1st July 1874 The fans of the Brown Stockings continue to see the team give a good showing in the defence of their AL pennant. The team had an average month for them going 5-5 in June. This dropped them into second place 1 game behind the leaders in the AL table. Th batting had a poor month during June, scoring only 41 runs. The best of this poor showing was Short Stop Tom Barlow. Barlow started 8 of the 10 games he played and had 40 at bats in these games. These at bats produced 13 hits, 4 runs and 2 RBI's for an average of .325 The pitching worked hard during the month but couldn't get the wins against the poor batting numbers. George Zettlein started all 10 games and claimed an ERA of 2.29. He pitched 74.2 innings to get this ERA and gave up 100 hits and 19 earned runs. The team gave up a total of 67 runs. 1st August 1874 The fans of the Canaries are starting to see their team take control of the Al pennant race as they moved 3 games clear in July. The team picked up 7 wins and only 2 losses during the month to move them clear. The batting was quieter than last month scoring 60 runs. The best of the batting came from Catcher Fergy Malone. Malone had 41 at bats in 9 game starts. These at bats produced 16 hits, 7 runs and 9 RBI's. This gave him an average of .390 for the month. The pitching of Cherokee Fisher was the reason for the good month as he picked up the AL Pitcher of the Month again. He won this award with an ERA of 3.38 from 8 game starts. 1st August 1874 The fans of the Boston Red Stockings are really enjoying the MLB baseball season for once as their team still sits atop the NL table. The month of July saw them gain a 6-3 record which pushed them 3 games clear in the NL pennant race. The batting for the Reds Stockings managed 71 runs during July. The leading batter on the team was Catcher Mike McGreary. McGreary started all 9 games and had 45 at bats. These at bats produced 20 hits to give him an average of .444 for the month. He also claimed 6 runs and 6 RBI's. Bobby Mathews produced an excellent pitching performance during the month of July. He started all 9 games and pitched 75.1 innings. This work saw him give up 89 hits and 23 earned runs for an ERA of 2.75. This performance was enough to be awarded the NL Pitcher of the Month award for July The all star selection threw up a surprise in that very few of the NL leading Red Stockings players were selected. The NL All Star squad included the following Red Stockings players. Pitchers Bobby Mathews, Hugh Campbell and Joe McDermott, Third Baseman Levi Meyerle and Right Fielder Tim Murnane Of these selected players Levi Meyerle and Bobby Mathews were chosen as starters in the 10-7 loss. 1st August 1874 The fans of the Atlantics can at last show their faces as their team saw an improvement in July. They still lie last in the NL, 13 games behind the leaders, but they managed to pick up a steady 5 wins in July with only 4 losses. The batting still struggled a little in July as they scored 56 runs. The best of them came in the form of Third Baseman Bill Boyd. Boyd started all 9 games with 40 at bats. These at bats saw him claim 16 hits, 7 runs and 7 RBI's for an average of .400. The pitching was stronger in July than it was in June. John Greason was the main starter in July with 7 starts and 53.1 innings pitched. These innings saw him gain an ERA of 2.53 while giving up 62 hits and 15 earned runs. Ed Stratton started the other 2 games and pitched a fairly heavy 27.2 innings during the month with an ERA of 5.20. The team gave up a total of 75 runs. The surprise of the month was the amount of players that were called up by the NL All Star team. The players called up included Pitcher John Greason and Ed Stratton, Catcher Dick Higham, First Baseman Jim Carleton, Second Baseman Wes Fisler, Third Baseman Bill Boyd and Short Stop Davy Force. The team managed only 3 wins during the month with 6 losses. This saw them fall 3 games behind the leading Boston Red Stocking while falling to second place in the NL table. The batting saw the team gain 62 runs in July as they struggled a little. The form man with the bat was Rookie Centre Fielder Steve Brady. Brady started 7 games and had 22 at bats. These at bats saw him have 9 hits and claim 4 runs and 8 RBI's. This earned him an average of .409 for the month. The NL voters decided these figures were good enough for him to earn the NL Rookie of the Month award. The Pitching struggled a little in July as Jim Britt saw a tougher month. 1st August 1874 Fans of the Cincinnati Reds are a little worried that their team may be losing their way a little as the season continues. The team managed only 4 wins in July against 5 Losses. This saw them in 3rd place in the NL table 4 games behind the leading Boston Red Stockings. The batting scored 69 runs during the month. It is difficult to find who was the best with the bat this month as can be seen in the voting for the NL Batter of the Month. Right Fielder John Radcliff earned the award but only played 4 games in July, all as a starter. He managed an amazing 11 hits from 18 at bats to gain an average of .611 with 4 runs and 6 RBI's. The best of the starters who played all 9 games was Joe Start who ended the month with an average of .341 The pitching in the month of July was all about Bill Stearns again. 