Thanks to both of you! I am impressed by Oakland to date this season in the post-Reggie Jackson era. He was one of the main reasons I wanted to start in 1976 - to see if he would have stayed with the Orioles longer than one season.

Ross Rolls over Brewers

California sends the Brewers to their eighth straight loss as starter Gary Ross (3-2, 2.97 ERA) throws a two-hit shutout in a 5-0 Angels victory.  Ross strikes out five batters for California and Bruce Bochte (.268) has three hits, who have won their last four games and seven of their last ten.  Milwaukee second baseman Don Money continues to struggle, going hit less and delivering just one hit in his last 23 at bats (.043).

"We have myself, Frank (Tanana), and Pete (Hartzell) pitching great right now.  It is only a matter of time before Nolan (Ryan) gets things going in the right direction.  And when he does - teams better get the hell out of the way." - Califonria starter Gary Ross.

American League News

Oakland Athletics at Baltimore Orioles
Baltimore defeats the Athletics 1-0 in 12 innings after terrific starts from Dick Boseman and Wayne Garland go for not as both are in the showers when Reggie Jackson scores on a Mark Belanger sacrifice fly.  Boseman (3.21 ERA) allows no runs and just five hits in 9 1/3 innings and striking out one while Garland (1.69 ERA) was equally effective, fanning 11 Oakland hitters in 9 1/3 innings of shutout baseball while being charged with nine hits. Belanger (.300) ends the day with three hits, including a double and two singles.

Kansas City Royals at Cleveland Indians
Al Fitzmorris (2-2, 2.72 ERA) and the Royals send Cleveland to their sixth consecutive loss as the right-hander gives one run on six hits in a 6-1 complete game victory.  Amos Otis (.325, 14 RBI) hits a pair of doubles, scoring twice and driving in two more while Tom Poquette (.500) delivers a rare feat of hitting to triples in a game.  George Hendrick (.225, 1 HR, 3 RBI) provides the only offense for the anemic Tribe, hitting a solo home run - his first of the season.  The Indians are dead last in the majors in batting average (.231), on-base percentage (.279) and runs scored (61),

Minnesota Twins at New York Yankees
Catfish Hunter (5-0, 2.61 ERA) gets his fifth win, but it takes a one-out, bases-loaded, run scoring single by Oscar Gamble (.300, 15 RBI) in the bottom of the ninth inning off of Minnesota closer Tom Johnson (1.64 ERA) to give the Yankees a 4-3 win over the Twins.  Graig Nettles (.267, 13 RBI) drives in two runs with four hits and Mickey Rivers (.330, 5 SB) adds three more hits while scoring three runs to lead the New York offense.  Hunter is charged with three runs on four hits in the complete game victory.  Bert Blyleven (3-3, 2.80 ERA) takes the loss after loading the bases for the game-winner by Gamble.

Cincinnati is led by starter Don Gullett (2.30 ERA), who strikes out 10 and allows five hits and one run in nine innings - but the game ends four innings later as Ellis Valentine (.237, 12 RBI) singles home Larry Biittner off of Reds reliever Manny Sarmiento (1-3, 2.35 ERA) in the bottom of the 13th inning for a 2-1 Montreal victory.  Pepe Frias (.500) hits a pair of doubles after coming into the game in the ninth inning for the Expos while Woodie Fryman (4.05 ERA) is charged with eight hits and one run in 7 1/3 innings in a no-decision.  Montreal relievers pitch 4 2/3 scoreless innings with Don Stanhouse (1-0, 0.00 ERA) pitching the final two for the win.  Dave Concepcion (.315) and Pete Rose (.354) each have three hits for Cincinnati in the loss.

New York Mets at Los Angeles Dodgers
New York right fielder Dave Kingman (.293, 7 HR, 18 RBI) has three hits and two home runs against starter Tommy John, the final blow being a two-run homer in the top of the ninth that proves to be the game winner.  John Matlack (4-2, 3.27 ERA) gains his second complete game of the season, giving up two runs on seven hits and handing the Mets their fourth win in a row.  Backup third baseman Ed Goodson (.238, 1 HR, 1 RBI) hits a solo home run and John (4-2, 2.81 ERA) permits six hits and four runs in nine innings in the loss.

He has been placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to April 30.
Recalled C Steve Yeager (.179, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 28 AB - AAA) from Triple A Albuquerque.
It looks like LA likes Yeager starting behind the plate more than Joe Ferguson, who will now start in right field - pushing Dusty Baker to the bench.

Houston Astros at Pittsburgh Pirates
The Astros take the first two games of the series with Pittsburgh after Pirates starter Jim Rooker (2-3, 3.42 ERA) walks in the decisive run in the top of the ninth inning to give Houston a 4-3 win.  The walk by Rooker was a result of an extra out thanks to an error on a foul ball by catcher Manny Sanguillen (his 1st).  Bob Watson (.319, 3 HR, 15 RBI) hits a two-run home run for Houston, Ken Forsch (1-0, 1 BS, 0.00 ERA) gets the win after blowing a save opportunity, and Bo McLaughlin (4 SV, 1.46 ERA) gains the save.

