Omaha Mutuals (13-5 .722 1st place) at Philadelphia Quakers (9-9 .500 tied for 4th place) 3 weeks ago, we swept the Quakers in Omaha. Doubleheader Game 1 Lee Sprague, Omaha (23-3.5) (R 9-2 1.70 5.3-1.1-4.8 H-BB-K/9) vs Bill McLean, Phil. (37-6.0) (R 5-4 2.48 9.3-1.0-3.9) Won - 4 to 1 The game was tied at 2 going into the 9th. LF Ephraim Fletcher (31-5.7) led off with a walk and SS Sam Hinkle (26-6.3) then doubled him home. Hinkle also had a single and scored 2 runs in the game. Sprague allowed 6 hits, walked 1 and did not strike out a batter. RF Hank Roberts (24-3.0) had 2 hits and a triple and an RBI. 1B Frank Burnett (30-4.4) had a double and a triple, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. Game 2 Sprague only threw 97 pitches in the first game and he wanted to go again, so I let him. Lee Sprague, Omaha (23-3.5) (R 10-2 1.57 5.4-1.1-4.4 H-BB-K/9) vs Jim Postema, Phil. (33-5.5) (R 4-5 2.58 8.9-2.6-3.4) Lost - 3 to 1 Postema held us to only 5 hits, 2 of them by LF Ephraim Fletcher. Postema walked 1 and struck out 1. Sprague gave up 7 hits, no walks and struck out 3. Editor's Note: The schedule is apparently messed up as you can see from the odd doubleheaders below. I can think of no way to explain this from a Dynasty perspective, so please just ignore the incongruities, please. Please. And thank you. It will all work out in the end. All teams play the proper number games at home and on the road vs. each opponent, just not in the proper order, apparently. I will scrutinize future schedules more carefully. This is the Major League schedule from 1883 that comes with OOTP. Grand National Association Games: Kansas City (10) at Baltimore (0) Game 1: Hosea Alexander (34-4.8) (7-1) over Hardy Rich (39-6.1) (0-7). Alexander allowed 4 hits, no walks and struck out 3. CF Connie Frenette (28-4.7) had 3 hits with a triple and a home run, scored 3 runs and knocked 3 in. Brooklyn (6) at Providence (5) Game 1: Dick Cole (29-5.9) (5-5) over Ted Ryther (29-4.3) (3-9). LF Henry Tucker (35-4.4) had 2 hits, stole a base and scored 2 runs. Kansas City (7) at Providence (3) Game 2: Fred Barrow (31-4.7) (6-4) over Egyptian Hooker (35-3.9) (3-4). 3B Sanford Coffie (28-6.8) had 4 hits with a triple, scored 2 runs and knocked 2 in. Brooklyn (6) at Baltimore (4) Game 2: Dick Cole (6-5) over Pop Yurkovich (31-5.6) (6-6). LF Otis York (27-6.3), last year's GNA MVP, playing in only his 3rd game of this season due to injury, had 3 hits with a double and scored 2 runs. Chicago (4) at Pittsburgh (5) Game 1: Tom Adams (28-6.0) (7-5) over Pete Rinehart (24-6.2) (4-4). Adams allowed 6 hits, walked 1 and struck out 3. Rinehart allowed 6 hits, walked no one and struck out 4. Chicago (2) at Pittsburgh (3) Game 2 in 10 innings: Tom Adams (8-5) over Bill Moore (27-5.7) (3-2) in relief of Pete Rinehart. Adams allowed 10 hits, no walks and struck out 4. LF Harvey Burke (38-2.4) triple to lead off the bottom of the 9th and CF Lyman Horton (26-5.9) singled him home to tie the game. In the bottom of the 10th, RF George Everman (26-6.3) led off with a triple and scored on a fly ball to end the game. Liberty League Games: New York (11) at Washington (4) Game 1: George Taylor (28-3.9) (5-2) over Dan Burton (28-4.9) (2-3). Taylor had 2 hits and scored 2 runs. Washington out-hit New York 14 to 11, but made 10 errors. Cincinnati (7) at Boston (8) Game 1: Charlie Morlock (33-6.7) (5-5) over John Stevens (26-8.2) (6-4). Cincinnati scored a run in the top of the 9th to go ahead, but Boston scored twice in the bottom of the 9th to win. 2B Bill Gordon (26-3.7) doubled with 1 out to end the game. New York (5) at Boston (6) Game 2: Charlie Morlock (33-6.7) (6-5) over Jack Roberts (31-6.1) (7-6). 2B Bill Gordon had 4 hits with a double, scored 2 runs and knocked 2 in. Cincinnati (2) at Washington (3) Game 2: Dan Burton (3-3) over John Stevens (26-8.2) (6-5). Burton allowed 6 hits, no walks and struck out 4. Stevens gave up 7 hits, no walks and struck out 5. CF Kid Orr (24-5.6), in his major league debut, had 3 hits with a double, scored a run and knocked 1 in. St. Louis (2) at Troy (7) Game 1: Harry Lamb (28-6.4) (5-3) over Freddy Wood (27-6.3) (3-3). Lamb allowed 3 hits, no walks and struck out 7. CF Bert Gellis (22-5.5) had 3 hits with a triple, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs. St. Louis (5) at Troy (8) Game 2: John Bendickson (31-6.0) (2-6) over Freddy Wood (3-4). Bendy allowed 8 hits, walked 1 and struck out 3. 