What's harder for you guys?

What's harder for you guys reaching the top of your league or staying on top of your league?

In other words is it harder to build a championship team or is it harder to maintain a championship caliber team?

Definitely maintaining for me.

Expansion team in a small market. Once my team is competitive it is harder to keep the system flush with prospects to replace the star level players that I can no longer afford. If I screw up even one trade of one of my star assets or sign one bad extension I can be behind the 8 ball pretty quick.

I'm in the same boat with you I also have the habit of giving veterans big contracts Then I have 3-4 there are no longer quality on my team taking up space taking up money basically having to wait for them to retire so I'll go with a good stretch of just sucking

i have draft pick trading on. baseball is like a grumpy old man that refuses to change even in the face of inctrovertable fact. every modern american professional league allows pick trading. they are allowed to trade compensatory picks or something now, anyway.

there is a point where you cannot trade five picks and move up 1 round. so, those later picks i try to package with prospects that i will never use in order to trade up. by the teens, you can trade five picks and move up a couple rounds. i will trade my low 1 with 3(if extra),4(any),5, etc.. and see how high i can get.

rounds 1-3 maybe 1-5 i value a bit more. the rest is a like winning a lottery, and please remember that the lotter is a tax on the poor.

someone did a run down on likelihood of players developing based on rounds etc... had to do with the talent change randomness setting. find that thread and you can see where a draft pick becomes worthless in comparison to what you can trade it for.

my goal is to add 3-5 prospects that have a real chance of making the majors from the get go. if there is really good talent, i will try to get 2 first round picks and forget the rest.

with the tigers i can max scouting and development, pay for good to great minor league coaches (always controlling), and maintain a 150million dollar payroll. it's more fun to maintain than to build, because it's tougher. it really forces you to understand the value of various options/strategies. you find one of many strategies that work, but you don't force a strategy down the game's throat.

as george bush once said, so eloquently, "Fool me once, shame on me. fool me twice...<awkward silence>... well, you're never gonna fool me again. <bush laugh>"

my advice, and it's simple, don't do that.

roll the dice on 1, maybe 2 geriatrics if you are in a tight spot, but don't let it be half your lineup.

the first thing i do when i start a new carreer with the tigers is trade victor martinez and ian kinsler.

Maintaining.

The global Game AI is much improved. In the past it was easy to wait for significant young FA to come on the market when AI teams had no cash. Now they get signed to extensions (some still outrageous) and the FA market is less productive for me. The FA left on the market are far more risky. After 26 WS wins in 80 seasons I'm in danger of missing the playoffs for the 4th time in the last 5 seasons. I didn't get stupid suddenly. The AI isn't leaving plums for me to pick.

I love the challenge of staying on top and trying to win back-to-back(-to back) world series championships, albeit in fictional leagues. I think it takes a lot of thinking and planning, including the financial aspects of course, to be able to maintain your dominance in your league, while also avoiding being fired by your owner (winning always helps).

Both. The past couple of versions, I have not been able to dominate as I have in the past. Even when I am busting my rear end, trying.
