July Notes
Hubie Brooks is held hitless on July 8, halting the 23 year old's 38-Game Hitting Streak - a league record! ![]() July 9 After throwing a No-Hitter earlier in the season, Clayton Richard is dealt to the Rafter River Rats. The Copper Basin Miners traded the 29 year old for a couple minor leaguers (Nick "Cap" Adams & Frank Krause). Richard had a 7-5 mark with a 2.80 ERA at the time. July 11 21 year old SS Ed Romero of the Rural Vale Roughnecks bashes three homeruns in a 10-6 win over the Delano Possums. Romero drives in 6 on the day. July 31 Budding star Willie Mays (20) hits for the cycle as his Madisonville Tornadoes edges out a 6-4 victory. August 15 Manny Ramirez singles in a run to become the first player in the league to reach 500 career RBI. Disabled List 23 year old Tim Raines season gets cut short as he tears ankle ligaments in an early August game. Raines (batting .293/8/53) is expected to be out of action for 4-5 months. Jim Wynn goes on the DL for the 2nd time in as many months and is expected to miss the remainder of the season as well. Wynn (batting .274/14/62) sustained a concussion. September Notes LF Billy Williams of the Ducktown Mallards drives in 3 runs on September 4 to become the first Hiwassee League player to record 500 career RBI. The Madisonville Tornadoes are dealt a blow in their hunt for the pennant as 24 year old third-sacker Harry Lord suffers a herniated disc and is expected to be out around 5 weeks. Harry is hitting .328 with 89 runs scored at the time of the injury. ![]() The Madisonville Tornadoes were able to overcome the loss of Harry Lord as they won their last 9 games of the season to catch and pass the Citico Creek Copperheads and take the pennant. The Snappers once again took the Hiwassee League and are poised to defend their Series crown. |

Series Preview
Madisonville Tornadoes Team Summary ![]() Turtletown Snappers Team Summary ![]() Madisonville's Primary Lineup ![]() This could be the first of many trips here for the Tornadoes if the heart of their order has anything to do with it. RF Fred Lynn is only 23 and rookie CF Willie Mays is a mere 20! Madisonville scores a lot of runs but doesn't like to give them up. This team looks good on paper, but it will be interesting to see how they do without Harry Lord. Turtletown's Primary Lineup ![]() At first glance this team doesn't look that solid, but taking a peak back at the league rankings tell a different story. First in R, AVG, RA, Starter's ERA and DEF - this may shape up to be a decent Series afterall. |

