GM Mode & Manager Controls - Concern

I love OOTP, been playing every year and been buying the new version every year and I will continue to do so. This game is a true triumph.

That being said I really hate the new GM versus GM & Manager controls. I like to hire a manager, but set the line ups and the pitching staff and let him manage the games (I sim them all).

I am from DC and play with the Nats and no matter what, even when I modify his personality Matt Williams locks me out of setting the line ups and the pitching staff.

Next thing I did was change to GM & Manager mode and assigned Matt Williams as my bench coach, I thought that would fix things. But it seems there is a strategic gap when you do that and only sim the games, meaning the team's performance immediately slipped. Poor PH and starter pull vs. stay in decisions, etc.

I really wish we could set it up where the Manager CANNOT lock you out of setting the line ups and pitching staffs. Maybe it is a modifier in game settings? Seems you can customize everything in OOTP, except this feature and that is frustrating.

(I know I can go into individual player settings to have some semblance of control over line ups and staffs but that is just way too much work)

Just a guess but wouldn't using 7 day lineups override the manager?

Yes. This has been one of then biggest downgrades between this years and last. Even though I control everything, I want the real life manager to still be there. Even if he is just racking up wins and loses. And after a few years if he retires or I have a bad year(which is my fault) I can fire him or get a new manager. I'm in 2035 and I am still the manager of the Red Sox. It would be fun to hire someone else and have a tally of who held the manager's desk after Farrell.

well a downgrade is certainly an opinion but not fact. for example, i am completely indifferent about the feature - slightly leaning toward approval, if i was forced to decide. it's merely a new part of an increasingly sophisticated game.

i think it's more true to life, which in the big picture is a major goal of the game. on the other hand, it is still a game and not real life. we don't want to watch the players drive to the stadium and wait at traffic lights.

just as in real life, if you, as a gm, want someone to play, you need a willing manager. that is not always the case.

so, don't hire "controlling" managers. their reputation will play a part in that too. when they are inexperienced they might let you alter a lineup, but once they build a reputation they might change.

not sure if you can find a controlling manager with good reputation without the restrictions. but you can defintiely find less esperienced ones that allow you to do so.

i notice some only limit you in pitching, others in just lineup, and still others that limit you in all areas of their decisions.

if you like matt williams, change his personality.

no, that won't work unfortunately. i don't even think setting the player's strategy to force start at a position works? that last part i could be wrong.

Players missing starts because they're stuck in traffic jams will be a feature of OOTP 17.

Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure that the MLB license terms will bar the game from adding "Hacker" to team personnel.

That is an "off-the-books" employee.

or is that comissioner mode?

Just go under Control & Auto Play tab and there is a section called Team Control Settings. For Lineups and Pitching Staff change these to yourself.

some, if not all, 'controlling' personality mangers do not allow you to make changes to any combination of strategies, lineups, or pitching staff, regardless of other settings in the game, including comissioner mode.

It must be some because I have a controlling manager and the options to control lineups and pitching staff are not greyed out nor does he change my move. Maybe I have 1 out of a few who allow this? I'm playing fictional player/MLB setup btw.