San Francisco Giants at Philadelphia Phillies
Bob Boone (.284, 1 HR, 9 RBI) leads off the bottom of the ninth inning with a walk-off home run off of San Francisco starter Ed Halicki (2-4, 4.32 ERA) to give the Phillies a 3-2 victory at Veterans Stadium.  Boone and Jay Johnstone (.361, 14 RBI) each have three hits while starter Steve Carlton (3-2, 2.61 ERA) goes the distance in getting the win, striking out eight and permitting two runs on nine hits.

Chambliss KO's Kansas City

Chris Chambliss
After splitting the series last weekend at Kansas City, New York looks to return the favor with interest this weekend.  Chris Chambliss (.250, 4 HR, 11 RBI) shows off a power display with three hits, two of which are three-run home runs as the Yankees shuts out Kansas City, 8-0.  Starter Ken Brett (4-1, 2.52 ERA) did not need much help, allowing just two hits - both from Freddie Patek (.225) - and throwing just 95 pitches in the victory.

Everything was just working right for us. We got the hits when we needed them, we got the home runs at just the right time, and we made the defensive plays when we had to make a stop - which wasn't often, because those boys couldn't hit off a tee." - Ne York second baseman Willie Randolph.

The win gives New York a two-game lead in the American League East over second place Baltimore, while the Royals are battling to stay out of the American League West cellar.

"It's not that they beat us, it's how they beat us.  I hate losing.  I really hate losing to the damn Yankees.  And the fact that my brother (New York starter Ken Brett) is pitching for them really pisses me off even more.  So now that you understand my state of mind, please go bug someone else." - Kansas City All-Star third baseman George Brett.

Flanagan and Orioles Hand Ryan Loss #5

Mike Flanagan
Baltimore snaps the five-game winning streak of the Angels as Mike Flanagan (1-0, 1.04 ERA) throws a three-hit shutout, striking out nine in the Orioles 4-0 victory.  Al Bumbry (.263, 5 RBI) has three hits and drives in one in a key three-run eighth inning off of California reliever John Verhoeven (7.11 ERA) that put the game out of reach.

"I will challenge that our starting rotation is not the best in either league. They are that good. Our offense is going to be fine. Sure, losing Reggie (Jackson) hurts, but we can make do. This team has a will to win." - Baltimore right fielder Ken Singleton.

Control problems continue to plague Angels starter Nolan Ryan (0-5, 5.23 ERA), as he walks seven in 6 1/3 innings, despite allowing just three hits and striking out four.   In his five straight losses, Ryan is averaging over 5 1/2 walks per game while allowing less than five hits per game.

"What can I say?  I'm not making the pitches I need to.  It's not a confidence issue - I know they can't hit me.  Maybe I should stop going for the corners and let it fly.  They might want to swing if they know the next pitch is a 99-mph fastball coming for their head." - California starter Nolan Ryan.

The main reason I listed them like that is I wanted them to be more than a name. It "forced" me to do some research on each of them, for which I am thankful.

Funny you should mention Pud, as he is known for being the "first baseball player to be known for using a performance enhancer", that being the Brown-Sequard elixir which contained monkey testosterone, distilled from - you guessed it - monkey testicles.

He did that for one game in 1889.

Apparently, he also had the habit of covering his entire body in a protective layer of zinc.

J.R. Shoots Down Phillies

J.R.Richard
The Astros send 11 batters to the plate and score eight runs in the ninth inning while J.R. Richard (3-3, 4.39 ERA) shuts down the Philadelphia offense, holding them to two hits and striking out six in a 9-0 shutout road victory.  Enos Cabell (.306, 9 RBI) hits a triple and a single for Houston while Greg Gross (.310, 9 RBI) and Bob Watson (.311, 18 RBI) each drive in two runs as they avoid a three-game sweep at Veterans Stadium.

"First off, I would like to thank to schedule jackass for making this ridiculous 13-game road trip for us.  It comes at a really bad time, when we were just starting to get it together.  Fortunately, we are getting some guys healthy and while it may seem like we are spinning our wheels we ain't out of this yet." - Houston manager Bill Virdon.

For eight innings, it is a 1-0 pitchers duel with Phillies strarter Ron Reed (3-3, 2.15 ERA) keeping the Astros off the base paths.  He is charged with one run on three hits through six innings and is only after Reed is replaced by Ron Schuler (2.16 ERA) and then Gene Garber (5.40 ERA) that the Houston bats come alive.

"You tell me how I should feel about our bullpen.  (Gene) Garber faces six batters - four of them get a hit, he allows five runs, all while recording one stinking out.  How do you think I feel?  Puppy dogs and butterflies? - Philadelphia manager Danny Ozark.

American League News
Kansas City Royals 1, New York Yankees 0
WP: Steve Busby (3-3, 4.18 ERA) / LP: Rudy May (3-2, 2.41 ERA)

Royals center fielder Amos Otis (.326, 4 HR, 15 RBI) hits a solo home run in the second inning and starter Steve Busby contains the Yankees to just two hits and three walks as Kansas City scores a 1-0 win.  During the three-game series with New York, the Royals have just 12 hits total, hitting .138 (12-for-87) during that span.  Yankees starter Rudy May was spectacular, allowing just three hits and the Otis home run in the complete game loss.

Detroit Tigers 0, Chicago White Sox 4
WP: Francisco Barrios (4-0, 2.49 ERA) / LP: Ray Bare (1-3, 7.43 ERA)

Francisco Barrios gets his fourth complete game and third shutout in six starts, as he permits just five hits while striking out four in a 4-0 victory over the Tigers.  Despite the limited offensive output, Ron LeFlore (.340) still singles for Detroit, extending his consecutive game hit streak to 20 games - the longest in the majors this year.

