Baseball Strategy Question

So i posted this….
If anyone has read "The Book: Playing the Percentages" by Tom Tango, I'm interested in the theory of saving 0.42 runs by never letting the pitcher bat in the lineup. Is there a way to hook starting pitchers, or any pitcher for that matter in a game every time he comes up to bat? I've looked at the strategy section in the game and all i can come up with is either pitch counts (which is NOT what I am looking for as the pitcher might get through 1 inning or 3 innings before his turn to bat) or sliding the pinch hit for pitcher slider to max, but even still this doesn't give me the most reliable way of pinch hitting for the pitcher EVERY single time.

On a related note, is there a way to force a "second starter" to pitch in a game. THe idea behind never letting the pitcher bat is to have a second starter piggy backing the first starter until the next time the pitcher comes up in the order…how would go about selecting this in game

I absolutely love this game and
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated….

THANKS!

over in general discussions, but was told that it would not be possible for the AI if i were to sim the games, and only if i played out each game. I feel this is a lacking in the current baseball strategy system in which there is a general inflexibility in playing the game how i want it to play. As a breeding ground for new ideas on optimal baseball strategy.

I think in future ootp versions having greater baseball strategy depth would allow players to truly customize the way their team plays rather than just collecting good players.

THANKS!!!

One more thing

In addition, I feel like the current bullpen role system is currently lacking in breadth of options of available to select from. It's hard to try out new "non-closer" or "closer by committee" systems in the current set-up!

The problem lies in the fact that the AI is built to simulate "normal baseball" and thus follows normal baseball logic. Extreme outliers to normal baseball logic, like pinch-hitting for your pitchers every single PA and piggybacking starters are so far outside of the norm for baseball that the AI can't handle it. AI is typically built to react something close to normal, and in this case, it's built to manage something close to how a human would manage. Piggyback starters is well, well outside of this norm.

So, in short, you would need to see a new AI engine or play out your games manually for this to be an option, probably.

There were multiple teams at certain points last year, like the Tigers, Athletics, Astros (I believe) and Cubs. This often occurs when an closer goes down or under-performs like Nathan/Jim Johnson. I like the idea of the closer by committee though.

In addition, even if it isnt being used in the mlb currently, why does that impose limits to my imagination? I love trying to figure out ways in order to maximize my teams output

The beauty of games like OOTP, football manager etc is that you get to run your team the way you always wanted it too. I just feel like having the option to do something within the most realistic simulation game (possible) would be amazing because you could see if the theory you had in your head translates.
