ootp 16 - inaugural draft guide
ootp 16 - inaugural draft (data from update 3) - a real exmple follows in first reply.
i use a 1-100scale when referencing abilities from profile page. it's important to understand what types of players are more consistent than others. it would take a book to write that out. take a guy like ian kinsler - shows decent contact. he will be up and down because his babip is too low. a high avoid k's guy should have 110babip rating to consistently hit 280-300. create shortlists of preferred prospects, positions, etc... a little homework helps. after round 6-7 review what gets taken in the previous round. stay up on what prefered mlb players per position are left that you picked out. you may want to categorize like: lf-obp lf-power. keep the prospect lists when done, but obviously you can delete mlb shortlists. Starting pitching: create a filter for position and set stamina to a level you expect from a starter. some RP are actually SP (e.g. d norris). do some research, create a list of acceptable top 4 pitchers. you should be able to find 15-20 that you like. if they only have 3 pitches, make sure two of them are 81+(blue) or so and a 71+(green) 3rd pitch. 4pitches go for at least 2 blue 2 green (one upper 50's for 4th pitcher is ok). Bullpen: i use a cl9, su8, su7, mr+, mr/lr, mr/lr, lr/mr. the last 3 i modify based on how the year is going. reducing role of worst one. (add 'use less often' or shift a mr/lr to lr/mr. the lower rated pitcher will get fewer innings of the two LR. fielders: use filters to find the attributes you want for your lineup. prospects: the closer they are to the show, the earlier they go. if they are 1 year or less away they go very early. e.g. you don't find many of these 1-year or less pitchers after round 12. focus on older prospects for positions with advanced age in the MLB and heavy on SP(you can get upto 12 really good ones in example draft below). as with major leaguers, power hitters and SP tend to go the fastest. Line-Up: a 6-deep line-up with good pitching is a good goal. batters 7-9 used for defensive positions and possibly a young player that is mlb ready but still developing - especially at defensive positions, because these are swiped early in the draft, and you can find value later in draft this way. 1 - fast, an obp maching that doesn't strikeout - look at stealing as a bonus. 2 - obp machine with at least doubles power - speed prefered, but no clods. 3 - 'best' hitter in game type - all-round hitter, prefer non-clod 4 - good average and power 5 - good average and power 6 - good average and power Bench: better bench = less prospects or lesser bullpen. don't skimp on first 4RP though. average RP are found in 50's and 60's rounds. if your line-up turns out well, focus on speed, baserunning and multiple positions for your bench. if you want them to be capable hitters, find them in 20's/30's. otherwise, wait until you get all the minor league prospects you want. find a few borderline starters for depth. a competent back-up catcher can be found as late as mid 20's. j. centeno is a decent one. d. ortiz is available until well after you care who you are picking. if you want an expensive 1-year pinch hitter are last option DH, he is great late in the draft. Draft example: 1 - trout(can play LF/CF, must have first pick) or cabrera 1b/dh (late as round 2 pick 1 or 2 - if you don't think a non serpentine draft is cheating you can get both these players round 1-2.) 2 - find a great lead-off or another top-end hitter for awesom 3-4 batting line-up punch - the position choosen affects things below - i will assume a cf with m cabrera. find 4 SP in next 4-5 rounds. not limited to these choices ofc. 3 - SP g cole 4 - SP m moore 5 - SP z wheeler 6 - C B swihart 7-9 (this will be last round this guy is available. this is my keeper rookie fielder) 7 - SP d norris (listed as RP) After the 7th, it gets pretty tough to predict what will be available. i think you get better OF's than 3b/ss/2b in rounds 8 and 9. ellsbury, cespedes, hamilton, eaton, pence, crawford all can be available, depending on how the draft has gone so far. 8-9 - 1OF obp/speed good doubles power (2nd in lineup type) 1OF avg/power - you won't see many decent OF after. if you took a leadoff 2nd, both of these guys should have power. At this point you need: 3b, ss, 2b for rest of line-up. 10 - 3b g cecchini is usually available - 3b are pretty sucky if you wait longer than 10. he could be a great number 2 hitter in year 2. 