With me, it is two questions: One is how much time is left on the contract? If it is a year or two and he is not causing a ruckus in the clubhouse, I will keep him around and maybe pinch hitter and spot start him, unless his fielding is awful. I generally try not to sign players to long term deals past the age of 35 so I do not run into the steep decline unless it is a young player due to injury. If they are a problem, I dump him, even if I have to pay the team some cash to off set it.
Second, how long has the player been with me? If I raised he from a rookie, sometimes it is hard to let go! |

Crap! I just signed Tyson Ross to a HUGE 5 year contract with Blue Jays in 2018 when he is 30 years old. Like 32 million a year. Now in his first year, he is not even performing extremely good yet so far into May. Haha!
This is what happens when you overpay, but I needed starting pitching and I wanted to push for the playoffs. Had lots of money for free agents at that time. Last edited by RISP!; 06-04-2015 at 09:53 PM. |

Honestly something to think about if the player is closer to a
Milestone or a record I leave them in. I hope they get that milestone or record or come very close it. Once/if they get it then I bench them Or try to trade them. But it's something I do. I guess a way to reward the player for all his years in service to reach that plateau

This is a good point. Always try putting them on waivers, getting you out of the contract, before you release them. I've been surprised by a couple of way-overpaid guys that I threw onto the waiver wire and was pleasantly surprised when they got claimed.