Boston Red Sox 3, Texas Rangers 2
WP: Fergie Jenkins (3-0, 3.34 ERA) / LP: Gaylord Perry (3-3, 3.97 ERA) / S: Bill Lee (5, 4.38 ERA)

Boston starter Fergie Jenkins throws a three-hitter through eight innings, but must sweat through a precarious ninth from the showers as the Rangers score twice before falling, 3-2.  Jim Rice (.357, 5 HR, 13 RBI) hits a solo home run and Cecil Cooper (.283, 22 RBI) has three hits with a double as the Red Sox get the seventh straight victory.  Texas starter Gaylord Perry gives up three runs on eight hits in 8 2/3 innings in defeat, but does strikeout six batters to move him past Tim Keefe into ninth place all-time.

California Angels 0, Baltimore Orioles 2
WP: Mike Cuellar (3-2, 3.50 ERA) / LP: Frank Tanana (3-2, 1.95 ERA)

Baltimore gets two runs in the eight inning off of Frank Tanana to get past the Angels, 2-0.  Orioles starter Mike Cuellar allows six hits in getting his second shutout of the season as Baltimore takes two games of the three game series.  Tanana would go the distance in the loss, giving up both runs on six hits of his own.

Oakland Athletics 5, Cleveland Indians 3
WP: Mike Torrez (5-1, 2.90 ERA) / LP: Dennis Eckersley (1-4, 3.76 ERA) / S: Rollie Fingers (8, 0.00 ERA)

Rollie Fingers extends his scoreless inning streak to 13 1/3 relief innings, notching his eighth save in Oakland's 5-3 win over the Tribe and gaining sole possession of 12th place on the saves career list from Jack Aker with 124.  Boog Powell (.214, 6 RBI) hits a pair of doubles and drives in two in the loss.  Oakland designated hitter Billy Williams (.265, 6 RBI) has two hits, moving him past the great Ted Williams into 39th on the all-time hits leaderboard.

Minnesota Twins 6, Milwaukee Brewers 2
WP: Joe Decker (4-1, 3.02 ERA) / LP: Pete Broberg (0-4, 6.33 ERA)

National League News
Atlanta Braves 9, Pittsburgh Pirates 10
WP: Dave Giusti (1-0, 0.00 ERA) / LP: Max Beard (0-2, 1 BS, 2.16 ERA) / S: Kent Tekulve (4, 5.40 ERA)

Down 9-5 going into the home half of the seventh inning, the Pirates come from behind to score five runs in the seventh and eighth innings to gain a 10-9 victory over Atlanta.  Manny Sanguillen (.316) has three hits, Tommy Helms (.310, 7 RBI) has three hits and drives in two, and Richie Zisk (.319, 5 HR, 18 RBI) hits a two-run home run as Pittsburgh overcomes five errors to win.  For the Braves, Marty Perez (.412, 7 RBI) goes 4-for-4,  Jerry Royster (.286, 12 RBI) has three hits and two runs batted in, Rowland Office (.320, 11 RBI) breaks a 2-for-21 slump with three hits, and Earl Williams (.255, 2 HR, 12 RBI) hits a two-run home run in defeat.

Los Angeles Dodgers 4, St. Louis Cardinals 5
WP: Al Hrabosky (1-2, 2 BS, 4.70 ERA) / LP: Al Downing (1-1, 4.50 ERA)

One half inning after Davey Lopes (.284, 9 RBI) ties the game at four with a run scoring single, Ken Rudolph (.286, 1 RBI) of the Cardinals hits a walk-off run scoring single of his own, scoring Bake McBride from second and giving St. Louis a 5-4 victory.  Keith Hernandez (.275, 10 RBI) has a three hit day with a run scored and a run batted in as St. Louis takes 2-of-3 from the Dodgers.  Steve Garvey (.324, 3 HR, 12 RBI) hits a two-run home run in the loss, his second in consecutive games.

INJURY UPDATE:
St. Louis SP Pete Falcone has been diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral ligament and will miss 11-12 months.
He has been placed on the 60-day disabled list, retroactive to April 30.
Recalled MR Mike Proly (0-3, 6 SV, 12.38 ERA, 8.0 IP - AAA) from Triple A Tulsa.
Tough break for the Cardinals as Falcone was their only consistant pitcher early on.  Roric Harrison will join the rotation while Proly looks to settle in at middle relief.  How much playing time?  Proly not a lot.  Ha!

Cincinnati Reds 4, New York Mets 2
WP: Gary Nolan (4-1, 2.30 ERA) / LP: Tom Seaver (2-2, 2.22 ERA)

New York starter Tom Seaver strikes out eight, walks three and allows three hits through eight innings, but a fifth inning grand slam home run from Doug Flynn (.250, 1 HR, 5 RBI) proves to be his undoing as Cincinnati beats the Mets, 4-2.  Reds starter Gary Nolan gets the complete game victory, giving up two runs on eight hits while fanning four to avoid a three game sweep.  Dave Kingman (.309, 11 HR, 24 RBI) hits a two-run home run for New York, giving him six home runs in his last five games.

Philadelphia Phillies

TRANSACTION:
Philadelphia purchases contract of C Johnny Oates (.129, 0 HR, 4 RBI, 70 AB - AAA) from Triple A Oklahoma City.

