Long term contracts

Is it just me or has anyone else had problems with long term contracts. It never fails I will agree to a 10 year contract with some super star who fades out in 5 or so. Then your paying a huge contract for a burn out the last few seasons can't get rid of him so your stuck. Now I play historical with ghost players so I'm not sure if that has any thing to do with it. Thanks in advance for your input....

I mean realistically you're 5 years are his prime and afterwards he's on the downfall of his career...sounds pretty realistic to me.

For reference A-Rod and Alberto Pujols say hello

If I can't sign a guy for 5 or less he doesn't play for my team.

Well I wont get sucked in ever again, I had 40 million tied up in guys who were finished. I think 5 years with an option will be the max they
get out of me. Thanks for the feedback so quickly guys.

I'm in general agreement with you. The only time I'll go longer is if I am signing a young guy I already control. As an example, I have a 27yr old star OF who I just signed to a 7yr deal (with two team option years). I bought out 3 arbitration years. I'll do longer deals for guys like this. For me, it's less about contract years and more about what age he will be at the end of the contract. I like to have contracts either expiring or team options when they are turning 32-33yrs old.

I like to only sign players to deals over 2 years if they'll be only 31/32 at the end. The only time I'll do a long contract is for an FA under 29 or so or if I have a young guy under team control. If I must break these rules, I'll usually use a team option for extra flexibility.
