Pirates underrated, Phillies/Brewers overrated

As a Bucco fan, I may have to go and change the pitching ratings for Gerrit Cole, AJ Burnett and Francisco Liriano, considering they are all absolutely dominating this season.

And man, the Phillies and Brewers are actually competitive in this game, they need downgraded. Especially the Phillies, this team may end up historically bad. Give Chase Utley a 4/4/4 contact/gap/power rating.

As the player ratings were compiled before the 2015 season, the results are never going to mimic real life. Real life rarely mimics real life, after all.

Ratings were based on preseason PECOTA. All of those three are overperforming expectations.

Remember, the game doesn't know names. It knows Chase Utley as a bunch of numbers. Sometimes those numbers will differ from real life.

And not many experts expected the Brewers to suck the way they do this season ... and neither did I

the fact that the ratings are compiled before the season starts is defintiely important, but the results of the season (let alone only through mid-june) are not enough evidence to say one thing or another.

just as in the game, plenty of players/teams can be hot for a quarter to half a season. quite often there is a team overperfoming each season.

with that said, while the ratings are based mostly in reality, bias and limited information definitely affects some more than others. the bottom line is their guess is probably more educated and well-thought out than our guess - especially with a home town team.

it's possible you are right, but it's impossible to have a high level of confidence about the assumptions. (see fooled by randomness thread)

I don't think that many new players realize that this is a simulation, not Madden.

The Astros typically underperform in the game, but no one expected what they are doing in real life.

I have the Pirates in an on-line league, where they started 2015 just as they have this year in real life, staying within striking distance of first place.

After the All-Star break, they collapsed and wound up the season exactly at .500.

Let's wait and see how accurate OOTP is at forecasting.

The sad thing is, he's hit pretty well, PEDs or not! The rest of the team is just mostly garbage.

I wouldn't suggest messing with Cole much, though his currents might be a touch low, his potentials are very high and he should max them out very, very quickly in most games.

Liriano is also pretty highly rated, if you mess with him too much, you'll make him too good. His rl BB's and hits allowed are both lower than he's ever managed before in his career, and his K's are higher. So there's some real flukiness (is that a word?) going on there, unless you actually think he's genuinely improved beyond all recognition at 31 years old!

Burnett, same deal. His hits, walks and HR's allowed are all flukily low so far, totally out of line with his track record over the last 15 years. So I think this year so far for him is a total, absolute, fluke and he'll be regressing heavily very soon.

Idk, on the Phillies. Running dozens of test seasons during beta, I'm pretty sure I never saw them above .500 or in the playoffs. So maybe it's still early in your season? Or maybe they just happened to hit the 1 in 100 odds that they'd actually be any good?

Generally I found the Pirates were very much competitive as well, the Brewers too, but I don't think anyone expected the Brewers to be this bad.

lol yeah, i was just teasing a bit.

the brewers have lost alot of talent the past few years.

someone mentioned the astros, but they have a few surprise starting pitchers... but again... like someone else said let's wait till the end of the season.

even then, the results do not have to match the game to justify an accurate simulation. if you magically restarted the real-world season, many many things would be different the second time around. maybe the brewers would be 35-25 leading their division... nah that's not happening!

Phillies were dead last in my first season... Pittsburgh was too.

Washington swept Detroit to win the World Series.

I'm still in the first year of the MLB QS and I just swept the Phillies to put them at something like 17-37.

I admit I don't watch much Brewer baseball but last I checked wasn't Braun batting around 240? If that's the case I would hate to see what the rest of the team is doing if you consider that good.

In my league Braun won the MVP award in 2015 but the Brewers were 70-92.

I care about average almost as little as I care about (pitcher) wins. He's got 13 bombs and 41 RBIs. I guess I'm saying he's hitting well compared to last year, a big letdown season because his thumb bothered him all year.

I have run the 2015 season a number of times. Phillies more times then not are at the bottom of the league. I have had the Mets there too and Atlanta. Brewers always seem to be middle of the road and the Pirates bounce around. I am guessing injuries have a lot to do with it. Look at Washington this year, lots of hurt players and they are not running away with it even with a weakened Miami. Remember your sim is not real life but created life.