3B Bill Rush (34-3.7) had 3 hits with a double and scored a run. Detroit (5) at Utica (6) Game 1 in 10 innings: Tom Marshman (32-4.7) (5-5) over Rufus Lee (32-3.9) (5-2). Utica scored 4 times in the bottom of the 9th to tie the game. LF Elbert Fuccillo (31-5.4) hit a 3-run home run with 2 outs, but they were still a run shy. 3B Kid Angell (33-6.0) then tripled and SS Charlie Taylor (27-5.2) singled him home. In the bottom of the 11th, Fuccillo ended the game with a 1-out double. Detroit (4) at Utica (6) Game 2: Tom Marshman (6-5) over Rufus Lee (5-3). SS Charlie Taylor had 3 hits with a triple, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs. 1B Lou Knight (34-5.2) had 3 hits with a triple, scores a run and had 2 RBIs. During the 3 day break between these games and the last, Cincinnati released Charlie Moss (42-6.3). He was 0-6 with a 4.50 ERA. Counting the games of the old National Association before the Liberty League began play in 1876, Moss is the all-time winningest pitcher in professional baseball with 335 wins. Omaha Mutuals (14-6 .700 tied for 1st place) at Philadelphia Quakers (10-10 .500 4 GB tied for 4th place) The Chicago Colts of the Grand National Association signed Charlie Moss (42-6.3) before today's games. They sent John Ritch (28-7.8) to the minors in Lancaster, Pennsylvania to make room for him. Ritch was pitching pretty well, going 3-4 with an ERA of 2.00. The move is apparently an attempt to boost ticket sales. Moss was a legend in Chicago with the old White Stockings of the National Association from 1871 to 1875. Sprague says he feels fine to go today, so we'll let him have at it. By the way, our opponent, Bill McClean, is the 2nd leading winner of all time as a professional, with 304 wins. Lee Sprague, Omaha (23-3.5) (R 10-3 1.61 5.6-1.0-4.3 H-BB-K/9) vs Bill McLean, Phil. (37-6.0) (R 5-5 2.83 9.4-1.1-4.1) Lost - 4 to 1 McClean held us to 3 measly hits, walked 1 and struck out 3. Our lineup up without George Dominick and especially Dave Cunningham looks pretty pathetic. Other than Hank Roberts (24-3.0) nobody is doing much lately. Sprague allowed 7 hits, no walks and struck out 4. He gave up 4 of the 7 hits in the 3rd inning, when Philly scored 3 times. An oddity of the game today is that all the runs were earned. Grand National Association Games: Chicago (7) at Pittsburgh (4): Charlie Moss (1-0) over John Ericson (26-6.4) (0-1) in his major league debut. Moss allowed 11 hits, no walks and struck out nary a soul. Ericson allowed 9 hits, walked 2 and struck out 5. 3 of the 5 K's were of Charlie Moss. 2B Henry Potter (29-6.4) had 4 hits, stole a base and scored a run. LF Candy Simpson (24-6.8) had 3 hits, a walk, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. Kansas City (4) at Providence (10): Ted Ryther (29-4.3) (4-9) over Hosea Alexander (34-4.8) (7-2). Ryther allowed 8 hits, walked 1 and struck out 3. SS Jack Green (30-5.5), an ex-Haymaker, had 3 hits with a double and a triple, stole 2 bases, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. CF Cub Beauregard (25-5.4) had 2 hits with a home run and scored twice. Brooklyn (10) at Baltimore (2): Henry Rawls (29-4.3) (3-3) over Pop Yurkovich (31-5.6) (6-7). Rawls allowed 9 hits, no walks and struck out 2. LF Otis York (27-6.3) had a double and a triple, scored 3 times and had an RBI. Liberty League Games: St. Louis (2) at Troy (5): Harry Lamb (28-6.4) (6-3) over Tom Zurla (31-7.3) (3-3). Lamb allowed 9 hits, no walks and struck out 7. He also hit a double and scored a run. Zurla held the Haymakers to 6 hits, walked 2 and struck out 5. Stud SS Bill Loschiavo (25-5.8) will be put out to pasture for the next 3 weeks with a sore elbow. Detroit (7) at Utica (4): William Rose (32-4.9) (5-7) over Bill Henrichs (24-7.4) (0-1) in his major league debut. Rose allowed 6 hits, walked 1 and struck out zero. 3B Herman Bonjour (30-5.6) had 3 hits, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. In the spirit of full disclosure, I must admit that I cut him from the Mutuals this Spring. And he had as many hits as our whole team did today. New York (3) at Washington (7): Dan Burton (28-4.9) (4-3) over Jack Roberts (31-6.1) (7-7). Burton allowed 5 hits, walked 1 and struck out 3. SS Bill Scott (27-3.5) had 2 hits, stole a base and scored 3 runs. Cincinnati (6) at Boston (2): Charlie Branham (23-4.2) (2-2) over Joe Peters (27-4.9) (8-1). Branham allowed 7 hits, no walks and struck out 7. 1B Joe Vaughn (28-5.2) had 2 hits with a home run and scored 2 runs. Manager/CF Fleet Wilcox (26-4.9) had 2 hits with his 3rd home run of the season and 2 RBIs. Down in the Northwestern League, 1B Jimmy Wolf (22-5.1) hit for the cycle for the Peoria Reds. He scored 3 runs and had 4 RBIs. The home run was Wolf's 3rd of the season. Peoria is a farm team of the Cincinnati Reds. |

Editor's Note: I have decided that there is no reason to hide certain statistics just because the real baseball pioneers did not think to keep track of them. They happened just the same, whether they recorded them or not.