The Phillies have decided to go back to Tim McCarver as their starter behind the plate, but the move to swap Oates for Boone is leaving everyone confused.

TRANSACTION:
Houston activates LF Jose Cruz (.396, 0 HR, 5 RBI, 48 AB) from the disabled list.
Options LF Rich Chiles (Did Not Play) to Double A Columbus.

Downing's Five Hits Corrals Rangers

Player of the Day
Brian Downing
Chicago White Sox 9, Texas Rangers 2
WP: Steve Busby (3-3, 4.18 ERA) / LP: Steve Hargan (2-2, 7.57 ERA)

White Sox catcher Brian Downing (.291, 2 HR, 14 RBI) goes 5-for-5, scoring twice and driving in five more runs as Chicago delivers 18 hits as a team in defeating the Rangers 9-2 at Arlington Stadium.  Downing caps off a four-run first inning for the Sox with a three-run blast to left off of Texas starter Steve Hargan, then follows it up with four consecutive singles to help send the Rangers to their fourth straight loss.  Jack Brohamer (.253, 6 RBI) delivers a run scoring double and Pat Kelly (.256, 4 HR, 8 RBI) tacks on a solo home run in the second inning, his team-leading fourth of the season.

"Five hits is pretty cool, but getting the five ribbies along with it makes it kinda special.  It actually surprised me - they kept throwing these perfect pitches to hit and I kept hitting them.  I expected a walk someone in there to break things up." - Chicago catcher Brian Downing.

Hargan lasts only 4 2/3 innings, allowing seven runs on 10 hits for Texas.  It is the second time in four starts that he has allowed seven or more runs in a game and third where he has failed to complete six innings.  First baseman Mike Hargrove (.333) has three hits with a double and Len Randle (.274) its a singles and double for the Rangers in the loss.

"We have scored two or fewer runs in these last four games - all losses.  I think that right there speaks for itself.  What we need to figure out is why.  Did we use different pine tar?  Was there too much starch in the laundry?  Did catering change out the cube steak and pickle sandwiches before the games?` - Texas manager Frank Lucchesi.

For those that read my "dynasty", two things:

1) First off, THANK YOU!

2) I am considering changing the format a little. Not much will change, aside from the game reports. I am thinking of changing from a small paragraph review (option A below), to more of a box score look (option B) with a smidge more information.

Either way is fine, however Option A may get a little repetitive and takes a little longer to put out each day, while Option B takes a smidge more room to do, but I can churn them out quicker.

These are the only changes I am considering and I am wanting to see how those that read feel about it. These examples are from the games played on Tuesday, May 11.

OPTION A:

New York Yankees 7, Detroit Tigers 2
WP: Catfish Hunter (6-0, 2.51 ERA) / LP: Vern Ruhle (0-6, 6.00 ERA)

Yankees starter Catfish Hunter maintains his undefeated record as he is charged with two runs on seven hits in a complete game 7-2 victory over Detroit.  Mickey Rivers (.325, 15 RBI) and Roy White (.311) each have three hits as New York collects 16 hits as a team.  Depite the loss, Ron LeFlore (.333) extends his hitting streak to 21 games with a single in the seventh inning and Ben Oglivie (.318, 7 HR, 20 RBI) hits a solo home run in the sixth.

Or option B:

New York Yankees 7, Detroit Tigers 2
WP: Catfish Hunter (6-0, 2.51 ERA) / LP: Vern Ruhle (0-6, 6.00 ERA)

Depite the loss, Ron LeFlore extends his hitting streak to 21 games with a single in the seventh inning.

WP: Dan Larson (2-1, 2.23 ERA) / LP: Woodie Fryman (1-2, 3.67 ERA) / S: Bo McLaughlin (5, 1.35 ERA)

In front of a crowd of 20,906 at Jarry Park, Montreal's Woodie Fryman and Dan Larson of the Astros put on outstanding pitching performances.  While Fryman strikes out 12 batters and allows just two runs on six hits in 7 2/3 innings, he throws a wild pitch with Cesar Cedeno at third in the top of the eighth inning which proves to be the winning run in a 2-1 loss to the Astros.  Larson does him better, giving up one run on just five hits in eight innings to get the victory.  Leon Roberts (.167, 2 HR, 10 RBI) hits a solo home run for Houston's only other run.

Or option B:

Houston Astros 2, Montreal Expos 1
WP: Dan Larson (2-1, 2.23 ERA) / LP: Woodie Fryman (1-2, 3.67 ERA) / S: Bo McLaughlin (5, 1.35 ERA)

While option A is more immersive for the reader I think, I can certainly understand how that would get repetitive fast.

For a creation of this magnitude I think it's more important that things run smoothly for you. Therefore, I'd say go with 'B'.

I did have a question: Is there any particular reason you've decided to ignore expansion?

Thanks for responding.

I guess I was just trying to get a feel for what is easier for the reader. I do not want things to get cluttered (sometimes I keep adding stuff to where everything gets lost in a mass of words) and I didn't know if people preferred the AP recap type reports to the "just the facts" box scores.

Either option is not much trouble. I enjoy writing and this is a nice getaway. I see other dynasties that I really enjoy that are weekly or monthly recaps and I often say "I should just do that". But, I started it one way and would hate that drastic a change.

Maybe I 'll do that with a 1983 Indians thread later on...

