Trade Offer
Not sure what to do here. I am playing as the Red Sox and things have been as bad for me as they are in RL for the hometown team I have trading set on Very Hard, but the Phillies are willing to trade me Hamels for Rusney Castillo and Justin Masterson. Obviously it's a trade that benefits me, but I can't help but feeling like I am taking advantage if I accept.
What say you? |

I'm about 40 games into 2015, last place, 5 games out.
Masterson is pitching, well, like Masterson. ERA north of 7. Castillo is hitting, well, like Castillo. .230's, 1 homerun. Hamels is just 1-5, but has an ERA of 3.02. It's early yet, but it's definitely not promising |

The other option is me adding Deven Marrero and they are willing to add Papelbon. I guess maybe I can justify this as a pure salary dump, while picking up a couple of "prospects". I dunno, I'm torn, I hate taking advantage of the AI.

I would walk away from it:
- the Phils should be looking for prospects. Amaro isn't too sharp in my opinion but the stats just don't pass the reality check in this situation. I would be ok with it if you added a top prospect...even a teenaged one. I am assumimg the Phils see something in Castillo's bat as to the reason they would even be considering the deal. |

Im not suggesting they wouldnt like prospects, i was just stating they wanted a long term OF power bat. In real life they mean a prospect, but OOTP cant think like that

Personally, I think Castillo and Masterson is a little light. The Phillies would not do that in real life. The AI tends to get hung up on moving a player and can make some unrealistic trades as a result, on any setting. My suggestion... canvas real life blog posts discussing a possible trade by the Red Sox to acquire Hamels. Put together a package that resembles the type of deal suggested in these posts and make the trade.

Do you have preference to heavily favor prospects along with very hard? |

This. If you have to question the trade, then obviously you feel the AI might be taking a bad deal. Sometimes, if you're worried about "realism," you have to police the AI's transactions, because the logic isn't always going to be perfect. If it makes you feel better to throw a top prospect into the mix, then go ahead and do it, even if the team will take a lesser offer.

I don't see anything wrong with this move. Players might be struggling, but the other team could see some upside in them worth getting. I don't know the financials involved here, but perhaps they are dumping salary. Getting an established, if crappy, arm back and an OF prospect that has at least some upside makes sense. Masterson can hold down the spot in the rotation vacated by Hamels. Maybe Castillo blossoms into a solid guy to fill a need as well.
Hard to really say without seeing the whole picture. |

I ended up backing away, it just didn't feel right.
I turned around and traded Masterson to the Blue Jays for Edwin Encarnacion. Still a little one sided, but I could justify it as Toronto had Encarnacion in the minors and was playing Smoak as the everyday 1B. This is allowing me to try him out as his contract next year is a Team Option, so I am thinking he could replace Napoli in 2016. As for Hamels, I haven't given up hope yet, but I am seeing if there is anyway at all I can make the move without giving up Betts, Boegarts, Swihart, Devers, Margot, etc.... Thanks for the feedback everyone! |

The trade you took sounds a lot more one-sided than the trade you refused.

I got a super-hot Brandon Moss for him in my game. That is a lot better return than Justin Masterson.

There is no way Amaro would do this in real life! You would need to throw in some old dudes. Phillies love old players past their prime.
In all seriousness, it is a good trade for you in the short run, if you are only 5 games back. But is your offense putting up the numbers? 3.05 is pretty good for a Phillies team that has no punch in its lineup. And I agree with the post above, no GM Amaro or not would trade Hammels for so little. |