There is no reason why we cannot choose to believe that some farsighted individual in the Liberty League thought to record stolen bases and times caught and how many times players grounded into doubleplays, etc. The only stats one is accustomed to seeing in a player's line that we will not display are the ones that did not exist at the time. This includes being hit by a pitch. At the time, players were not awarded first base when plunked, so they do not happen in the Liberty League (via properly adjusted league modifiers) This also includes sacrifice bunts and sacrifice flies. They DID happen just as today, however, players were not awarded a sacrifice on the stat sheet, but were charged with an at bat just like any other time they made an out. So, we charge our players with at bats whenver they would today get an SH or an SF. We'll change these rules when the real baseball pioneers changed them. P.S. Balks are a new item for 1883, but I forgot to change the pitcher's stat sheet to include them. I will do this for the next monthly update. However, balks are extremely rare for 1883. They were not what we know as a balk, but were called on pitchers for raising their arms above their shoulders during their delivery. I am not certain the rule was even adopted in the American Association (none were called) and only 1 was called all season in the National League. So far, none have been called in the Liberty League and none have or will be called in the Grand National Association. |

Omaha Mutuals (14-7 .667 tied for 1st place) at Philadelphia Quakers (11-10 .500 3 GB tied for 3rd place) Tom Lee, Omaha (25-6.0) (R 4-3 3.00 7.9-1.8-4.1 H-BB-K/9) vs Bill McLean, Phil. (37-6.0) (R 6-5 2.66 8.8-1.1-4.0) Won - 4 to 3 Good defense won us this game today. LF Ephraim Fletcher (31-5.7) and SS Sam Hinkle (26-6.3) combined to throw a man out at the plate and C Harry Farrell (31-5.6) threw out 2 base stealers. McClean was dealing nasty pitches all day and we were fortunate to get 8 hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out 10. Lee allowed 7 hits, walked 3 and only struck out 1. CF Stub Orlando (28-6.1) had a couple of hits, scored a run and made a couple of great catches. RF Hank Roberts (24-3.0) had 2 more hits, scored a run and had an RBI. 1B Rube Ford (32-5.1) had 2 hits, scored a run and knocked in 2 big runs. For Philly, 1B Pat Ross (26-5.4) had 3 hits, with a double and an inside-the-park home run. Grand National Association Games: Chicago (5) at Pittsburgh (6): Frank Baker (35-6.9) in his first major league start over Charlie Moss (42-6.3) (1-1). 3B Dan White (23-5.1) had 4 hits, stole 2 bases and scored 3 runs. Kansas City (3) at Providence (1): Hosea Alexander (34-4.8) (8-2) over Tom Garrett (37-4.9) (1-1). Alexander allowed but 3 hits, no walks and struck out 4. CF Connie Frenette (28-4.7) had 3 hits with a double and a home run, stole a base and had 2 RBIs. Brooklyn (11) at Baltimore (4): Henry Rawls (29-4.3) (4-3) over Hardy Rich (39-6.1) (0-8). Rawls allowed 4 hits, 2 walks and struck out 5. The Gladiators had 17 hits, all singles. 3 of them by SS George Hartman (32-3.1), who also drew a walk, stole a base, scored 3 runs and drove 1 in. Liberty League Games: St. Louis (1) at Troy (13): John Bendickson (31-6.0) (3-6) over Tom Zurla (31-7.3) (3-4). Is Bendy back in the groove? He allowed 5 hits, walked 1 and struck out 4. He also rapped out 3 hits with his bat, scored a run and knocked 1 in. Detroit (3) at Utica (11): Bill Henrichs (24-7.4) (1-1) over William Rose (32-4.9) (5-8). LF Elbert Fuccillo (31-5.4) had 3 doubles, scored twice and had 2 RBIs. New York (15) at Washington (3): Jack Roberts (31-6.1) (8-7) over Will Taylor (36-7.9) (1-2). Omaha Mutuals (15-7 .682 tied for 1st place) at Pittsburgh Stogies (12-10 .545 3 GB 3rd place) 2 weeks ago we beat the Stogies 2 out of 3 at our place. The 1 game they won was a 14 to 4 pasting of Tom Lee. And since Lee Sprague's arm is still a little tender (though he assured me he could go), I am giving Tommy Webb his first major league start. Now, he has not thrown in a game in tw0 weeks (since that 14 to 4 game), so I expect him to be rusty and not very sharp. Tommy Webb, Omaha (31-4.0) (R 0-0 6.00 12.0-3.0-0.0 H-BB-K/9) vs Tom Adams, Pitt. (28-6.0) (L 8-5 2.29 8.4-0.9-2.4) Lost - 4 to 1 We have now lost 3 of our last 4 and scored exactly 1 run in each defeat. Tommy Webb pitched a pretty good game, considering. The Stogies scored all 4 of their runs in the first 3 innings while Webb was still uncomfortable in the box. He was our best hitter on offense, getting 2 hits and a walks and driving in our only run. Tom Adams held us to 7 hits, walked 1 and struck out 3. All 3 K's came in the 9th inning. RF Hank Roberts (24-3.0) failed to get a hit, ending his hitting streak at 16 games. For the Stogies, 3B Dan White (23-5.1) had 3 hits with a triple, stole a base and scored a run. Grand National Association Games: Chicago (9) at Philadelphia (4): Pete Rinehart (24-6.2) (5-4) over Jim Postema (33-5.5) (5-6). 