1946 Championship Preview - Belltown Bats vs Copper Basin Miners

Belltown boasts 2 of the top pitchers in the league in Connie Johnson and Pete Conway. They ranked 1st in the CL in Starter's ERA, Runs against, and Defense. Throw in 1st in AVG and 2nd in run's scored and you've got a pretty solid team. One chink in the armor though is that leading hitter Buster Hoover will miss the Series due to an injury. We'll see how the team responds to his absence.

The Copper Basin Miners are solid all around, as well. They boast the #1 Starter's ERA, Run's Against and Defense while on the offensive side leading in AVG, Runs and OBP. These 2 teams appear on paper to match up pretty well with each other, but we'll see how it plays out.

Well that's why we play the games, folks. What looked to be the makings of a tight series on paper ended up being a laugher. Sure, 3 of the games were decided by a total of 4 runs, but I didn't see the sweep coming! And Belltown without their leading hitter! And to think, the Bats had to come from behind on the last day of the season - TWICE - to even make it here! Another example of a team getting hot at the right moment.

Congrats, Bats!

I think I'm going to have to have a change of allegiance here and start cheering for the Saints since they have Gwynn. That man is my hero and helped me become such a better hitter And now they have Mays? Oh yes, they are now my team lol

Notable Performance:

On May 6th, Lloyd Moseby hit for the cycle while leading his Hopewell Saints over the Gudger Mad Dogs, 12-9. Moseby went 4-5 on the day with 4 runs scored but only 1 RBI. Lloyd did it the hard way, completing the cycle with a triple in the 9th inning!

July '47

What happens when your team is the runaway favorite and they underperform? Your manager gets the axe! That's right, Sequoyah fires their manager in July! The GM stated the team was just going in a different direction - I assume he means up!

July 29, 1947

David Justice is now a Possum!

The Bats are going back to the Series! After winning it all last year, Belltown thumbed their noses at the experts who picked them to finish 24 back, earning a chance to become the league's first multi-winner. They will go up against the Turtletown Snappers. Series Preview will be posted later.

GM 1 - Turtletown Snappers @ Belltown Bats

Both pitchers were in top form as they both completed what they started. Jack Sanford bested his opposer in every category - hits (2/6), walks (4/5), strikeouts (4/1)...Except for one. In the bottom of the 6th inning, Sanford served up a 2-run dinger to Dave Marshall - breaking a scoreless tie. That was one of only two hits Sanford gave up, but it plated the only two runs of the game. Bats' SP Mike O'Neill scattered 6 hits as he recorded a shutout and gave Belltown a 1-0 Series lead.

GM 2 - Turtletown Snappers @ Belltown Bats

Turtletown avenges their Game 1 loss as their bats wake up for 6 runs in a 6-3 win. LF Ron Fairly helps lead the way with a solo homerun as he turns in a 4-2-3-2 performance. 3B Bob Horner knocks in 2 as well for the Snappers. Pete Conway takes the loss, giving up 6R/4ER in 8.2IP. Denny Driscoll records the complete game W. Series tied 1-1.

GM 3 - Belltown Bats @ Turtletown Snappers

Belltown gets on the board in the top of the 3rd as Jerry May singles off Turtletown’s Mark Grant, then moves to third on a Sac Bunt and groundout before coming home on Dave Marshall’s single. The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the 8th as Miguel Dilone singles off reliever Randy Wells, then races around to score on a Ron Swoboda double. The Bats answer right back in the 9th as Reed Johnson singles off reliever Gene Nelson and later scores on Archi Cianfrocco’s single. Bert Abbey comes in and sits the Snappers down in order to preserve the 2-1 victory and give Belltown a 2-1 Series lead.

GM 4 - Belltown Bats @ Turtletown Snappers

Game 4 featured a matchup of Game 1 starters Sanford and O’Neill. Both pitchers once again excelled, as the game was still scoreless after 8-1/2 innings. Turtletown returns the favor this time, as they score the walkoff win with three consecutive singles by Norm Miller, Ron Fairly and Jim Lefebvre to pin the loss on Game 1 winner Jack Sanford. Series tied at 2.