TBL Championship Series
Game 1 - Madisonville Tornadoes @ Turtletown Snappers Turtletown takes the early lead in the bottom of the 2nd when Madisonville SP Sonny Siebert issues a 2-out walk to Jim Lefebvre, then serves up a deep double off the bat of Drew Stubbs. Both teams trade zeroes until the bottom of the 6th when Ron Swoboda leads off with a single and later comes across the plate when Siebert mishandles a come-backer, Snappers up 2-0. Turtletown then doubles their lead in the 8th as Stubbs and Buck Weaver both single in runs off reliever Willard Schmidt. Madisonville finally gets on the board in the top of the 9th as Ron Fairly singles in Fred Lynn, but Omar Daal retires the next two guys to preserve the win. Turtletown 4, Madisonville 1 2B: O. Daal (TUR), D. Stubbs (TUR) W: O. Daal 9IP, 5H, ER, 3K L: S. Siebert Game 2 - Madisonville Tornadoes @ Turtletown Snappers Madisonville strikes first in the top of the 2nd as Hal Wagner singles in Babe Ellison. The score remains 1-0 until the 6th when singles by Lynn, Willie Mays, Fairly, Wagner and Milt Bolling expands the lead to 4-0. The Snappers finally respond in the bottom of the frame as Kevin Seitzer laces a triple to score Charlie Smith. Another triple in the 7th, this time by Stubbs, drives in 2 more and brings Turtletown to within 1. The Tornadoes were not to be denied this time though, as Jeff Stone and Ping Bodie both drive in runs in the 9th to put the game away and tie the Series at 1, MAD 6, TUR 3 2B: R Reichardt (MAD), B Horner (TUR) 3B: K Seitzer (TUR), D Stubbs (TUR) W: N Garvin 8IP, 4H, 3ER, 2K L: M Grant Game 3 - TUR @ MAD Madisonville looks to build off Game 2's momentum as Babe Ellison singles in Fairly, then later scores on a Pedro Astachio single to open up a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the 2nd. The Snappers score 1 in the 5th to half the lead as Stubbs drives in Lefebvre. Turtletown's offense then springs to life in the 8th as Stan Lopata singles in Seitzer, then Dale Long follows with a 3-run homerun to seal the deal. A 4-spot in the inning gives the Snappers a 5-2 lead, which would be the final score. Turtletown goes up 2-1 in the Series. 2B: J Lefebvre (TUR) 3B: R Fairly (MAD) HR: D Long (TUR) W: D Driscoll 9IP, 6H, 2ER, K L: W Schmidt Game 4 - TUR @ MAD Turtletown scores 2 in the 4th as Norm Miller triples with Swoboda on base, then tags up on a Lefebvre sac fly for a 2-0 lead. Madisonville finally puts a run on the board in the 7th as Fairly singles in Mays, 2-1 Snappers. The Tornadoes then plate 4 in the 8th as Bodie, Mays, Lynn and Fairly all pick up RBIs. Turtletown mounts a comeback in the 9th as Buck Weaver clubs a 2-run homerun, but it's not enough as Madisonville squeaks out a 5-4 win to even up the Series at 2. 2B: F Carroll 2 (TUR) 3B: N Miller (TUR) HR: B Weaver (TUR) W: S Siebert 8IP, 7H, 2ER, 4K L: O Daal Game 5 - TUR @ MAD Turtletown goes up 1-0 in the 2nd as Miller tags up and scores on a SF by Weaver. Madisonville answers in the bottom of the frame as Fairly tags a 2-run HR to put his team up 2-1. The Snappers retained the lead in the 5th though as Horner and Swoboda drive in a run each followed by a 2-run single off the bat of Miller to go up 5-2. Madisonville puts up another run in the 7th to pull within 2 as Ellison drives in Mays on a SF. Turtletown refuses to relinquish the lead though as they tack on another in the 8th off a Buck Weaver single. The Tornadoes continue to scrap though, scoring 2 more off a Bodie double and Lynn single to make it a 1-run game. That's where it ended up though as Turtletown wins 6-5 to go up 3-2 in the Series. HR: Fairly (MAD) W: M Grant 7IP, 4H, 3ER, K L: N Garvin Game 6 - MAD @ TUR Miller knocks in another with a sac fly for a 1-0 Turtletown lead in the first. Madisonville ties it up in the 2nd though as Wagner drives in Fairly. The Tornadoes then strike for 3 more in the 3rd as Mays drives in Bodie, then Fairly later drives in Mays and Lynn for a 4-1 lead. The Snappers pick up a run off an error in the 5th, then another in the 6th as Stubbs hits a solo homer. After seeing their lead reduced to 1, Madisonville explodes for 4 in the 7th as Bodie singles in a run, followed by a 2-run Mays double, then later a Fairly single. The last 2 innings were scoreless as Madisonville ties up the Series with an 8-3 victory. HR: D Stubbs (TUR) W: P Astacio 7IP, 5H, 3ER, K L: Driscoll Game 7 - MAD @ TUR After 3 scoreless, Madisonville opens up the scoring in the 4th as Ping Bodie doubles, then races home on an error. Still a 1-0 game, the Tornadoes score another in the 7th as Rick Reichardt singles in Ron Fairly for a 2-0 lead. That would be all Sonny Siebert would need, as he shut Turtletown down to give Madisonville its first Championship! W: S Siebert 8.2IP, 2H, 4K L: O Daal (Sorry for the reduced writeups on the last few games. I ran out of break time!) |

1949 Chilhowee League Preseason Predictions
![]() The reigning champs, the Madisonville Tornadoes, are picked to finish 2nd this year behind the Sequoyah Chiefs. While Madisonville boasts an OF that contains Willie Mays and Fred Lynn, the Chiefs' success lies largely on pitching. In fact, they have 3 of the predicted Top 10 pitchers in the league this year. 1949 Hiwassee League Preseason Predictions ![]() Although the Turtletown Snappers come into the season as the defending HL champions, they aren't even expected to play .500 ball. The Delano Possums are predicted to win the pennant this year on the strength of pitching, as well, as they boast 3 of their own in the Top 10. |