1B Henry Ivy (32-7.2) hit a 2-run home run. Kansas City (7) at Providence (4): Fred Barrow (31-4.7) (7-4) over Egyptian Hooker (35-3.9) (3-5). LF Charlie Jeffers (32-4.8) had 4 hits with a triple, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. Brooklyn (5) at Baltimore (7): Pop Yurkovich (31-5.6) (7-7) over Dick Cole (29-5.9) (6-6). Yurkovich allowed 6 hits, walked 2 and struck out 4. 1876 Liberty League MVP C Al Cannon (38-5.4) had 3 hits with a home run and scored twice. His batting average is still not up to .200, though. Liberty League Games: Detroit (3) at Troy (4): Miah Turner (22-5.3) (1-0) in his major league debut over Rufus Lee (32-3.9) (5-4). Turner allowed 9 hits, walked 2 and struck out 1. LF Bill Hammack (30-5.0) had 2 hits with a double, scored a run and knocked 1 in. St. Louis (11) at Utica (5): Freddy Wood (27-6.3) (4-4) over Tom Marshman (32-4.7) (6-6). Wood allowed 7 hits, walked 2 and struck out 1. Rf Dummy Smith (29-3.6) had 4 hits and scored 2 runs. Rookie 1B Asa Holtz (23-6.7) had 3 hits with a double and a triple, scored 2 runs and knocked in 4. New York (2) at Washington (4): Will Taylor (36-7.9) (2-2) over George Taylor (28-3.9) (5-3). Will Taylor allowed 7 hits, walked 1 and struck out 1. LF Ace Trimmell (25-5.0) had 2 hits with a double, scored a run and knocked 1 in. Cincinnati (15) at Boston (9): John Stevens (26-8.2) (7-5) over Charlie Morlock (33-6.7) (6-6). Morlock gave up 12 runs in 4 innings. It does not look like a third straight Hurler Trophy is in the stars. William Little (22-6.0) pitched the final 5 innings in his major league debut. He gave up 6 hits, no walks and struck out 6. The Reds pounded out 9 doubles and a triple. 2B Pete Hinde had 1 of them plus 3 other hits, stole a base, scored 4 runs and had an RBI. 1B Joe Vaughan (28-5.2) had 3 hits with 2 doubles, scored twice and knocked in 4. |

Omaha Mutuals (15-8 .652 1 GB 2nd place in the Grand National Association) at Pittsburgh Stogies (13-10 .555 3 GB 3rd place) Lee Sprague, Omaha (23-3.5) (R 10-4 1.79 5.7-1.0-4.3 H-BB-K/9) vs. John Ericson (26-6.4) (L 0-1 2.00 9.0-2.0-5.0) Won - 8 to 5 Sprague did not have much today, but we got some offense, for a change. LF Ephraim Fletcher (31-5.7) had 2 hits with a double and a triple, stole a base, scored a run and knocked 1 in. RF Hank Roberts (24-3.0) started a new hitting streak with 2 hits, a walk, 2 runs and an RBI. C Harry Farrell (31-5.6) had 2 hits and 2 RBIs. 3B Warren Hogan (28-7.2) had 2 hits with a triple, scored a run and knocked 1 in. 1B Rube Ford made 3 errors. Grand National Association Games: Chicago (5) at Philadelphia (6) in 10 innings: Bill McLean (37-6.0) (7-6) over Charlie Moss (42-6.3) (1-2). A pitching match-up that would have had the fans drooling in anticipation 10 years ago, instead had the hitters drooling. Both the old men acquitted themselves decently, however. McClean allowed 10 hits, 1 walk and struck out 7. Moss allowed 9 hits, no walks and struck out 1. LF Clarence Reis (32-5.0) doubled to end the game, but injured himself in the process and will miss the next 6 weeks with a pulled muscle. 1B Pat Ross (26-5.4) had 3 hits with a home run, scored 2 runs and knocked 2 in. It was his second home run of the season. Brooklyn (6) at Providence (3): Henry Rawls (29-4.3) (5-3) over Ted Ryther (29-4.3) (4-10). Rawls allowed 7 hits, no walks and struck out 2. Kansas City (7) at Baltimore (6): Hosea Alexander (34-4.8) (9-2) over Hardy Rich (39-6.1) (0-9). The Cowboys scored twice in the top of the 9th to take the lead, the big blow being a double by CF Connie Frenette (28-4.7). He had 3 hits on the day, stole 2 bases, scored 2 runs and knocked 2 in. Liberty League Games: Detroit (7) at Troy (11): Harry Lamb (28-6.4) (7-3) over William Rose (32-4.9) (5-9). Those who had written the Haymakers off for the season, should note that they have now won 6 in a row and are tied for 2nd place. Lamb allowed 12 hits, but did not walk anyone and struck out 8. RF Jake Howard (24-4.6) had 3 hits with a double, stole a base, scored 2 runs and had 3 RBIs. 3B Bill Rush (34-3.7) had 3 hits, stole a base, scored 3 runs and had 2 RBIs. Wolverine CF Joe Kraus (26-7.9) had 4 hits with a triple, stole a