As far as why I didn't want to expand...first off I wanted to do something a little different with a "what if" scenario. I did not want to dilute the league or give the American League two extra teams. I'm not saying that the league will not EVER expand (well maybe), just not in 1977. I started in 1976 because of Reggie Jackson playing in Baltimore for that one year and I wanted to save Thurman Munson's life by not having him practice landings a mere 10 minutes from my home.

Thanks again for responding. I am working on the next day and we'll see if anyone else answers.

Part of the reason I started reading this dynasty is for the "option a" recaps. It is so in depth that I actually feel like I'm following along with a legit season.

Side note: I've spent a bunch of time on the interweb reading about the actual 1976 season just to see how closely your story is following reality.

Sorry if that makes it a more difficult choice for you. I'll follow along either way!

Thanks for the input. I think I will continue on the way I am going, as once I can get in a flow - I can put them out pretty often. I just needed some reassurance that people liked the way it was presented.

If you are following the actual 1976 season, then I am in trouble. Unbeknownst to me when I started, the schedule that I started using did not match up with the actual schedule. This bothered me so much that I actually thought about scrapping things and starting over, however original file I was using started things at Opening Day - too late to make schedule changes. Nevertheless, there was a side story about Bowie Kuhn changing every schedule in order to end the lockout during spring training. You will see some of the more notable events of year happening, just not on the actual day it did in real life.

Ok, I am blabbering again. I do truly appreciate you reading. It makes things 100x more fun to know someone is following along.

Washington Leads Oakland To Destruction Of Twins

Player of the Day
Claudell Washington
Oakland Athletics 14, Minnesota 1
WP: Stan Bahnsen (3-1, 3.26 ERA) / LP: Dave Goltz (1-5, 5.64 ERA)

Claudell Washington (.290, 3 HR, 20 RBI) leads an offensive explosion against the Minnesota Twins, driving in five runs and scoring twice while getting four hits, including a solo home run and a two-run double, in a 14-1 mauling.  Oakland sends 14 men to the plate in scoring nine runs in the second inning as they win their fifth straight.  Don Baylor (.250, 14 RBI) has four hits and Bill North (.294, 10 RBI, 12 SB) scores three runs and steals two bases.  Perhaps lost in the offensive outburst was the pitching of Stan Bahnsen, who allows just five hits and one run through eight innings, his best performance of the season.

"You look up and down this lineup and I don't see any cracks.  There are no chinks in this armor.  We stand up there and let the other team take their best shot and we just shrug it off.  This team has more lethal weapons than all of the armed forces combined." - Oakland left fielder Claudell Washington.

With a single in the sixth inning, Minnesota's Rod Carew (.350) hits the 1,500 hit mark in his 1,199th game for the only highlight in an otherwise miserable game for the Twins.

"1,500 is nice, but it is just a number.  I don't get any money for it.  No fancy cars.  No free meals.  Do I feel good about it?  No way.  When you get beat by 13 runs, I could get 3,000 and it wouldn't feel good.  " - Minnesota first baseman Rod Carew.

Minnesota also sent out a press release saying that long time Twin Tony Oliva is on the market if anyone is interested in a trade.  The 37-year-old has yet to play this season.

WP: Pete Vukovich (1-1, 2.38 ERA) / LP: Doug Bird (0-3, 2 BS, 5.92 ERA)

Cleveland left fielder Rico Carty leaves the game in the third inning on a diving grab of a Robin Yount fly ball.  No prognosis was given from team doctors after the game.

Baltimore Orioles 3, Boston Red Sox 4
WP: Bill Lee (1-2, 3 BS, 4.73 ERA) / LP: Jim Palmer (3-2, 3.07 ERA)

Pinch hitter Brooks Robinson (.286, 2 RBI) singles home Doug DeCinces in the top of the ninth inning to tie the game, but it goes for not as Jim Palmer walks Rick Burleson with the bases loaded in the bottom of the frame to give the Red Sox a 4-3 victory over Baltimore.  Dwight Evans (.340) hits a pair of doubles and Jim Rice (.363, 16 RBI) hits a solo home run to support Rick Wise (7.64 ERA), who goes eight innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on five hits while striking out six.  Baltimore's other scores come from a two-run home run from Elrod Hendricks (.250, 3 HR, 10 RBI).

New York Yankees 6, Detroit Tigers 3
WP: Ken Brett (5-1, 2.59 ERA) / LP: Dave Lemanczyk (2-3, 4.86 ERA)

National League News
Atlanta Braves 12, Chicago Cubs 13
WP: Steve Stone (1-4, 6.91 ERA) / LP: Andy Messersmith (2-4, 5.56 ERA) / S: Mike Garman (1, 19.80 ERA)

Lee Lacy (.297, 9 RBI) leads the Braves comeback with a three-run double, Ken Henderson (.333) scores three runs, and Earl Williams (.265, 3 HR, 15 RBI) delivers a two-run home run before the rally falls short.

San Diego Padres 5, New York Mets 0
WP: Randy Jones (4-3, 1.95 ERA) / LP: Jerry Koosman (2-1, 3.70 ERA)

In the third game of a battle of division leaders, Padres starter  Randy Jones throws a six-hit shutout without giving up a walk or striking out a batter in a 5-0 San Diego victory over the Mets.  Dave Winfield (.333, 4 HR, 24 RBI) hits a solo home run and Fred Kendall (.321, 15 RBI) has a three-hit day as the Padres avoid a three-game sweep.  Jerry Koosman strikes out eight in his first game from the disabled list, but allows all five runs (four earned) on 11 hits in 7 2/3 innings to take the loss.

