this point. |