base and scored 3 runs. St. Louis (9) at Utica (1): Tom Zurla (31-7.3) (4-4) over Bill Henrichs (24-7.4) (1-2). Zurla gave up 5 hits, no walks and struck out 7. He also hit a double and scored a run and had an RBI. Cincinnati (6) at Washington (2): Charlie Branham (23-4.2) (3-3) over Dan Burton (28-4.9) (4-4). Branham allowed 5 hits, walked 3 and struck out 10, but was pulled from the game in the 9th inning with 1 out, for some reason. He struck out the first batter of the 9th and then Manager Wilcox extracted him from the box. No reports of injuries or ejection have reached our ears. New York (4) at Boston (6): Joe Peters (27-4.9) (10-1) over Jack Roberts (31-6.1) (8-8). Peters allowed 9 hits, 1 walk and struck out 9. LF Dan Abrams (24-5.1) broke a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the 8th with a 1-out double. |

Omaha Mutuals (16-8 .667 1 GB 2nd place in the Grand National Association) at Pittsburgh Stogies (13-11 .542 4 GB 3rd place) Tom Lee, Omaha (25-6.0) (R 5-3 3.00 7.8-2.0-3.6 H-BB-K/9) vs. Tom Adams, Pitt. (28-6.0) (L 9-5 2.20 8.3-1.0-2.5) Won - 8 to 3 in 10 innings 3 straight errors to lead off the 10th loaded the bases for us and then 3 hits brought in 5 runs. Adams only gave us 7 hits on the day, walked 0 and struck out 5, but 9 Stogie miscues did him in. Of course, we had our own share of miscues. We made 6 errors, 4 of them by 3B Harry Coats (29-4.9), who is now on a train back to Pottsville, Pennsylvania. Lee had his best game yet, giving up only 3 hits, walking 2 and striking out 6. If it wasn't for my dumb idea to put Coats at third, he would have had a shutout. LF Spider Coleman (29-6.2) had 2 hits, stole a base, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs. RF Hank Roberts (24-3.0) got his daily quota of 2 hits, scored twice and knocked in 2. CF John Turner had a double and a triple, scored a run and had 3 RBIs. Grand National Association Games: Chicago (6) at Philadelphia (3): Pete Rinehart (24-6.2) (6-4) over Jim Postema (33-5.5) (5-7). Rinehart allowed only 5 hits, but walked 3 and struck out 2. 2B Patsy Roberts (29-5.5) had 3 hits with a triple and a home run, scored twice and knocked in 2. Brooklyn (15) at Providence (3): Dick Cole (29-5.9) (7-6) over Egyptian Hooker (35-3.9) (3-6). Liberty League Games: Detroit (7) at Troy (2): Rufus Lee (32-3.9) (6-4) over John Bendickson (31-6.0) (3-7). 9 Haymaker errors did Bendy in. He only allowed 8 hits, walked 1 and struck out 5. St. Louis (5) at Utica (7): Tom Marshman (32-4.7) (7-6) over Freddy Wood (27-6.3) (4-4). RF Joe Coffey (26-5.2) had 2 hits with a home run and stole a base. Cincinnati (7) at Washington (4): John Stevens (26-8.2) (8-5) over Dan Burton (28-4.9) (4-5). Each pitcher allowed 8 hits and did not walk anyone. For the Nationals, 2B Tom Anglin (30-5.6) had 3 hits with 2 doubles, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. The win was Davenport's first in the major leagues. Boston scored 4 times in the bottom of the 9th to tie the game. CF Hi Lynch (32-7.5) had 3 hits with 2 doubles, scored twice, including the go ahead run in the 11th inning, and knocked in 3. |

Omaha Mutuals (17-8 .680 tied for 1st place in the Grand National Association) at Pittsburgh Stogies (13-12 .542 4 GB tied for 3rd place) LF Dave Cunningham (27-5.4), probably our best hitter (really, he and RF Hank Roberts (24-3.0) are the only hitters on the team), is finally ready to play. Lee Sprague, Omaha (23-3.5) (R 11-4 1.80 5.9-1.0-4.2 H-BB-K/9) vs. Mark Humphry, Pitt. (38-5.9) (R 3-4 2.73 9.3-1.5-2.4) Won - 9 to 3 Going into the 6th inning, we were down 2 to 0 and had only managed 1 hit off Humphry. We scored in each of the last 4 innings. We made 7 errors. Sprague allowed 5 hits, no walks and struck out 4. SS Sam Hinkle (26-6.3) snapped out of his hitting funk with 2 hits and a triple. He scored twice and knocked in 2. CF Stub Orlando (28-6.1) had 3 hits with a double, scored twice and knocked in a run. Cunningham had an infield hit a walk and scored twice. Grand National Association Games: Chicago (4) at Philadelphia (6): Bill McLean (37-6.0) (8-6) over Bill Moore (27-5.7) (3-3). McClean allowed 8 hits, no walks and struck out 5. 