Game 163 screws up a .400 season!

If you know what happened at the end of the 1941 season in real life, Ted Williams entered a meaningless doubleheader on the last day with a batting average that rounded up to .400. He could have sit out the doubleheader, but he decided to play, and was able to maintain the .400 average.

Well, in a fictional league of mine (ironically in 1941!), Roth Koertig didn't have the same kind of choice, and things didn't pan out as well for him.

He ended 162 games at 221-552, or a batting average of .4004.

Unfortunately for him, his Philadelphia Trolls were tied with the Mesa Pugs at 80-82 for the eighth and final playoff spot of the National League.

In Game 163, the Trolls won 8-2, but Koertig went 0-5, finishing with a batting average of .3968.

What a rough way to mess up a .400 season!

Yes, but Koertig went down like a man. Like a MAN!

.397 or .400 is really no difference, as far as an accomplishment.

at least you didn't wimp out and sit him the last game. you stuck to the true spirit of competition

i don't consider Strahan a single season sack leader(or co-leader i forget), because favre and his OL just let him walk in for a sack and favre went down faster than a prom dress. no integrity, no shame - just despicable.

.400 is a great milestone though. I don't control any team in this league, so it wasn't me that started him, plus it's insane to not start a .400 hitter in an elimination game.

The Red Sox played 155 games in 1941 (though Williams only played in 143 of those). Indeed, every major league club except two played more than 154 games that season.

edit: whooops i misread something so the following is a bit off, lol.

i get it. i just don't differentiate from amazing and ... amazing. it's a culturally constructed stuff - not my cup of tea. i know i am in the minority on this. i just think the spirit of the game gets lost by this type of focus.

.400, 50+hr, 200hits, etc etc... they hold absolutely no divine aura for me, except that they are phenomenal years and something to strive for and take pride in, but i don't look at them as the black and white threshold as they are portrayed in the media and such.

i'm definitely, maybe insane <the dingo ate my baby! oops, excuse that outburst>, because i would start him if he is part of a lineup that gives me the best chance to win a game, which is the case of a .400 capable hitter (see, i still reference it, but it's not a specific number to me). the considerations i would have against playing him would not include maintaining his batting average.

one example would be the playoff berth is secured and the guy is a walking accident waiting for his next injury.

i know i am a bit different in this respect. i don't say this to convince you or anyone of anything.

i'm cold. i only care about achieving the best possible result with the best possible preperation while remaining true to the spirit of competition and a high level of integrity. since baeball is a team sport, individual accolades are nice and i take pride in them, but they are not considered in my decisions. i just keep my head down and trudge forward - let the chips fall where they may.

Nah. There is something about round numbers, like a finish line or a high jump bar. .397 did not make it to the .400 finish line nor did it clear the .400 high jump bar. Fail.

Of course, this is coming from somebody who thought this was exciting:

You must have a very small baseball hall of fame as well.

i think they call that OCD

if i'm on jeopardy, i'm betting to get the most money relative to competition and winning. i don't care if it ends in a zero. that sums it up succinctly.

excluding 5-10 players is insignificant. i certainly don't try to research everoyne that got caught. i haven't done this in any '16 league i've played. i defeintiely don't want mcguire, sosa, palmeiro, or clemens in my hall of fame. without the list in front of me, i bet there are a couple more.

bonds would have made it anyway. you could argue that about palmiero and clemens too, but they are just douc&#bags. clemens is a modern day cro-magnon man, LoL. my left nut has a higher iq.

if that was meant with any double meaning, me thinks thou dost protest too much.

And all the players who used to take greenies? Players who doctored baseballs?

Actually, I had the pleasure of coaching one of Roger Clemens' sons. He is a terrific father and a nice guy. Speaking with him in person, I found him to be intelligent and articulate.

settle down, lol. it's the hof of a game i play(ed).

yes, they are all cheaters, too. they have a total lack of integrity and disrespect everyone they ever played against and everyone who has or ever will play the game. they should all be looked down upon. don't forget to include wife-beaters, other violent criminals, and any other behavior befitting a dreg of society.

just because cheating is commonplace does not make it okay. that is a logical fallacy.

what kind of person defends cheating, lying and other deplorable acts? arguably worse yet, is someone that puts these people on a pedestal and doesn't understand the folly in this act. they allow this sort of stuff to continue due to their indifference. (fans, in general, do this)

i never cheat in a sport to gain an advantage, not even when the other team or person is cheating. there is no acceptable rationalization for cheating. my integrity is more important. i am secure enough in myself that winning a silly sporting competition does not define me as a person in any way - regardless of how much time i spend on said sport.

i spend alot of my leisure time in a sport where cheating is rampant -> golf. you learn alot about a person's integrity when you golf with them.

okay, well i am guilty of an ad hominem logical fallacy, but....

he threw a broken bat at someone for no reason.

he had a history of throwing at people's heads (more so early on in career).

he has consistently has shown he is controlled by his emotions rather than rational thought.

when he got in trouble, he blamed other people for his choices. so, he has not accountability when it really matters.

he perjured himself - i don't care if convicted or not.

while he was an adult he had sex with a 15 year old. this was also adultery. but, i think statutory rape trumps that. (lol she said he often had E.D.) oh, and he cheated on his wife with at least 4 other women.

he has still never admitted to steroid use.

so, he is irresponsible, unaccountable for his actions, a criminal, and an alduterer. if that was my dad, i'd be embarassed. i'm gald to say my father is ten time the person clemens ever is or was.

well that's all okay because he done throws a baseball good'n hard <in an oaf's voice>.