GM 5 - Belltown Bats @ Turtletown Snappers

Belltown enters the 9th down 2 runs before recording 4 hits, including a triple off the bat of Zoilo Versalles, to tie the game and send it into extra innings. In the top of the 10th the Bats explode for 4 runs, the most damage coming off a 2-run single by Dave Marshall. Belltown records 9 hits and 6 runs in the last 2 innings to go up 3-2 in the Series.

GM 6 - Turtletown Snappers @ Belltown Bats

Turtletown gets on the board first as Ron Swoboda clubs a 3-run dinger in the 3rd inning, as the Snappers coast to an 8-4 win to force a Game 7. C Fred Carroll joined the multi-rbi parade with two doubles that produced 2 runs.

GM 7 - Turtletown Snappers @ Belltown Bats

Gm 7 once again matches Sanford and O’Neill up. Both guys have turned in two stellar performances in the Series, but each only has a 1-1 record to show for it. O’Neill begins the game by giving Miguel Dilone a free pass. Fred Carroll, Bob Horner and Norm Miller follow with consecutive singles to plate two and give Turtletown the early lead. The Snappers squeeze out one more run in the 1st as Horner tags up on a Jim Lefebvre fly to LF to give Sanford a 3 run lead before he ever toes the rubber.
Sanford says “Thank you much, that will be plenty!” as he gives up only 3 hits over 7 innings before giving way to Gene Nelson, who matches Sanford’s output over the next 2 frames to give Turtletown a 3-0 victory and their first Series Title!

I have some bad news for Sundance...the Hopewell Saints were unable to sign Willie Mays and he went back into the draft! With the number 1 pick in the 1947 Draft, the Madisonville Tornadoes selects Willie Mays!

Hopewell didn't do so well with their first round pick this go-around, as they spent their 2nd overall on Bob Bescher. But hey, he should be easy to sign!

1948 Preseason Predictions

Wow. The Belltown Bats just can't get any respect. After winning the Series in '46, the so-called experts predicted the Bats to finish towards the bottom of the pack - only to see them take the pennant once again. And now, though they did lose the Series to the Turtletown Snappers, Belltown is now picked to be below .500 and come in next-to-last place. It will be interesting to see how much motivation this Bulletin Board material gives them!

Rookie Willie Mays will play next to Fred Lynn in the Madisonville Tornadoes outfield. Not too shabby a combination, there.

The defending champion Snappers are predicted to finish 5 games back. Looks like they're expected to have a legitimate shot at repeating.

April Notes:

Two young up-and-comers are injured - 24 year old CF Willie McGee of the Rafter River Rats (broken kneecap, 7-8 months) and 22 year old RH Dizzy Dean of the Ducktown Mallards (shoulder inflammation, 4-5 months).

May Notes:

Two No Hitters are recorded.

Copper Basin's Clayton Richard threw up zeroes in the hit column against the opposing Rafter River Rats as his team squeaks out a 1-0 victory.

Delano's Abner Powell blanked the Mudhole Mudcats on May 10 in a 19-0 thrashing. Powell fanned 3 and was only 1 walk away from a Perfect Game!

June Notes:

On June 2, Gudger C Johnny Pramesa hits for the cycle while batting in 5 runs in a 12-1 win over the Hopewell Saints. As luck would have it, the next day Pramesa fractures his wrist, sidelining him for an estimated 6 weeks. Johnny was hitting .325/11/36 at the time.

On the injury front, 2 teams picked to finish at or near the top of their respective divisions were dealt blows as their star players go down.

Sequoyah Chiefs RF Manny Ramirez suffers an oblique strain while running the bases and is expected to be out for 6 weeks. Manny was hitting .346/14/49 at the time.

Rural Vale Roughnecks 1B Jack Fournier suffers a concussion and is expected to miss 4-5 months. Fournier was hitting .311/5/27 at the time.

All Star Break Standings

As expected, the Belltown Bats are once again proving the naysayers wrong as they are only 2GB at the break. In the HL, the Snappers are looking for a repeat as they have placed a bit of distance between themselves and the 2nd place Copper Basin Miners.
