Crazy contracts?

I recently completed my first year as the Mariners general manager, and earlier in the season I traded for Alex Gordon of the Royals. He ended up having a pretty good year, posting 6.5 Season WAR and winning a gold glove. I tried to extend him, but he is demanding $27mm/year. That's outrageous, and at the end of the season he avoided his contract, and proceeded to free agency. Today is the first day of free agency, and here is a picture of the top free agents and their asking prices. I'm just wondering if this is going to get lowered, or if these insane prices are working as intended. Cheers.

Their asking prices will eventually go down if they don't sign, but stars are going to ask for big money. They definitely will accept a lower amount, so feel free to give them an offer.

That's actually really interesting. I made this post before I attempted making an offer in free agency, and after Gordon turned down $25mm AAV during the season, he actually accepted a $20mm AAV starting offer today. I suppose we will see where it goes.

What about relief pitchers? In one of my leagues, there was at least 15 closers and relief pitchers that were asking for more than 10 million per year, most of those asking more than 15 million per. Even a couple of relievers were asking for 14 million and never pitched higher than AAA. Those numbers seem really high considering Andrew Miller this past offseason got 9 million a year, and he had a dominant year and got one of the longest contracts for a non-closing reliever in years. There were close to 20 relievers asking for more than that. It wouldn't be a big deal if their demands came down, but a lot of them actually got what they were asking. Tyler Clippard got a 1 year, $15 million contract coming off a year where he had an ERA over 3. I wondered if it was just because they didn't want to pitch for me, but switching teams, I saw that they were asking less of me than other teams. I haven't downloaded any patches yet, so maybe it was fixed and I don't know about it.

As a Jays fan, I'd be very happy with that season Bautista had. But no way is he worth $36 million at his age.

I've noticed in this version there's a lot more movement in negotiations -- players will adjust their demands more than by a few 100k each offer.

Free agency in OOTP tends to be fairly top-heavy. I had a league in 14 or 15 where Robinson Cano got something like 7 years at an AAV of 38M as a free agent. If the AI has money to spend, they will go stupid outbidding each other on the top FAs.

Focus your FA money on the 2nd tier guys, and have a max price in mind on them. Or, develop your own talent and extend them early.

It's all about supply and demand. If you got cash to spend, go for it. I like to wait until the other teams make their moves and get some vets on some sweet 1 year deals. The key is drafting and development.

Now that we've gotten the larger bugs out of the way, I'll likely spend a little time next week balancing out contract demands.

Being a Pirate fan, I stay away from Big $$ guys

IF I can, I trade my stars early. If not, I just bite the bullet and hope I have a better replacement.

It is all about ROI (Rate of Investment) for me. As the poster mentioned above...there are lots of second tier guys who will do quite well.

Speaking of asking prices, I would love for the AI to be able to sign more vets to minor league contracts with MLB option for the purpose of bringing them in for spring training as a non roster invitee. Some vets don't budge on their demand until the season is about to start.

I usually have pretty normal asking prices. My only issue with free agency is when guys who washed out in the MLB, like Jose Lopez, get huge contracts because they perform well in foreign leagues. I've seen Lopez get a 6 yr, $86m dollar deal, and guys like Barbaro Canizares who barely played past AAA get a deal in the $4-8m range. Also, I've seen guys who haven't played baseball since 2003 get contracts at the start of a season. Luckily, they're for the minimum, so that's not a huge deal, but it bothers me when MLB washouts get big deals. Even Andruw Jones frequently sign for $6-8m a year.

The contract portion of the game needs a complete overhaul.

I have a 39 y/o pitcher who one of my season goals is to sign to an extension.

He's making $12m this year and is currently 0-4 with a 5+ ERA so I thought I'd have some leverage in signing to a 1-2 year extension at $5-7M annually.

Discuss an extension and he wants a 4 year contract at $18M annually.

Offer him the 7 million and make his price come down.