Houston Astros 4, Montreal Expos 10
WP: Steve Renko (4-1, 2.82 ERA) / LP: Larry Dierker (1-5, 2.90 ERA)

Montreal second baseman Pete Mackanin (.256, 3 HR, 17 RBI) hits a grand slam and Bombo Rivera (.306, 4 RBI) goes 4-for-5 with a three-run triple as the Expos pound Houston, 10-4.  Steve Renko gets his first complete game of the season, striking out eight while giving up four runs on nine hits, three of those hits coming from Jose Cruz (.387, 4 SB) with Bob Watson (.310, 5 HR, 20 RBI) adding a two run home run for Houston.

WP: Eric Rasmussen (3-2, 2.68 ERA) / LP: John D'Acquisto (0-3, 6.47 ERA)

Not only does St. Louis starter Eric Rasmussen hold the Giants offense to just five hits and one run in a complete game 12-1 win, he also collects three hits, drives in two, and scores one himself as the Cardinals completely dominates San Francisco.  Bake McBride (.297) has four hits, Willie Crawford (.362, 11 RBI) hits a three-run double, and Mike Tyson (.275, 9 RBI) delivers a three-run triple to give St. Louis their third straight win and sixth in their last seven.  Gary Thomasson (.315, 4 HR, 15 RBI) scores the only Giants run with a solo home run in the fourth inning,

Pittsburgh Pirates 6, Cincinnati Reds 1
WP: Jerry Reuss (4-0, 2.15 ERA) / LP: Pat Zachry (4-2, 3.88 ERA)

Al Oliver (.325) delivers four hits and Jerry Reuss permits one run on six hits through eight innings to lead Pittsburgh to a 6-1 win over the Reds.  Willie Stargell (.289, 4 HR, 21 RBI) crushes a grand slam and Tommy Helms (.320, 2 HR, 8 RBI) adds a solo shot as the Pirates win their sixth straight game.  A solo home run by Johnny Bench (.194, 5 HR, 16 RBI) is the lone Cincinnati score.

Philadelphia Phillies 3, Los Angeles Dodgers 7
WP: Don Sutton (4-3, 3.00 ERA) / LP: Jim Kaat (5-1, 2.00 ERA)

Los Angeles scores six runs in the first inning en route to a 7-3 victory and hands Philadelphia starter Jim Kaat his first loss of the season.  Steve Garvey (.345) has three hits with a double, Steve Yeager (.227, 3 HR, 8 RBI) drills a three-run home run and Bill Russell (.308, 1 HR, 18 RBI) adds a solo shot to win the two-game series with the Phillies.  Mike Schmidt (.288, 7 HR, 18 RBI) hits a solo home run in the eighth inning, the 100th home run of his career.  With his only strikeout of the game, Kaat passes Camilo Pascual for 21st place on the all-time strikeout list.

Don't worry, I'm not checking it that closely It was more just reading up on the players, checking final standings, overall stats, and other little things that piqued my curiosity. e.g., I had no idea Reggie Jackson ever played for the Orioles, or that Willie Mays was the Mets' hitting coach.

It's a great story, keep it up!

Kusick Gets Twins Back In Win Column

Player of the Day
Craig Kusick

California Angels 7, Minnesota Twins 9
WP: Tom Johnson (1-1, 3 BS, 2.08 ERA) / LP: Don Kirkwood (1-1, 4.32 ERA)

In a game full of twists, turns and lead changes, the Minnesota Twins gets the final say as Craig Kusick (.231, 5 HR, 22 RBI) hits a walk-off, two-run home run off of Angels reliever Don Kirkwood in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Twins a 9-7 victory over California.  The hit was the fourth of the day for Kusick, who scores two runs and drive in five while Rod Carew (.363) scores twice and collects three hits of his own as Minnesota breaks a three game losing streak.

"With Larry (Hisle) hurt, we knew all of us had to pick up the slack.  Coming up in the the ninth inning, I was just hoping for a chance.  The way I was feeling - the way I was hitting, I knew I could win this game.  It just that Kirkwood threw a meatball on the first pitch, my granny could have hit that one out and she's been dead for six years." - Minnesota designated hitter Craig Kusick.

California takes the early advantage thanks to a grand slam by Dave Collins (.395, 2 HR, 14 RBI), who has three hits on the day, scoring twice with the four runs batted in.  Kirkwood replaces starter Paul Hartzell in the fifth inning after Hartzell (3.32 ERA) allows seven runs on eight hits and three walks in just four innings.

"Sure I could have pulled Don (Kirkwood) for the ninth, but he was lights out until then and still looked fresh.  Besides when I consulted my magic 8-ball if I should keep him in the game, it said "signs point to yes".  What more advice do you need?" - California manager Dick Williams.

Minnesota right fielder Dan Ford (.241, 4 HR, 23 RBI) left the game in the fourth inning after being hit by pitch.  Team trainers state that it is nothing more than a bruised thigh and that he should be back in action in about a week.