11 - ss j ramirez is usually available - you can also get a good defensive SS as late as 24-27. 12 - open for a high-end minor league prospect, preferably SP - or - draft a need for lineup. if serpentine, use for 1b a gonzalez. 13 - 1b a gonzalez (DH/1b) - may want to nab at 12 -or- DH d ortiz will be available 100+rounds. 14 - 2b jm fernandez is available rd. 12-14. he's an obp machine if your 1-2 batter falters. he is not fast, but by year 2 he should be a 300avg/400obp kinda guy. as with ss, you can probably find a 2b in early 20's rounds too. 15 - 5th SP - may need to grab rd.13-15. B finnegan(is a rp) or b farmer are good options. good movement, stuff with a 50+ish control is better than skimping on either of the other 2 traits. from here on out focus on minor league prospects and filling your bullpen and bench. remember younger prospects go later unless they are truly phenoms. don't worry about fielding prospects until ~round 24, but same rules apply on age. the good prospect starters left will come off the board quickly by the 20's. so, you can gain some value by grabbing some now and your bench doesn't suffer much. Relivers' availability - not restricted to these four, but you can get equivalent talent in each round listed: 21 - cl c kimbrel. if closers start getting picked, he should be there next round. or just grab at 21-22. 25 - rp w davis 26 - rp j mcgee 33 - rp k giles i find decent relievers with 3 pitches for my lower MR and LR. 2 good options are: 36 - j venters 37 - a barret 7th reliever sometime before round 65ish - make sure movement is 60's. decent stuff and ~50 control. make sure they have a change of speeds. Final Notes after 60ish rounds: after all the 60+ potential kids are gone, i quickly fill minors with matching ability. i like to keep minors slim. if there are too many rounds for the amount of players you wish to have in your organization, make one more shortlist of all your players. you can simulate the rest of the draft and quickly release non-capitalized players - delete all inclusive shortlist when done. when i draft i make sure to have only 1-2 players that need to be replaced within 2 years. this way i don't have to care too much about prospects being close to the majors. many if/of prospects can develop into multiple positions. so, don't worry too much if you grab too many ss/cf prospects, because they can move to a better-fitted position and only the best remain as ss/cf. use prospects you have no use for as trade bait for draft picks or whatever in ensuing years. your minors should be stocked full of at least 20-25 good to great prospects. outside of the good prospects, fill minor league spots with players that can perform at that level. do not consider potential much for these players beyond enough being able to make it to AAA. view them as a tool to improve your real prospects' growth. draft results from non-serpentine.
you'll have 800+ runs, hands-down the best bullpen(and cheap if smart), and one of the best rotations that is young and still getting better.
1 j ellsbury cf 2 jm fernandez 2b - this doesn't fit intended mold-the draft is fluid 3 m trout lf 4 m cabrera 1b 5 y cespedes rf (good arm won't take long) 6 a gonzalez dh 7 b swihart c 8 g cecchini 3b 9 j ramirez ss sp: g cole, m moore, z wheeler, d norris, b finnegan rp: c kimbrel, w davis, j mcgee, k giles, j venters, a barret, 7th rp. To give an idea of what can happen. i left out bench players. again, substitute some of the propspects for MLB depth for starters. i used OF/IF because many of them will change positions anyway. 1 lf m trout 2 1b m cabrera 3 sp g cole 4 sp m moore 5 sp z wheeler 6 c b swihart 7 sp d norris - listed RP 8 cf j ellsbury 9 lf y cespedes 10 3b g cecchini 11 ss j ramirez 12 sp c rodon 13 1b a gonzalez - DH 14 2b jm fernandez 15 sp b finnegan 16 ss jp crawford 17 sp l giolito 18 sp j urias 19 sp d bundy 20 sp brady aiken 21 sp k cody 22 cl c kimbrel 23 sp m matuella 24 OF J bell 25 of n mazara 26 rp w davis 27 rp j mcgee 28 if a bergman 29 of a jackson 30 sp k allard 31 sp d everett 32 of b zimmer 33 if o albies 34 rp k giles 35 sp m nikorak 36 sp d chalmers 37 rp j venters 38 rp a barrett 39 of b mckinney 40 if b rodgers 41 if f barreto 42 of a meadows 43 of t taylor 44 if j morgan 45 of j amundaray 46 2b f wall 47 if d garcia 48 if d swanson 49 1b b stallings 50 1b d davis 51 if j aiello 52 of i happ 53 of t clark 54 1b b bradley 55 7th Reliever 56 dh d ortiz 57 58 59 of b hernandez 60 of m sierra Last edited by NoOne; 04-27-2015 at 03:27 PM. |