1st August 1874 The fans of the Cleveland Blues are getting used to seeing their team slowly fade away during the season and they are experiencing this situation again. The team managed only 3 wins during July and 6 losses. This left them bottom of the AL table a full 9 games behind the leaders. The batting saw only 53 runs during July which didn't help the win count. The best of the batting came from First Baseman Al Reach. Reach took 27 at bats in 9 game starts as he earned an average of .370. This included 10 hits, 4 runs and 6 RBI's. The pitching was came from behind the arm of Cy Bentley again this month with an ERA of 2.62 for the month. He did this from 8 game starts and 58.1 innings pitched. He gave up 64 hits and 17 runs during this work. His workload did drop during the month and his tiredness can be seen with the fact that he had a slight hamstring tendinitis towards the end of the month. This meant that Candy Cummings gained the last start of the month. Bentley will be back in 5 days as it is only a slight injury. This record still meant that the team lost ground in the chase for the AL Pennant as they fell 3 games behind the Baltimore Canaries in 2nd place. The batting scored a fairly low 53 runs during the month. The best batting came from Second baseman Charlie Sweasy. Sweasy produced an excellent July after missing most of the start of the season through injury. He started all 9 games and had 31 at bats. These at bats produced 13 hits, 7 runs and 3 RBI's. The team picked up 7 wins and 3 losses during August to leave them 7 games clear at the top of the AL table. The batting came back to strong form in August with 85 runs scored. The best of the batting came from Second Baseman John Hatfield. Hatfield started all 10 games and had 49 at bats. These at bats produced 16 hits for an average of .327. He also gained 12 runs and 12 RBI's. These figures earned him the AL Batter of the Month award. Cherokee Fisher had another solid month with the ball as he started 9 games and pitched 78.1 innings. The fans hope the team can turn this round and get back onto a winning track. The batting scored a fairly low 56 runs during the month. The bright spark in the lack lustre batting was Third Baseman Levi Meyerle. Meyerle started all 10 games and used these to pick up an average of .400 with 16 hits. He also picked up a solid 10 runs and 6 RBI's including a home run. The pitching of Bobby Mathews suffered in August as he tired during the month. This leaves them in last place in the NL 14 games behind the leaders. The batting struggled again in August with only 51 runs scored. The only real performer with a bat in August was Short Stop Davy Force. Force started all 10 games and had 47 at bats. These at bats saw him get 16 hits for an average of .340. He also claimed 5 runs and 2 RBI's. The pitching also struggled during August. John Greason started 8 games and pitched 57 innings for an ERA of 4.74 with 82 hits and 30 earned runs against him. Ed Stratton started 2 games and played in 7 for 28 innings pitched with an ERA of 5.46. The team gave up a total 76 runs. Second Baseman Wes Fisler sprained his ankle late in the month. 1st September 1874 The White Stockings fans are again looking at a race for the NL pennant as their team closed the gap on the leading Boston Red Stockings in August. The team claimed 7 wins against only 3 losses to leave them joint 1st in the NL table. The batting saw a strong performance as they scored 89 runs. The star of this showing was Catcher Deacon White. White scored an average of .455 from 20 hits in 44 at bats in 10 game starts. These starts also saw him score 16 runs and 8 RBI's. This excellent month saw the NL decide to award him the Batter of the Month award. Rookie Steve Brady continued his solid Rookie season with another 8 game starts in 9 games played for an average of .438. He earned another NL Rookie of the Month award in the season. 1st September 1874 The fans of the Athletics saw their chance of the AL pennant drop alarmingly during August. The team only managed 4 wins in August against 6 losses. This moved them into joint 2nd place in the AL table but a long 7 games behind the leaders with only 12 games to play. The batting scored 75 runs in August. The form batter in the month of August was Right Fielder John Glenn. Glenn started 8 of the 10 games he played and produced an average of .350 from 40 at bats. This came from 14 hits that also saw him score 9 runs and 5 RBI's Rookie John Peters continued his solid season as he had another 12 hits from 45 at bats in 10 game starts for an average of .267. This earned him another AL Rookie of the Month Award. Dick McBride had another excellent month with the ball. He started 9 of the games and earned an ERA of 1.92. This was made from 70.1 innings pitched, giving up 77 hits and 15 earned runs. The team gave up a total of 67 runs. Right Fielder Gat Stires strained his quad mid August and will miss 6 weeks of the season but should be back for the October games. 1st September 1874 The fans of the Brown Stockings are starting to resign themselves to the fact that they wont be repeating last seasons MLB Championship Series win. The team won a AL low 3 games in August along with the 7 losses the had. This saw them drop to 7 games behind the leading Baltimore Canaries as they sit second in the AL table. The batting saw a steady 68 runs scored in August. The batter with the best tally in August was First Baseman Jim Foran. Foran started all 10 games and had 45 at bats. He managed to claim 19 hits from the at bats to get an average of .422. He also scored 10 runs and 3 RBI's. The pitching is where the team saw issues as George Zettlein saw his worst month of the season. He started all 10 games and pitched 78.1 innings.