American League News
Milwaukee Brewers 0, Cleveland Indians 4
WP: Pat Dobson (4-2, 2.44 ERA) / LP: Jerry Augustine (1-3, 4.68 ERA)

Indians starter Pat Dobson strikes out seven in throwing a five-hit shutout as the Tribe sends Milwaukee to their fourth straight defeat, 4-0.  The loss marks the 10th loss in 11 games in the month of May for Milwaukee.

New York Yankees 10, Detroit Tigers 5
WP: Ed Figueroa (3-1, 4.02 ERA) / LP: Mark Fidrych (2-5, 6.50 ERA)

Led by Willie Randolph (.285, 1 HR, 14 RBI), who hits a two-run home run and drives in five runs on the day, New York doubles up the Tigers 10-5 at Tiger Stadium.  Chris Chambliss (.284, 16 RBI) has four hits and scores twice while Thurman Munson (.378) and Graig Nettles (.279, 17 RBI) each deliver three hits as the Yankees have 18 hits as a team.  Rusty Staub (.240, 1 HR, 6 RBI) hits a two-run home run for the Tigers while starter Mark Fidrych gives up seven runs on 15 hits through six innings - his third start of allowing seven or more runs since April 28,

Kansas City Royals 5, Chicago White Sox 6
WP: Jesse Jefferson (1-3, 3.74 ERA) / LP: Marty Pattin (0-3, 3.48 ERA) / S: Terry Forster (3, 3.65 ERA)

Carlos May (.433) has four hits and Brian Downing (.310, 17 RBI) adds three more for Chicago as the White Sox hold off a late comeback from Kansas City and win, 6-5.  In his last four games, Downing is hitting .611 (11-for-18), while Jorge Orta is hitting .424 (14-for-33) in his last eight games.  Tony Solaita (.280, 6 HR, 20 RBI) hits a two-run home run for the Royals and drives in three of Kansas City's five runs.

Sources close to the team state that they are currently shopping 37-year-old second baseman Cookie Rojas (.500, 0 HR, 0 RBI, 2 AB).

Baltimore Orioles 5, Boston Red Sox 3
WP: Doyle Alexander (4-1, 2.23 ERA) / LP: Reggie Cleveland (3-2, 5.32 ERA) / S: Dennis Martinez (4, 2.61 ERA)

Baltimore right fielder Ken Singleton (.274) has three hits with a pair of doubles to suuport another strong showing from starter Doyle Alexander as the Orioles defeat Boston, 5-3.  Alexander goes 8 1/3 innings and is charged with three runs on nine hits as he wins his fourth game in five starts.

National League News
Atlanta Braves 9, Chicago Cubs 7
WP: Roger Moret (2-3, 4.31 ERA) / LP: Ray Burris (5-2, 3.49 ERA)

Darrell Evans (.221, 5 HR, 13 RBI, 2 SB) hits a solo home run, driving in two runs and scoring three as the Braves hold off a six-run ninth inning Chicago rally to win 9-7.  Bill Madlock (.454, 31 RBI) has three hits, including a run-scoring double in the key ninth inning, but the Cubs cannot overcome early errors by Jose Cardenal (his 1st), Andre Thornton (1st) and Madlock (7th).

Tanana Silences Twins

Player of the Day
Frank Tanana

California Angels 6, Minnesota Twins 0
WP: Frank Tanana (4-2, 1.68 ERA) / LP: Joe Decker (4-2, 3.28 ERA)

Having lost to the Twins just one day prior, the California Angels seems to have something to prove as pitcher Frank Tanana faces just 31 hitters en route to a complete game, two-hit, 6-0 shutout of the Minnesota.  Bobby Bonds (.239, 16 RBI) has three hits while driving in a run and Bruce Bochte (.277) crosses the plate three times while collecting a pair of hits.

"The loss yesterday woke us up a little, especially to a team like the Twins.  It's not a knock on them or anything, but they are struggling with injuries right now and you have to beat a team during those times.  Come September, the roles might be reversed and I know they won't be afraid to step on our necks." - California designated hitter Mike Easler.

Twins starter Joe Decker only makes it five innings and is charged with four runs (three earned) on eight hits while striking out four and walking three.  The team struggles on defense as well as Mike Poepping commits two errors in right field as a replacement for the injured Dan Ford and as a team commit more errors than they get in hits.

"We just could not get anything going today.  We couldn't hit, we couldn't pitch, we couldn't field - hell it's a wonder we could find our way to the field.  You can't go out there and go through the motions and expect to win.  Champions don't play that way and if we want to reach that level, we cannot play that way." - Minnesota third baseman Steve Braun.

American League News
Detroit Tigers 0, Baltimore Orioles 1
WP: Grant Jackson (4-2, 2.44 ERA) / LP: Ray Bare (1-4, 5.97 ERA) / S: Dennis Martinez (5, 2.38 ERA)

Detroit starter Ray Bare throws a complete game four-hitter, but loses the game 1-0 to the Orioles when Ken Singleton (.284) hits the first of two doubles in the second inning and is driven home by a Doug DeCinces (.182, 11 RBI) single one batter later.  Baltimore relievers Grant Jackson, Fred Holdsworth (1.86 ERA) and Dennis Martinez give up just one hit in 4 2/3 innings after starter Mike Cuellar (3.19 ERA) leaves the game in the fifth inning with an undisclosed injury, having given up one hit of his own.

