Developing Player to Play New Pos

How do you do this the most efficient and successful way? I have 6 '3 215 lefty who fits the perfect mold as future 1B but currently has no DEF rating at 1B. Hes 25 and already in the Majors but the problem is there's no room for him to play the OF but I have spot at 1B he could play. How can i get his DEF rating good enough to play at 1B?

Send him to the minor leagues and force start him at 1B.

Alternatively, you could just stick him at 1B in the majors, if you're willing to live with the bad fielding while he learns it. RchW's suggestion is better though, if he's got options left.