3B Jesse Jaeger (36-7.5) had 4 hits with a double, scored a run and knocked 1 in. For the Orioles, C Al Cannon (38-5.4) had 3 hits with his 2nd home run of the year. He scored twice and knocked in 2. And now his batting average stands at exactly .200. Onwards and upwards! Liberty League Games: Detroit (5) at Troy (0): William McLeod (24-5.6) (1-0) over Harry Lamb (28-6.4) (7-4). McLeod allowed 8 hits, walked 1 and struck out 2. Omaha Mutuals (18-8 .692 tied for 1st place in the Grand National Association) at Baltimore Orioles (8-18 .308 10 GB 7th place) We start a 4-game series with our sibling expansion team. They are playing more like an expansion team should, even though they also signed a really good pitcher and more established hitters than we did. We won 2 of 3 in Omaha the week before last. Yurkovich is a gamer; he's going to pitch, even though he is suffering from a cold. I hope the sneezing affects his control. Lee Sprague, Omaha (23-3.5) (R 12-4 1.81 5.9-1.0-4.2 H-BB-K/9) vs. Pop Yurkovich, Balt. (31-5.6) (R 8-7 2.45 8.9-1.5-5.2) Won - 10 to 7 For the 4th straight game, we scored at least 8 runs. On the flip side, for the 4th straight game, we made at least 6 errors with 7 today. Neither Sprague nor Yurky were sharp today. We had 13 hits; the most since we tallied 15 in the each of the 1st 2 games of the season. 1B Frank Burnett (30-4.4) had 3 hits with a triple, scored a run and had an RBI. C Harry Farrell (31-5.6) had 3 hits, a walk, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs. 3B Warren Hogan (28-7.2) had 2 hits with 2 runs scored and 2 RBIs. Sprague had 2 hits and an RBI. Grand National Association Games: Kansas City (12) at Pittsburgh (5): Fred Barrow (31-4.7) (9-4) over Mark Humphry (38-5.9) (3-6). Barrow allowed 7 hits, no walks and struck out 2. CF Connie Frenette (28-4.7) hit 3 triples to set a new GNA record and tie the major league mark. He scored 3 runs and had 4 RBIs. Chicago (3) at Providence (2): Pete Rinehart (24-6.2) (7-4) over Egyptian Hooker (35-3.9) (3-7). Rinehart scored a run and knocked in 2 with a double, so he was at least partly responsible for all 3 Chicago runs on offense. In the box, he gave up 10 hits, walked 2 and struck out 3. Brooklyn (4) at Philadelphia (7): Bill McLean (37-6.0) (9-6) over Dick Cole (29-5.9) (7-7). McClean allowed 7 hits, walked 2 and struck out 4. With his bat, he had 2 hits with a double, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. Liberty League Games: Cincinnati (6) at Troy (5): John Stevens (26-8.2) (9-5) over John Bendickson (31-6.0) (3-8). Stevens allowed 7 hits, no walks and struck out 5. Rookie RF Joe Turner (23-6.6) had 4 hits with a double, stole a base, scored a run and drove 1 in. New York (8) at Utica (9): Tom Marshman (32-4.7) (8-6) over Jack Roberts (31-6.1) (9-9). 3B Charlie Taylor (28-5.2) had 3 hits and 2 RBIs. CF Sam Selke (30-7.4) had 3 hits with a triple, stole 2 bases, scored 3 runs and had 2 RBIs. For New York, SS Ed Glass (23-4.5) had 3 hits with 2 doubles and scored twice. Detroit (5) at Washington (7): Will Taylor (36-7.9) (3-2) over Rufus Lee (32-3.9) (6-5). SS Bill Scott (27-3.5) had 2 hits, stole a base, scored 3 times and had an RBI. St. Louis (3) at Boston (5): Joe Peters (27-4.9) (11-2) over Tom Zurla (31-7.3) (4-5). Peters allowed 6 hits, 1 walk and struck out 5. 2B Bill Gordon (26-3.7) had 2 doubles, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. Last edited by Questdog; 03-20-2015 at 10:18 PM. |

Manager/LF Silver Borresen (29-6.9), playing in his second game of the season because of an injury, had 3 hits, stole a base, scored a run and knocked 1 in. CF Jake Howard (24-4.6) had 3 hits with 2 doubles, walked once, scored a run and had an RBI. New York (6) at Utica (7): Willis Kornfield (30-6.0) (6-4) over George Taylor (28-3.9) (5-4). Kornfield allowed 7 hits, no walks and struck out 4. Down 5 to 2, New York scored 4 times in the top of the 9th to take the lead, but gave up 2 in the bottom of the inning to lose. The winning run was knocked in by C Fred Smith (28-6.8). He had 3 hits, a walk and scored 2 runs. Detroit (3) at Washington (0): William Rose (32-4.9) (6-9) over Dan Burton (28-4.9) (4-7). Rose went 6 innings, allowed 2 hits, no walks and struck out 2. He pulled a muscle running out a double he hit and had to quit the game. He'll miss a week or two. William McLeod (24-5.6) pitched the final 3 innings to complete the shutout. St. Louis (3) at Boston (9): William Little (22-6.0) (1-0) over Freddy Wood (27-6.3) (4-6). Boston only had 8 hits and St. Louis only made 2 errors. They drew 4 walks, so scored 9 of 14 baserunners. |

