Files in saved games that are safe to delete

Hi Guys,

I was wondering which files are safe to delete from saved games. I have a new computer and I'm transferring the saved game files but it's too big.

Thank You For Your Time

I'll look this up tonight, with the proviso that the list used to be valid as to which files could be safely deleted.

In the meantime, when you say "it's too big" after asking about which files are safe to delete from saved games, I am assuming that it's not actually the file sizes that are the problem but the NUMBER of files. I keep hammering on this whenever the topic comes up - it takes any computer a long time to individually address each and every file among thousands of them that need to be copied or moved to external file storage.

So, what I and others here recommend is that you use a program like WinZip to compress it all into one large zip file. Since the computer is not transferring the files from one piece of hardware to another, the time to create the zip file, while substantial, is still much less than an external copy/move operation. Then, when the zip file is ready, it is only one file to address when copying and moving so overall the process is much quicker.

The only files that are absolutely necessary for gameplay are all the .dat files. However, the news/txt folder contains probably the bulk of the history that is hard to play without, and the messages folder contains all the emails. But the only necessary files are the .dat ones.

As mentioned, often it's faster to zip the entire folder, then copy across, then unzip on the other end (I usually recommend 7-zip). The other thing that I've done is to simply suck it up - I start the transfer before I go to bed, or go out for the day, so that when I come back it will finish.

Why wait? Look at Rich's post #9 in this thread - he lists the folder locations of each set of files which are safe to delete:

However, you may want to try my recommended solution first. There are ramifications from deleting some of these files; for example, I believe deleting messages erases the entries in player profiles under "News articles involving this player" (or however it's actually termed).

revise what is saved/retained for your league. then make a new backup or whatever. you can slim the size down with more precision.

defragging can speed moving these files around, but any new league or anytime it's copied it will be fragmented again. i moved all my media files to the slower portion of the disk partition. i've since deleted some tv shows or a couple movies. so, i my hd tries to fill these gaps and i end up with tons of files in the slowest portion of the drive. that can be nearly 50% difference on a large file, not sure how it affects many small files.

i won't use this game on my ssd - i'd burn through it in a year, lol.

invest in a patch cable (can attach it to a regular cat-5 for needed length). it will be faster than a wireless network transfer and very cheap.

I'm glad you posted this. I am in the process of ordering a customized laptop, and I was about to change some stuff up because I was suddenly worried the SSD decision was a bad one!