Kansas City Royals 2, Texas Rangers 1
WP: Steve Busby (4-3, 3.77 ERA) / LP: Gaylord Perry (3-4, 3.71 ERA) / S: Doug Bird (4, 16.20 ERA)

Texas starter Gaylord Perry throws his third complete game of the season, striking out seven while allowing two runs on seven hits, but the Rangers lose 2-1 to Steve Busby and the Royals.  Busby permits one run on eight hits while striking out seven in eight innings.  Toby Harrah (.316) has three hits for Texas in the loss.

Cleveland Indians 1, New York Yankees 0
WP: Fritz Peterson (1-1, 2.45 ERA) / LP: Rudy May (3-3, 2.20 ERA) / S: Stan Thomas (2, 2.25 ERA)

The Cleveland Indians hold the Yankees to three hits - two by Thurman Munson (.383) - and score their only run on a Duane Kuiper ground out as the Tribe skates by with a 1-0 triumph.  Fritz Peterson and Stan Thomas combine to pitch five scoreless innings in relief of starter Dennis Eckersley, giving up just two hits and striking out three.  New York starter Rudy May goes the distance in the loss, being charged with one run on seven hits in losing his third consecutive start.

Indians starter Dennis Eckersley (1-4, 3.51 ERA) strikes out four in four innings, but fails to return for the fifth to what team trainers are calling a strained back.
Team officials decided to place Eckersley on the 15-day disabled list and recalled reliever Tom Buskey (DNP in AAA) from Triple A Toledo.
Sources state that Buskey will join the bullpen and that Fritz Peterson will join the rotation to replace Eckersley.

The Tribe also receives news on left fielder Rico Carty (.261, 2 HR, 10 RBI), who has been sidelined since May 12.  Trainers state that Carty is suffering from a strained knee and will be out of action for about four weeks.
Carty was also placed on the 15-day disabled list and will be replaced by left fielder Tommy Smith (.097, 0 HR, 0 RBI, 31 AB - AAA), who was recalled from Triple A Toledo.
Smith will not start, but may give the outfielders a breather and a primary pinch runner.

Before the game, Yankees officials state the reliever Dock Ellis is receiving treatment for the flu and will be unavailable for the next 4 days.

Los Angeles first baseman Steve Garvey (.357, 5 HR, 14 RBI) hits two solo home runs against Pirates starter John Candelaria (3.50 ERA), but it takes two runs in the ninth inning, capped by a bases loaded, two-out, walk-off single from Joe Ferguson (.207, 6 RBI) off of Kent Tekulve to give the Dodgers a 6-5 comeback win.  Candelaria pitches well, allowing five hits and four runs, with only two being earned thanks to the 16th error at shirt for Frank Taveras.  Richie Zisk (.331, 7 HR, 22 RBI) hits a solo home run and Manny Sanguillen (.333, 11 RBI) goes 3-for-3 with two runs batted in for Pittsburgh in defeat.

The Dodgers announced before the game than shortstop Bill Russell (.303, 1 HR, 19 RBI) has been signed to a 1-year contract extension worth a total of $85,000.

Atlanta Braves 5, New York Mets 7

John Milner (.330, 13 RBI) of the Mets hits four singles, drives in three runs, and scores twice as New York continues the Braves woes with a 7-5 victory over Atlanta.  Tom Seaver goes 7 1/3 innings, giving up five runs (two earned, thanks to three errors) on five hits while striking out seven.

Montreal Expos 3, Cincinnati Reds 2
WP: Steve Rogers (4-3, 2.26 ERA) / LP: Gary Nolan (4-2, 2.41 ERA) / S: Dale Murray (7, 0.64 ERA)

Despite making three errors as a team, Montreal starter Steve Rogers permits just four hits to the Reds, giving up two unearned runs while striking out five as the Expos defeat Cincinnati, 3-2.  Tim Foli (.419, 2 HR, 13 RBI) delivers a solo home run and Ellis Valentine (.272) has three singles to help send the Reds to their third straight defeat.  Gary Nolan impresses in defeat, allowing three runs on eight hits in going the distance for his fifth complete game in seven starts.  Pete Rose collects two hits, moving him into sole possession of 46th place on the all-time hit list.

San Diego Padres 5, St. Louis Cardinals 6
WP: John Denny (2-3, 6.06 ERA) / LP: Dave Freisleben (4-2, 3.99 ERA) / S: Al Hrabosky (7, 3.38 ERA)

Willie Crawford (.371, 2 HR, 14 RBI) hits a pinch-hit, three-run home run off of Dave Freisleben to cap off a four-run inning to give the St. Louis the lead and the 6-5 win over the Padres.  Doug Rader (.368) has four hits with a pair of doubles and Freisleben goes 2-for-3 with a triple while driving in a run in the loss.

St. Louis left fielder Lou Brock (.258) leaves the game in the fifth inning running down a fly ball by Willie McCovey.  Team trainers have not given any status on his injury.

San Diego first baseman Mike Ivie (.378, 2 HR, 24 RBI) leaves the game in the third inning while legging out a double.  Team doctors later diagnosed the injury as a quadriceps strain and he will be out about six days.  Sources are saying the Padres will not put Ivie on the disabled list and that fan-favorite Willie McCovey will take over at first base for Ivie.

The Padres also received disheartening news about starting pitcher Brent Strom.  Strom (0-1, 4.50 ERA) was due to return in about two weeks, but trainers have pushed that return back yet another two weeks due to a setback in his recovery.