Omaha Mutuals (21-8 .724 1st place in the Grand National Association) at Baltimore Orioles (8-21 .276 13 GB 8th place) Tom Lee, Omaha (25-6.0) (R 7-3 2.28 6.9-1.8-3.6 H-BB-K/9) vs. Hardy Rich, Balt. (39-6.1) (L 0-10 3.77 12.0-0.8-0.8) Won - 16 to 6 We set a new team high with 16 runs and 21 hits. And Baltimore made 9 more errors. They are not a good ball club, especially when Pop Yurkovich (31-5.6) is not pitching. He is still the only pitcher to win a game for them. He is 8-9 and the others are 0-13. Lee allowed 6 hits, walked 3 and struck out 2. He gave up a 3-run home run to C Al Cannon (38-5.4) ruined his pretty box score line. The home run was Cannon's 3rd of the season, the most in the Association. Everyone in our lineup had a hit, most had at least 2. 3B Warren Hogan (28-7.2) had 4 with a double, scored 3 runs and had 3 RBIs. 1B John Demick (30-5.7) also had 4, walked once, scored twice and drove in 3. 2B Charlie Smith (25-5.6) had 3 hits, scored a run and had 4 RBIs. Grand National Association Games: Kansas City (4) at Pittsburgh (1): Hosea Alexander (34-4.8) (10-3) over Mark Humphry (38-5.9) (4-7). Alexander allowed 5 hits, walked 2 and struck out 2. Humphry also allowed only 5 hits, walked none and struck out 3. But his Stogie teammates made 8 errors, while Alexander's Cowboy mates only made 2. Chicago (2) at Providence (11): Ted Ryther (29-4.3) (6-11) over Charlie Moss (42-6.3) (1-4). Ryther allowed only 4 hits, walked 3 and struck out 5. The Grays pounded Moss with 15 hits, 3 of them home runs, until he was removed from the box in the 7th inning. 2B Jack Green (30-5.5) had a double and a triple, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs. 3B Joe Hayes (39-3.3) had 2 hits with a home run, scored twice and knocked in 3. Brooklyn (3) at Philadelphia (13): Bill McLean (37-6.0) (10-7) over Nate Kendall (34-5.4) (2-3). McClean allowed 6 hits, walked 2 and struck out 8. LF Jim Hudson (29-6.2) had 5 hits with 2 doubles, stole a base, scored 3 runs and had an RBI. Liberty League Games: Cincinnati (8) at Troy (6): Charlie Branham (23-4.2) (5-4) over Harry Lamb (28-6.4) (8-5). C Jake Houghton (32-5.4) had 3 hits, scored 3 runs and had an RBI. New York (4) at Utica (3): Jack Roberts (31-6.1) (11-9) over Willis Kornfield (30-6.0) (6-5). SS Ed Glass (23-4.5) had 3 hits with a double, scored a run and had an RBI. Utica's C Fred Smith (28-6.8) had 2 hits and threw out all 4 runners that tried to steal a base off him. Detroit (9) at Washington (0): William McLeod (24-5.6) (2-0) over Dan Burton (28-4.9) (5-8). McLeod allowed 2 hits, no walks and struck out 5. CF Joe Kraus (26-7.9) had 4 hits with a double, stole a base, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs. LF Jesse Spencer (32-5.0) had 4 hits with 3 doubles, scored twice and knocked in 4. St. Louis (2) at Boston (6): Joe Peters (27-4.9) (12-3) over Freddy Wood (27-6.3) (4-7). Wood had to leave the game with a sore arm and will mos the next 3 or 4 weeks. Manager/1B Pete Bucolo (35-4.1) had 2 doubles, a walk, scored a run and knocked in 2. He looks to have settled on Joe Peters as his number one boxman over 2-time defending Hurler Trophy winner, Charlie Morlock (33-6.7). Morlock is only 6-7 with a 4.11 ERA this season. |

Well, if someone can fire them a long range, then a Cannon can.
Gotta stop with those puns. But I do like Pop Yurkovich. He seems to be a workhorse, biting his way through obstacles. I like that attitude.

Omaha Mutuals (22-8 .733 1st place in the Grand National Association) at Providence Grays (10-20 .333 12 GB 7th place) We begin a 4-game series at Providence today. We swept them at our place last month in 3 games. When the Grays signed Abe Everette (34-6.9) from the Troy Haymakers last year, they became the preeminent club in the Grand National Association. Abe got off to a 10-3 start and Providence was in first place and looked like they'd end up with a dominating lead in the pennant race. But Everette was injured and missed the rest of the season and the Grays quickly faded into the second division. This spring, hope was renewed with the return of Everette, but he suffered another injury in the practice games and will not pitch until this season is almost over, if then. Providence's hopes once again sank into oblivion and if not for the presence of the expansion Orioles, they'd be in last place. Egyptian is not your stereotypical Hooker with a heart of gold. He won his first 3 starts of the year and then lost 7 in a row, but he won his last one. Lee Sprague, Omaha (23-3.5) (R 14-4 1.83 6.3-1.0-4.2 H-BB-K/9) vs. Egyptian Hooker, Prov. (35-3.9) (L 4-7 2.23 10.4-1.5-2.4) Lost - 10 to 6 We out-hit the Grays 15 to 12, but we made 7 errors to their 2. They scored in each of the first 5 innings and we were never in the game. Hooker was not that sharp in the box, but at the plate he had 2 hits, took a walk and scored 2 runs. RF Hank Roberts (24-3.0) had 3 hits for us and scored 3 runs. 3B Rube Ford (32-5.1) had 3 hits with a double and an RBI. Grand National Association Games: Brooklyn (0) at Pittsburgh (1): Mark Humphry (38-5.9) (5-7) over Dick Cole (29-5.9) (8-8). Humphry allowed 4 hits, no walks and struck out 1. Cole allowed only 5 hits, walked 1 and struck out 1. C Cliff Robinson (25-6.1) had a double and a triple and scored the only run of the game. Kansas City (6) at Philadelphia (11): Bill McLean (37-6.0) (11-7) over Fred Barrow (31-4.7) (9-6). After getting 5 hits last game, LF Jim Hudson (29-6.2) had 3 hits with 2 triples in this game. he scored twice and knocked in 2. For the Cowboys, 2B Jack Grossman (27-7.1) had a double and a home run, a walk, scored 2 runs and knocked in 4. Chicago (3) at Baltimore (5): Pop Yurkovich (31-5.6) (9-9) over Pete Rinehart (24-6.2) (7-6). RF Jack Morgan (26-7.8) had 3 hits with a double, but no runs or RBIs. Liberty League Games: New York (6) at Troy (2): Jack Roberts (31-6.1) (12-9) over John Bendickson (31-6.0) (3-10). I can't bear to watch it anymore.... Roberts allowed 6 hits, but walked 4 and struck out 2. The game was tied at 1 apiece going into the 9th. Bendy had only allowed 5 hits and 1 run through 8, but walked 2 and gave up 4 hits in the 9th as New York scored 5 times. Cincinnati (6) at Utica (4): John Stevens (26-8.2) (11-5) over Tom Marshman (32-4.7) (8-8). Manager/CF Fleet Wilcox (26-4.9) had 3 hits with a triple and his 4th home run of the season. He scored twice. St. Louis (6) at Washington (9): Will Taylor (36-7.9) (4-2) over Tom Zurla (31-7.3) (5-6). 3B Sam Clark (32-4.7) had 2 hits and 2 walks, scored a run and had an RBI. For the Maroons, CF Jimmy Sanders (26-6.8) had 4 hits, stole 2 bases, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. Detroit (5) at Boston (3) in 10 innings: Rufus Lee (32-3.9) (7-6) over Joe Peters (27-4.9) (12-4). Lee allowed 9 hits, walked 2 and struck out 5. Peters allowed 9 hits, walked 2 and struck out 8. |

Omaha Mutuals (25-9 .735 1st place in the Grand National Association) at Kansas City Cowboys (22-12 .647 3 GB 2nd place) We start a big 3 game showdown with our nearest rival, both geographically and in the standings, today. A sweep by either team would be tremendous. We have enjoyed our run against some suspect ball clubs and I think we may be in for a reality check in this series and the next, when we play the defending champion Brooklyn Gladiators. This is the first time we have played the Cowboys this season. Lee Sprague, Omaha (23-3.5) (R 16-5 1.92 6.7-0.9-4.2 H-BB-K/9) vs. Fred Barrow, K. C. (31-4.7) (R 10-6 2.73 9.4-1.2-4.0) Won - 10 to 7 We did not get out first hit until the 5th inning. Going into the bottom of the 8th, we were leading 3 to 1, but 3 Cowboy runs saw us head to the 9th, down 4 to 3. 5 hits and 3 errors in the final inning gave us 7 runs! In the bottom of the 9th, they got 3 hits and we made 2 errors to let them score 3 times and give us a consternation. Our 3, 4 and 5 hitters, RF Hank Roberts (24-30), LF Dave Cunningham (27-5.4) and 1B Frank Burnett (30-4.4) went 6 for 14, with each of them garnering 2 hits and 2 RBIs. Grand National Association Games: Chicago (14) at Brooklyn (9): Pete Rinehart (24-6.2) (9-6) over Dick Cole (29-5.9) (8-10). CF Tommy Casale (23-3.7) had 3 hits with 2 doubles, drew a walk, scored a run and had 3 RBIs to raise his season average to .141. He hit .262 as a rookie last season. 1B Henry Ivy (32-7.2) had 4 hits, scored a run and had 3 RBIs. LF Candy Simpson (24-6.8) had 4 hits with 2 doubles, a walk, scored a run and had 3 RBIs. For the Gladiators, 1B Henry Young (29-5.7) had 4 hits and 2 RBIs. Chicago has scored 3 runs in their last 2 games. Philadelphia (10) at Providence (4): Bill McLean (37-6.0) (12-8) over Tom Garrett (37-4.9) (0-4). McClean allowed 5 hits, walked 2 and struck out 1. C Willie Ticknor (26-3.1) had 4 hits with a double and scored 2 runs. Pittsburgh (6) at Baltimore (7): Levi Giddens (31-4.8) (1-2) over Mark Humphry (38-5.9) (7-8). Giddens allowed 7 hits, walked 3 and struck out 3 to earn the first win of the season for a Baltimore pitcher not named Pop Yurkovich. Humphry allowed 8 hits, walked 1 and struck out 2. CF Billy Moore (27-7.0) had 3 hits, stole 2 bases, scored a run and knocked in 2. Liberty League Games: Detroit (5) at Cincinnati (6): John Stevens (26-8.2) (12-6) over Rufus Lee (32-3.9) (8-7). Stevens allowed 7 hits, no walks and struck out 3. Lee allowed 7 hits, walked 4 and struck out 7. St. Louis (5) at New York (8): Jack Roberts (31-6.1) (13-10) over Tom Zurla (31-7.3) (5-8). Roberts allowed 8 hits, 2 walks and struck out 3. C Everett Hrdlicka (32-7.0) had 2 doubles and scored a run. CF Hi Lynch (32-7.5) had 3 hits, scored a run and had 2 RBIs.
